Safety measures for winter drivers
Winter weather causes many people to retreat indoors until the spring thaw. However, for those who embrace the cooler temperatures or find that life must go on despite snow and ice, taking inventory of their vehicles is a must before the first snowflakes start to fall. Tire care is an especially important area of vehicle maintenance. The tire experts at Michelin say that regular tires may be ineffective for winter driving. Summer tires are made from materials that are optimized for warm conditions. When the mercury drops, these same materials can harden, reducing their ability to grip the road. That lack of traction can be compounded by the presence of snow or ice. Even all-season tires, which are designed to be driven year-round, can be insufficient in severe weather conditions. Winter tires can help drivers safely navigate winter roadways. Bridgestone Tires says that having the right snow tires matters when driving in winter weather conditions. It’s important to look for tires that can disperse water sufficiently and also grip the road. Snow tires are designed to remain softer and more flexible to conform to the road better in cold conditions. Some winter tires are even studded to provide better traction. Unfortunately, even the best winter tires cannot provide perfect traction on slippery roadways. That is why it
is essential — in conjunction with the use of winter tires or snow chains — to modify driving techniques to navigate safely. • Drive slowly. Slow down on winter roads. Allow a greater distance for stopping than for dry conditions. Slippery conditions can make it more challenging to stop, and excessive speeds can make the situation worse. • Shift into low gear. On hills, rely on low gears to maximize traction to travel up and down hills. This can minimize skids or sliding. • Get the vehicle a tuneup. In addition to tires, be sure the braking system, battery and other major components of the vehicle are in good working order. • Replace windshield wipers. Reduced visibility can compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. Replace windshield wiper blades before winter arrives. Consider purchasing winterrated windshield blades. • Know how to recover from a skid. When skids occur on black ice or slush, drivers should take their feet off of the pedals and steer gently in the direction they want to go. As the vehicle regains traction, only then should the brakes or accelerator be applied. Winter weather requires making some vehicle modifications, and drivers may want to alter the way they drive to be more safe on the road.

After driving through the rough conditions of summer road-construction projects, it’s likely your vehicle is in need of an alignment. Hitting potholes, curbs and normal wear from your car’s steering components can cause your wheels to point the wrong way. While fall is the perfect time to perform an alignment due to the many road hazards created during warmer temperatures, don’t forget to add it to your regular maintenance schedule all year. How to Know It’s Time It’s not easy to see that your car needs an alignment. Sometimes the wheels will only be off by a hundredth of a degree. However, the way your car handles will provide the telltale signs while you’re in the driver’s seat. Pay attention for these symptoms while traveling. • When you let go of the steering wheel, the vehicle may pull to one side. • While driving down a straight and flat road, your steering wheel can be unbalanced. Once your vehicle is connected to an alignment machine, special sensors and cameras work to show the exact degree where a component must be adjusted. Especially when traveling at high speeds, steering can be extremely difficult, affecting your reaction time to hazards. It also takes an enormous toll on your tires. When driving with proper alignment and regular tire rotations, you will get more out of your car’s shoes and expensive-suspension components.

