WELCOME Dear Friends, We are very excited about the wide range of special offerings that we have lined up for this fall! Whether you are looking for opportunities to learn, socialize, celebrate, volunteer, or immerse yourself in arts and culture, we have programs to meet your needs.

On September 22, Portland Chamber Music will present “Bright Voices of the Darkest Hour: Music and the Holocaust.”

This program will provide a beautiful opportunity to consider the Holocaust through the lens of music. Also in September, our partnership with Third Rail Theatre continues with more screenings from National Theatre Live! See page six for details.

October brings the Jewish holidays this year. On October 20, join us to celebrate Sukkot with our annual family program, Pizza in the Hut. We’ll also be presenting Drag Queen Bingo from 4:00 - 5:30 pm. Join us for this fun, family event, rescheduled from our Pride Month programs.

Then it’s prom night! On October 27, from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, we’ll be partnering with JFCS to present our second Annual Schmoozapalooza, “A Prom for Seniors 60 and Better.” Boogie in style with friends old and new for a celebratory afternoon. Light kosher refreshments are included. This is a free event, but RSVP’s will be required.

Rose City Self-Defense is back this fall. Classes will take place on Monday evenings in October and are free to all community members. More information on page seven.

We are excited to get our new volunteer program in full swing! Join us on November 14 for our Volunteering Service Learning Program TZEDEK, for a meaningful day and to learn more about volunteer opportunities at the MJCC! We’ll be celebrating the arts in November with our ORA Exhibition. This fall’s exhibition will showcase artists from the Mikvah Project and will last throughout the month.

A reminder that our pool closure will take place from August 31 to September 15 this year. That’s slightly later than usual. This closure provides an opportunity for the MJCC to undertake important maintenance, repair, and upgrade projects to improve your aquatics experience.

Women's Self-Defense Classes

Volunteering Service NEW Learning Program TZEDEK

We will be creating sack lunches for the Blanchet House during two different sessions. All materials will be provided.

AQUATICS

Aquatics Program We offer a comprehensive aquatics program. We have a 25-yard lap pool and a Warm Water Pool which is ideal for relaxation, recuperation, and recreation.

Both pools offer ADA-compliant accessibility lifts for those who need assistance getting in and out of the water.

Our staff can show you how the lifts operate and can even assist you.

About Swim Lessons Group Lessons

We are scheduling group lessons for members-only on a month-by-month basis. We post monthly lessons on our website and include them in our weekly "What's Happening" email.

Reminder: Registration closes the Wednesday before the first class.

Private + Semi-Private Lessons

Private and semi-private lessons are scheduled based on instructor and pool availability. We do not keep a waitlist for private lessons.

Registration for each month opens the 5th of the previous month.

Price per person.

Private: 1 x 1/2 hour (one-on-one) Cost: $70. Member Cost: $50.

Private: 5 x 1/2 hour (one-on-one) Cost: $350. Member Cost: $250.

Semi-private: 1 x 1/2 hour (one instructor to two students) Cost: $50. Member Cost: $36.

Semi-private: 5 x 1/2 hour (one instructor to two students) Cost per student.

Cost: $250. Member Cost: $180.

Swim Teams

Stingrays Swim Team (Ages 6 - 18) Develop proper technique, learn the basics of competitive swimming to participate in USA Swimming meets, and make new friends. Prerequisites: Must be able to swim 100 yards each of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. Main Pool Fall tryouts will be posted on the website by August 31. Subsequent tryouts will be quarterly in December, March, and June. Quarterly tryout spots will go first to those on the waitlist.

BRONZE

Monday - Thursday: 4:45 - 5:30 pm Cost: $125/per month.

Member Cost: $105/per month.

SILVER

Monday - Thursday: 5:30 - 6:30 pm Cost: $155/per month.

Member Cost: $130/per month.

GOLD

Dryland Tuesday/Thursday: 4:30 - 5:30 pm Monday/Wednesday: 5:15 - 6:45 pm Tuesday/Thursday: 5:30 - 6:45 pm Friday: 4:30 - 6pm Cost: $200/per month.

Member Cost: $175/per month.

Junior Rays (Pre-Swim Team ages 5+)

For those interested in pursuing swimming as a sport, start the transition from lessons to competition.

Focus on technique and learn all four competitive strokes in a team environment. Prerequisites: Must be able to confidently swim 25 yards each of freestyle and backstroke, and take direction in a group of 10 - 12 swimmers from a coach who is generally on-deck. Main Pool Fall tryouts will be posted on the website by August 31. Subsequent tryouts will be quarterly in December, March, and June. Quarterly tryout spots will go first to those on the waitlist.

