Pets of the Week Bear Claw

A very sweet boy. He loves to be around people and is always seeking attention. He is on a special diet that he will have to stay on for the rest of his life. As long as he eats only this food he is perfectly fine. Come and meet Bear to see just how lovable he really is.

Cinnamon

A sweet old lady. She loves to be held and cuddled. She can only eat canned food due to her missing her teeth. She would love a nice calm home to live out her days and a nice window to look out. Help us find this sweet girl a loving furever home!

Bubba

A sweet old man. He does well with children, but would love to be the only pet in a nice calm home to live out his days. He is in pretty decent shape for his age. He loves to lay around outside in the sun and watch the world go by.

Mera

A sweet, very active girl. Her true breed in called a Hanging Tree Cattle Dog. She loves to run and play with her toys. She will need a very active home, due to her breeding. She is very sweet and very smart.

Make a difference for life. Adopt a shelter pet today! All Pets are spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter. Lost pets and strays fill the shelter, can you help with time or donations? Some have to choose between food for family or food for pets. To discourage animal abandonment, a Pet Food Pantry is available at the shelter for those who need it. Won’t you help us stock the Pet Food Pantry? Just drop off food at WHHS. Immunize, spay/neuter, shelter from the cold, and LOVE your pets!

reen is having a moment this holiday season, not just as a color, but as a decor item.

Green garlands are cascading down staircases, crowning doorways and slipping over mantles. Wreaths grace doors and windows and, of course, there’s trees galore. But where does all that come from? Here’s how you find and keep real bundles of holly, fir and other holiday greens.

as they dry. Also consider fresh rosemary, which also comes with a wonderful smell, bay leaves, eucalyptus, cypress and ivy. Rosemary, especially, makes an attractive tree shape that makes a lovely table decoration.

Keep it fresh

Home expert Martha Stewart advises to keep your greens fresh by spraying them with an antidesiccant spray, found at garden centers. These help keep your greens fresh by sealing in moisture in dry winter environments. Mist loose greenery daily and it will last about two weeks. The misting, by the way, also helps boost that perfect evergreen Christmas smell. Lowe’s suggests trimming the ends of

Garden centers

Go forth to your local garden center. They’ll have a wide selection of real garlands, wreaths, trees and more. If you’re just looking to fill a few vases, ask the staff there if you can take some of the trimmings off their hands. Want to go beyond your basic fir and juniper? Look for giant, glossy magnolia leaves that develop a beautiful golden patina

Choose greenery that doesn’t feel dry, isn’t brown and, if it’s evergreen, has all or most of

Shop small businesses to improve the holiday experience

t’s the time of year when newspapers thicken with sales circulars and holiday advertisements. Consumers looking to beat the hustle and bustle and steer clear of the crowds this year may want to pay attention to local businesses in lieu of trekking to nearby shopping malls.

Every time consumers visit local coffee shops to grab a latte, pick up a dress at a nearby boutique or patronize a farmer’s market down the street, they are supporting a small business. The Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving are some of the busiest shopping days of the season, and they also can be some of the friendliest to small businesses. Plaid Friday was conceptualized in Oakland. It may have been born in the Golden State, but the movement soon spread across the country. Plaid Friday is an alternative to big box stores’ Black Friday bonanzas. It is designed to promote both local and independently-owned businesses during the holiday season. The name Plaid Friday was

used to help people visualize the various threads of small businesses coming together to create a strong community fabric that was diverse and creativity. Shoppers can continue their small business patronage with Small Business Saturday. This, too, is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The first event was created by American Express in conjunction with the nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation. Since its inception, many small business groups, merchants and politicians have touted the event and the Shop Small® mantra. The idea is that when small businesses thrive, communities and individuals thrive along with them.

