Veteran Educator Dave Jackson Bids Farewell To Beverly Hills By Laura Coleman With little fanfare, just as he likes it, veteran educator Dave Jackson yesterday bid farewell to the Beverly Hills Unified School District. SEC Charges Lago Vista Project Owner For $1.2 Billion ‘Ponzi Scheme’ By Victoria Talbot The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced Thursday an asset freeze against the group of unregistered investment companies called the Woodbridge Group of Companies, LLC and Woodland Hills resident Robert Shapiro, saying “the owner … bilked thousands of investors, many of them seniors, in a $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme.” Woodbridge LLCs were formed to purchase hundreds of luxury homes in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Holmby Hills, Pacific Palisades and throughout the West Los Angeles area. Among those homes was the property at 1260 Lago Vista Dr. that has galvanized neighbors in opposition to a proposed plan to develop the site

with a sprawling megamansion. Though the property, purchased for $4.5 million, has no approved plans or signed construction company, it has been leveraged for more than $14 million in loans. “Shapiro promised investors they would be repaid from the high rates of interest Shapiro’s companies were earning on loans the companies were purportedly making to third-party borrowers. However, nearly all the purported third-party borrowers were actually limited liability companies owned and controlled by Shapiro, which had no revenue, no bank accounts, and never paid any interest under the loans,” read the complaint. Beverly Hills School Reconfiguration Slated For 2018, Community Forums To Come In January By Laura Coleman After months of working toward consensus about just what the future of Beverly Hills schools should look like, the 22 members of Beverly Hills Unified’s Future Focused Schools Team (FFST) are poised to move forward with a united vision that will be presented to the school board next month. The school board is expected to vote on a reconfiguration plan at its Jan. 30 meeting. Before that occurs, however, the community at large is

invited to attend two “community-wide forums” next month to discuss options for potentially reconfiguring the school district in an effort to both streamline education and save money. The forums are slated for Wednesday, Jan. 10, and Thursday, Jan. 11, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Beverly Hills High School’s Salter Theatre. “We’re actually in all honesty looking for input,” emphasized El Rodeo Principal Kevin (see ‘RECONFIGURATION’ page 13)

Consider A Donation To Beverly Hills Schools Before Year End By Laura Coleman With the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate having finalized the tax reform bill on Wednesday, tax experts are hard at work determining just what the changes mean. Still, one change is certain, underscored local estate planning lawyer Jonathan Forester: “People’s tax brackets are going to change.” With 2018 just around the corner, Forester, who also serves as treasurer for the Beverly Hills Education Foundation (BHEF), emphasized that it was important for people to donate as much as possible before 2017 ends. “A gift in 2017 comes with a greater deduction than a gift in 2018,” he explained. “As part of the tax changes,

they’re doubling the standard deduction and eliminating a lot of other deductions. There’s a real risk as itemized deductions become less and less valuable, charitable giving on a whole is going to go way down.” Forester recommended that in addition to donating to your favorite charities, Beverly Hills residents would be well-served to donate to BHEF. Such donations, he said, are important as the money goes directly to Beverly Hills schools, which in turn help to strengthen property values. “It’s important to donate to Beverly Hills schools because it benefits the entire community,” emphasized BHEF President Cindy Trost. “Property values are high in part because of the schools.”

City Council Approves JPA With BHUSD – With Reservations By Victoria Talbot After a prolonged negotiation that has taken many turns, the Beverly Hills City Council approved the Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) with the Beverly Hills Unified School District (BHUSD) in a 41 vote, increasing the cost from $9.7 million to $10.5 million and increasing incrementally through 2020. Councilmember John Mirisch was the only “nay” vote, though several councilmembers expressed reservations about the agreement and the political gymnastics that led up to it. “I am very proud to support this agreement,” said Mayor Lili Bosse. “I feel very confident everybody that was involved… had the same goal… The schools are the foundation of our City. It is not a perfect agreement… I resent when people suggest they could have done it better… Run for school board.” Councilmember Robert Wunderlich took issue with a $59,830 audit the school district commissioned from Moss Adams to reinforce their claims that the JPA should be increased by 39

percent to $13.5 million. “There was no reason to commission an accounting report that was essentially debunked, that was based on unjustifiable assumptions,” said Wunderlich. “We are not adversaries. We have a common objective.” That audit was based on a seemingly fictitious “workbook,” which the school district could not produce for the City’s perusal. The audit claimed that the JPA provided no financial benefit to the district. Mirisch, Councilmember Les Friedman and Vice Mayor Julian Gold echoed Wunderlich’s sentiments. Gold and Mirisch served as liaisons to the BHUSD in the process. The negotiations and the agreement drew a flurry of remarks from Mirisch, who is the only councilmember with a child in the BHUSD. Mirisch objected to the timing, on the last day of Hanukkah and the start of the Christmas holidays. (see ‘BEVERLY HILLS JPA’ page 19)

Beverly Hills Comes Together Christmas Eve To Feed The Homeless By Laura Coleman The annual tradition of Beverly Hills families coming together on Christmas Eve to feed the homeless will take place once again this year on Sunday, Dec. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon at El Rodeo. The school district’s annual “Feed the Hungry” event, which is open to all Beverly Hills families, will take place in the school’s cafeteria. “The Feed the Hungry event is such an amazing tradition for our Beverly Hills schools. Our community has been blessed with so much and it is important

that we teach our children the importance of giving back,” said El Rodeo Principal Kevin Allen. This year’s goal is to make 1,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and create holiday cards that will then be packed into lunches and donated to the Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition. The Beverly Hills Unified School District tradition, which has been happening for more than a decade, is always a warm event that draws families together on behalf of a good cause and a fun time.

