The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature

tHe GARDen HOUse...

a restored & updated historic home two blocks from main street This historic home originally was owned by Russell Lee Donley, who was born 1876, in Coshocton County, Ohio. Russell and his family moved to Cody in March 1910, under the advice from his doctor that he should move west, due to ill health in Ohio. Russell Lee Donley was a probate judge in Cody and owned a law firm with William Lee Simpson in the Klein Building. When the Mannings moved to Cody in the early 70's, Darlene had her eye on a potential restoration project. 1020 Bleistein fulfilled her expectations. The home is large enough to accommodate family and friends but also easy to maintain. The kitchen, master bedroom/ bath, family room, living room, formal dining room, office/parlor and utility room are on the main floor which facilitates the age in place concept. However, if the intent is to raise a family or entertain visiting family and guests, there are three bedrooms and an additional full bath on the second floor. The seller is a retired Master Gardner. At one point she had more flowers and trees than grass. While the front yard still has its share of flowers, trees and shrubs, it's been recently reseeded, knowing that future homeowners might prefer less maintenance. The back yard is full of surprises and garden spirit: extensive perennial flower beds, a wonderful purple fence, two arches with pear tree vines winding over the tops, and delightful ceramic chickens.

WELCOME TO THE GARDEN HOUSE An outdoor swing on the covered porch is the perfect entrance to this beautiful home. The Seller embraces each season, and to the neighbors' delight she arranges different decorations on the porch and front lawn. Enter the front door and you will see how the Seller has crossed new horizons for interior decorating. In every room there are interesting combinations of beautiful antique furniture, commissioned built-ins and repurposed yard sale treasures. The comfortable, tranquil living room flows naturally into an adjacent multi-use office/library/parlor. Each room is unique, bright, and airy!

Formal Dining Room The formal dining room is also situated at the front of house. It features a cherished antique bureau and a built in China closet. The soft colors and hand-crafted lattice work complete the restoration of this room. The floors throughout the house are a combination of original maple and new oak.

Beauty & Function The kitchen went through an extensive remodel in 2017. The quartz countertops compliment the chili-red stained alder cabinets. One large custom-built cabinet (floor to ceiling) in the kitchen is used as a pantry with multiple storage options. A similar cabinet (floor to ceiling) in the/ laundry/ mud room is used for recreational storage, household tools and miscellaneous items for furry friends. Memories are made around the large quartz island. On all occasions guests and family gather to help with meal preparation and enjoy the workability of the new kitchen. The kitchen prep area, next to the formal dining room, has a wet bar with custom built wine storage. Conveniently located on the far side of the kitchen is an entry to a powder room and the master bedroom. The new windows and ceiling fans make the kitchen seem much larger. The west side opens into a laundry room/mud room with washer/dryer and farm sink. Additional counter space offers ample room for canning, potting plants and crafting.

Family and dining The Family Room and adjacent Dining Area are multi-purpose rooms with lots of activity stations. Comfortable chairs and couches for movie watching, a wood burning fireplace to provide atmosphere and warmth, a desk with computer/printing station for all ages and lots of shelves for books and family photos.

Relaxation & Fresh Air The purposeful design of the house has a nice flow. A powder room off the kitchen shares a shower with the Master Bath and Master Bedroom. Private toilets and vanities are on each side of the shower. The Master Bedroom has French doors that opens onto the back patio. A bedroom window seat, backlit by the sun coming through large windows, is a cozy place to read or have tea.

Extra Rooms The second level has three bedrooms and one full bath. Plenty of room for family members or house guests.

Guests Welcome The guest house is currently being used by the Seller's son and his two young children. It would also make a great month to month or long-term rental.

“Perhaps the greatest asset of Buffalo Bill’s home town of Cody is the continuation of the spirit of individual accomplishment, western hospitality, honesty, friendliness, and joint cooperation of the citizens as was instilled in the early settlers by the “Old Scout”. That spirit still prevails and is manifested today on the streets and in the homes of Cody Country people.” - Cody Country Chamber of Commerce www.codychamber.org

The legendary Colonel William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody came to the West with the purpose of land development. The newly established community was aptly named after Cody in 1895. In 1902 the town was incorporated and Cody opened his “Hotel in the Rockies”, the Irma, named after his youngest daughter. He had a clear vision of expansion and was instrumental in bringing the Burlington Railroad to the area and establishing a road from Cody to the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Through his influence and support, the Buffalo Bill Reservoir and Dam were constructed (the highest dam in the world at the time). The result was the development of an irrigation system and ensured future agricultural success for the entire region.
