Higher standard deduction, other breaks for older taxpayers WASHINGTON (AP) — You’ve downsized to an apartment, the kids are long gone, and you’re no longer eligible for some of the deductions and exemptions that had helped you lower your tax bill. But for those 65 years or older, there are other tax breaks that might benefit you come tax time. For one, not all your Social Security benefits are subject to federal taxes. How much depends on your other income and filing status. “No one pays federal income tax on more than 85 percent of his or her Social Security benefits based on Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules,” the Social Security Administration says on its website. To determine what percent of your benefits might be taxable, add half your benefits to your other income, including nontaxable interest. If your combined income is between $25,000 and $34,000 and your filing status is single, up to 50 percent of your benefits might be taxable, according to the IRS. For married couples filing jointly, the 50 percent taxable figure applies if your combined

income is between $32,000 and $44,000. Combined income lower than the threshold? Social Security benefits aren’t taxable. If the combined income is above these income ranges, up to 85 percent is subject to income taxes. Be sure to check your state tax laws. In many states, you won’t have to pay state tax on all or some of your Social Security benefits. People 65 and over also should consider whether it’s more beneficial for them to claim the standard deduction or to itemize. The standard deduction is higher for seniors - $7,750 if your filing status is single, $14,800 if you’re married filing jointly and you and your spouse are both at least 65. That compares to $6,200 for single filers under 65 and $12,400 for married taxpayers under 65 who are filing jointly. “Seniors very often have already paid up their mortgage and they very often don’t itemize anymore,” said Jackie Perlman, principal tax research analyst at the Tax Institute at H&R Block. But it’s important to do the math or let your tax preparer or tax software do it for you - to see whether it

still makes sense to itemize even with the higher standard deduction. Even if you don’t have mortgage interest to deduct, you can still deduct any property taxes you paid. State income taxes also are deductible, or alternatively, you can choose to deduct state sales taxes, an attractive option if you live in a state that doesn’t have an income tax. For seniors, medical expenses have to exceed 7.5 percent of adjusted gross income to be deductible. That threshold applies even if only one spouse has reached 65 and you file jointly. For those under 65, medical expenses are deductible only if they exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income. And medical bills can be hefty for seniors. Covered medical expenses include the portion of doctor, dentist and hospital bills and the cost of prescription drugs not covered by insurance, as well as premiums for Medicare or other insurance coverage. Prescription eyeglasses are deductible, as are the cost of false teeth, hearing aids and wheelchairs. So is the cost of transportation to medical appointments. However, seniors who are at least 70½ had another option for charitable donations. At that age, you’re required to take a minimum distribution for your individual retirement accounts. If you rolled that distribution over directly to a charity - instead of taking the money and then donating it - the distribution is not counted as income and therefore is not taxable. “The difference is you’re lowering not only your taxable income but also your adjusted gross income,” Perlman said. And that can affect such things as whether Social Security benefits are taxable and whether you can deduct your medical expenses. But there’s no double-dipping. If you itemize, you can’t also deduct a charitable donation that was made through a direct rollover from an IRA. There is also a small tax credit for low-income seniors, which Perlman says is not widely used. “It might be helpful for someone who neither contributed to the Social Security system nor ever married.” The IRS offers free tax help for people 60 and older, working through non-profit groups like AARP Foundation.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rejected. A notice from the Internal Revenue Service saying your return won’t be accepted might be your first clue that your identity has been stolen. “The IRS recognizes the first return submitted under a Social Security number, and usually the identity theft is identified when the second return is filed” under that same number, said Mark Luscombe, principal federal tax analyst for Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting, US. Another clue might be an IRS notice saying you have unreported income. That could happen if someone steals your Social Security number and gives it to an employer to avoid being taxed on earned wages. You get the tax bill instead. Identity theft could lead to long delays in getting your refund or bigger tax bills for unreported income. “Tax refund fraud associated with identity theft (IDT) continues to be an evolving threat, one that imposes a serious financial and emotional toll

on honest taxpayers and threatens the integrity of the tax administration system,” the Government Accountability Office said in a report in August. More than 236,000 tax returns processed last year were deemed fraudulent because of identity theft, and nearly $1.2 billion in refunds from those fraudulent returns were blocked, according to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. The number of identity-theft returns is down significantly from 2012, and the IG said in a report last fall that new filters the IRS put in place to identify the crime may be responsible. “The IRS is investing in that area,” said Bob Meighan, vice president of consumer advocacy for TurboTax. “People have to have confidence that the returns that they file are protected and secure,” he said. The IRS is providing identity-theft victims with a personal identification number to prove who they are when filing tax returns. In 2014, more than 1.2 million of these identity-protection PINs were issued by the agency, up from 770,000 the previous year.

