Wanda Group’s Woes Mount With Athens, Gao, Golf All Out By Victoria Talbot The Athens Group Chief Operating Officer Jay Newman confirms Bloomberg reports that they have parted ways with the troubled Dalian Wanda Group on the One Beverly Hills development. “We are no longer involved,” said Newman, who declined to give details of the split. Wanda Beverly Hills Properties released the following statement: “Wanda is developing One Beverly Hills independently and looks for-

ward to successfully completing this iconic project.” The statement appears deliberately vague and did not address why the separation occurred, or who initiated it. Neither Wanda nor Athens would comment on the reasons for the split, or how it was executed, though both parties were given the opportunity to clarify the issues. “We brought the One Beverly Hills project to Wanda as their development partner,” Newman is (see ‘WANDA GROUP’ page 20)

Canon Drive, which comprises 13,000 square feet of space, including 412-418 N. Canon Drive; Porto Via, at 424 N. Canon Drive, occupies 4,000 square feet, having expanded in 1999; Il Pastaio, the venerable Drago Brothers restaurant, also expanded recently and

has 4,000 square feet, as does its neighbor Shiki, featuring authentic Japanese seasonal cuisine. COPS, COFFEE AND CARS – Cops and car enthusiasts were out early, and they needed their coffee, as they scoped out new, classic, vintage and muscle cars, along with hot rods Saturday at the “Cops, Cars & Coffee” event hosted by the Beverly Hills Police Department. Pictured from left: Sgt. Eric Hyon, Lt. Elisabeth Albanese, Capt. Mark Miner, Mayor Lili Bosse, Chief Sandra Spagnoli, Sgt. Christopher Coulter, Shawn Maiten, Reserve Officer Michael Schwa and Capt. By Victoria Talbot The Beverly Hills City Council approved the consent calendar on Tuesday’s agenda unanimously without pulling any items, including Item 7, which moves the date of the City’s General Municipal Election to award this council one extra year in office to comply with Senate Bill 415 (SB415). Awarding themselves the extra year increases the health benefits and pension liability for the City of Beverly Hills, giving pensions to councilmembers Lester Friedman and Robert Wunderlich, by adding a fifth year to the fouryear terms they were elected to serve. It also gives Wunderlich a term as mayor in his fifth year, which he would not have received as the lowest vote-getter in the March election. Councilmembers voted to create the ordinance for the extra year two weeks ago in a study session. SB415 aligns standalone municipal elections to coincide with statewide elections by November 2022. In that meeting, several options were presented that would satisfy the requirements. After a public comment by resident Judie Fenton, who ran the campaigns for Friedman and Vice Mayor Julian Gold, in which she alleged that it was “too confusing” for the voters to have both City Council and Board of Education on the same ballot, the City Council unanimously agreed that the elections could not be moved to November of even years. Fenton also said it would be more “fair” if Wunderlich became mayor with a fifth year. It is not clear what she meant by “fair,” since he was not the

top vote-getter. In addition, both Mayor Lili Bosse and Gold did not have an election in 2015 because there were no candidates to run against the wildlypopular Bosse. With the extra year, they will not have an election for nine years. The ordinance grants each member a five-year term. Alternatively, they could have served the four-year terms for which they were elected. The next two elections could then be for councilmembers who serve three-year terms, fulfilling the requirements of SB415. In that scenario, the March date and the integrity of a fouryear term would have been preserved, without adding extra unearned benefits. In addition, the voters and the candidates would have been informed of the shorter term for the next two elections. It was not offered as an option. While the decision has drawn the ire of many residents, comments made to the Courier confirm that several residents active in City affairs feel that going public with their opposition puts the delicate balance of their relationships, both personal and political, at risk of retaliation or creating “bad blood,” as one City commissioner, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, said. BHUSD Board of Education members also voted themselves an extra year to comply with SB415. But, said boardmember Lisa Korbatov, unlike City Council members, BHUSD offers no compensation, no health plans, pensions or stipends. The BHUSD Board does not have offices or staff. They have no district computers or phones. They serve at their own expense.

