Transmissions rarely receive the maintenance and attention they deserve. Since it’s under the vehicle and out of sight, out of mind, many forget about their importance until a problem arrives. While they don’t require as much attention as your engine, the automatic transmission’s role is imperative. While a motor gets most of the praise for providing the energy to propel a car, the transmission acts as a distributor to send the right amount of power to the wheels. Without it, our vehicles would have no way to determine if we’re driving up or downhill or need extra power when towing. Make sure this incredible machine operates efficiently by completing service based on the manufacturer’s recommendations.

There is not a one-size-fits-all service interval for the numerous automatic transmissions offered by vehicle makers. It’s important to refer to your service manual to figure out exactly what the manufacturer recommends. If you purchase a used car or truck with high miles and are unsure of how it was maintained, you should have the fluid and performance tested at your local auto repair shop. Here are some of the vast service interval differences you can expect, as reported by Consumer Reports.
Many new vehicles can operate up to 100,000 miles without maintenance. Some vehicle makers suggest service after only 30,000 miles. A few manufacturers use a sealed transmission which requires zero maintenance as the fluid is meant to last for the vehicle’s lifetime. Since there are so many variables to understand the maintenance of your transmission, it’s crucial to stick to a strict maintenance routine as set by the manufacturer.
Types of maintenance In most cases, general maintenance to an automatic transmission requires replacing a portion of the unit’s fluid and applying a new filter and gasket in the pan. In more extreme situations, a service writer may recommend a complete flush of the system. This task requires that all fluid is eradicated and replaced and will sometimes use specially formed cleaning solutions to wash out grime and sludge. Since transmission fluid doesn’t burn like engine oil, if you find yourself low, it’s likely you have a leak. A good indicator is finding drops or puddles of red fluids under your vehicle. If this is detected, be sure to check your capacity with the dipstick and refill with the correct fluid recommended by the vehicle maker.

Strut your stuff A major component of your vehicle’s suspension system are struts. While people often confuse them with shock absorbers, they are wildly different. A shock absorber’s primary purpose is to control spring and tension movement, not support a vehicle’s weight. Shock absorbers are comfort companions who adjust to roadways and provide us with a more comfortable ride. A strut, on the other hand, is an integral part of a vehicle’s structural support system. They take the place of a traditional upper control arm found on cars and trucks with shock absorbers. While their operations may be similar, the main differences with strut assemblies are their responsibility to maintain control, steering, create effective braking and even wheel alignment.
Replacement intervals Struts are a reliable part of a vehicle but do eventually experience problems after constant abuse on uneven roads. While they aren’t traditionally a part of routine maintenance, most automakers recommend replacements around the 50,000-mile mark. Since driving habits and road conditions can vary vastly by location, follow your service professional’s advice about when to replace your struts. They know the signs of a failing unit and can give you an idea of how much life is left.
Signs for replacement Failing strut assemblies often show signs of wear that people can notice while driving. Here are some good ways to test the condition of the important stabilizers from the National Auto Parts Association. Driving over potholes or speed bumps causes the vehicle to make noise or is difficult to handle. The front end nosedives when brakes are applied. There is noticeable leaking near the strut and its housing. It’s important not to delay a replacement or an expert’s recommendation when the struts begin failing.
DIY or professional? Changing struts can be difficult for an amateur DIYer, and more importantly, incredibly dangerous. Specialized tools are required to remove a strut from its coil spring. Many strut manufacturers produce quick strut assemblies, which come as a complete unit, so a replacement can simply be bolted up to its predecessor’s footprint. However, since it’s such a crucial part of the vehicle’s support system, unless you’re familiar with alignments and toe adjustments, a professional replacement is highly recommended.

The outbreak of COVID-19 may be stressful for people and communities to handle, especially as new information continues to be released at seemingly breakneck speeds. This stress can be difficult for people to handle. Maybe you have an older adult in your life with pre-existing medical conditions that could make them more at risk to catch coronavirus. Maybe your workplace recently shut down due to bans on public crowds and you’re worried about where your next paycheck is coming from. We all handle stress differently, and there is not a one-size-fits-all solution to overcoming these emotionally challenging times. Fortunately, there are plenty of beset practices you can follow to make illness-induced stress easier to manage.
WHO IS STRESSED? There are certain segments of the population who may be more susceptible to stress than others. According to the Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Services Administration, here are some examples of our country’s most vulnerable populations: • People who have preexisting mental health conditions including problems with substance use. • Children. • People who are helping with the response to COVID-19, like doctors and other health care providers, or first responders.
WHAT REACTION MIGHT THEY HAVE? According to SAMHSA, there are a wide range of emotions that come with dealing with stress. They include: • Fear and worry about your own health status and that of your loved ones who may have been exposed to COVID-19. • Changes in sleep or eating patterns. • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating. • Worsening of chronic health problems.
• Increased use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.
HOW TO HANDLE STRESS People with preexisting mental health conditions should continue with their treatment plans during an emergency and monitor for any new symptoms. SAMHSA recommends connecting with family, friends and others in your community to overcome stress. Other actions to take include avoiding excessive exposure to media coverage of COVID-19 and taking good care of both your body and mind. This can include regular exercise and meditation, as well as eating healthy, getting plenty of sleep and avoiding alcohol and drugs. If you think you may be dealing with some form of depression, reach out to your doctor immediately for a consultation and potential treatment.