Beverly Hills Agrees To $98,000 For Café Seating On Rodeo Drive By Victoria Talbot The City of Beverly Hills has recently purchased 192 “bistro chairs” and 49 tables, along with the K-rails guarding them on Rodeo Drive, but the price tag to maintain them is an additional $98,000. The costs were approved Tuesday by a City Council that showed no hesitation for the expenditure, immediately following a penny-pinching discussion that was eventually given the go-ahead with former-Mayor Bob Tanenbaum and

his request for $21,468 to hold a free event for residents, featuring a Gospel Choir to mark the 25th anniversary of a similar concert held at Beverly Hills High School following the 1992 Los Angeles riots. In August, the City Council approved the seating through Dec. 31. The council approved continued maintenance of audio and lighting systems through June 30, as well, costing $48,620. They are the heart and soul of both hotels, and they bring to life our strong and caring company culture.” Prior to joining Dorchester Collection, Mady honed his hospitality leadership skills in his two decades at The RitzCarlton Hotel Company, where he was both VP and area general manager overseeing five Ritz-Carlton properties.

By Victoria Talbot Revisions to an ordinance regarding legislative advocacy will broaden key definitions, clarify exemptions, provide more information upon registration and tighten penalties for violations of the ordinance upon recommendations of the Sunshine Task Force (STF). The revisions are the result of several meetings of the STF, a group that is open to the public and includes among its members several lobbyists and land-use attorneys who regularly appear before the Planning Commission and City Council to represent clients in development matters. Seeking greater transparency in government, the changes are expected to readi-

ly identify those whose purpose is to influence decisions that affect the general public. The council passed the changes in a 4-1 vote, with Vice Mayor Julian Gold opposing. “I think this thing is ‘way too broad and not specific. I cannot support it,” he said. Among the revisions, a “Legislative Advocate” is defined as “Any individual who is compensate or who is hired, directed, retained or otherwise becomes entitled to be compensated for engaging in Legislative Advocacy and makes a Direct or Indirect Communication with a City Official or who is an Expenditure Lobbyist. Douglas Emmett Aquires Wilshire Office Building By Victoria Talbot Douglas Emmett, Inc has acquired the 146,300 squarefoot office building known as the Beverly Hills Financial Center, at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Canon Drive. 9401 Wilshire Blvd. is home to law firm Ervin, Cohen Jessup LLP, Barrister Executive Suites and Bank of the West. The acquisition brings the REIT holdings to more than 27 percent of the Class A office space in Beverly Hills. Douglas Emmett also owns approximately 71 percent of

the Class A office space in downtown Santa Monica. The building was purchased from MGM Management Co., which developed the property in 1972. In July, Douglas Emmet sold 9665 Wilshire Blvd. to Blackstone Group LP for a reported $177 million, or $1,024.40/ square foot. The purchase of 9401 Wilshire at 981/square foot, or $143.6 million, is

The 1260 Lago Vista property is owned by Sagebrook Investments, LLC, one of Shapiro’s companies. Shapiro is alleged by the SEC to have used new-investor money to pay the returns to existing investors, while using other moneys for a lavish lifestyle for his family. By December 2017, “the fraudulent scheme collapsed,” reads the complaint. Unable to pay investors their monthly dividends and interest payments, Shapiro filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Dec. 4, which “will leave investors with substantial losses,” alleges the SEC. “At least 2,600 of these investors unknowingly placed their retirement savings in Shapiro’s Ponzi scheme.” “Shapiro selected which properties would be purchased with the investors’ commingled funds. Shapiro would create a Shapiro Property LLC to hold title to the property, making RS (Robert Shapiro) Trust and Shapiro the ultimate beneficial owners of the properties. The City responded that “As property owners, the City has done everything it could to help this business become profitable, including a significant capital investment, as well as granting rent reductions of more than 50 percent from the original lease.” The settlement agreement ends the lease on Dec. 31, 2017, and gives the City the right to show the property to prospective tenants. However, the City has not yet selected a broker for the job. Hou, whose experience includes Energy Services Manager at Burbank Water and Power and Redevelopment Project Manager at the City of Burbank, acknowledged that the RFPs did not go out until more than a month after the settlement agreement was reached, pointing out that he manages more than 50 properties for the City. The property consists of 9,927 square feet of second floor retail space including kitchen and bar, and additionally, 1,327 square feet of first floor bakery and retail. The 450-square feet of al fresco dining space is not included in the leasable square footage. A future tenant would have to apply for an Open-Air Dining Permit. Though the kitchen is state-of-the-art, it is problematically located on the second floor. Uses for the property may include restaurant, entertainment, office and other commercial uses. Several real estate and restaurant sources have commented on the logistical difficulties the space presents, and speculation grows as to what awaits the property in the future. The location, on the Beverly Canon Gardens, is highly desirable. The RFA seeks a professional that

