Address dental discomfort sooner, rather than later There’s a good reason insurance companies pay for preventative dental care and an even better reason patients would be wise to take advantage of it.

Many times, small things that show up at routine exams can be nipped in the bud before they end up wreaking havoc.

A good rule of thumb to follow when dental discomfort makes its way into your mouth?

Be dialing up the dentist as soon as possible.

Dr. Reid Stone of Northern Hills Dental says the problem with waiting to go to the dentist until something hurts contributes negatively, not only to a patient’s suffering, but their pocketbook, as well.

“Waiting to go to the dentist ends up causing more pain and frustration for both the patient and the dentist,” Stone said. “Waiting also ends up costing significantly more money to the patient.”

Common dental issues that arise with pain as the precursor to treatment are periodontal (gum) disease and dental abscesses that result in swelling of the face and have constant pain.

He shared an example of how ignoring discomfort or dental issues when they are manageable can eventually escalate into a much bigger, more expensive problem.

“Take, for example, a dental abscess that results in a person needing either a root canal or an extraction and a dental implant,” Stone said.

“It starts as a small cavity that could have been picked up in a routine cleaning and could have been fixed for less than $200 can easily turn into a condition causing pain and needing to be taken care of immediately and costing in excess of $4,000.”

“Just last week there was a patient that owns his own business and is very busy but delayed getting a filling that was proposed four years ago,” Stone explained. “It resulted in him needing to be seen first thing Monday morning and having a root canal and crown performed. The cost this added by waiting was not only pain and missing work, but was also over 10 times the cost if he would have just had the filling completed.”

When patients visit the dentist regularly, they check for early signs of infection in the gums and dental caries (cavities) to prevent issues like periodontal (gum) disease, dental abscesses and pain/infection.

“People usually put off going to the dentist because of fear, money and time,” Stone said. “All of these are much worse if a person delays going to the dentist. It is in a person’s best interest to go to the dentist regularly and take care of early issues as it will result in costing less money and less pain. This is why dental insurance pays for preventative care such as cleanings/exams. They do it, not because they are nice, but because they know in the long-run it will cost less money. Do yourself a favor and schedule an appointment with your dentist. If you’ve been waiting, there is no better time to go than right now. It’s probably not as bad as you think it is and definitely not the worst we have seen!”
