Snow should not be shoveled or blown into the street after the street has been cleaned. DISTRICT 31 CANDIDATE FORUM Sponsored by BHSU at the Campus Student Union October 10, 2018 • 6 p.m.
Moderator, Hannah Neumiller, opened the meeting with a welcome. Roughly 40 people attended. There was no Pledge of Allegiance. The participants introduced themselves and explained their reasons for running for the South Dakota State Legislature. A Political Science class at BHSU had prepared the questions, which were presented by the moderator. Dr. Pamela Carriveau served as timer. The Democrat challengers spoke of needing more money for K-12 teachers, help with repayment of student loans, improved faculty salaries, need for a broader healthcare program, shortage of affordable housing, and the lack of jobs available in South Dakota. These were the things, if elected, that they would work to improve. The Republicans agreed that similar items were on their wish list, but State Law dictates that the Legislature balances the South Dakota Budget annually. While it would be nice to give more, they simply cannot spend what South Dakota does not have. They are hopeful that the recently passed Internet Sales Tax will bring in additional revenue but there is no precedent to indicate what that amount might be. Later, the audience was invited to ask questions. One such question involved the Keystone XL Pipeline, and if it would benefit South Dakota. Republicans were unanimous in their support of the XL as being a benefit to South Dakota. Democrats varied from a resounding NO to concerns about protecting the environment with stronger regulations. One Democrat solution to the funding shortage in South Dakota was to impose a 1% Corporate Income Tax on corporations in South Dakota. South Dakota is one of the few states that have no personal or corporate State Income Tax. This would end the incentive for corporations to relocate their businesses to tax-free South Dakota. The corporations that South Dakota has gained have made us a more vibrant state with a thriving business climate. South Dakota is Number 1 in the nation for entrepreneurs! Our Republican Platform begins with The Preamble which includes, “The Party supports the preservation of our Republic, its ideals, and its institutions for the good of all Americans... We recognize the free enterprise system and the work ethic of our people as the foundation of our economic success and security. The proper role of government is to provide for the people those critical functions that cannot be properly performed by individuals or private organizations. The most effective and responsible government is government closest to the people... We believe South Dakota is an exceptional place to live, raise a family, and pursue economic opportunity.” The Lawrence County Republicans feel that this Forum was well staged and were grateful for the opportunity to hear the candidates who will all be on the ballot on November 6th, 2018.