The Commission seeks several forms of relief including asset freezes.” Beverly Hills attorney and Lago Vista resident Ronald Richards has been warning the City for 10 months about Shapiro. “The City of Beverly Hills should never have ignored this even in connection with at the R-1 permit for Lago Vista . can conduct strategic planning for marketing for a commercial use, who can discuss a future project at public meetings and handle all the customary activities associated with real estate. Proposals are due Jan. 5, 2018, to be awarded Jan. 22. Former Deputy City Manager/ Director of Capital Assets David Lightner left the City after 32 under a cloud following the illegal removal of 196 trees on arsenic-contaminated Lots 12 and 13. Lightner’s property manager, Brenda Lavender, was arrested in July and charged with felony Misappropriation of Public Fund and Perjury by Declaration. She had allegedly failed to collect more than $800,000 in rent from a City tenant and to disclose a $15,000 loan on her Statements of Economic Interests – Form 700, which she allegedly borrowed from a City tenant. Lavender had been responsible for the City’s 280,000 square feet of commercial property and the collection of monthly lease payments. At the time of the incident involving Lavender, City Manager Mahdi Aluzri said that the City has reorganized its property management operation and split the responsibilities among three City departments to provide more oversight. Administrative Services collects rents; Policy and Management oversees the leasing of properties; and Public Works manages tenant relations. However, the settlement agreement for the Bouchon stipulates that upon approval of the agreement, the tenant “shall pay $162,318.17… delivered to Landlord c/o Timothy Hou,” which seems in conflict with Aluzri’s statement. Last week, Bouchon closed its doors for good.

(CHLA) Wednesday to spread holiday cheer by dropping off a truckload of toys and, most importantly, donating blood at the hospital’s Blood Donor Center. The blood donation comes at an important time, as the hospital’s blood inventory is currently significantly lower than optimal numbers because of a consistent drop in donations during the holiday season. John Vittorio was one of the firefighters who answered the call for blood. He had just spent 11 days fighting the Thomas Fire, and he chose to come to CHLA while off-duty to give back. “Giving back to the community is so important, no matter how busy you are. Giving blood can save lives, and that’s better than any present you can buy,” says Vittorio. A CHLA partner since 2008, the Vernon Fire Department holds two blood drives every year, collecting around 200 units of blood annually for the hospital. “We are so thankful to the

heroes of the Vernon Fire Department. Not only are they putting their lives on the line to fight the wildfires that are ravaging Southern California, but they’re also giving the gift of life to our patients here at Children’s Hospital,” says Dr. Ajay Perumbeti, CHLA director of Transfusion Medicine. “Blood donations always drop around the holidays, but our patients require blood yearround. We strongly encourage

members of our community to please make an appointment with us to donate during the Christmas and New Year weeks.” CHLA’s goal is to attract 45 donors each day during the two holiday weeks to replenish its blood and platelet supply. On average, CHLA patients need 2,000 units of blood and blood components each month as part of the life-saving care the hospital provides.

Donors need to be 17 years of age or older (photo ID required) and weigh at least 110 pounds. They must also meet criteria for recent travel. To schedule an appointment, call 323-361-2441 or book a time online at www.chladonateblood.org. During the holiday weeks, the CHLA Blood Donor Center is open Tuesday-Friday from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

CHLA Researchers: New Cellular Approach May Control Progression Of Chronic Kidney Disease Researchers have demonstrated for the first time that extracellular vesicles— tiny protein-filled structures—isolated from amniotic fluid stem cells (AFSCs) can be used to effectively slow the progression of kidney damage in mice with a type of chronic kidney disease. The findings, by a research team at the Saban Research Institute of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), provide new insights about the mechanisms of kidney disease and point to a new approach for treatments. Study results were recently published online in Scientific Reports. Alport syndrome, a type of chronic kidney disease, is an inherited disease that causes progressive damage to the glomerulus—the area of the kidney responsible for filtering blood. In patients with Alport syndrome, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)—is known to be elevated early on in the disease. Increased VEGF causes scar tissue and severe damage to the cells that line the surface of blood vessels in the glomeruli eventually leading to kidney failure. “By the time children born with Alport syndrome reach adult life, they typically need dialysis to clear the waste from their blood and will require a kidney transplant,” said Laura Perin, PhD, co-director of the GOFARR Laboratory for Organ Regenerative Research and Cell Therapeutics in Urology and principal investigator of the study. In earlier studies, Perin’s research team demonstrated that injection of AFSCs could delay the progression of renal fibrosis and glomerular sclerosis in particular in mice with Alport syndrome. However, the mechanisms responsible for this therapeutic effect had not been determined.

