While Mexico might be a great spot to seek out for fun in the sun, it might not be the best dental chair destination to resort to. Dr. Reid Stone, DDS of Northern Hills Dental, said that while there are good and bad dentists everywhere, regulations in the United States are there for a reason: to protect patients. “Just be careful when making the decision to cross the border for dental care,” Stone said. “It is valid to want to save money, and dentistry/healthcare in the US is expensive, compared to other countries, but the old saying ‘you get what you pay for,’ tends to ring true, here.” Stone said that while he has actually seen some dentistry that looked very good, he doesn’t know what’s under it or to what standard it was performed. “There are plenty of dentists in the US that are not as good as some of those in Mexico, so I don’t want to say it is all bad,” Stone said. “One of the issues is it is all about volume to keep their prices low. You might start with one doctor and then another one finishes it. You rarely get the same doctor over and over or one start to finish.” That said, most concerning to Stone about heading for the border when it comes to dental work is the lack of industry regulation in Mexico. “There is no regulation for safety like we have here in the United States,” Stone said. “What is the sterilization process or the equivalent CDC? If something goes wrong after you get back, how are you going to get taken care of? If you have an issue, what recourse do you have to get your problem solved? In the US, there is a dental board that is intended to protect the general public, which you do not get by traveling to Mexico.”
The main reason people are venturing south of the border for dental work is to save money. As evidenced in this example, though, that’s not always the case. “I had a patient who needed extensive treatment,” Stone said. “She decided to go to Los Algodones to have multiple implants placed. She did save some money by having the procedure done in Mexico. But, she did not get what she thought she was getting. She left with a denture and thought she was paying for teeth that screwed in. When she came back, the implants were not placed to spec and she ended up spending a lot more money trying to get the teeth to screw in place like she originally wanted. All in all, she ended up spending considerably more than she would have, had she had the procedure done in the US rather than in Mexico in the first place. Fortunately she did not have any health complications from the episode.” While cost savings are the typical reason more and more aging Americans and otherwise are seeking out these types of “cheaper” services, Stone said the verdict is out. “Among other reasons, the towns that are across the border are typically not the safest places to visit,” he said. “There are many dentists that did their training in the US and then practice in these border towns. The schooling is set up a lot different and is not as involved as the dental schools in the US.