Now celebrating

43 years! Artist Supplies • Beading • Diamond Art • Scrapbooking • Fabric • Craft Supplies

The Small Business Administration says that, since 1995, small businesses have generated 66 percent of all new jobs in the United States. There are a number of big reasons to shop small. One can start around the holidays and then continue all year long. • Shopping small businesses helps give back to the community directly. According to Civic Economics, a strategic planning business, on average 48 percent of each purchase made at independent businesses is recirculated locally through tax money and other support. • Small business owners often strive to provide personalized, hands-on customer service. Repeat

business is key to their survival, so they want to ensure shoppers are happy. • Small businesses, since they are not beholden to corporate oversight in terms of what they sell, have greater flexibility. That allows them to offer a diverse product selection. • Small business owners often live nearby, and they’re the people you see in town, schools and elsewhere in the local community. Many consumers are comforted to know they’re supporting their neighbors, especially during the holiday season. Supporting local businesses is easy. And shoppers who like what they see can share the good news with others on social media.

Picking the perfect strand

othing gets the Christmas spirit flowing like stringing up the lights outside.

Keep reading to find out how to make those lights safe, keep yourself safe (hint: just stay off the roof), and still have a spectacular holiday display.

Indoor versus outdoor

Here’s what it boils down to: you can put outdoor lights inside, but never put inside lights out, bobvila. Com says. If you don’t want to spend time separating lights, choose a strand that can be either/or.

Led versus incandescent

Led lights are more popular nowadays, but they use about 10% the amount of energy than similar incandescent lights. They also burn cool, so they won’t toast your fingers, and can have plastic shells that are less prone to flaking and shattering. However, incandescent bulbs have a warm glow that has a vintage look that leds can’t mimic.

®Adobe Stock

And they’re less expensive to purchase than similar led strands.

What do all those letters and numbers mean?

Bobvila.Com breaks it down. • C6 bulbs are strawberry shaped and good for indoor trees. They are 1 1/8 inch long. • C7 bulbs are a little rounder and longer and look great on larger trees and outdoors. They are 1 1/2 inch long. • C9 are teardrop shaped and are perfect outdoors. They’re a whopping 2 1/2 inches long. • G12 bulbs are round with an etched design. They are 1 1/2 inch in diameter. Still confused? Go to your local home center. They usually have a display that shows each bulb.

How many to get

Yeah, those 100-foot-long strands

may look appealing, but remember that the longer the strand, the harder it is to wind up and put away neatly. For trees, aim to string up to 100 lights per foot of tree height. When estimating footage, like to go

Local vs. Online

T

he convenience of online shopping entices many buyers into avoiding the crowds in their local businesses. However, buying in-person comes with many advantages, both for consumers and their community’s economy.

Learn how keeping your dollars in town can have a positive effect this holiday season. One negative aspect you many forget about online shopping is its direct impact on the environment. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates transportation of goods burns 1.1 billion gallons of fuel and creates one-billion metric tons of CO2, annually.

Benefit your community

When you shop at locally owned businesses, more of your money stays in town and benefits the rest of the community. According to the organization, independent we stand, for every $100 spent at a local shop, $68 stay in community. Local business owners are inspired to give back to the neighbors who keep their doors open. Many shops purchase their products from other nearby sources and contribute to charitable causes to benefit their community.

Know what you’re getting

Sure, one- or two-day shipping is a great option for last-minute

Week 4, Page 11B shoppers, but what happens when the product is shipped incorrectly or damaged? Claiming a defective item or reaching out for a refund can be time-consuming, especially during the busy holiday season that e-commerce retailers experience. Shopping local can actually save you time and eliminate the risk of having to explain to a loved one that their item is in the reshipment process during a gift exchange. The best way to know exactly what you are buying is to inspect it in person. Make sure to analyze the product for damage before you leave the businesses’ doors so you can exchange it for another item during the same visit.

In-store promotions

Brick-and-mortar stores are no strangers to the competitiveness they face from online retailers. Check your local businesses for instore only promotions to find great savings this holiday season. One way to discover limited-time offers is by signing up for a company’s newsletters or asking them about deals in person.