In the current study, the research team hypothesized that AFSCs provide this protection to the kidney through release of extracellular vesicles—tiny membrane-surrounded structures that contain receptors on their surface that can bind to VEGF and reduce its biological activity on renal cells. The researchers isolated these vesicles and found that they could effectively target the glomerulus to control cellular homeostasis and maintain a stable level of functioning. “We have demonstrated that these vesicles can be used to regulate VEGF activity and prevent the glomerular capillary damage,” said Sargis Sedrakyan, PhD, the first author on the paper. “We can efficiently use the vesicles to help restore normal kidney function by curbing the progression of endothelial damage in the filtration unit of the kidney.” While vesicles have previously shown to be promising targets for developing treatments, this study represents the first time they have been applied to glomerular disease by preventing endothelial damage. The finding represents a potential glomerulus-targeted intervention for chronic kidney disease. “The advantage of this approach is that we can really modify the amount and the types of extracellular vesicles that we inject and they seem to be homing to and acting directly in the area that requires treatment,” said Perin, also an assistant professor of research urology at USC’s Keck School of Medicine. The team’s next step will be to validate the stem cell-derived vesicle in different types of chronic kidney disease with the aim of finding a therapy that is effective for all patients.

work which garnered four Oscars and several more nominations. Prior to entering feature films, he joined United Artists, where he oversaw TV series such as Gilligan’s Island, The Patty Duke Show and The Fugitive. Gottfried is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn; daughters Norah Weinstein (Brian) and Elizabeth Colling (Stephane); and four grandchildren. His death, at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, was confirmed by his wife, Mary Lynn Gottfried.

‘BATMAN ‘66’ Retrospective To Open at Hollywood Museum The Greatest President/founder of the Hollywood Museum in the historic Max Factor Building (www.hollywoodmuseum.org), Donelle Dadigan has announced that the museum is thrilled that actor Burt Ward and worldrenown Batman ‘66 collectors have created the first-ever “BATMAN ‘66” exhibit, opening Jan. 12—the same date as the 52nd anniversary of the 1966 premiere of the Batman ABC TV series. On Jan. 10, the museum will turn Hollywood into Gotham City as it projects the iconic Bat Signal on the side of the building at a VIP unveiling gala for the exhibit with special appearances by the show’s cast members Burt Ward, Lee Mariwether, Barbara Rush and other stars in attendance. The exhibit’s four sections (“Wayne Manor, “”The Batcave,” “Gallery of Guest Super Villains” and “The Collectibles of Batman ‘66”), pay tribute to the memory of the late Adam West who starred as Batman and honor the other half of the “Dynamic Duo,” Ward, and the show, still seen weekly in the U.S. and around the world. Last year’s release of Warner Bros. animated Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusader and this year’s Batman vs Two Face, keep the super hero hotter than ever, Dadigan says. “BATMAN ‘66” will feature original costumes and props from the show, which have not been seen since it originally aired from 1966-68. “We have costumes and props that evoke childhood memories of the ever-popular series. There is something for

Original Robin and Batman costumes will be part of “Batman ‘66.”

everyone—from the Batmobile and Batcycle to Burt and Adam’s original costumes worn during the show’s 120 episodes, as well as guest villains—and one of my favorites — the original Dr. Casandra costume worn by TV and film star Ida Lupino, that has never

been seen publicly before.” Other highlights include original costumes and costumes recreated because of age and condition, representing guest-star villains including The Riddler, The Joker, The Penguin and Mr. Freeze; life-size sculptures of the three women who brought Catwoman to life (Eartha Kitt, Lee Meriwether and the original, Julie Newmar) with costumes, as well as Yvonne Craig (Batgirl), and more, including West’s face and mannequin from 1966. Sough-after collectibles in the exhibit will include the “gotta-have” children’s lunch box, action figures, Batman and Robin puppets, rare Batman Ice Cream boxes, drinking cups and board games. Collectors Scott Sebring, Pat Evans, Tom Woodruff, Nate Truman, Mark Hardeman, Greg Maraio, Alex Zsolt, Christopher Chaisson, Bob Mitsch, Kelly DelCambre, Adrian Van Eck, Ivan Taback, Brian Puls, Chaz George, Buddy Rogers, Troy Maynus, Daniel Fopma, Dave Tripet, Grigg Espinoza, Rob Klein and Robert Jungweber have joined to create the exhibit with Wally Wingert as curator and Roger Neal, organizer. Said Ward: “I am excited to see all of this. It will be like a homecoming to reunite with these items and to remember my friend and crimefighting partner, Adam West.” The Hollywood Museum, at 1660 N. Highland Ave., at Hollywood Boulevard, is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday-Sunday. For information, call 323-464-7776 or visit www.TheHollywoodMuseum.com.

Showman: High Entertainment With A Message

I usually find large cast shows emulating circus fare, long and ultimately boring. The Greatest Showman is the exception. Using the nuances of the late 1900s and transplanting them into today’s contemporary world with song and choreography was an inspiration. We have a movie with character—in fact, many characters loosely taken from the life of P.T. Barnum— and with an important message that should resonate throughout the world. Hopefully. Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnum is at his singing and dancing best. His portrayal of the master showman has already garnered “Best Actor” nominations from many award voters including one from the Golden Globes. Starting from nothing, Barnum puts together an unlikely group of entertainers hoping to attract the interest of a highend audience. His dreams are at

Jerry Cutler On Film odds with the parents of his wife, Charity, who don’t think much of his far-fetched dreams. Zac Efron, as the wealthy Paul Carlyle, who eventually becomes Barnum’s partner, fulfills all that is asked of him and then some. His singing, dancing and romancing the acrobat Anne Wheeler portrayed by the exquisite Zendaya, is wonderful. The beautiful Jenny Lind, a major opera singer in Europe, is brought to America to star in Barnum’s foray into legitimate theatre. Portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson she is a huge success and a thorn in Charity’s side. Her acting is flawless and her presentation of Never Enough sung by the incredible Lauren Allred (I don’t know if she’s related), is another highlight of the movie. Directed by Michael Gracey and written by Johnny Bicks and Bill Condon with songs by La La Land’s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, “The Greatest Showman” doesn’t waver nor spend time with frivolities. It moves effortlessly as everyone involved rises to the occasion. A woman (Keala Settle) sporting a beard and Tom Thumb (Sam Humphrey), the smallest man in the world are at the center of the action when the circus is threatened with bankruptcy. Both are terrific. The rest of the ensemble, all of whom sing and dance, are (see ‘SHOWMAN,’ page 18)

