61st annual Stock Show offers something for everyone RAPID CITY — Visitors to the 61st annual Black Hills Stock Show running Friday, Jan. 25 through Sunday, Feb. 3, will find something to suit every taste. “The Black Hills Stock Show is Rapid City’s single largest event,” General Manager Ron Jeffries said. It provides many benefits for all types of people. “For the retailers, it’s like a second Christmas. For the country folks, it’s a great opportunity to come out and market your cattle or to buy new seed stock for your herds,” Jeffries added. The Stock Show also provides ample opportunity for entertainment before calving season begins on the ranch, according to Jeffries. He said scheduling adjustments will give early attendees a chance for social time. Adjustments include this year’s Merck Stray Gathering, which will be held at 7 p.m., Jan. 25. Participants will have a chance to compete that day and sell their horses the next day if they wish to do so. Jeffries said PRCA rodeo performances and cattle shows are the primary draws. He added the Truck Defender Horse Sale (Jan. 25 and 26) remains a big part of the Stock Show. A program called “Crazy Keys Dueling Pianos” will begin at 8 p.m. Jan. 26 following this year’s Truck Defender Horse Sale at the James Kjerstad Events Center. This free event
is making its Black Hills Stock Show debut. Jeffries said the ranch rodeo, the Boots and Beer Festival, and concerts continue to grow. He added the ranch rodeo crowd constitutes the Stock Show’s core customer. “We’ve always had good volunteers, good board of directors,” Jeffries said. “That is the thing that’s kept it going all these years.” Jeffries has served as general manager for more than 20 years. He was an insurance agent for the Central States Fairgrounds and attended meetings to advise them on insurance coverage. He was volunteered for a committee and placed on the board nine months later. Management was changed; Jeffries applied for the general manager position. Jeffries recalled using two phones at once during his early days. His father observed this and told him, “One thing about this job: you can work here four years and say you’ve got eight years’ experience.” As for one of the biggest changes, Jeffries said, “The quality of cattle just continues to improve. That’s the heart of what makes the Stock Show work.” Jeffries said visitors’ entertainment demands have increased. He added the Stock Show gets new-event ideas from attendees and examines.what works at this stock show and others. He said entertainment is sec-
ondary when growing a stock show. “But it is important that you give people something to do when they get here,” he added. “It’s just a great chance for us to host a whole variety of events throughout the run,” Jeffries said when asked what he enjoys
most about the Stock Show. Events like the CINCH Trade Show, Quilt Show, and seminars help attract other types of people to town, he added. Weather provides one of the biggest challenges for Jeffries and the committee. He said another challenge is finding enough room and space

Sutton Rodeo history The history of Sutton Rodeo Company parallels the growth and development of rodeo for nearly the entire 20th century and beyond. In 1926, the Edwin Sutton family began producing its own rodeos on the home ranch in Sully County. Originally the rodeo was just a pleasant pastime when a group of people got together on a Sunday. However, Edwin saw a possibility for profit and joined with George Fairbank to begin a touring rodeo. The Depression shut down the productions, and they did not begin again until the mid-1940s. James H. Sutton, Sr. took Sutton rodeo to the next stage in the 1950s when he entered into a partnership with Erv Korkow. As one of the first members of the RCA, Sutton/Korkow stock performed at the first National Finals Rodeo at Dallas, Texas in 1959. The Company won Bull of the Year with “Baldy” in 1961 and had Reserve Champion horses “Snake River” in 1962 and “Yellow Jacket” in 1964. James was the first Stock Contractor to be inducted in the PRCA Hall of Champions in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1982.