Safety when gifting toys

F

ew people garner as much delight from opening holiday gifts as young children. The holiday season is a wonder to behold, culminating with brightly wrapped presents just waiting to be revealed.

For parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends, nothing is more memorable than watching the pure joy on a child’s face when he or she opens a holiday gift. As a result, wellmeaning gift-givers sometimes forget to consider safety when seeking out toys and games for kids. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says there were more than 250,000 toy-related injuries treated in American hospital emergency departments in 2017. Most of these injuries were attributed to nonmotorized scooters, toy balls and toy vehicles. However, any toy that is not age-appropriate has the potential to cause harm. That is why the organization Prevent Blindness America, which spearheaded the campaign to make December Safe Toys and Gifts Month, advises caution when gifting youngsters.

The following are some guidelines when gifting young kids, courtesy of PBA, the CPSC and Kids Health® by Nemours. • Always read labels to see if the toy is right for a child’s age. Don’t buy a toy that is too mature for a child even if you think it would be a big hit. • Consider a gift recipient’s temperament and behavior before purchasing a toy. While one child may be mature enough to handle a toy, another of the same age may not be ready for it. • Recognize choking hazards in toys, which may include marbles, small balls and uninflated balloons. Button batteries, which come in many electronics, can be a choking hazard and cause damage to intestines if swallowed. • Toys with strings and straps can strangle young children and should

be avoided. • Inspect all toys for sharp edges or points. Even stuffed animals with internal wires can stab, cut or shock. • Avoid toys that have parts that fly off, as they can injure the eyes or other parts of the body. • Look for nontoxic labels on toys, including crayons, markers and other art supplies. • Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame-resistant or flameretardant. • Painted toys must use lead-free paint. • Look for the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) label, which signifies that the toy has passed the group’s safety inspection standards. • Monitor toy usage during play, and frequently examine toys to see if wear and tear has made them into hazards.

The holiday season is an exciting time for children eager to play with new toys and games. Ensuring those gifts are safe can make for a healthy giving season.

Did you know? Children with special needs often benefit from gifts with specialized purposes. While general gifts certainly can be fitting, customizing the gifts to the recipient’s particular emotional or behavioral needs can be a great way to ensure kids get the most use out of their toys. To get help with making selections, gift-givers may want to visit Miniland

Educational USA (www. minilandeducationalusa.com/ able-play/), which offers a variety of ideas, comprehensive information on toys/products and its own rating system, known as AblePlay™, for special needs individuals. In addition, the company offers solutions for smart growth, care, fun activities, and learning opportunities for all children.

Shop frugally

T

he holiday season is a joyous but often expensive time of year.

The average American will spend $700 on holiday gifts and other trimmings this year, totaling more than $465 billion says the National Retail Federation. In a 2017 survey for CIBC, Canadians said they were planning to spend an average $643 on gifts and another $300 on decor and entertaining. Such spending can compromise household budgets, making the post-holiday hangover that much more difficult. Holiday shoppers may want to emphasize being frugal this holiday season. Here are some strategies to follow.

Establish a firm limit on gifts

The more the merrier is a popular a sentiment during the

holiday season, but spending more on a gift doesn’t necessarily mean it will be better received. Many humorous, whimsical, practical, or even glamourous gifts can be had for $30 or less.

Combine financial resources

If there’s a splurge in mind for a particular person on a list, find out if someone else is willing to serve as a co-gifter. For example, siblings can chip in for a gift for Mom or Dad if they have their sights set on something expensive.

Consider a grab bag or secret gift exchange

Families or groups of friends can opt for a grab bag this year. In such arrangements, each person brings a gift worth no more than a previously agreed on amount of money, and individuals take turns pulling gifts out of the bag. This is a great way to stay within budget and is a particularly helpful arrangement for big families.

Shop all sales

Utilize sales to your best

advantage to score deals on various items. Those who plan ahead can shop off-season to help stretch a budget over the course of the year rather than over one or two months.