JUNIOR RAYS

Monday - Thursday: 4:45 - 5:30 pm Cost: $125/ per month.

Member Cost: $105/per month.

Free Adult Aquatic Exercise Classes

Aquatic exercise classes are free to members and day pass users.

Stingrays Masters

This meditative class combines deep breathing with progressive movements of the arms, legs, and torso. Ai-Chi helps improve balance and range of motion and promotes relaxation and cardiovascular health. Warm Pool Tuesday + Thursday 8:05 - 9:00 am

Keep fit and work out with our recreational Masters. This is a low-key and welcoming drop-in group. Led by long-time member volunteer Ronald Cobb.

Monday + Wednesday 7:00 - 8:00 pm Cost: $20/day. Member Cost: Free.

Main Pool

Aquarobics M

This no-to-low impact class is perfect for those looking to start a fitness routine or add variety to an existing one. The water provides buoyancy for support while you build a strong body. Great for rehabilitating after injuries. Main Pool Monday, Wednesday, + Friday 9:00 - 9:55 am

Aquapower M

Contact the Welcome Desk to register for Stingrays Masters.

Enjoy the benefits and experience the challenges of practicing yoga in an aquatic environment. Warm water supports your body, allowing greater range of motion with no fear of falling, and helps to develop a new relationship with your breath and balance. Warm Pool Tuesday + Thursday 10:15 - 11:00 am

Arthritis Exercise M

Warm water helps relieve arthritis pain and stiffness. This class will help you gain flexibility, range of motion, and strength while relieving pain.

Mandy is a licensed massage therapist who recently graduated from Oregon School of Massage in 2024, setting herself on a journey of promoting healing through touch. While she is newly licensed, she has been practicing massage for 3 years studying Swedish, Shiatsu, and Myofascial techniques, as well as earning a certification in aromatherapy.

Sofia uses Swedish and treatment-focused bodywork, and incorporates Eastern style modalities like Reflexology, Shiatsu and Hawaiian style massage “Lomi-Lomi” as well.

From the wind-surfers of Maui to the Portland Marathon to mothers in labor, Sofia has increased her compassion, wisdom, and her practical approach to massage.

JCCA Membership Perk

As a member of JCCA, the MJCC offers mutual reciprocation with membership at other JCCA member facilities. The MJCC welcomes all out-of-town JCC members for a maximum of 14 non-consecutive days per calendar year. After 14 days, we have a special offer of $12 per day per person. Members of the MJCC will enjoy reciprocal membership at other JCCA facilities according to that location’s specific policy. Make sure to bring your member ID card!

Cancellation Policies Class Cancellation Unless otherwise stated for a specific program, general policy regarding class cancellation is as follows: • Cancellation made at least 6 days before class start date: full refund • Cancellation within 5 days of the first day of class: no refund Massage Cancellation Please call our Welcome Desk at 503.244.0111 at least 24 hours in advance. You will be charged a $35 cancellation fee for any missed appointments or for less than 24 hour notice.

Membership Commitment Policy

As a member of the Mittleman Jewish Community Center, you’ll enjoy access to a wide range of benefits including a recently refreshed fitness area along with events and activities all year round and more. Current offerings and social activities provided by the MJCC at the time of initiating membership may change or be discontinued at any time and fees for any activity may be implemented and /or increased in the future. The commitment to fulfill your contract with the MJCC remains the same even if activity availability changes.

Registration FAQs

• You may register online or in person at the Welcome Desk.

• Payment must be provided at time of registration to guarantee a spot.

• Unless otherwise stated for a specific program, registration for all classes closes the Wednesday before the first class. Late registrations will not be accepted.

• If participants miss a class, they are not allowed to drop into other classes.

If a class or program is cancelled due to inclement weather or other cause, we are unable to schedule make-up sessions or provide refunds.

Inclement Weather Policy

In the event of extreme weather or other outside circumstances that may impact the MJCC’s normal operations, members will be notified of any changes to normally scheduled activities via email.

Closures, delayed start times or limited services are also posted on the website.

There will not be a refund if classes or events are cancelled in the event of extreme weather or other circumstances outside of our control.

The MJCC is a proud beneficiary of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland and is proud of our partnership with it in strengthening our local Jewish community and the greater Portland community.

Cafe at the J is Portland’s only kosher dairy restaurant certified by Oregon K, and offers sandwiches, soups, salads, pizza, falafel, pasta, bagels, and more!

It is located inside the MJCC. Surf the net while you enjoy the cafe with our free wifi.