In 1968, James Sutton, Jr. became a partner with his dad forming Sutton Rodeo Company, and the tradition continued. Sutton Rodeo had three PRCA Horse of the Year awards: “Deep Water” in 1979 and “Big Bud” in 1985 and “Chuckulator” in 2012, Top Saddle Bronc of the World and WNFR. Sutton Rodeo stock has been selected to perform at 55 of the 57 National Finals Rodeos. Jim, along with wife Julie, took the company to the next level with a focus on production and innovation. Jim began the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo in 1978, a rodeo nominated 15 times for PRCA “Indoor Rodeo of the Year,” winning this award in 2002 and 2003. Jim originated the Wrangler Bullfights and the Bailey Bail-Off. He is famous for his pageantry and colorful rodeo openings, including the openings at the NFR in 1995-96. Jim has been nominated four times as “Stock Contractor of the Year.” Julie Sutton, an experienced rodeo secretary and NFR timer, is in charge of publicity and advance promotion.
Jim’s son, Steve, is co-owner of Sutton Rodeo and NFR pickup man in three decades (1978, 1981, 1986, 1993, and 1995). As the fourth generation of Sutton Rodeo Company, Steve joined the PRCA in 1976 and became a Stock Contractor in 1982. He takes great pride in the history of Sutton Rodeo, striving to breed top-quality bucking stock and produce top-notch rodeos. Steve particularly enjoys producing college, high school, and 4-H rodeos. In 2010, Steve was inducted into the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center as “Present Cowboy Great.” Wife Kim assists the rodeo company in the areas of timing, publicity and marketing, and has timed the NFR five times. Steve and Kim’s children, the fifth generation of Sutton Rodeo, while reaping the benefit of over 80 years of experience are hard at work, looking at ways to continue the legacy and add their own improvements to the company. Their daughter, Amy, is an NFR timer and is the office manager for Sutton Rodeos Inc. Her husband, Steven Muller, works with the livestock and ro-
deo production. Son, Brent, started his career as a pickup man in 2004, became a PRCA contestant in 2007, and has been the assistant NFR chute boss the past three years. Son, Brice works with the livestock and rodeo production, joining the PRCA ranks in 2010. All have pursued college degrees in Animal Science and/ or Business and use these degrees to continue the tradition of raising 90 percent of their breeding stock. Grandson Shaden James, son of Amy & Steven and granddaughter Ruby Belle, daughter of Brice and Alyssa, starts the sixth generation. Sutton Rodeo serves as the primary stock contractor and/or promoter and rodeo committee for seven South Dakota and one Minnesota rodeo with fan bases exceeding 85,000. South Dakota rodeos include the Corn Palace Stampede in Mitchell, the Sitting Bull Stampede in Mobridge, and the Crystal Springs Rodeo in Clear Lake. The company contracts an additional eight to 10 PRCA rodeos with livestock including Cheyenne Frontier Days and the Days of ’76 in Deadwood.

Cody Johnson headlines Black Hills Stock Show Cody Johnson will headline the Black Hills Stock Show Stampede Concert on Friday, Feb. 1, at the James Kjerstad Events Center. Johnson has earned recognition as the only unsigned artist in history to sell out NRG Stadium at Rodeo Houston. His ability to show his soul while singing and connect with fans made him “self-sufficient” and hold out on record labels. “On My Way To You”, Johnson’s first single, is followed by others such as “Wild As You” and “With You I Am” “inspired by ‘90s country foundation but built for the 21st century,” the Texas native pours raw power into his performances making them memorable. “We’ve been trying to get Cody Johnson to the Black Hills Stock Show for two years. He is the real deal, and we are glad to have him perform,” Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo General Manager Ron Jeffries said. The event will begin at 7 p.m with live music including local favorites. Tickets are $25 if purchased in advance, and $30 the day of show. Events for Saturday, Feb. 2, include the annual Boots and Beer Festival. Beer tasting of South Dakota breweries, along with live music, gets underway at 7 p.m. from the Kjerstad Events Center. Jeffries said this year’s Boots and Beer event will feature more breweries, including some from Custer and Sioux Falls. Southern Fryed Band and Brandon Jones will provide live music. Tickets are for the beer tasting and live music; attendees must be 21 years of age. Costs are $20 in advance or $25 the day of the event.