Allen, one of the FFST members. Other members include Beverly Hills High School Principal Mark Mead along with community leaders Jonathan Prince, Franny Rennie, Mark Slavkin, Ronit Stone and Merle Bauer. Over the course of the past two months, the team has been meeting regularly and with consistent enthusiasm (twice this week) in an effort to provide thoughtful options on how to best reconfigure the district’s four middle schools. In the wake of declining enrollment, over-staffing and a looming budget crisis, the Board of Education has been vocal in its support of expeditiously creating a solution. “It’s really been a process,” said Allen, who noted how the team was incredibly data-driven and worked toward creating possible solutions only after having all the numbers. “We are a viable district exactly as we are today except for our financial position and we have to do something to address that.” BHUSD is currently facing a compounding $5 million annual budget deficit. Superintendent Michael Bregy, with full board support, has been advocating for the creation of a dedicated middle school since he was hired last February. “It’s like we’re running nine schools,” he previously told the board. After whittling down some two dozen possibilities, the FFST has honed in on two primary options: The current model of four K-8 schools and one 9-12 high school, as well as a version of that model that would repurpose one school

been just a light to me. I’m going to miss them, the district, the kids. I leave the district with very mixed emotions.” Jackson, who is solidly in his 60s, was lured out of retirement by Board of Education President Lisa Korbatov, who prevailed upon him to take up the reigns of a high school left in turmoil following the departure of its former principal (who resigned in concert with announcing his unsuccessful bid to run for the school board and then sued the school district). Jackson said he initially planned to stay on as principal for one year but ultimately accepted a second year after realizing that there was more work to be done. “Mr. Jackson has not only been a gift to BHHS, but also the entire district. His priority was always about the students, and he continuously put them above all else. Mr. Jackson has made an indelible mark on our community, and will be greatly missed,” BHHS PTA copresidents Jodi Galen and Laurie Okum told the Courier. Indeed, under Jackson’s leadership

building for other use and translate to having three K-8 schools and one 9-12 high school; and a model that includes one dedicated 6-8 middle school, in addition to three K-5 elementary schools and one 9-12 high school, as well as a version of that model that would repurpose one school building for other use and translate to having two K-5 elementary schools, one 6-8 middle school, and one 9-12 high school. Allen, who helms the K-8 with the highest test scores in the district, said that there are some absolute advantages to having a dedicated middle school, including opportunities for enrichment and acceleration. Of course, he said, there is also a trade off; namely, the district loses its “small little community” that the middle schoolers now enjoy. “Life is a trade-off and this is no different than that,” he said. “There are advantages and different disadvantages to this reconfiguration. Both sides are viable...but given the reality of everything we had to consider (such as facilties, budget, construction projects), the decision is about what we think is going to be most viable in meeting the needs of our kids.” Following winter break, the FFST will meet once again on Monday, Jan. 8, just days before the evening community forums are slated to take place. The two forums will be formatted identically, with Bregy and the FFST delivering a presentation about the collaborative team process and reconfiguration options for BHUSD at 7 p.m. Questions and dialogue are set to follow at 7:30 p.m. For more information, or to submit comments or questions, visit: tinyurl.com/BHFFST. at the high school, test scores rose and programs (particularly those connected to Career Technical Education) were greatly enhanced. But at the end of the day, beyond academic success, Jackson said that what was most important to him was true student success. “I think the most important thing is to be a good human being,” he said. “I want happy kids. I want good kids. I want nice kids.” Superintendent Michael Bregy, who tapped Jackson to lead the facilities program, praised Jackson’s work on behalf of BHUSD. “I have been impressed with the fact that Mr. Jackson is always hard at work – whether it’s a late night weekend in December or a Sunday in June – the man is constantly working,” he said. “Dave’s knowledge of the educational process, everything from the ‘nuts and bolts’ operations of the district to the disciplining, counseling and educating of students is incredible. Truly, the extent to which Dave Jackson has positively influenced BHUSD staff, students and colleagues is difficult to put into words.”

CHRIS CORNELL’S LEGACY—A coalition led by Vicky Cornell, the wife of the late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, has created an endowed fund of more than $1 million to support student scholarships at UCLA School of Law. The Chris Cornell Scholarship honors Cornell's commitment to justice, human rights and advocacy for those in need. Said UCLA Chancellor Gene Block: "This endowment honors an influential musical artist who cared about human rights and enables others the opportunity to make a positive impact in the world," he said. As part of Cornell’s long career as a songwriter and performer, Cornell wrote and recorded the title song for "The Promise" (2017), the first feature film to highlight the story of the Armenian genocide. All proceeds from the film have gone toward human rights causes, including creation of the Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA School of Law. Cornell donated all of his proceeds from the song to the International Rescue Committee. In November, the song was nominated for a Grammy for best rock performance. Photo by Jeff Lipsky

Bulldogs will take part the following day at the same time at Lawry’s on 100 N. La Cienega Blvd. On Jan. 1, 2018, Georgia and Oklahoma will compete in the 103rd Rose Bowl game, part of the College Football Playoff.