Bouchon Beverly Hills To Close At End Of Year

40 YEARS LATER – Prior to their official reunion last week, the Hawthorne School class of 1977 gathered at the Beverly Hills home of Michael Levi to talk, laugh and share stories of yesteryear. Temporary Turf Replaces Grass For Beverly Hills ArtSHOW At Beverly Gardens Park By Victoria Talbot Artificial turf has been installed at Beverly Gardens Park to accommodate this weekend’s Beverly Hills ArtSHOW during the construction and restoration process of the parks and Santa Monica Boulevard. The turf, which was installed Wednesday, will be removed Monday and Tuesday after the artSHOW, so construction on the underground utilities beneath the parks can continue, said Nancy HuntCoffey, the City’s Director of Community Services. Hunt-Coffey said that the cost of the turf is $47,000, paid from the City’s General Fund. Revenues from the artSHOW, which is held bi-annually, are approximately $200,000 per year, or $100,000 per artSHOW. “In an effort to conduct the semi-annual fall Beverly Hills artSHOW, which thousands of community members and visitors have come to enjoy over

the 45-year history, the City made the decision to temporarily place artificial turf on two of the four blocks of Beverly Gardens Park where the artSHOW is taking place,” read a statement from the City. The Santa Monica Boulevard reconstruction is being conducted alongside the renovation of the parks, said Hunt-Coffey, to accommodate the replacement of storm drains and sewers that run from the alleyways, under the parks and beneath Santa Monica Boulevard.

The City considered several options to use as temporary ground cover, including mulch. Artists, concerned that the dust and dirt would compromise their work, felt it would not meet their needs, Hunt-Coffey said. “It was determined that artificial turf would be the best material for a temporary covering during the artSHOW,” she said. The turf will be in place at the parks between Beverly and Rodeo Drives, and Crescent and Canon Drives.

By Matt Lopez Bouchon, a popular Beverly Hills staple since it opened in 2009, will close its doors at the end of the year. Chef Thomas Keller made the announcement in a statement released Wednesday, citing “adverse conditions” impacting the restaurant. According to Eater LA, which first reported the closure, several amendments had been made to Bouchon’s original lease since opening, as the restaurant requested reductions in issues such as parking fees. The news of Bouchon’s shutter comes on the heels of Keller’s The French Laundry in Napa being set to reopen after fires in the region. Bouchon restaurant, bakery and cafe have been operating out of a multi-floor property owned by the City of Beverly Hills. In his statement – reported by Eater LA – Keller alluded to disagreements with the City on several issues that led to Bouchon’s departure. “We have not been able to find a solution to the adverse conditions impacting our success with our landlord, the City of Beverly Hills, which would provide the proper conditions for the restaurant. The circumstances no longer exist to operate a profitable restaurant. We have had nine wonderful years

and I am proud of what we have achieved, making a mark in the challenging B.H. business landscape, hosting wonderful events with the community of Los Angeles and creating a loyal customer base. I especially want to commend everyone who has worked with us over the years to make such an important impact with our guests and the community. We will conclude our operations at the end of the year, but remain committed to providing our guests and neighbors with the cuisine, the service and the excellence they have come to expect from us until the very last minute of our last day.” The City responded to Keller’s statement on Thursday morning in a quote sent to Eater LA: “As property owners, the City has done everything it could to help these businesses become profitable, including a significant capital investment in the building, a tenant improvement allowance as well as granting rent reductions of more than 50 percent from the original lease. As a local government and as stewards of public assets we have a fiduciary to our tax payers and we are unable to do anymore. We wish Mr. Keller the utmost success in his other enterprises.” There is no word yet on what will take over the space occupied by Bouchon. PLAYBOY PUPPY – Hefner is a 22-pound, 11month-old who is believed to possibly be a Tibetan terrier mixed with poodle. He was given up because his owners didn’t have the time to care for him. For more information on how to adopt Hefner, visit www.shelterhopepetshop.org.

The event will be held at 7 pm, Oct. 26, in the Beverly Hills Public Library Auditorium, at 444 N. Rexford Drive. Parking is available in the structure next door. Call 310-288-2244 for more information.

By Matt Lopez North Santa Monica Boulevard reconstruction is moving toward its final segment, the City announced Wednesday. In a statement released by City spokesperson Therese Kosterman, she said workers began dismantling the south part of the roadway between Alpine and Doheny Drives this week. Until the end of December, four lanes of traffic will be open, with two in each

direction. Curbs and gutters will be replaced and raised crosswalks will be built. Beginning at the end of December, the road will be “demolished and rebuilt, requiring lane closures and detours” the City said. Construction equipment still impedes traffic flow at the intersection of Canon Drive and Santa Monica Boulevard. Robinson Gardens To Honor Tim Lindsay’s 21 Years Of Service By Laura Coleman Virginia Robinson Gardens Superintendent Tim Lindsay has a clear vision of how he wants the century-old historic Beverly Hills estate and gardens to look: exactly as though its namesake still lives there. “The ideal situation would be if Harry and Virginia Robinson were to show up and recognize this as their home,” he said. “The name that’s on the gate, Virginia and Harry Robinson, that’s who it still belongs to.” From the neoclassical

home that looks as though not a day has passed since Virginia Robinson died in 1977 to the verdant great lawn outside the estate that has seen hundreds

of fabulous garden parties to the groves of palm trees, terraced gardens, fountains and bushes of fragrant roses, Lindsay is responsible for ensuring that this Beverly Hills gem is awash in serenity. However, much of the reason the estate looks as immaculate as it does is in fact because Lindsay has ensured the proper renovation and preservation of the home and gardens. Hillside Basement Ordinance Hearing Set For Thursday