HOW FAMILIES CAN CONTROL REMOTE LEARNING Amid concerns of coronavirus clusters and efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19, and based on social distancing recommendations from medical professionals, schools across the country began to close their doors and adopt a remote learning model in March 2020. One of the largest communities affected was New York City, which closed schools across the five boroughs. The New York City school system is vast, with 1,800 schools servicing more than one million students. School administrators and educators quickly scrambled to find a workaround to meet children’s educational needs. Remote learning has been a part of many school curriculums for some time. While remote learning had predominantly been reserved for higher learning institutions, in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, it became a necessity for grades K through 12 as well. Teachers have had to design curriculums and assignments virtually on the fly in an attempt to minimize disruptions that could adversely affect students. Remote learning requires the cooperation of school staff and also parents and guardians. Patience is
necessary, and parents and educators may need to completely transform their daily schedules. The following tips can be an asset as students continue to navigate remote learning. • Record class sessions. Teachers can consider recording or “going live” with class instruction so that students can view the video and still have access to their teachers. This helps parents who may be unfamiliar with explaining the curriculum. • Utilize chat features. Remote education software programs likely have a chat or “hangout” feature, which enables classrooms to keep in touch and ask questions in real time. • Keep a schedule. It’s easy to begin to sleep late and fall out of routine when not required to go to a school building. Families should make scheduling a priority, which can help students stay on top of lessons and complete their assignments on time. • Ask questions. Everyone is learning as they go, and further clarification may be needed. Students should email or chat with teachers if they don’t understand an assignment or are unsure about instructions. Teachers may be able to clearly model a math problem or explain a concept
HELPING CHILDREN COPE It is very important to remember that children look to adults for how to react during stressful times. With the COVID-19 virus gaining international media attention, information about the pandemic is everywhere. If parents seem overwhelmed with the situation, children will naturally react in the same way. As parents, teachers and other adults in the lives of children, it’s up to us to reassure and educate them in the most honest, compassionate way possible.
TIPS ON INTERACTING WITH CHILDREN Here are some tips on talking about COVID-19 with your children or students, according to the National Association of School Psychologists: • Remain calm and reassuring. • Make yourself available. • Avoid excessive blaming. • Be aware of their exposure to the news. • Maintain a normal routine, if possible.
MODEL BASIC HYGIENE The NASP recommends you teaching children the following hygiene measures: • Wash hands multiple times a day for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star slowly). • Cover mouths with tissue when sneezing or coughing
and throw away the tissue immediately, or sneeze or cough into the bend of the elbow. • Do not share food or drinks. • Practice giving fist or elbow bumps instead of handshakes.
CARRYING ON WITH NORMAL LIFE Encourage your child to eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep and exercise regularly. Not only will this give them comfort during disruptions, but it will help their immune system stay strong. Going along with this guidance, you should also take the time to talk with your children. Don’t go out of your way to avoid conversations related to COVID-19. If they have questions, be ready to give them educated answers and advice on dealing with any inquiries they may have.
HANDLING CHILDRENS ANXIETY • Be honest and accurate. What you say and do about COVID-19 can either increase or decrease your children’s anxiety levels related to the virus and the news they are hearing. Remind them that you and the adults at their school or daycare are there to keep them safe and healthy. Always let your children talk about their feelings in a safe way. This will help them get things into the open and allow for opportunities for you to educate them on what’s going on.

The number of professionals working remotely has risen dramatically over the last decade-plus. According to an analysis from Flexjobs and Global Workplace Analytics, there was a 159 percent increase in remote between 2005 and 2017. That shift toward remote work might have been silent and gradual for much of the 21st century, but the volume was ramped up during the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in the United States in March 2020. In an effort to slow the spread of the potentially dangerous virus, government officials urged businesses to allow their employees to work remotely, and just like that the number of remote workers skyrocketed. The internet has made it possible for businesses in various industries to go remote, but such a transition does have some unique challenges.

Many businesses were thrown into the proverbial deep end when forced to go remote due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Challenges present themselves during such transitions, but these challenges can be overcome with a handful of effective strategies.

The spread of COVID-19 has upended many people’s lives. As with other virulent health crises, the practice of social distancing has been recommended to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 outbreak. One way to socially distance oneself is to avoid unnecessary trips to places where the public may congregate, such as grocery stores. Some people visit supermarkets and other food stores every day, especially if they don’t meal plan or shop for the week. According to the Time Use Institute, the average shopping trip takes 41 minutes and people go food shopping an average of 1.5 times per week. Any additional time spent at the grocery store increase the likelihood of contact with others, potentially increasing shoppers’ risk of contracting coronavirus as well. Therefore, people taking steps to stay at home may have to rethink the way they purchase and use food. Being more mindful of food waste and putting leftovers and ingredients to use in new ways can help stretch food further and reduce the need to make frequent trips to the grocery store. Consider these ideas to make use of leftovers. • Save those vegetables. It’s easy to scrape a half-portion of uneaten vegetables into the trash thinking it can’t be used. Instead, combine it with other vegetables accumulated throughout the
week. Many play well together and can be mixed into casseroles, omelets, soups, and stir-fry recipes. • Create new meals. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers. • Think beyond dinner. Leftovers can be collected at any time of day and used later on. Cold cuts can be chopped and used to make a stromboli with some refrigerated pizza dough. Save Belgian waffles from breakfast and top with breaded chicken fingers for a delicious chicken-and-waffles meal for lunch or dinner. Leftover roasted potatoes and scraps of ham can be used in a breakfast hash. • Stuck on starches. Turn extra rice from dinner into arancini (rice balls) for a snack on another day. A leftover sweet potato or two can be mixed with butternut squash to make a sweet and healthy mashed side dish. Mashed potatoes can be transformed into potato croquettes or potato pancakes. Finding new ways to use leftovers means minimal waste and fewer trips to the supermarket.
