“A successful man has to start somewhere” founded by The Reverend George Floyd Rogers Rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Covington, Virginia BOYS HOME OF VIRGINIA cares for and educates boys ages 6 - 18. Our PURPOSE is to provide a caring and nurturing environment in which youth under our care can attain the mission and goals of BOYS HOME OF VIRGINIA. The MISSION of BOYS HOME OF VIRGINIA is to help each student strive toward becoming a productive member of society by developing his spiritual, mental, physical and social potentials. All successful men were once boys. But not all boys become successful men. Whether it's due to a lack of positive role models, quality living circumstances, or a welcoming school environment. We provide each so that boys can go on to be successful men. Men who will take care of their families. Men who will contribute their gifts. Men who will be role models for the next generation of men. At Boys Home of Virginia, we show our boys that every day is a step toward that success.

A Message from the President As I look back on another year of serving on the Boys Home Board of Trustees, I’d like to express my appreciation for everyone who contributed to the mission of Boys Home. While none of us expected to be where we are a year ago, I am so thankful to my fellow Trustees, the Boys Home staff, and especially Donnie Wheatley for their hard work and adaptability. As the health crisis spread, everyone involved in Boys Home worked together to respond in a way that kept students safe, happy, and healthy. Looking forward, we anticipate taking the lessons learned from the past several months and using them as our guideposts in the year ahead. We are so thankful for all of you who make the work of Boys Home possible. In the middle of a changing world, you help Boys Home stay true to its history and mission of providing a caring, Christian environment for young men who need a second chance. A Message from the Executive Director The 2019-2020 year certainly ended in a way we didn’t expect. The only thing I can say is thank you, thank you, and thank you again! At the start of the pandemic, I was extremely anxious about what the pandemic would mean for Boys Home, and how we would be able to continue the mission. However, that anxiety was soon transformed into overwhelming gratitude, as so many of you stepped up to support us through those initial months. Thank you for being there for Boys Home, and most importantly, for the students. As Boys Home weathered all the unexpected changes and expenses, your generosity allowed us to continue providing students with the care they need to grow into successful men. In a time when we’re limited to campus more than ever, I’m also especially thankful for everything the campus has to offer, providing residents with opportunities for education and recreation. We appreciate the hard work and vision of those responsible for putting in place the infrastructure we have today, and I’d like to extend a personal thank you to all who contribute toward campus maintenance. The geography of our campus – the Old Village which was nestled in the valley along Midland Trail, the Hill where we live today, and the sheltering mountains, Sugarloaf and Lick – is where we draw the names for our giving societies. A new addition to the Applied Trades classes
New to the Boys Home Applied Trades program this year, Danny Cale’s home wiring class is a project-based, hands-on class that teaches not only home wiring, but the basics of budgeting, teamwork, and managing a company. A former Boys Home resident himself, Mr. Cale designed the class with Boys Home students in mind. The class is structured like a company; of the five students, the one with the best grade is the owner of the company, and the one with the second-best grade is the manager. Like a real company, the class gets “paid” for jobs completed, and they must “pay” for parts, tools, and training. As they learn more, they are able to bid on more complex jobs and “earn” more money for the company. The structure of the class has proven effective, as students compete to take control of the company, and all students strive to learn more and work together in order to take on more complex jobs. “What I find amazing is how competitive they are with their grades in order to take over the company,” says Mr. Cale. “and the competitiveness of the company is driving them to learn newer and bigger things.” Of the five students, four have A or A+ averages and show up on time every day. Project-based learning emphasizes practical knowledge
Here’s how it works: at the start of each project, the customer (Mr. Cale) requests a quote for work to be done, such as wiring a GFI outlet, a switch, a new light, and/or a three-way switch. The students create the proposal, and the customer has the option to accept or decline. Once the customer accepts the proposal, students create a purchase order for the parts & tools. Everyone works together to do the work; once complete, the electrical inspector (Mr. Cale) ensures everything is done properly, and the customer pays the company for the job. After each transaction, the company receives a balance sheet showing how much money is in their account. Learning from mistakes Despite their initial mistakes, Mr. Cale is confident in their knowledge and abilities. When asked if he would hire them to wire an outlet in his house, he responded with, “Yes, absolutely. Any one of them.” Putting their practical knowledge to use, the class plans to install the wiring in the new Applied Trades building later this year. Mr. Cale’s class is a great example of Boys Home School’s handson approach to education, which promotes learning through experience-based projects and models.

Boys Home of Virginia encourages the establishment of named endowed funds. Funds may be created to support different programs or may be established for restricted use. The funds appear permanently on the books of Boys Home in recognition of their ongoing support. Once established, additional gifts may be made at any time to the funds. Boys Home’s general endowment fund generates income to support the operating budget, benefiting the boys in all areas of their care. The Board of Trustees designates unrestricted bequests to this fund. During the fiscal year, the following bequests were received:

Operational Summary 2019-2020
Boys Home provides care and residential education for young men ages 6-18. The Mission of Boys Home is to help each resident strive toward becoming a productive member of society by developing his spiritual, mental, physical and social potential. Boys Home assisted 87 young men and their families with services this past fiscal year. The average length of stay was 1 year, 3 months and the average age was 13 years.

Intake & Evaluation - 30 to 60 days evaluation. Residents reside in the Wheatley Center.

Independent Living Skills Program - residents live in cottages with houseparents. All residents attend the oncampus Boys Home School.