The agency also has more than doubled the number of workers assigned to identity-theft cases since 2011, to about 3,000 in 2014, according to the GAO. Beginning this year, the number of refunds direct-deposited to a single account is limited to three, another attempt to reduce identity theft. “The fourth and subsequent refunds automatically will convert to a paper refund check and be mailed to the taxpayer,” the IRS said. National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson wants the agency to do more. She has called identity theft “an invasive crime that can have a traumatic emotional impact.” She said early last year that she has called on the IRS to designate a single point of contact, someone who can provide “sensitive, holistic assistance” to an identity-theft victim. Kathy Pickering, executive director of the Tax Institute at H&R Block, says prevention is the best defense. Don’t give out your Social Security number or your date of birth, she says. The IRS also advises people to

protect their personal computers and Internet accounts, check their credit reports and avoid giving out personal information over the phone, especially if you didn’t initiate the call. And beware of phishing attempts - online or over the phone - that seek access to your personal information. “The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information,” the agency said. “This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels.” If you get a notice from the IRS that leads you to believe you are an identity-theft victim, the IRS says you should respond immediately. The first step, the agency says, is to complete an Identity Theft Affadavit, Form 14039. It’s available at www. irs.gov, and should be filled out and mailed or faxed according to the instructions provided. If the issue remains unresolved, taxpayers should contact the Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 1-800-908-4490.

How to ease your dental anxiety Few people relish the idea of going to the dentist. Dentists prod and poke sensitive areas of the mouth, but their efforts are for the benefit of their patients. Fear of the dentist's chair is not uncommon, and that anxiety prevents millions of people from seeking proper preventative dental care. The consequences of succumbing to those fears extend beyond pain or lost teeth. Diseases of the mouth have been linked to other ailments, including diabetes, stroke and heart disease. A fear of the dentist may stem from past unpleasant experiences, such as a dentist with a poor chair-side manner, while others may fear the lack of control they experience while in a dentist's chair. According to Ellen Rodino, PhD, who has studied dental fear, lying down with a dentist hovering above you can be off-putting. Couple that with the discomfort many people have when instruments that interfere with their ability to communicate are placed in their mouths, and fear of the dental chair does not seem so unreasonable. Easing fears at the dental office involves communication with the dentist and his or her staff, as well as finding a

dentist with whom you feel comfortable. Working through your fears of the dentist is an important step toward getting the oral health care you need. GAGGING According to the American Dental Association, authors of the study, "Gagging and Its Associations With Dental Care-Related Fear, Fear of Pain and Beliefs About Treatment" found patients who have a higher frequency of gagging problems during a dental visit are more likely to experience higher levels of dental care-related fear and fear of pain. They also may have more negative beliefs about dental professionals and dental treatment. Patients should discuss their propensity for gagging with the dentist or hygienist in advance. Some dentists can recommend nose breathing and other relaxation techniques. Distractions, such as televisions in the examination room, also can help to relieve anxiety and the likelihood that you may gag while in the dentist's chair. Dentist also may opt for smaller cleaning instruments or take other measures to reduce the liklihood of stimulating a gagging reflex.

SOUNDS The sounds of cleaning tools and drills elicit fear in many people. But ignoring or avoiding such sounds can help men and women conquer their fears of the dentist's chair. On your next dental visit, bring a pair of headphones and some favorite music to listen to while you're in the chair. PAIN Some dentists cause unnecessary fear in patients because they assume every person in the chair has the same pain threshold. One person may be able to tolerate a tooth extraction without numbing, while another may need pain relief for a routine cleaning. Fearful patients should make their needs and fears known. Speak to your dentist about what can be done to deal with the pain. Discuss the procedure and find out if novocaine or another pain reliever can be used. Although use of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, has diminished in dental practices, a dentist may offer medication to relieve anxiety or even sedate patients who are especially nervous. Pain may be more tolerable if you ask the dentist to take frequent breaks or use a numbing agent on your gums.