English Soccer Star Fined By Beverly Hills Police Over Noise Disturbances English Premier League soccer star Romelu Lukaku was fined $100 Monday after pleading no contest, through his attorney, to a disturbance of the peace citation stemming from five noise complaints at a Beverly Hills home where he was staying. In addition to the $100 fine, Lukaku was ordered to pay another $415 in court fees and penalties by March 19, according to a court spokeswoman. Lukaku also paid $450 to reimburse police for their time and expressed regret through his attorney Robert Humphreys. “Mr. Lukaku deeply regrets any inconvenience he caused the city of Beverly Hills,” Humphreys told The Guardian newspaper. “And he’s pleased by this settlement to make amends for his past conduct and pleased to have the matter behind him.” The 24-year-old striker,

who also plays for the Belgian national team, was not required to personally appear in court. The fine is a paltry sum for Lukaku, who signed a massive contract just after his arrest in Beverly Hills. About a week after his July 2 arrest and same day release, Manchester United announced the team had signed a five-year deal for Lukaku worth at least 75 million British pounds or nearly $100 million. Performance add-ons to the contract between Manchester United and Everton, Lukaku's former team, could bring the total to nearly $120 million, according to published reports. Lukaku’s 25 goals last season for Everton was the second-highest number in the Premier League and he ranks among the best strikers in the league this season. –– City News Service

not only integral to the film, but highly entertaining as well. Aside from the entertainment value there is a message here. Regardless of our differences and blind prejudices, it is possible that the day will come when the tall, the small, the beautiful and not so beautiful will sing and dance together with those of opposing views and maybe, just maybe, patch up our differences. If not now, when? Happy holidays everyone and a sound and healthy 2018 to one and all.

Veteran-Turned-Farmer Harvests New Life in Microgreens at Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market By Victoria Talbot One of the many merchants whose entrepreneurial inclinations have landed spots at the Beverly Hills Farmers’ Market is an Army veteran who spent eight years serving his country before turning to farming. In 10 months, Nathan Looney has commercialized a piece of niche produce, bringing to market one of the more nutritious – and least understood – offerings the Market has to offer. Microgreens are greens that have not fully matured, offering distinctive flavors that are used in fine-dining establishments to enhance cuisine.

They are more mature than sprouts, but much less mature than baby vegetables, and can take just days between planting and harvesting. This makes the product an exotic crop that has a very high value-to-investment, and a highly nutritious and trendy addition to lifestyle leaders such as clients in Beverly Hills. US Department of Agriculture researchers confirmed that, “In general, microgreens contained considerably higher levels of vitamins and carotenoids—about five times greater—than their mature plant counterparts, an indication that microgreens may be worth the trouble of delivering

them fresh during their short lives.” Looney, who served eight years in the military, obtained an undergraduate degree after he left the service. Microgreen farming requires significantly less land and produces more product, but he could begin producing in backyard farms. He first began his farming in 2015 to raise money to invest in a commercial business enterprise. Ten months ago, an army buddy invited him to sublease space. Today he is one of the US Veteran farmers who will be interviewed for a PBS documentary and on KTLA live.

The City Council approved the janitorial services, landscape/planter rentals, landscape rental watering, security and chair recovery, and maintenance of the K-rail, tables and chairs through Jun. 30. In August, the council directed staff to develop conceptions for permanent seating arrangements on Rodeo Drive. These concepts are expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2018, when they will be presented to the City. The costs include janitorial service - $38,000; planter rentals, including exchanges $31,000; irrigation for planters - $13,000; security and chair

But he objected to “process and procedure of the vote,” the “legality” and the “accountability,” calling it “deal-making by attrition.” “I understand the desire to be done with this,” he said, “but in my opinion the timing is simply not kosher.” He said the JPA that they were voting on was not transparent, and not “the result of a dialogue through public meetings. It somehow just materialized.” Mirisch called for a link between JPA funds and improving academic excellence. “The District continues to demonstrate fiscal recklessness. We are giving them $30 million over three years with no accountability.” But in a surprise twist, if the City were to transfer funds to the schools, he said, “I would be willing to support the schools at a level higher than the current JPA, but I am not supporting the JPA.” The JPA agreement between the City and the school district for educational,

The current payment of $9.7 million will increase to $10.5 million the first year (2017-18), meaning that an additional appropriation of $800,000 is required to fulfill the agreement. For FY 2018-19 and 201920, the City will budget a onetime cost of $1,500,000 for the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on school campuses, and their annual maintenance costs of $150,000. An annual payment of $125,000 allocated to partially offset the cost of crossing guards will increase to 50 percent of the annual cost, currently estimated to become $138,000 annually. An additional appropriation of $13,000 will be required for FY 2017-18. The City’s Ambassadors will be deployed for field transition primarily on weekday evenings and weekends at designated sites as needed, at an annual recurring cost of

$80,000, as part of the City budget. The City will budget $100,000 security deposit against any damage to school property, which the City will replenish as funds are used, including an appropriation of $100,000 for FY 2017-18. The BHPD School Liaison Officers program will continue to be a budgeted expenditure. Finally, the new agreement will clarify priority uses between the BHUSD, City, Beverly Hills Education Foundation and the Parent Teacher Student Association to address competing or duplicate programming. A shared calendar for the community, clarification of procedures, access and timelines; storage of City program materials, and internet and telephone access for after school programs are part of the agreement. The additional appropriation for the 2017-18 FY totals $2,413,000. The new agreement obligates the City to $10.5 million for 2017-18, $11 million for 2018-19, and $11.5 million for 2019-20.

