57th annual Black Hills Stock Show kicks off

The Black Hills Stock Show looks vastly different from its inception in 1959. The 57th annual event officially kicks off on Jan. 29 in Rapid City and features a wide variety of events, from cattle and equine exhibitions, national sheep sheering championship, sheep dog trials, a craft and art show and world-class rodeo competition. The first Stock Show began as the Black Hills Winter Show formed by the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce’s Ag Committee. That first year there were three breeds of cattle shown. In 1966 the chamber turned the event over to the Central States Fair and the name was changed to the Black Hills Stock Show. But it wasn’t until the 1990s that event organizers began treating the Stock Show not as another stock show, but as a vacation destination, said Ron Jefferies, the general manager of the Black Hills Stock Show. Today, according to the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, where many of the Stock Show events are held, more than 300,000 people attend at least one event in the civic center includ-

ing Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association sanctioned rodeos. But a week before the official start of the Stock Show, there are a variety of equine activities at the Central States Fair Grounds. Events include the Cowboy States Reigning and the twoday AQHA Horse Show. Today, the Black Hills Stock Show has 10 different breeds of cattle sales, a two-day horse sale, more than 300 vendors, and seminars to encourage both the livestock producers, horse enthusiasts or the run of the mill city folk to enjoy the 10-day extravaganza. New events have been added throughout the years; Black Hills Gold Rush: Cattle Genetics Sale, the Dakota Territory Buffalo Association Buffalo Sale, the AQHA Special Events Team Roping, the Ranch Rodeo, live music and the Stray Gathering. New to the 2016 Stock Show is the Broncs for Breakfast. The event will feature 24 Ranch Bronc Riders "Riding as Ride Can Be" for 8 seconds. The Ranch Bronc Ride is different from the rodeo saddle bronc riding, as all contestants must ride in a stock saddle.

Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign to benefit Regional Cancer Care Institute The Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign is celebrating 10 years of raising funds to help fight cancer. The 2016 campaign kicks off at this year’s Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo starting Jan. 29. Proceeds from all campaign sales at the Stock Show stay local and will benefit the Regional Cancer Care Institute, located at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Tough Enough to Wear Pink T-shirts are for sale at: the Regional Health Foundation Office at 2925 Regional Way, Suite 100; Dakota Radiology at 2929 5th St.; and the Regional Cancer Care Institute at 353 Fairmont Blvd. During the Stock Show, T-shirts will also be available at the Regional Health booth, located in the upper level of the Civic Center in Room F. The T-shirts are also available in the RH Foundation online store at: www.regionalhealth. com/pink. Tough Enough to Wear Pink Rodeo will take place at the Stock Show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4. The crowd is encouraged to wear 2016 Tough Enough to Wear Pink T-shirts at the rodeo. “Once again this year at the Black Hills Stock Show and

Rodeo, the color pink will be worn by the toughest cowboys and cowgirls,” said Shawn Powers, of the Regional Health Foundation. “Cancer has touched the lives of many in our ranching communities and the Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign helps promote cancer awareness, screenings and patient services at the Regional Cancer Care Institute. We are very excited to be part of something so big. This campaign allows us to have some fun and 100 percent of the funds raised stay in our community.” Through the years, monies raised through the campaign has purchased state-of-the-art cancer equipment at the Cancer Care Institute that benefit people throughout the region with many different types of cancer. Some examples are the Tomotherapy Unit and Treatment Board, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, and a G20 Ultrasound. Sutton Rodeo history

The history of Sutton Rodeo Company parallels the growth and development of rodeo for nearly the entire 20th century and beyond. In 1926, the Edwin Sutton family began producing its own rodeos on the home ranch in Sully County. Originally, the rodeo was just a pleasant pastime when a group of people got together on a Sunday. However, Edwin saw a possibility for profit and joined with George Fairbank to begin a touring rodeo. The depression shut down the productions and they did not begin again until the mid-40s. James H. Sutton, Sr., took Sutton rodeo to the next stage in the 1950s when he entered into a partnership with Erv Korkow. As one of the first members of the RCA, Sutton/ Korkow stock performed at the first National Finals Rodeo at Dallas, Texas, in 1959. The company won Bull of the Year with “Baldy” in 1961 and had Reserve Champion horses “Snake River” in 1962 and “Yellow Jacket” in 1964. James was the first stock contractor to be inducted in the PRCA Hall of Champions in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1982. In 1968, James Sutton, Jr. became a partner with his dad forming Sutton Rodeo Company and the tradition continued. Sutton Rodeo had three PRCA Horse of the Year awards, “Deep Water” in 1979, “Big Bud” in 1985 and “Chuckulator” in 2012, Top saddle bronc of the world and WNFR. Sutton Rodeo stock has been selected to perform at 54 of the 56 National Finals Rodeos. Jim, along with wife Julie, took the company to the next level with a focus on production and innovation. Jim began the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo in 1978. The rodeo has been nominated 15 times for PRCA “Indoor Rodeo of the Year” winning this award in 2002 and 2003. and is the office manager for Sutton Rodeos, Inc. Her husband, Steven, helps with the livestock and rodeo production. Son, Brent, started his career as a pickup man in 2004 and became a PRCA contestant in 2007. Son, Brice, works with the livestock and rodeo production, joining the PRCA ranks in 2010. All have pursued college degrees in animal science and/or business and intend to use their degrees to continue the tradition of raising 90 percent of their breeding stock. New event to feature ranch bronc riders