“Ride as ride can be” is the first rule when participating in the Black Hills Stock Show event Broncs for Breakfast. This event will feature a ranch bronc ride and a biscuit and gravy breakfast at the James Kjerstad Event Center on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Activities begin at 8 a.m. with a breakfast featuring biscuits and gravy, live music, and more. A calcutta is slated for 9 a.m., with the wild bronc riding starting at 10 a.m. Ranch bronc riding differs from the PRCA saddle bronc event in that all contestants will compete on a standard ranch stock saddle. Contestants have the option to grab hold with both hands as young horses will try to dismount the contestant. Points will be given to the most wild yet controlled ride. This event mimics the rides many regional ranch hands experience on a normal day of work. A total of 32 contestants will compete on Burch Rodeo horses in the long goround, with the top eight advancing to the finals. A guaranteed purse of $6,000 will be awarded to the top contestants in the event. The event will be sanctioned with

History of Black Hills Stock Show In 1958, members of the Rapid City Chamber Ag Committee had a meeting at Rapid City Laundry to discuss a plan for the future that would incorporate rural lifestyles into the urban community of Rapid City. It was at that laundromat the first plans for the Black Hills Winter Show were formed. At that time, only 12 percent of the population lived on farms or ranches. The concern was that, someday, the rancher would be an endangered species as many were moving away from the farm and ranch and into cities such as Sioux Falls and Rapid City. With the hopes of protecting agricultural communities and lifestyles, organizers committed to preserving the Western heritage in the state of South Dakota. The first Black Hills Winter Show was held in 1959 at the Central States Fairground’s Soule Building. A total of 91 head of livestock
entered in three breeds of cattle: Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn. Ranchers from around the region were able to showcase their livestock with the unique show and sale format, socialize with fellow ranchers, and market their breeding program at the end of January. The show was a testament to community support of the livestock industry. Multiple events were held throughout town such as a fashion show at the Arrowhead Country Club, 16 vendors in the Alfalfa Palace, and a cattleman’s pancake feed at a downtown restaurant in addition to the livestock shows. Businesses donated supplies and resources to support the event. The Ellsworth Air Force Base supplied engine heaters to heat the cold Soule Building during the shows. The event was a quick success. The following year, there were 112 head of cattle exhibited with 54 Herefords
averaging $591.34. It continued to grow year after year, and the Shorthorn World predicted the future by writing, “The Black Hills Winter Show is going to grow because it is held in cattle country.” In 1966, the first buffalo sale started in conjunction with the event at the Custer State Park Buffalo Corrals. This was also the time the most noticeable change happened. The Rapid City Chamber Ag Committee passed the reins of the Black Hills Winter Show over to the Black Hills Exposition (Central States Fair, Inc.). During the transition, the name changed to what we know it as today: the Black Hills Stock Show. Along with the success of the livestock shows, a horse sale was added to the event in 1973. By 1976, newspaper headlines were raving over the success of the horse sale as 33 head of horses totaled $17,945. Today’s horse sale
grosses more than $1.2 million, with the 2017 top-selling horse selling for $25,000 to a buyer from Washington. In 1978, the Black Hills Stock Show added a rodeo at the new Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Lacroix Hall would soon be home to the Horse Sale, and in 1980, the event officially moved all of the livestock shows, horse sales, and vendors to the new facility. Through the years, the stock show incorporated horse events utilizing Hart Ranch’s indoor riding arena. Today, the arena is home to Rapid City Christian High School. The Black Hills Stock Show allowed competitors to become familiar with the Black Hills area. Event producers would soon take notice of the destination for year-round events. The Central States Fairgrounds became a hub for agriculture competitions. Under the direction of the

Ranch rodeo takes competition to competitive roots Rodeo’s history begins with the local ranch hands and cowboys competing with and against each other for bragging rights. The pride in competition was only surpassed by the quality of the horses they rode to compete on. Rodeo Rapid City’s Sutton Ranch Rodeo gives spectators a chance to experience this early history. The preliminary round begins at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, inside
the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Barnett Arena. The format will consist of four-person teams competing in three preliminary events. The top 12 teams will advance to the final round at 7:30 p.m. that day. A calcutta for the finals teams will be held in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center’s Cowboy Bar at 5 p.m.