The horror-turned-socialcommentary film Get Out will be honored with the Producers Guild of America's Stanley Kramer Award, which recognizes movies for raising awareness of social issues, the guild announced Wednesday. Jordan Peele, who directed, wrote and co-produced Get Out, will share the PGA honor with co-producers Sean McKittrick, Jason Blum and

Edward Hamm. The Stanley Kramer Award was established in 2002. Previous films receiving the honor include An Inconvenient Truth, Hotel Rwanda, Precious, Bully, Fruitvale Station and Loving. The honor will be presented during the 29th annual PGA Awards ceremony Jan. 20 at The Beverly Hilton.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR In a letter to the Courier last week, Lewis Hall stated that my abstention from voting to elect my colleague, Noah Margo, to the office of VP of the BHUSD Board of Education was a violation of the school district’s bylaw. As a rule, I don’t respond to senseless letters, but am responding in this instance as a way of informing the community of a detrimental consequence of the board majority’s interpretation of the bylaw, that rotation to the office of vice president shall be determined solely by how long each member has served. That interpretation was the rationale for bypassing Isabel Hacker. At the board’s organization meeting on Dec. 5, I stated that Mr. Margo is well qualified to serve as, and my abstention is not a reflection of his capabilities. Rather, that electing him violates the bylaw which reads in part, “Notwithstanding any other provision… once a member has served as president that member shall drop to the bottom of the rotation order behind all other members…” How could anything be more crystal clear? Mr. Margo has served as vice president and president, while Mrs. Hacker has not. My colleagues, Howard Goldstein and Lisa Korbatov stated publicly that their interpretation of the bylaw is based on recent precedent, which includes electing me VP immediately after I joined the board in 2015, based on my nine years of service in the 1970s. The detrimental consequence of their interpretation of the bylaw is that future members of the Board will likely be ineligible to serve as officers within their initial four-year term because they will not have seniority over their colleagues. Clearly, that outcome does not comply with the letter or the intent of the bylaw. Mel Spitz, Past President BHUSD Board of Education ****** The “Future Focused“ Schools team is planning on presenting two options to the school board for a vote in January. Many parents in the BHUSD believe in the K-8 model, and strongly oppose its quick demolition. We understand that our middle school grades need more electives and educational opportunities, yet we also believe it is possible to have a “best practices” model implemented within the K-8 structure. This belief is founded not just in our own interests and those of our children, but in careful consideration of the historic, nationwide “middle school movement” that began in the ‘60s and ‘70s, and proved detrimental to children and districts in a number of followup studies. Many schools have consequently been moving back to the K-8 model since the early 2000s, with studies showing its benefits in findings as recently as this past October. For us to follow this discredited model today would be a significant step backwards. The parents and community members who started BH4OurKids ask simply that our voices be taken into consideration. Any reconfiguration option, including a dedicated middle school, demands that we consider the educational consequences for our students, the social benefits of reshuffling children this way, the impact on our teachers and facilities, and the greater effect on the Beverly Hills community and its property values. We are especially concerned at the rushed nature of this process. Discussion has lasted less than three months to date, and there is currently less than two months until a possible vote. This is extraordinary in a school district this size, a one which has long been a draw to our community. Many of us with school-age children moved into Beverly Hills for the schools and especially for the K-8 system; undertaking such a drastic change so hastily, without any chance for meaningful community input lacks necessary consideration, and exhibits a disregard for due process by the taxpayers who underwrite this system. We all share the same goal: to provide the best education for our children. We know that there are many different ways to achieve this, and that we must work together. We also know that the board is weighing a major decision that could alter the very foundation of our beloved district. This conversation demands the voices of all our parents–not just a select group. We ask for an open process and two-way communication from the superintendent as well as the school board. A hurried vote to create a dedicated middle school in August 2018 is dangerously rash and does not reflect the best interests of our students. BH4OurKids Committee ****** I wanted to thank Courier readers for their 198 email responses so far to my recent letter.