Dentists may prescribe a sensitivity-relieving toothpaste prior to certain dental procedures if your teeth are sensitive to hot and cold. RUSHING Patients can help themselves relieve anxiety by choosing appointment times that are convenient and at times when they're less likely to be rushed. An early-morning appointment or a weekend appointment may have patients in and out faster, which cuts down on anxiety-inducing wait time. CHOICE OF PROVIDER Your choice of dentist may come down to who is in your health insurance network. Those with more flexible insurance plans may have more freedom when choosing a dentist. In either case, people should interview dentists and get recommendations from others to find a provider that will keep comfort and care in mind. Especially fearful individuals may need to use a dentist who specializes in sedation dentistry to make their visits more tolerable. Avoiding the dentist because of perceived pain or other fears is unnecessary.

How to make flossing easier for kids It is well known that a combination of brushing, flossing and periodic dental checkups are essential to oral health. Some parents teach their children to brush thoroughly early on, even taking them for dental visits at young ages so youngsters can become acclimated to the dentist's office. But flossing is one component of oral hygiene that may be overlooked because many kids simply don't enjoy it. Flossing is one of those tasks that people understand they must do regularly, but many still do not. According to Humana Dental, flossing cleans bacteria and trapped food from between the teeth. Brushing only reaches the surface of the teeth, but floss is required to get into the small crevices to prevent bacteria from turning into plaque buildup. The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once per day. It is far better to floss once a day and do a thorough job rather than several times a day and miss areas of the mouth by doing it quickly. Children should be urged to floss regularly in addition to brush-

ing. However, flossing can be cumbersome for youngsters who have yet to develop the dexterity needed to manipulate dental floss. There are many products available and techniques that can be used to assist children with cleaning between their teeth. The following are some flossing tips for kids. • Begin the introduction to floss early. The younger children are introduced to floss, the more likely they are to embrace flossing as part of their oral hygiene routine. • Show visual proof of the benefits of flossing. Oftentimes, children are more likely to respond to something they can see. Show pictures of dental decay and what occurs when proper oral hygiene is not followed. This may help make the concept of flossing more attractive. • Get the proper tools. Kids cannot floss unless they have floss products on hand. There are various age-appropriate flossers and types of dental floss available. Children may not be able to use dental floss properly because of a lack of dexterity. However, floss picks

are much easier to hold and work between the teeth, particularly for kids with small hands. Floss should always be on hand, whether at home or when you go on vacation. • Let kids choose. Take kids down the dental aisle at the store and let them pick and choose which products they want to use. They may be more excited to brush and floss if they're using something they picked out themselves. • Lead by example. Children will be more likely to floss if they see their parents flossing. That means adults should floss regularly and let their children watch and learn.

Flossing is a necessary component of good oral hygiene. Everyone should floss, no matter their age, and children should begin flossing as soon as their mouth starts to fill out with pearly whites.

BENEFITS OF FLOSSING Removing bacteria and trapped food from teeth has a number of benefits. Bacteria can cause bad breath, but flossing and brushing helps to keep breath smelling fresh. Dirty teeth can lead to dental carries. Children may be more inclined to floss if they know they'll be preventing cavities and avoiding potentially painful trips to the dentist. Plaque trapped between the teeth and along the gum line that leads to periodontal disease puts a person at a greater risk for heart disease. There are some studies that show bacteria from the mouth can end up in the bloodstream.

Sugar plays a role in the process because the bacteria use sugar as a food source. The sugar also helps them stick to the tooth surface, making it more difficult for bacteria to be cleared away with saliva. As bacteria eat the sugar, they produce waste, which is acidic. Over time, this acid can wear away at the tough enamel on

teeth, making it porous. These holes can become bigger, eventually forming what is known as a cavity. It may take a while before you realize you have a cavity because the enamel of the tooth doesn't have nerve fibers. But once the cavity becomes large enough to expose the sensitive dentin within, pain ensues.

Pets of the Week Miah

Miah is a Lab mix. She is about 1.5 years old. She is currently not spayed, but will be shortly. She is a very sweet but high energy. She would love a home with a lot of room to run and she gets along with other dogs.

Otter

Otter is serving his second stint with us. He was adopted into a loving home, but Otter has some vision problems and was often spooked by the young child in the home, and they did not feel that was fair to him. He can see well during the day and loves to play ball, but when it gets dark he has a hard time deciphering objects.

Henriette

Henriette is a cuddler. She likes to play and is super friendly. She lived in the kitten room with 6 kittens. They got along and played well together. Everyone in Henriette’s kitten room has now been adopted. She has been moved to a kennel and is still looking for a loving home.

Whitaker

Whitaker was brought in by his owner because she was no longer able to care for him. He is a very sweet, orange and white tabby. He is 6 years old and neutered.