Create a vehicle preparedness kit Breaking down while driving can be unnerving, potentially delaying trips and stranding motorists and their passengers for lengthy periods of time. However, for those with well-equipped emergency preparedness kits in their vehicles’ trunks, breakdowns can be much easier to manage. Even though new vehicles are loaded with advanced technology, drivers are no less likely to avoid breakdowns. In fact, roadside calls for stranded vehicles are on the rise. A study by the American Automobile Association found that, in 2015, 32 million drivers required the organization’s services, with issues regarding vehicle batteries, flat tires and vehicle keys reaching all-time highs. Despite early warning systems, more than half a million drivers in the United States ran out of gas last year, necessitating service calls. An emergency vehicle kit is something that no driver should leave home without. Just because a car appears to be in good shape or is well-maintained doesn’t mean something can’t happen. Here’s what to stock in an emergency preparedness kit for a vehicle. • Sustenance: It’s impossible to determine how long you may be stranded if your vehicle breaks down. Therefore, keep some high-calorie energy or protein bars, or other portable foods with a long shelf lives, in your vehicle at all times. • Water: Popular Mechanics says a person
needs roughly a gallon per day to stay hydrated. If that’s too much to pack, bring empty water bottles and purification tablets. Otherwise, stock up on bottled water. • Weather supplies: You never know which way the weather will turn. Check Your Washer Fluid System It’s easy to take your vehicle’s washer fluid system for granted. You probably don’t think of it with the same importance as engine oil or transmission fluid. While it isn’t crucial for your car to run properly, using the correct type of washer fluid during the cold season can help keep you safe.
Different Types Like many other automotive fluids, you have several options when it comes to choosing the washer fluid which works best for you. Here are a few different types and when they are most beneficial. • Cold weather: If you experience frigid temperatures during the autumn, consider switching to a mixture that is resistant to freezing. Most bottles will advertise their freeze threshold clearly on the bottle. • De-icing: Another popular colder weather type of fluid is mixed with deicing properties. Not only is it resistant to freezing, it will help clear icy windshields while you sit comfortably in the warm car. • Bug cleaning: More popular in warmer climates, this solution applies a chemical to clear bug residue collected on your windshield.
How the System Works Understanding how a washer fluid system works is easy. Once you know its process, you will know how to diagnose problems when they occur. The windshield washer is activated by a switch in your car, near the steering column in most vehicles. Once it is engaged, a pump goes to work to push washer fluid from your reservoir into a series of tubes that are connected to nozzles located on the front or back of your window. What Goes Wrong If nothing happens when you activate your switch, there are a few things that can be blamed. The first thing you should do is ensure your reservoir has enough fluid. If that’s the case, it’s likely that pump has failed, or a hose has collapsed. Safety Washer fluid is largely made up of methanol; without it, regular water would freeze in the reservoir. It’s important to keep your extra bottles away from children as its bright color can easily be mistaken for a sweet drink. When maintaining your vehicle’s system, be careful to avoid contact and clean any spill, because it’s harmful to pets, too. According to the National Capital Poison Control, the methanol in washer fluid can cause kidney failure, blindness and even death if swallowed.

Dental Crowns
Many people visit their dentists and learn they have a tooth that requires a crown. In many instances, dental crowns are necessary for proper tooth care. Crowns were once widely referred to as “caps.” A crown is a permanent cover for a tooth that would otherwise require a very large filling after dental decay has been removed. Crowns also may be used to repair cracked or broken teeth so that extraction is not necessary. Sometimes crowns are used for cosmetic modifications or to hold a dental bridge in place. The crown itself can be made from different materials, like stainless steel, gold or metallic alloy, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, and resin. A dentist will determine which material will work best depending on the application and tooth location.
Understanding your appointment(s)
Crowns are typically installed in two appointments. The first appointment requires prep work so the tooth can hold the crown. This is typically a painless procedure, and one in which the dentist will anesthetize the tooth
and gum tissue and then file down the tooth along the chewing surface and sides to make room for the crown covering. If the tooth was decayed or insubstantial, the dentist may have to “build up” the tooth instead of filing it down. Again, these determinations are made by the dentist who has the expertise to gauge how much workable tooth is left. Once the tooth has been prepared, an impression will be made of the bite area. That’s because the permanent crown will be fabricated in a laboratory and the fit/color will need to be exact for comfort — and also to ensure that bacteria and food debris do not get caught between the crown and tooth. The final component is a temporary cap that will keep the prepared tooth clean. This is molded in the office and will be worn only until the custom-made crown is ready. When the permanent crown is delivered, the patient will return to the office to have it checked for fit and then cemented into place.

A partial crown may be used if only a portion of the tooth needs to be covered. Dentists will often rely on full crowns to get maximum coverage and strength.