The finals consist of a progressive format with $10,000 in prize money at stake. There will be one elite competitor awarded the title of Top Hand and one horse awarded the title of Top Steed. All-American Sheep Day highlights mutton industry

Events include the National Sheep Shearing Championships, the North American Sheep Dog Trials, Mutton Bustin’, vendors, and educational seminars at the James Kjerstad Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds. Top billing for the day belongs to the North American Sheep Dog Trials. The trials are a timed competition requiring a handler to communicate with his or her dog to quickly pen a flock of sheep. Dog handlers compete for $5,000 in prize money. The event will start with the preliminaries at 11 a.m., and the top qualifiers will advance to the finals at 7:30 p.m.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting fires into Stock Show Cowboy Mounted Shooting is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports in the nation. Mounted shooting contestants compete in this fast-action, timed event, using two .45 caliber single action revolvers each loaded with five rounds of specially prepared blank ammunition. Dressed in 1800s Western clothing, they do their best to hit all 10 balloons, as any missed balloon is a 5-second penalty. Cowboy mounted shooting welcomes any level of rider. With ladies level 1-6, and Men’s level 1-6, Cowboy Mounted Shooting has a variety of levels of competition for everyone, ranging from novice levels to the seasoned professional. Competitions will be held Thursday, Jan. 31 and Friday, Feb. 1, at 10 a.m. in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and are free to the public. A Mounted Shooting Shoot Off will be held Friday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. during the PRCA Rodeo Rapid City performance. This is also at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The National Sheep Shearing Championships will once again partner with the sheep dog trials in which men and women from across North America will compete. Top finishers will advance to represent the United States at the 2019 World Finals. Sheep shearers will start their clippers at 10 a.m. Sheep riders from ages 3 to 6 years will compete in the Mutton Bustin’ at 7 p.m. Youngsters will have the opportunity to win trophies and prizes from Midco and Go Spur One.
Pennington County Commissioners and the Central States Fair Inc. ,a new indoor riding arena was created for the future of the Black Hills Stock Show and agriculture events in Rapid City. Today, the James Kjerstad Event Center is the horse capital of the Midwest. It houses national and regional shows year-round. These events prove to be an economic booster to the community as horse participants travel nationwide to the Rapid City destination to compete. Event producers that chose Rapid City as home paid out totals that have reached $3.4 million in recent years. Building of the James Kjerstad Event Center also boosted the attendance of the Black Hills Stock Show. In 2019, horse events will start two weeks before the traditional stock show dates featuring horse shows, cattle cuttings, and a team sort. Main attractions will include the Official Ranch Rodeo, Broncs for Breakfast, North American Sheep Dog Trials, National Sheep Shearing competition, Boots and Beer Festival, and Stock Show Stampede concert. Due to the addition of these events, Black Hills Stock Show attendance has grown from the once 150,000 guests to approximately 300,000 attendees. The event that once started in the unheated Soule Building at the Central States Fairgrounds now hosts multiple events throughout the city. The community support allows for guests traveling from the 13-state region to attend an event at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, James Kjerstad Event Center, art exhibits at the Dahl and Journey muse-

ums, seminars and business conferences at multiple hotels, plus socials at The Prairie Edge. It’s not just a livestock show, a horse show, rodeos, vendors, or youth events. It is the combination of all things Western and the cooperation of the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Rodeo Rapid City, and the Black Hills Stock Show that makes this event successful. Individually, these events would not have the longevity, but together, they are the recipe for the fourth-largest Stock Show in the nation following the Houston Livestock Show, San Antonio Stock Show, and the National Western Stock Show in Denver. All three of those are located in population bases exceeding the state of South Dakota. This year’s stock show brings new events and a new generation. The livestock shows are still the cornerstone of the stock show, with 430 head of livestock consigned in 10 different breeds in 2018. A total of 335 head were sold. Sales that once totaled $65,650 boasted a total sale gross of $1.44 million in 2018. Events such as the Boots and Beer Festival and the Black Hills Stock Show Stampede Concert are geared to entice the younger demographic to attend. Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo General Manager Ron Jeffries said the Stock Show needs to make money to stay in business. He added, “Many of the events we produce do not make money, but they bring people out to the event. Pioneer Breakfast celebrates past accomplishments The Pioneer Award Breakfast will honor those who have impacted and contributed to the success of the 61st annual Black Hills Stock Show and the agriculture industries with four awards to individuals, ranch operations, and businesses. This year’s event is set for at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Hilton Garden Inn, in Rapid City. Those to be recognized at the event include: Pioneer Ranch Award, Hunter Ranch of Ardmore, S.D.; Pioneer Spirit Award, Dale McPherson Family of Rapid City S.D.; Pioneer Awards, John E. Johnson of Piedmont S.D., Patty Brunner of Rapid City S.D., and Bud Ireland of Box Elder S.D. Honorees follow:
Pioneer Awards: Bud Ireland —
Bud Ireland was born in 1946 to Theodore and Gerry Ireland and started his childhood on the family ranch at Folsom, about one mile south of Railroad Buttes. His grandfather had purchased this ranch from Henry Larson and then resold it to his parents. Ireland attended Folsom School Bud for the first eight Ireland grades. It was three miles across country to school, and most days he rode to and from school horseback. He went to high school in New Underwood and lived in the school dormitory until his senior year when he went to live with Fred and Violet Tisdale he went to college at Northern State and became a teacher. He taught one year in Rawlins, Wyo., and then returned to Rapid City and has taught junior high mathematics for 40 years. About a year after graduating from college, he married his high school sweetheart, Peggy Cox, who was also a teacher. They are now both retired from teaching, and still stay busy with their horse operation, a small herd of cows, and they raise and sell bred heifers. They have two daughters. Kami is a veterinarian and partner in Dakota Hills Veterinary Clinic in Rapid City. Lana is a doctor of physical therapy and works at Peak Motion Physical Therapy in Spearfish. Lana is married to Levi Dacar, and they have one daughter, Ellie. They live on the Muleshoe Ranch which is located on the Belle Fourche River near Colony, Wyo. Ireland served several decades on the South Dakota High School Rodeo Board and the New Underwood Roping Club, and he also served on the Pennington County Conservation Board, the Central States Fair Horse Board, and was a 20-year member of the SD Buckaroos. His two daughters produce the 5-State Breeders Barrel Futurity each summer,
and Ireland volunteers to help and manage the ground for the event.
John E. Johnson
John Johnson was born in Spearfish and raised on a cow/calf ranch in Harding County, near Sorum. He attended eight years of country school, graduated from Spearfish High School, and graduated from South Dakota State University in 1972 with degrees in animal science and economics. Johnson went into the banking business in July 1972. He spent 15 years with US Bancorp, 22 years with First Western Bank, and John E. eight years with Johnson First Interstate Bank. Johnson retired in December 2016 after 45 years of banking in western South Dakota. Johnson has announced quarter horse sales for 46 years and announced the Black Hill Stock Show Sale for over 40 years, reading pedigrees and serving on the Horse Sale committee for many years. He was one of the incorporators of the Black Hills Stock Show Foundation and served on the board of directors for many years. Johnson has preciously been selected as the First Black Hills Stock Show Business Man of the year.
Patty (Hoar) Brunner
Patty Hoar was raised on the Hoar family ranch in Fall River County, being involved in all ranching activities as well as the household chores. She attended Provo School in Igloo for all grades, graduating in 1966 as valedictorian and a National Honor Society member. She attended USD and graduated Magna cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree and a masters dePatty gree in communication disorders. (Hoar) She worked Brunner in schools in a clinical setting with children and adults as a speech/ language pathologist for 37 years. Brunner’s community involvement includes 4-H as a member, leader, officer, and judge, St. Theresa Catholic Parish as a facilitator for Family Life Ministries, and serving on the funeral committee. Her extensive equine background include quarter horse breeder and promoter since 1970, Officer and member of Rapid City Quarter Horse Association, founding member of CONGHA, director and member of the Black Hills Riding Club, Coowner of Brunner/ Beauvias LLC/
Happy Horse Haus (accommodations for traveling equines and their owners, administrator of Grit and Perseverance Awards in memory of Don Brunner (passing in 2011). She was inducted into the Catalyst Club in 2015. Brunner gives credit to her devoted and mentoring parents John and Sadie, siblings (brothers: Bob Darrell, Don and sister Anice setting good examples and a loving and courageous husband Don and her son Brad (wife Nancy and three granddaughters) for his encouragement and support.