A number of questions have been sent to me by members of the community. 1. How come if you live in a house you can have guests over and smoke? 2. Why is the no smoking law aimed at apartment dwellers, most of whom rent? Is this a form of discrimination? 3. How are landlords and managers going to implement this law when we are not allowed to enter an apartment without giving 24 hours notice? Why should we as we are not law enforcement officials? 4. Who will enforce these new laws? 5. Why are all the two hour free City car parks filthy and who oversees those projects? 6. Why are the alleyways so disgusting and in need of repair with many not having been touched in years? 7. Why have the homeless taken over Beverly Hills and panhandle almost every restaurant eatery that has outside seating? 8. Why has the traffic control deteriorated so much and noise from these sports cars and motor bikes increased to an unacceptable level? 9. Why are the street and pavements constantly filthy? 10. Why do we not have more police and firemen and less administrators at the City who are clearly not doing their jobs? 11. Why is there such apathy at getting anything done? 12 Why haven’t we done more to secure residents from terror attacks by putting up barricades? Let us all get together and make Beverly Hills great again and the City it once was. You can email me at: denisegershon@me.com. Denise Gershon ****** The current proposal for modification and addition to 100 N. Crescent Dr. has caused a major concern for many of us living on Rexford and Crescent Drives. Developer overreach–asking 50 percent bonus density on an existing building which adds 30 feet to their existing 40 foot height and 50,000 square feet to their building plus 12,000 rooftop terrace–are all beyond what our zoning laws allow and will severely impacts the residents. The short fall of additional 148 parking slot has been addressed by valet parking that almost spells street parking with long wait time to retrieve cars. Their current height of 40 feet already causes shades and shadow from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. where by noon all our yards and house structures are covered. And any additional height will certainly cast shade and shadow on our property for all day. The delivery trucks constantly block the alley due to their insufficient loading docks depth which blocks the residential alley which is used by over 50 apartments and houses for their parking and driving. Street and alley traffic impacts are just a guesstimate without even knowing who the new tenant will be in future. If the increase in traffic is below some threshold that it passes the bar, without studying cumulative effect on traffic of all developments that just finished or the one started or the one proposed. The developer request for 50 percent bonus density is based on an Entertainment Overlay Ordinance issued to William Morris Endeavor to accommodate its office requirement and stay in City of Beverly Hills in 2007 when City was experiencing the lowest economy and real estate downturn. Extending the same bonus density to this project aside from setting a major precedent for all future developers to build more than zoning codes allow, is contradictory to the City of Beverly Hills General Plan for Growth which states the future growth of the City should not come by changes to our zoning standards in building height, density or scale, but rather by encouraging business developments. My only hope is that planning commissioners and City planners do not create a backdoor for big developers seeking bonus density by spot zoning buildings, especially when the building is in a transitional area next to residential houses. Residents like us should not go through the grueling task of reading 900 pages of project description and environmental reports and attend hearings after hearings, and run petitions to ask our civil servants to enforce our zoning laws on the book. Wiseman Dawoody ****** A ritual for my family back in the 1960s during the holiday season was a trip to see the lights at Candy Cane Lane in Woodland Hills, right off the 101 free-

Cartoon for the Courier by Janet Salter way. Four streets all decked out for Christmas and there were even some blue and white lights for Hanukkah. The holidays were one joyous and far more innocent time of celebration. Store windows had painted on images of Santa, Frosty and Rudolph. Season's greetings was the banner and candy canes were passed out by many local businesses and at school that final week before vacation. Today, some 50 years later, Candy Cane Lane exists not only in Woodland Hills but this year Beverly Hills just went off the charts with its own holiday light display–this has reached a Disneyland level. I keep saying to my wife Brigitte and our young daughters (Sofia and Olympia) how excited we are to see our first class Santa at The Paley Center and take in some classic TV specials in the theatre. Christmas and Hanukkah come together so beautifully in our City. I still marvel at the magical glow at night of the colored bulbs, particularly when I have one of my favorite Christmas CDs on in the car, which is now courtesy of YouTube streaming, like A Charlie Brown Christmas, The Ventures Christmas album, Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift For You, Herb Alpert and Tijuana Brass, and of course Sinatra’s A Jolly Christmas. I even enjoy Hanukkah carols a Jewish comedy album from the early ‘60s with actor Stanley Adams (Breakfast At Tiffany's) doing Yiddish versions of Christmas classics. Beverly Hills is the most spectacular holiday city I have ever seen and that includes Disneyland, because here in B.H. I can see the display without driving 50 miles to Anaheim and fighting huge crowds for a chance to visit my favorite attractions The Enchanted Tiki Room (still the best most private bathroom in the park) and Alice In Wonderland and Mr. Toad's Wild Ride with its day glo colors and whimsy. We are all so lucky to have B.H. looking a lot like a life size version of one of my favorite Christmas toys, the Lite Brite (which Disneyland used to great effect on the Main Street Electrical Parade.) Happy Holidays to all my neighbors and catch you at Santa's chair this weekend at the Paley. Still putting finishing touches on my list for this year. Hal Lifson ****** December is truly “the most wonderful time of the year". We get to celebrate two events that represent the very best of humankind. Hanukkah, a celebration of a peoples' passion and will to fight and even die for the freedom to worship that which burns eternal in their heart. A freedom that needs be cherished and respected by all. Christmas, the celebration of the birth of an enlightened spirit, a way-shower, whose words and deeds paved a pathway filled with love and kindness and compassion and forgiveness–a pathway to a heaven right here, right now. Sadly, there are those, the “political correctors” who would diminish and demean these holy days by mixing and mashing them up into some kind of neutralized holiday lest it offend someone on the way to a beheading celebration. And to celebrate this neutralized holiday by paying $100,000 per song to someone named Thicke while the children are starving. To the “political corrector” admonishing us for calling a Christmas tree a Christmas tree and the local rabbi who believes that equal space, time and money will somehow make Hanukkah more “Hanukahish”---Grow up! Please spare us from any more of your narcissistic verbal fisticuffs. Peace, love and good will to all.....
