Family focus Many St. Patrick’s Day traditions are not from Ireland St. Patrick’s Day is made special by various traditions. Everything from dyeing major cities’ rivers green to parades to enjoying green foods has become part of the pageantry of St. Patrick’s Day. The next time you raise a green beer to your lips, you may wonder which traditions are authentically Irish and which ones were created by regions with an abundance of Irish emigrants. Surprisingly, many seemingly Irish traditions likely began elsewhere.

First parade It would be accurate to assume that various elements associated with St. Patrick’s Day began where St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, once resided, including the first St. Patrick’s Day parade. However, some of the first parades held in St. Patrick’s honor took place in two North American cities, New York and Boston, that had high numbers of Irish immigrants. But historians say the first ever St. Patrick’s Day parade was actually held in St. Augustine, Florida in 1601, a year after gunfire blasts were used to honor the saint. The parade may have been at the request of an Irish priest living there at the time.

Six tips for seniors to travel safely Age does not have to restrict one’s ability to travel, and with age comes experience and more opportunities to enjoy travel. Before taking off for parts unknown, men and women over 50 can take steps to ensure their excursions are as safe as they are memorable.

Feast on Irish pub fare this St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day celebrations were different in 2020. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, many communities were forced to cancel their annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Typically lively, jovial gatherings of good-spirited revelers, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are beloved by Irish and non-Irish people alike. Though the COVID-19 vaccines figure to help people across the globe return to a semblance of normalcy at some point in 2021, that long-awaited return to life as the world once knew it is unlikely to occur before mid-March. That means St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in 2021 will likely have to take place at home, much like they did a year ago. With no parade to attend and limited seating at the local Irish pub, would-be Patty’s Day revelers may have to take matters into their own hands this March 17. Cooking up some traditional Irish fare, such as this recipe for “Bacon and Cabbage” from Margaret M. Johnson’s “The Irish Pub Cookbook” (Chronicle Books) is a great way to bring a taste of your favorite Irish pub into your home this St. Patrick’s Day.

Bacon and Cabbage Serves 4 to 6

Ingredients: • 3 pounds Irish boiling bacon • 1 small head cabbage, cored and quartered • Parsley Sauce for serving (see below) • Boiled potatoes for serving

Instructions: 1. Put the bacon in a large saucepan

and cover with cold water. Bring the water slowly to a boil, then cover and reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer, skimming the water occasionally to remove the foam, for 11⁄2 hours (about 30 minutes per pound), or until the meat is tender when pierced with a fork. 2. About 20 minutes before the bacon is cooked, add the cabbage. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender, but not soggy. Transfer the bacon to a serving dish, and let cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Drain the cabbage, reserving 1⁄4 cup of the cooking liquid for the Parsley sauce or 11⁄2 cups for the Whole-Grain Mustard Sauce, and transfer to a serving dish. 3. To serve, slice the meat and serve it with the cabbage, potatoes and sauce.

Parsley Sauce

Ingredients: • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour • ¼ cup bacon cooking liquid • 1¼ cups hot milk • ½ cup minced fresh flat-leaf parsley • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Don’t advertise your absence It may be tempting to upload photos of your beachside vacation to social media as you are immersed in paradise. Unfortunately, seniors tend to be targets for thieves because they are seen as vulnerable. Don’t make the job easier by advertising you are away from home.

Share your itinerary Keep loved ones apprised of your general travel itinerary, especially if you are traveling solo, recommends AARP. Keep a mobile phone on you at all times.

Pack copies of important documents In the event paperwork is lost while traveling, request copies of prescriptions and/or statements of medical conditions from each physician and medical treatment center so you have a second set. Keep copies of your passport, driver’s license, insurance cards, travel tickets, and other documents as well. Seniors have the ability to travel much more than other age groups. Make the experience enjoyable by focusing on safety.

Downsize The RVIA says that RVs are available across a wide range of price points. So if the idea is to trade in a stationary house for an RV, you may be able to do so for as little as $6,000 to as much as $500,000. The RV lifestyle may attract soon-to-be retirees. There are various advantages to getting on board.