“Ride as ride can be” is the first rule when participating in the new Black Hills Stock Show event, Broncs for Breakfast. The event will feature a ranch bronc ride and a biscuit and gravy breakfast at the James Kjerstad Event Center on Wednesday, Feb. 3. Ranch bronc riding is different from the PRCA saddle bronc event in that all contestants will complete in a standard ranch stock saddle. Contestants have the option to grab hold with both hands as young horses will try to shake the contestant. Points will be given to the most wild yet controlled ride. The event mimics the wild rides many regional ranch hands experience on a normal day of work. “What makes this event unique is that all horses will buck, jump some may roll-over but the cowboys and cowgirls must stay on for the total eight second with no re-rides to be given. This is an event that is a true ranch competition and is open to anyone to compete,” said Ron Jeffries, Black Hills Stock Show general manager. A minimum of 24 contestants will compete on Burch Rodeo horses in the long-go with the top eight advancing to the finals. A guaranteed purse of $6,000 will be awarded to the top contestants in the event. The event will be sanctioned with the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association (WSRRA) and competing members will have the chance to win points and money that will advance them to the World Finals in Las Vegas, Nev. Jeffries said that the event has had interest from constants both male and female from eight different states. The Broncs for Breakfast will begin with biscuit and gravy breakfast at 8 a.m. The bronc ride will start at 10 a.m. Tickets include the breakfast and the event for $12 and are available at the Black Hills Stock Show office or online at www.blackhillsstockshow.com.

Ranch Rodeo draws top ranch hands

A total of 56 teams will compete for the coveted title of the 2016 Black Hills Stock Show Ranch Rodeo Champion. The event draws four-man teams from across the region to compete for over $30,000 in cash and prizes on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at the James Kjerstad Event Center located on the Central States Fairgrounds. “All teams will compete in the prelims with only the best to compete in the finals,” said Kevin Schmidt, chairman of the Black Hills Stock Show Ranch Rodeo Committee. “The champion team members will receive a trophy saddle, cash prizes and bragging rights.” The Black Hills Stock Show Ranch Rodeo is a true test of who is the best cowboy since the competitors compete in ranchlike chores, but at breakneck speed. The preliminary events will begin at 9 a.m. The field will be narrowed to 12 teams for the finals. The 2016 Black Hills Stock Show Ranch Rodeo and the Central States Fair Ranch Rodeos will automatically qualify for the final performance. Among those champions are 2015 Black Hills Stock Show Ranch Rodeo Champions, Graff Ranch from Ainsworth, Neb. Together Josh Graff, Brady Graff, Miles Stoner and Clint Doll beat out a total of 53 teams to claim top honors at the 2015 event. Kick up your boots at the Black Hills Stock Show Stampede

Along with the rodeos, livestock shows and horses events, the Black Hills Stock Show organizers will bring two-days of live entertainment that will feature both music entertainment on Friday, Feb. 5 and music and a beer festival on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the James Kjerstad Event Center located on the Central States Fairgrounds. The first night of stampede entertainment will feature a mini-music festival with Texas Country superstars Reckless Kelly headlining the event, along with Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band, and dueling pianos. For 15 years Reckless Kelly from Austin, Texas, has released chart toping music on the Texas Music airwaves. The group started by brothers, Willy and Cody Braun, has had a total of 10 albums including two live albums, which emphasizes their musical talent and their reputation as a must-see musical group. Credited to their name is a 2011 Grammy nomination, four Lone Star Music Awards and three #1 singles on Texas Radio. Regional country band, Chancey Williams and The Younger Brothers will

perform prior to Reckless Kelly on Friday and headline the Boots and Beer Festival on Saturday, Feb. 6. The Wyoming native and The Younger Brothers Band have performed on both regional and national stages, including the Cheyenne Frontier Days, and the National Finals Rodeo's Fan Zone in Las Vegas, Nev. The Boots and Beer Festival will feature a beer-tasting event showcasing nine regional breweries from 7-9 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6. All patrons will receive a beer tasting mug and the chance to taste and visit with beer brewers in the second annual event. The event will offer more brewers and more beer samples available from the inaugural event in 2015. Brewers from South Dakota and one from Sheridan, Wyo., will set up during the western event. Music entertainment slated for the beer festival includes Dueling Pianos from 7-9 p.m., Brandon Jones and the Thristy Fish from 9-11 p.m. and closing the night will be Chancey Williams and the Younger Brothers Band from 11:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Daily passes are available for $15 in advance or $20 at the door with the beer

