Wounded Warriors Family Support

Supporting Military Families When America goes to war, our families go to war. Our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines face the kind of stress that most Americans will never know. That stress takes its toll on more than just the military members themselves, but also their families. The strain on the family is only increased when a family member is wounded or killed while serving. Wounded Warriors Family Support is an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for the families of our combat wounded. Having earned Charity

Navigator’s highest four-star rating, Wounded Warriors Family Support aids veterans and their families in healing the wounds that medicine cannot. This organization originated from a smallscale, pass-the-hat campaign initiated by Col. John Folsom in 2003 benefitting U.S. soldiers at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany — the first stop for wounded military personnel from Iraq and Afghanistan before returning home. From those humble beginnings, Wounded Warriors Family Support has grown into a national organization.

Provides support and assistance to caregivers of wounded veterans.

These retreats provide wounded warriors and their families a peaceful place to heal and reconnect with their loved ones.

As a partnership with UAW-Ford, this program provides veterans with skills to pursue in-demand careers in welding.

Native American Veterans Support, Transition and Respite (NAVSTaR)

The NAVSTaR program provides vehicles to Native American tribes to assists in getting veterans to and from VA hospitals. We host numerous awareness and fundraising events across the nation benefitting wounded warriors and their families. Among them, the High Five Tour stands out as our main event.

Bullitt: Revisiting that golden chase

sk any motor-head to name to most exciting car chase in the history of cinema and one will hear overwhelming the answer – “Bullitt ”. The scene when Steve McQueen, in a Ford Mustang, pursues a pair of hooligans in a Dodge Charger through the precipitous streets and rolling hills of San Francisco is still rated the most realistic car pursuit and is the progenitor of any subsequent movie car chase despite the film being 50 years old.

Even though the chase sequence in the film lasted ten minutes, filming took three weeks throughout the recognizable streets in and around San Francisco. The speeds were REAL without any computer generated imaginary – just lots of clashing metal, squealing tires and howling V8 engines. The sound recording was exceptionally good, emphasizing the differences between the two cars – the higher pitched Ford Mustang and the more muted growl of the Dodge Charger R/T.

The Ford Motor Company lent two 390GT models for the filming of “Bullitt” to Warner Brothers. What a perfect stage to entice potential buyers. At that time, the new 1968 Mustangs were bigger and faster than the previous pony models. This was aimed to keep an edge over the rival muscle cars such as the Camaro and the Charger. However, the engines, brakes and suspensions of the two loaners were modified to take the regimen for the filming of the movie. Also, at the request of Steve McQueen, Carroll Shelby personally removed the badges and chromework on the Mustangs to give them their known mysterious appearance. Some cars from the era went to the scrapyard. Many think the Mustang would have joined them if not for the romantic lure “Bullitt”.

1968 Bullitt

n the 1968 classic movie entitled “Bullitt,” Steve McQueen gave every future James Bond and Jason Bourne a driving lesson. Not only were the audiences mesmerized in their seats but they felt as though they were riding shotgun as the muscle car maneuvered through the steep streets and hills of San Francisco. This was Hollywood’s first major car chase shot not on a studio lot, but in real- time, at real speeds. McQueen, an accomplished race car driver, was the key to designing this in a way that had never been seen before and drafted out the chase scenes himself. The ten minute car pursuit required director Peter Yates to close off 60 square blocks of the city. Driving faster than 110 mph and the legendary jump sequence meant a number of close calls, even causing the residents of San Fran to call the police. Bullitt was select for preservation in the United States National Film

Registration by the Library of Congress for its artistic character, historical significance and its aesthetical reflection of both the good and bad side of American culture. However, the movie’s other star was its 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback. Together, car and driver were the epitome of old-school cool. It was a beautiful car - fast, low-lying, smooth and stealthy. After the movie, the Bullitt Mustang was just as stealthy -- it disappeared. For decades, the Mustang became the Holy Grail for car collectors. And it became a “family secret” for Robbie Kiernan. Her late husband, Robert, saw an ad in the back pages of Road and Track Magazine, and bought the Bullitt Mustang in 1974 for $6,000. Their purchase was surreal, especially when they had seen the movie in the theater and then bought the “pony” for a daily driver. Upon acquiring the car, the couple noticed it still had the camera

mounts underneath the chassis and a huge hole in the trunk for the smoke machine. The growl of the Mustang’s V8 engine was deafening. “I taught at a Catholic school, and the nuns heard the car and said, ‘Well, there’s Robbie!’” she said. At one point Steve McQueen tracked them down and asked the Kiernans to buy back the Mustang. They declined the generous offer since it was now a part of their family. After 1980, the car was garaged, out of sight, in a barn on their family farm in Tennessee. Last year, Robbie’s son Sean restored it top to bottom. Today, it’s 98 percent original. Sean intent was to preserve history and not to make it shiny new. The Kiernans are finally going public with the family secret. They rolled it out at the Detroit Auto Show, in its original raw, faded glory. It’s now registered as a historic vehicle and is touring throughout the United States country, appearing before a whole new generation audience.