Hunter Ranch Ardmore, S.D. — Pioneer Ranch Award Jesse M. Rineer was born in Lancaster, Pa. on May 7, 1860. He farmed and mined for years in various states until 1886 when he came to Fall River County in South Dakota. There was no railroad then and the land was not surveyed, but he squatted on land and farmed it until the government survey was made. He promptly homesteaded it. By 1914 he owned 840 acres two miles from Ardmore, and in 1914 he was elected county commissioner. Laurel and He married Miss Sue E. Fowler, and John (Jack) they had four sons Hunter and four daughters. Rineer also owned Ardmore State Bank. Rineer’s daughter Marjorie, was born on Aug. 19,1899. She married John W. (Jack) Hunter on Dec. 22, 1917. They ranched next to her parents and after Jesse died, they took over managing her mother’s place. In 1931 they bought the original place from her mother . Jack Sr. was a World War I veteran and a member of the American Legion for 50 years. He served as a member and chairman of the Selective Service System Board 23 of Hot Springs for 16 years. Jack Sr. passed away in 1968 and Marjorie followed in 1979. Their son John W. Hunter Jr. (Jack) was born on June 17, 1922. He graduated from Lusk, Wyo. High School in 1940, and attended Mesa College in Grand Junction, Colo. and then South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1942. He served as a lieutenant in the South Pacific and was honorably discharged as a captain in 1946. He married Mary Louise Berquist on May 17, 1947. Jack Jr. was a rodeo participant and later an announcer joining the PRCA in 1957 and was a member of the American Legion for 53 years. He was elected to the Fair Association Hall of Fame in
both North and South Dakota and was named associate of the year. He was man of the year for the National High School Rodeo Association and PRCA Badlands Circuit Announcer of the year. He ranched in partnership with his father and his brother until 1974. John C. Hunter (Jack) was born April 4, 1951, to Jack and Mary in Hot Springs. He graduated from Edgemont High School in1969. Jack married Laurel Erickson on Feb. 20, 1971. He graduated from South State University in 1973 with a degree in animal science. They had three children: Kristen, Ross, and Alicia. Jack was president of the Jaycees in Edgemont, was a state director, and served on the Agriculture Advisory Board for South Dakota State University. He also was a member and served as Ardmore Volunteer Fire Chief. He served on and was president of the Fall River Predator board along with running the ranch. He purchased the Edgemont Livestock Market in 1985. He then partnered in the Crawford Livestock Market in 1988 and the Gordon Livestock Market in 1992. He and his wife, Laurel, have been sole owners of Crawford Market since 2003. They closed the Edgemont Livestock Market in 1993 and sold Gordon Market in 2004. Jack is a member of the Livestock Marketing Association and is currently serving as the Nebraska State president. The ranch still uses the Turkey Track brand that Jack Sr. recorded in the 1930s.
Dale McPherson and Family — Pioneer Spirit Award
The Pioneer Spirit Award is awarded to individuals who do not fit solely into the ranching and agriculture field but have made notable contributions to the agriculture industry and community. Dale McPherson was born and raised on a ranch 26 miles east of Sturgis along Alkali Creek. Dale’s father, Eugene McPherson, was one of the earliest homesteaders in Meade County. Dale’s first auctioneering job was given to him by Jim Madden and Harley Roth, who ran the Sturgis Livestock Exchange. They had caught wind that Dale had been practicing auctioneering Dale and in the barn and Dorothy wrote him a letMcPherson ter asking him to come to town and help with an upcoming sale. Black Hills Stock Show Banquet and ball honors regional cattlemen The Black Hills Stock Show Stockman’s Banquet and Ball will honor the accomplishments of five individuals at the annual event on Saturday, Jan. 26. This event has a tradition of honoring those who have excelled in the agricultural industry as stockmen and agri-business people. A special “Hall of Fame” distinction is awarded to an individual who has been influential in the growth and support of the Black Hills Stock Show. New this year is the Horse Person of the Year award, honoring an individual that has excelled in the equine industry. The 2018 Stockman’s Ball honorees include Scott Dirk of Vale; Troy and VeaBea Thomas of Harrold; NanCee Maynard of Box Elder; and Dean Johnson of Vale.