Equine events set the stage for 2016 Black Hills Stock Show

Courtesy photo Top notch equine events provide a great prequel to the 2016 Black Hills Stock Show with events being held beginning Jan. 23 at the James Kjerstad Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds in Rapid City. The Zoetis Winter Classic American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Show runs Jan. 24-28. This triple-judged AQHA event means each horse is eligible for

three-times the points with only one show. Jan. 25 brings the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Winter Spectacular to the James Kjerstad Event Center. Fast action, quick turns and great horsemanship will be on display. This event runs concurrently with the AQHA Working Cow Horse Classes. The Black Hills Stock Show Stray Gathering is set

for 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 29. The Stray Gathering event is open to public entry. The stray gathering is a four-person team timed event, where two members of each team are required to rope and tie two steers in a timely manner. Following the event, everyone can enjoy a great evening of free Cowboy Music with Brandon Jones and The Thirsty Fish. The official kick-off of the Black Hills Stock Show equine events is the two-day South Dakota Quarter Horse Association (SDQHA) Black Hills Stock Show Horse Sale, Jan. 29-30, beginning at 2 p.m. each day at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The SDQHA Black Hills Stock Show Horse Sale Previews begin each day at 8 a.m. at the Kjerstad Event Center. The SDQHA Horse Sale features top consignments from throughout the country. Along with the horse sale, top stallion owners in the nation will display their stallions Jan. 29-30 in an area known as SDQHA Stallion Row. Stallions will be previewed prior to the horse sale on both Friday and Saturday at 1:20 p.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The SDQHA Stallion Row is an opportunity for horse enthusiasts to view stallions and plan stallion bookings for the 2016 breeding season. Other horse events to watch are the Ranch Horse Competition on Sunday, Jan. 31 and Monday, Feb. 1. This special horse event will judge riders and trainers on their ability to accomplish common ranch tasks such as roping, cattle sorting, dragging objects, and crossing obstacles. An Open Jackpot Team Roping and a 4-D Barrel Race will conclude the horse events at the Kjerstad Event Center. The team roping will take place on Saturday, Feb. 6 and the Barrel Race will wrap up the Black Hills Stock Show on Sunday, Feb. 7. A total of 10 days of horse events will allow horse competitors the opportunity to compete at the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo. All horse shows, previews, team roping and barrel racings are free to the public. 2016 20X High School Showcase

An extreme showcase of South Dakota’s finest high school cowboys and cowgirls. That is exactly what you will find at the 14th Annual 20X Showcase. The event kicsk off at 1 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center’s Barnett Arena. More than 110 top high school rodeo athletes will be geared up and ready to go as they get an opportunity to showcase their rodeo talents. South Dakota has four regions of high school rodeo contestants. Two $500 scholarships, one from Wrangler and one from South Dakota Buckaroos and two $1,000 scholarships from the Black Hills Stock Show Foundation are available for senior contestants, The 20X Extreme College Fair will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the south balcony of the Barnett Arena. This is a great opportunity for contestants to visit with NIRA rodeo coaches from South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Wyoming. The showcase is an opportunity to see some of the best young rodeo talent South Dakota has to offer, matched up against top stock, competing in the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo venue. Combine this with the top contract personnel in the PRCA, and fans are sure to receive an afternoon of pure rodeo entertainment.

Pioneer Breakfast honors legends in agriculture

The 24th annual Black Hills Stock Show Pioneer Breakfast will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Central States Fair Fine Arts Building. The breakfast will honor three area individuals who have been pioneers in the ranching industries and strong supporters of the Black Hills Stock Show. Recipients this year include Piedmont rancher Eliot Kammerer and Janet Zietlow of Scenic. The Pioneer Sprit Award will be presented to Peggy Ables of Spearfish.

Junior Livestock Shows. A 1976 SDSU graduate, Kammerer and wife Cokie settled on the family ranch in Piedmont. In the 1980s, Kammerer began to volunteer at the Central States Fair and continued to do so for 23 years. He served on the Central States Fair Board of Directors and was elected president in 1996-1997.