ention the word “Sturgis” to pretty much any motoring enthusiast and visions of motorcycles invariably come to mind. After all, Sturgis, South Dakota, is a veritable mecca for folks of the two-wheeled variety. In recent years, however, this unassuming town on the edge of the famous Black Hills has also become a popular destination for enthusiasts seeking four-wheeled fun. Car clubs of all makes and models visit the area each year – but let’s be honest, there’s really only one manufacturer that matters, and not just because its logo is a cool Blue Oval. In fact, of all the car events that take place in and around Sturgis every year, the annual Sturgis Mustang Rally held over Labor Day weekend is the biggest of them all. At this point, some of you might be

wondering what makes Sturgis such a special destination for Mustang lovers. After all, this small town of 7,000 people is something of an oasis in a sea of sparsely populated hills and prairie – off the beaten path from just about everything. The rally itself is packed with events; but, there’s something very special and unique that makes the Sturgis Mustang Rally a stand-out, mustvisit event. Unofficially, upwards of 1,000 cars have been making the 11 year pilgrimage to western South Dakota to partake in an event that spans nearly an entire week. Mustangs from all generations began rolling into town the weekend prior even though events don’t officially begin until Tuesday afternoon with a golf outing that has become a recent tradition for the rally. From that point until the massive banquet Sunday evening, the entire Black Hills region becomes a Mustang playground for those who love to cruise,

Their primary objective was to organize a Mustang car event that would go against the grain of the tradition concourse shows. The official itinerary for rally goers include auto crossing, drag racing, an autocross driving school, an unsanctioned car show in historic downtown Deadwood, another unbelievable car show that encompasses the entire town of Sturgis, and scheduled cruises every day that included a memorial run for United States Veterans, a fun run through the Northern Black Hills, and a 100-plus mile poker run to the Southern Black Hills region. The headquarters for the rally is the famous Thunderdome just east of Sturgis – a sprawling venue where most of the racing events are held, not

to mention the banquet and numerous social functions that occur through the weeklong party. Also included on the property, are various vendors affiliated with the Ford Mustang. In the evenings, there are specialty events like the Mustang Rodeo, where passengers try to lasso mini “horses” while drivers navigate a slow-speed course. The Launch Box competition simulates the critical first 60 feet at the drag strip, only cars have to stop by the 60-foot mark as well. Barrel Racing gives drivers a chance to steer with the gas pedal, navigating a tight course of barrels in what usually becomes a smoky exhibition of opposite-lock skill. Of course, there’s also the Burn-Out contest that adds even more atomized rubber to the atmosphere. By the time the end of the event happens on Sunday, many attendees have accumulated hundreds of miles of cruising and racing action. However, there is still more opportunities for Mustang owners. Each registered rally participant have a chance to roll dice to win a brand new Mustang. Yes, the Sturgis Mustang Rally gives attendees a chance to win a special ‘Stang created just for the event. The beginning years of SMR this was not offered; but since the third rally, the committee has provided this prize. Closing ceremonies at the Thunderdome are made extra special with a wonderful ribeye steak dinner and presentations from invited guest speakers – who have been John Clor, Mike Rey and Steve Saleen in past years. No matter who is the guest, the

SMR committee always choses someone who can bring their knowledge and passion for the Mustang to the banquet. The variety of events and the camaraderie have certainly played a significant role in the rally’s success to become the largest Mustang gathering in the Midwest and one of the largest in the entire world. But the truth is that Sturgis – and South Dakota’s Black Hills – is one of the best-kept motoring secrets in the world. Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, Spearfish Canyon, and Devil’s Tower are all within an easy half-day drive of Sturgis. Folks who stay from Monday through Sunday can enjoy a different drive of epic proportions every single day without running the same route twice. Some of those routes include Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway, Badlands Loop Scenic Byway, Needles Highway which winds among the spectacular granite cliffs of Custer State

Park, and Iron Mountain Road – a 17mile stretch of highway with 314 curves and granite tunnels that is so amazing it has its own website. In addition, there are the incredible destinations like Devil’s Tower and of course Mt. Rushmore, but off-thebeaten-path stops like the South Dakota Air and Space Museum near Rapid City are just too numerous to mention. So yes, Sturgis and the Black Hills may not be close to anything, but being located in the middle of the country, the area isn’t that far from everything. And once you visit the area, you’re hooked for life. Guaranteed!!! When you combine all this with the kind of friendships forged through a shared love of America’s most iconic automobile, it’s no wonder the Sturgis Mustang Rally continues to grow. It’s an amazing event in an awe-inspiring location and is sure to be better than ever in the years to come.

He has since been featured in New York Newsday, The New York Times, The New York Post, The New York Daily News, and Brooklyn Bridge Magazine. Brian Travolta’s television credits include appearances on VH1, CNN, ABC and various talk shows and local news programs throughout the East Coast. The most prominent was a cameo on MTV’s “TRL with Carson Daly” while John Travolta himself was being interviewed! Brian Travolta’s Promotional appearances include visits to New York’s Madison Square Garden & Lincoln Center, Boston’s John F. Kennedy Library, Chicago’s Wrigley Field, and recurring gigs at several Atlantic City casinos. Brian is originally from Boston, MA and grew up in the South Shore. He graduated NYU’s Tisch School of The Arts, with a B.F.A. in Film & TV Production. He has since studied improvisational acting at Chicago City Limits, NY. Brian is also a screen actor and has been a member of the Screen Actors Guild for over five years. In addition to his many minor roles, Brian has been a Stand-In for other actors, including the stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Al Pacino, and Tobey Maguire.
