2019 rates, changes, deductions Each year, the Internal Revenue Service updates, or indexes, the annual inflation adjustments for a number of provisions for the tax year, including tax rate schedules, tax tables and cost-of-living adjustments for certain tax items. Your return for 2019, which will be due on April 15, 2020, will feature the same lower tax rates for 2018 which were created by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. These rates are 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. Another change, noted by the financial experts at Kiplinger, the personal financial advice firm, is the method used to adjust tax brackets for inflation. Tax brackets were previously adjusted based on the Consumer Price Index, the variation in prices paid by typical consumers for retail goods and other items. But some economists thought the formula failed to account fully for changes in spending as prices rise. Subsequently, the so-called “chained index” has come into
play for 2019 adjustments. Chained indexing should result in lower inflation adjustments and could result in a higher tax bracket. The bottom line: If your income rises faster than inflation, you pay more taxes. Also, if you were looking for the so-called marriage penalty to disappear, look again. This law still exists and taxes couples who file jointly and whose incomes are similar more than if they were single. This twist used to affect the four highest brackets, but since the TCJA went into effect, only the top bracket is vulnerable to the penalty. Be warned, advises Kiplinger, couples who earn more than $612,350 in taxable income for 2019. Other changes include the elimination of the individual mandate penalty for the Affordable Care Act, a higher medical expense deduction threshold, no alimony deduction and higher retirement account and HSA contribution limits.

credit can get you between $529 and $6,557 in 2019 depending on how many kids you have, your marital status and if your adjusted gross income is less than about $56,000. Surviving an audit The idea of being audited strikes fear and loathing in the hearts of taxpayers. But before you begin to hyperventilate, take a breather and solace in the fact that only 0.6% of all individual income tax returns were recently audited, according to the IRS. But that low figure is not a license to fudge numbers or take deductions and credits for which you do not qualify. These actions can raise red flags that can trigger an audit. And you can almost expect the IRS to contact you if it finds discrepancies in your returns that may result in an audit. While stressful, most taxpayers who receive notice of an audit can survive the process. Unless you’ve done something wildly out of bounds, according to tax experts, an audit will result in one of three outcomes: You’ll owe. They’ll owe you. There’s no problem.

The IRS conducts three types of audits that can generally review your taxes for the previous three years,
to prepare your taxes, they should be present for any audit or can represent you without your presence. Tax-filing software companies often offer audit defense as part of packages and will offer assistance in the event of an audit.
In the end, it pays to be prepared and to know your rights. Ensure you have all your records and documentation in order and educate yourself on the process. You have a right to professional treatment, representation and an appeal in case the audit doesn’t go your way.

IMPACT OF THE YOUNG VOTERS
Americans ages 18 to 29 have much at stake in all elections, yet
only 23 percent will “definitely be voting,” according to a survey by Harvard University’s Institute of Politics. These young voters may have more at stake than any population in how the political process plays out over the coming decades. A study last year by the Urban Institute noted that the generation currently in and graduating from college have accumulated seven percent less wealth than their parents had at a comparable age. It estimated that today’s young Americans, the besteducated generation in U.S. history, nonetheless will lose at least 3 percent in earnings over their lifetimes, according to the study. © FOTOLIA

The low perennial turnout of young voters is especially troubling to non-profit leaders who are focused on building a more invested citizenry of educated voters – both young and old. Rock the Vote, the 24-year-old get-out-thevote organization started up by a music industry executive, has a goal
this voting season to register 400,000 new voters under age 30 and to encourage youth to make their presence felt at the polls. If enhancing their personal wealth and setting up their futures for financial success will ever be important to young people, now is the time. Our youth cannot afford to sit out yet another election while letting other people make political decisions for them.

iet and exercise are each vital components of a healthy lifestyle. While these components tend to be looked at separately, diet and exercise are actually interconnected.
According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), adequate food and fluid should be consumed before, during and after exercise. Following that advice can help men and women maintain their blood glucose concentration during exercise, which allows them to maximize their performance and improves their recovery time. Some people understandably may feel that eating before exercising seems counterintuitive, as food may contribute to feelings of sluggishness that would make it hard to maximize a workout. But what people eat, and drink, prior to working out is important, as the right foods can make a positive impact while the wrong foods can have the opposite effect.
The American Heart Association (AHA) and the ACSM recommend hydrating with water prior to working out. The ACSM recommends drinking between two and three cups of water two to three hours before exercising. Adults accustomed to working out in the early morning can try to wake up earlier so they can give their bodies time to hydrate before they begin exercising. It’s also important to continue hydrating during a workout, as the ACSM recommends drinking between 1⁄2 and one cup of water every 15 to 20 minutes during a workout (amounts can be adjusted based on variables such as the weather and individuals’ body sizes). After a workout, the ACSM recommends drinking two to three

The World Health Organization recommends that healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 64 perform at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week. Many adults cite hectic schedules as their reason for not getting enough exercise, but even those who do find time to exercise could find themselves sidelined if they do not take certain preventive measures to reduce their risk for injury. • Recognize your limitations. Once you have established a regular exercise routine and your body has grown accustomed to daily exercise, it can be tempting to overdo it or even unknowingly push your body to points that put you at a greater risk of injury. But recognizing your limitations is an essential part of avoiding injury. As you exercise more, you may notice certain areas of your body respond better to exercise than others. For example, if your wrists ache after strength training sessions, reduce the amount of weight you are lifting or look for strength-building exercises that don’t require lifting weights. • Warm up before each session. No matter how accustomed your body is to regular exercise, warming up before each workout is still necessary to avoid injury. Warming up before each workout elevates your heart rate and increases circulation, loosening the joints
and increasing blood flow to the muscles you’re about to exercise. Between five and 10 minutes of low-intensity cardiovascular exercise can help loosen up your body and prepare it for the more grueling workout to come. • Switch your routines every so often. When exercise becomes a part of your daily routine, you may end up hitting a plateau. When that happens, your workouts may feel less effective. Switching up routines every so often can combat that problem while also reducing injury risk to overtaxed muscles forced to endure the same exercises day in and day out. Diversify your workout every so often by choosing new exercises and switching up the cardiovascular portion of your workout. • Give your body time to rest and recover. Exercise feels good, both physically and mentally. Daily exercise can help adults lose weight, and shedding those extra pounds can improve mobility and help adults live more active and fulfilling lives. Exercise also causes the release of hormones known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. Those positive feelings can be somewhat addictive, but it’s important that adults give their bodies time to rest and recover between workouts. Lack of time to rest and recover makes bodies vulnerable to injury, so include time to recover in your weekly exercise regimen.

all of the oxygen and energy-delivering blood they need during a workout, so it’s best to stick with foods that the body can digest more quickly. The Mayo Clinic notes that it’s also important to make food a part of your post-workout routine. Eating a post-workout meal that contains both carbohydrates and protein can aid muscle recovery and replace glycogen stores that help increase energy levels after working out. The most effective way to exercise involves healthy foods, which can improve performance and lead to quicker post-workout recovery.