Include some homemade gifts

People with a talent for knitting or crocheting can create blankets

or other gifts. Bakers can whip up tasty, edible treats. The holidays are a prime time to put your unique talents to use and turn them into beloved gifts. The holidays certainly can be expensive, but people can rein in spending by acting frugally when gifting.

Holiday Shopping Tips

hopping can be timeconsuming come the holiday season. According to a Consumer Reports Holiday Shopping Poll, during the holiday season, the average American spends roughly 42 hours buying, wrapping and returning gifts.

Holiday shopping can be both physically and mentally tiring. But there’s no reason why holiday shopping excursions cannot be comfortable.

Keep weather in mind

The weather can affect where shoppers do their shopping. Select indoor malls or outlets and other retailers with overhead coverage to protect against the elements.

Choose easy-flow stores

Consider shopping small

Stores that are easy to navigate and offer ample room for multiple people to shop simultaneously can feel more comfortable, even during the busy holiday season.

Many small business owners go out of their way to provide a comfortable shopping experience, establishing rapport and solving problems for customers.

Wear comfortable clothing

Take breaks along the way

The rise in luxury loungewear means shoppers can be comfortable and look good at the same time. Choose footwear that will not rub and cause blisters while offering ample arch support to prevent tired feet.

Arrive well-fed

It’s difficult to make shopping decisions on an empty stomach. Heading to stores satiated can improve productivity and help avoid fatigue or impulse food stops.

Recharge by resting from the shopping experience. Take a break by sitting down or periodically engage in activities that do not involve shopping or thinking about the holidays.

Shop unencumbered

Leave unnecessary items at home so as not to be burdened down by coats, bags and other accessories. Utilize lockers at malls or coat checks. Skip bulky purses in lieu of small, easily toted options.

Cold-weather workout tips

W

orkouts are a part of many people’s daily routines. Some look forward to their exercise sessions, while others only commit after finding ways to make them as enjoyable as possible.

For people who don’t enjoy working out indoors, finding ways to exercise in the great outdoors can provide the incentives necessary to commit to daily workouts. Exercising outdoors is a great way to get some fresh air, but what about those days when the weather isn’t so inviting? Lengthy periods of cold or inclement weather, which is common in fall and winter in many parts of the world, can interrupt daily routines and derail one’s fitness goals. However, there are ways

to overcome inclement weather so outdoor workouts can be enjoyed yearround.

Warm up for longer

Muscles typically require more time to warm up in cold weather than they do in warm weather. The Canadian Chiropractic AssociationTM notes that many people feel as though there muscles are noticeably stiffer in cold weather than in warm weather.

This can make people who exercise in such weather more vulnerable to musculoskeletal injuries. One way to reduce that risk is to warm up for longer periods of time than you might in warm weather. For example, runners might want to walk slowly outdoors for several minutes before they begin jogging. Doing so can loosen and warm up muscles that are naturally stiff in cold weather.

core, as the outdoor recreation retailer The North Face® notes that blood pulls toward the chest and abdominal area, making this the warmest part of your body. Focus on keeping the extremities, including fingers, toes and nose, warm with materials like gloves and tall socks. Face masks can be helpful to cover the nose and neck, but make sure they’re made from breathable materials that won’t hold moisture.

Dress appropriately

Reconsider your footwear to improve balance

The gear outdoor exercise enthusiasts wear can go a long way toward making cold weather workouts more enjoyable and safe. Layering clothing during cold weather workouts allows people to maintain steady body temperatures throughout a workout by removing layers as they heat up if they need to. Even though it’s cold, your body will still sweat, so look for a wicking material that draws moisture away from your body. This is especially important for your

Frozen ground is not as easy to traverse as unfrozen ground, so look for footwear that provides added traction. Winter running shoes that come with studded soles might be necessary. Trekking poles also can help hikers gain traction on frozen or snow-covered trails. Outdoor workouts don’t have to end when the weather gets cold. A few simple tricks can help people exercise outdoors throughout the year.