The Black Hills Stock Show will honor NanCee Maynard as the Silver Spur “Hall of Fame” recipient. Maynard has been an active member of Central States Fair, Inc. She has been involved with the rodeo committee and open class committees along with serving many terms on the Central States Fair Board of Directors. As a volunteer, Maynard has been involved with every aspect of the fair and the stock show, from taking tickets and entries for the bronc match to organizing the Horticulture
The new Horse Person of the Year award will be presented to horse trainer Dean Johnson. Dean and his wife Becky operate the Dry Creek Ranch north of Vale, and own and operate Prairie Industries along with training horses for competition. He is the South Dakota representative for the AQHA Board of Directors, along with chairman of the horse committee for the Black Hills Stock Show. His teamwork and cooperation helped advance the Black Hills Stock Show horse sale to a nationally recognized sale, grossing more than $1.2 million for the two-day event. Dean has been a director for the Black Hills Stock Show along with the South Dakota Quarter Horse Association and is a proponent to advance and support the horse industry in South Dakota. The Stockman’s Banquet and Ball will be held at the Best Western Ramkota starting at 6 p.m., with a social and banquet to begin at 7 p.m. This event will feature a banquet, youth scholarship auction, and live music along with presentations of the five honorees.

Dale was also auctioneer for the Western Jr. Auction for 50 years. Dale is married to Dorothy, who over the years helped clerk many of Dale’s sales, and they just recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Today, Kevin and Todd, Dale and Dorothy’s sons, are in the auction business with McPherson Auction & Realty which has truly become a family affair. Kevin and Todd grew up around auctioneering and in 1995, Kevin followed in his dad’s footsteps and became the South Dakota State Champion Auctioneer. He is also a past director and past president of the South Dakota Auctioneer Association. The McPherson family has been involved in the Black Hills Stock Show and Central States Fair for a number of years. McPherson Auction & Realty and the McPherson family have contributed much to the agriculture industry in South Dakota and have become a vital part of what makes agriculture and the western community in South Dakota so successful.

Rodney Yost to host horsemanship clinics Rodney Yost Horsemanship Demonstrations are free to the public and will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in the Barnett Arena. Yost is a fourth-generation South Dakota rancher who has been involved with the ranching and horse customs his entire life. He has been on horseback since he was a baby in diapers on his family’s ranch, started training ponies at the age of 10, and trained his first horse at the age of 13. Since then, he has become one of the top horse trainers and clinicians in South Dakota and throughout the Midwest. Over the past few years, Yost has instructed many horsemanship clinics and demonstrations for all ages and riding levels. His unique training style and sense of humor have made him a sought-after horsemanship clinician throughout the United States and Canada. He is the first and only 4-time champion of the Crosswinds Ranch Colt Training Challenge that is held at Michigan State University every spring, and has won multiple Ranch Horse Colt Futurity competitions. He has become known for creating a relationship with his horses to produce extremely supple, well-mannered, and responsive horses that are capable of many disciplines.

World’s Smallest Rodeo scheduled for Jan. 26
The First Interstate Bank World’s Smallest Rodeo will be held at 10 a.m.on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Rushmore Hall in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. It is full of cowboys, cowgirls and stick horses,ages 3-5 years of age. They participate in stick horse barrel racing, pole bending, and a stick horse wild ride portion.The World’s Smallest Rodeo is a great family event for grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles along with many smiles from the young cowboys and cowgirls.
