WELCOME

Dear Friends,

The summer weather arrived around Passover this year, but now it really is summer. This season, we’re offering more special programs than usual to give everyone a chance to come inside and escape from the hot weather. The offerings are quite varied, and we’ve got something for everyone!

Read a great book lately? Looking for the perfect summer read? Check out The J’s Little Library located in our lobby. Lovingly and skillfully constructed for us by a member, Ted Coonfield, it’s a place for kids and adults to drop off gently used books and to find their next read. The library works best when more people participate so check it out the next time you’re on campus! See page 6.

Summer means camp, and we still have limited space available in some of our MJCC Summer Day Camp sessions. Give the gift of camp to a child so they can engage in days filled with swimming, recreation, arts and crafts, Jewish culture, games, field trips, and more. Sign up for a week, a month, or the entire summer! See page 16.

Our popular monthly Family Shabbat Dinners continue right through the summer on June 20, July 18, and August 15. Join us to welcome and celebrate Shabbat as a community. A kosher dinner is provided for only $5 per person (or $15 maximum per family), thanks to a grant from generous donors, and the event includes songs, stories, kids activities, and a great chance to meet and socialize with friends, new and old. Advance registration is required, and be sure to register early, as this event always sells out. See page 6.

June is Pride Month at the J! Join us for a fun-filled kick-off when we present Poison Waters and Friends for an evening of Drag Queen Bingo on Monday, June 9 at 5:30 pm in the Stern Family Ballroom. See pages 5-6.

In June, we’ll also be launching a new lecture and performance series entitled, The Enduring Song: A Historical Exploration of Jews in Music. This program will continue through July, and we’ll have more details available soon.

We’re really excited to announce that our popular Israeli/Jewish Film Series is finally returning! Look for more information on the August re-launch of this longstanding MJCC offering in the near future. See page 6.

Interested in making a difference in the lives of others as a volunteer? Visit oregonjcc.org/volunteer to sign up to be a J Ambassador or Arts and Culture Events Volunteer

Whatever you choose to do, we hope you’ll make the J a big part of your summer!

SUPPORT THE MJCC!

Your support allows us to enrich lives, build community, and inspire Jewish journeys.

The longer, warmer days are finally here! Our Family Shabbat Dinners continue to take place every third Friday. We are excited to announce our Israeli/Jewish Film Series beginning in August as well as more National Theater Live screenings in July. Come in out of the heat to enjoy films in our air conditioned ballroom to enjoy the cinematic experience!

The Mittleman Jewish Community Center is recognized by the community as a safe and welcoming place for thousands in Multnomah County to gather, work-out, play and commune.

Please consider becoming a donor. Your gift of any size is needed and appreciated. We offer programs and services for little ones who have just joined our community to older adults well into their 90s and everyone in between. Hundreds of MJCC members, guests, and community members come through our doors for programs, services, and events on a daily basis. Membership, program fees and rentals account for approximately 86 percent of our annual revenue, and we are dependent upon donations and grants to make up the difference.

Here is what your generous taxdeductible donation to the MJCC supports:

• New equipment in our fitness center, gymnasium and studios

• Day Camp Scholarships

• Cultural and holiday programming that celebrates our Jewish community

• Need-based financial assistance to ensure that everyone has access

• Competitive salaries to retain staff and trainers that are the face of the JCC

• Updates to the Ballroom and the lobby, and so much more!

Over the years, our programs and services have evolved and expanded, but our mission remains unchanged - to be an inclusive and welcoming hub for a diverse community, fostering lifelong wellness and providing dynamic social and educational experiences, grounded in Jewish values and culture.

Here are a few ways you can support the J:

• Anyone who donates $360 or more becomes a member of The Friends of the Center Society. Friends of the Center Society members get invited to exclusive events and programs throughout the year

• You can donate appreciated stock or a minimum retirement distribution and avoid capital gains (please discuss with your tax professional)

• Become a Sustaining Member for $1800/year (tax deduction depends on your membership cost)

• Add a monthly donation on to your membership

• Join the MJCC Legacy Society. You can support the JCC with an afterlife gift from your will, trust, retirement plan, IRA, or life insurance policy

Thank you for your support of the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. Donate at oregonjcc.org/donate.

For more information about how you can support the J, please contact Bess Butterworth, Development Events and Community Programs Manager at bbutterworth@oregonjcc.org or at 503.452.3427.