Rodney Yost horsemanship clinic and demonstration Rodney Yost is a fourth generation South Dakota rancher who has been involved with the ranching and horse customs his entire life. He's been on horseback since he was a baby in diapers on his family's ranch. He started training ponies at the age of 10 and trained his first horse at the age of 13. Since then, he has become one of the top horse trainers and clinicians in South Dakota and throughout the Midwest. Over the past few years, Yost has instructed many horsemanship clinics and demonstrations for all ages and riding levels. His unique training style and sense of humor has made him a sought after horsemanship clinician throughout the United States and Canada. He is the first and only four-time champion of the Crosswinds Ranch Colt Training Challenge that is held at Michigan State University every spring, and he has won multiple Ranch Horse Colt Futurity competitions. He has become known for creating a relationship with his horses to produce extremely supple, well-mannered, and responsive horses that are capable of many disciplines. Growing up in the heart of cattle-country in South Dakota, Rodney developed a love for the land and livestock at an early age. Over the years, this partnership with the ranching lifestyle has blossomed into a progressive mindset regarding his family-owned and operated Broadaxe Ranch, along with its expansive commercial cattle herd, and American quarter horse breeding and training program. What started out as a necessity of the

For a horseman or horsewoman of any level to have the opportunity of an enjoyable and successful experience while horseback, Rodney believes it is clearly essential to have the correct tools and philosophy to enable all riders the ability to develop a horse that can pull the throttle back to sit, relax, and go slowly at times, while likewise having the ability to step down on the gas pedal when needed in the heat of the action. Free style bull fighting In 1979, at the second annual Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo, an event was born never seen before in rodeo. It was invitational free style bullfight organized by Jim Sutton. Following the bull riding event, each Bull fighter had a set time period to dance, fight and spin his way around a Mexican fighting bull trying to impress the judges and earn the most points to win the contest. The crowd loved it. There was a danger factor and thrill that kept people glued to their seats. And while no one wanted to see a bull fighter hurt, they didn’t mind if they got banged around a little bit. The Wrangler Jeans Corporation loved it too, and starting in 1980, sponsored the Wrangler Bullfight Tour. Sheep day set for the Black Hills Stock Show The 2016 Black Hills Stock Show is going to the sheep on Thursday, Feb. 4. A full day of events will entertain sheep enthusiasts and the general public. Competitions, demonstrations and displays will educate attendees about the sheep industry. All of the events will be held at the James Kjerstad Event Center at the Central States Fairgrounds in Rapid City. Top billing of the day’s excitement is the North American Sheep Dog Trials. The trials are a timed competition requiring a handler to communicate with his or her dog to quickly pen a flock of sheep. This year’s event has dogs and their handlers competing for $5,000 in prize money. The Sheep Dog Trial prelimi-

naries begin at 1 p.m. The National Sheep Shearing Championship will once again find who has the fastest shears in the region. The preliminary rounds are scheduled for 10 a.m. “The sheep industry plays a very important role in the South Dakota agriculture industry,” said Ron Jeffries, Black Hills Stock Show, general manager. “We have structured events for all ages at this year’s sheep day.” Sheep riders ages 3 to 6 years of age will compete in the mutton busting at 7 p.m. Twelve area youth have been accepted to participate in the event with the opportunity to win prizes.

The tour lasted 20 years ending after the 2000 NFR. The 39th annual Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo will be featuring a Free Style Bull Fight. At the PRCA rodeos on Feb. 4-5, four bull fighters will compete for 40-70 seconds each, trying to convince a judge their fight is best. The top two scored bull fighters from each performance will advance to a finals on at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 6. These four will compete and one will be crowned the 2016 Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo Free Style Bull Fight Champion.

World’s Smallest Rodeo showcases fun side of Black Hills Stock Show The World’s Smallest Rodeo heads to the 2016 Black Hills Stock Show on Saturday, Jan. 30. The World’s Smallest Rodeo showcases the stick horse skills of children ages 3-5 years old. The event has a limit of 65 total contestants, so it is important to complete an application early. Applications and rules are available at First Interstate Bank locations throughout the Black Hills. A $5 per contestant entry fee is due with the application. Completed entry forms should be returned to the Black Hills Stock Show office in Room 101 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Entries close Jan. 30 or when the limit is reached. Each contestant will receive a contestant award certificate and an official Black Hills Stock Show Wild Stick Horse. Contestants may compete in up to four events: • Stick horse parade — contestants will be introduced as they parade their stick horse, and prizes will be presented by First Interstate Bank for the best dressed cowboy and best dressed cowgirl. • Pole bending

2016 KBHB bucking horse and bull sale The 31st annual KBHB Bucking Horse Sale will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 5. This sale features 40 head of Sutton Rodeo ranch raised bucking horses including the coming 5-year-old colt crop raised by Sutton Rodeos.