STRIDES FOR CJD – Hundreds of walkers and runners joined Jeffrey and Brandi Evans Saturday at Beverly Hills High School to raise funds and awareness for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), a rare and fatal brain disease that took the life of Brandi’s father. With no known treatment, CJD affects one million people worldwide. Brandi and her family members have a 50-50 chance of being stricken by the disease. Her family joined her for the 2.0 mile run/walk. Pictured at the Second Annual Strides for CJD event are, from left, Nancy Foster Thornton, Gwen Durkee, Brett Durkee, Moaki Durkee, Amanda Kalinsky, Brandi Evans, Beverly Hills Mayor Lili Bosse, Jeffrey Evans, Corby Foster, Blake Foster and Catherine Foster.

By Victoria Talbot A proposal for a new ordinance that would amend development standards for hillside basements in residential zones is scheduled to be heard Thursday at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. The proposed amendment pertains to grading and retaining walls in the hillside area of the City and is designed to reign in overdevelopment in the hillside area. The new ordinance will tighten restrictions on base-

ment sizes, which, under the current definition, do not count towards the total floor area (FAR). The floor area definition will be modified to change what will qualify as a “basement.” Currently, only the sides of the “basement” that face the street are included, leaving the downslope exposed. The new definition will encompass all sides for a basement exposure, said Assistant Planning Director Ryan Gohlich. (see ‘BASEMENTS’ page 19)

CHLA’s Annual Halloween Greeting Card Hospitals To Offer Patients Apple Watch App Drive Kicks Off Today On CHLA.org The Cedars-Sinai app is now available on Apple Watch. Its launch makes Cedars-Sinai one of only a few hospital systems to offer a digital, interactive app on the device. “Whether patients are at one of our hospitals, medical offices or at home, our goal is to leverage technology to put their health records in their hands by meeting them where they are,” said Darren Dworkin, Cedars-Sinai’s chief information officer. The Cedars-Sinai app is a resource for managing medical records and connecting with care teams. Patients and guests can locate the nearest hospital or urgent care facility, as well as get directions and call a location or provider. The app also provides a “Find a Doctor” tool that allows users to search for doctors by condition, procedure or the doctor’s name. “By expanding access to the CedarsSinai app on the Apple Watch, we can

bring a whole new level of accessibility to our patients,” said Matthew Pufall, mobile product manager at CedarsSinai. “We invite staff to download and explore the apps because our goal is to become ambassadors for the digital tools and innovative features Cedars-Sinai uses to improve the patient experience.” The free app for Apple Watch pairs with iPhones and may be found in the App Store by searching “Cedars-Sinai.” The app is also available on the iPad and Android phones. Patients and families are able to explore the app on their favorite device by visiting iTunes or Google Play.

Stop Diabetes Walk In Griffith Park Tomorrow Hundreds of walkers will gather for the Greater Los Angeles Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes, a fundraising walk benefiting the American Diabetes Association, beginning with registration at 7 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 21, and starting at 4730 Crystal Springs Dr. in Griffith Park. The event will also include a stage program and a festival that includes vendors, entertainment and diabetes re-

sources. Actor/producer/director Dennis Haysbert will serve as emcee. Public-health officials estimate that nearly 10 percent of adults in L.A. County have diabetes. In a recent study, UCLA researchers found an additional 46 percent of California adults are pre-diabetic. For more information, visit diabetes.org/stepoutgreaterlosangeles, or email stepoutgreaterLA@diabetes.org.

At Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), Halloween is all about treats when it comes to its patients. Supporters and friends in the community, across the country and around the world are invited to take part in the hospital’s annual Halloween greetingcard drive. Participants can visit CHLA.org/Halloween from Oct. 20-31 and create a special greeting card for the Halloween holiday by choosing from one of three designs (a dog, a cat or a bunny) and write a personal message to a patient. The cards with special notes will then be printed out, laminated and hand-delivered to CHLA’s pediatric patients along with fun goody bags on Halloween. The card distribution will tie in with the hospital’s other Halloween-themed festivities including costume dress-up, pumpkin carving and arts and crafts. This year’s Halloween campaign is sponsored by ServiceTitan, the home services management software company based in Glendale. For every Halloween card sent before Oct. 31, ServiceTitan will donate $1 to CHLA’s Helping Hands Fund, up to $10,000. Halloween can be a difficult time for hospitalized children who can’t attend school parties and celebrate with classmates or friends or go trick-or-treating. According to hospital personnel,

Jeff Hyland Honored By The Institute Of Classical Architecture & Art By Victoria Talbot Jeff Hyland, president of Hilton & Hyland, was honored Friday by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) at a dinner at the historic California Club, for a lifetime of work with the most celebrated and historic homes in the Los Angeles area. “Jeff Hyland has been a leader in the Los Angeles real estate scene for the past three decades and has personally brokered some of the city’s most high-profile transactions,”

read the event program. “As president of Hilton & Hyland, Jeff and his partner, Rick Hilton, have listed many of the most prestigious addresses in Los Angeles.” “The ICAA is ideally positioned at this time to work on the historic preservation of our great architecture,” said Hyland. “I was so excited to receive this honor. I’m especially honored to be the first realtor to receive this award.” ICAA typically recognizes architects, interior designers

and construction professionals. The award acknowledges Hyland’s role in elevating real estate to appreciate fine architecture, and how significant both preservation and design are in a city besieged with developers building oversized, garish properties. “Great architecture is not necessarily Mid-Century Modern, or whatever the ‘architecture du jour is’. Great architecture is recognizable, timeless, and worthy of preservation,” said Hyland.

Jeff & Lori Hyland

His book, The Legendary Estates of Beverly Hills, a 428page volume detailing the City’s most prestigious homes and the fascinating people who built them, is the culmination of his work as one of the most enduring and respected realtors in town. The California Club, was a perfect venue, given Hyland’s deep appreciation of fine and historic architecture and his commitment to historic preservation. Incorporated on Dec. 24, 1888, it is the second-oldest such club in Southern California (The Los Angeles Athletic Club was established in 1880). The building, erected in 1930, is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is considered one of the most important buildings of the architect Robert D. Farquhar. An Italian Renaissance Revival

style building with a private forecourt, setbacks and towers, it was among the tallest buildings in the area when the site was chosen. The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art is dedicated to advancing the classical tradition in architecture, urbanism and their allied arts through education, publication and advocacy. It offers a wide array of programs that are designed to promote the appreciation and practice of classical and traditional design, and publishes an academic journal as well as the acclaimed book series, The Classical America Series in Art and Architecture. Founded in 2004, the Southern California Chapter’s mission is to advance the contemporary practice and appreciation of the classical tradition in regional architecture.

Former Beverly Hills Home Of Suge Knight’s Death Row Records Sold In Off-Market Deal By Matt Lopez The Wilshire Boulevard building that was the former headquarters of Suge Knight’s controversial Death Row Records was sold this week in an off-market sale, The Real Deal reported. Freemont Capital Group, which is attached to Cardinal Equities’ Peter Cohen, purchased the nearly 30,000square foot office at 8200 Wilshire Boulevard for $17.5 million. Knight purchased the building for $2.95 million in 2000. He would file for bankruptcy and sell Death Row Records – which once had rap legends like Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog under its umbrella – just six years later, in 2006. The building is wellknown visually for the giant

billboard that sits atop its roof. 8200 Wilshire was redeveloped in 2008 and now holds executive suites for small law firms and entertainment companies, according to The Real Deal. The seller, an entity called 8200 Wilshire Development, purchased the building in 2006 for around $6 million, The Real Deal reported. Knight is currently set to go on trial in 2018 in the 2015 hitand-run death of Terry Carter.

The $50 ticket donation will benefit The Miracle Project, an inclusive theatre, film and arts program for people with autism, people with other disabilities and peers without disabilities, that meets at The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. The event will include a performance by the group and a chance to meet Adams, from Arizona, who is making her Beverly Hills debut with the show. “I’m an introvert by nature so drawing has always been my alternative to verbal expression,” says Adams, who will speak at the “Introspective Art” exhibition. “When I draw, I’m clean, minimalistic and to the point. Drawing quiets my scrambled mind. I go through emotions while creating the piece. I cry with my pieces, I’m joyful with them and everything in between.” Works like “Waiting for My Next Adventure” (above right) will be available with 20 percent of sales donated to The Miracle Project. To RSVP for the event, call 310-858-6545 or email angeldeva@gpdeva.com.

Mumsey Nemiroff Sets Return To Africa To Help Omo River Valley Tribes By Steve Simmons Mumsey Nemiroff is on a mission. The long-time Beverly Hills resident and past president of the Beverly Hills Women’s Club is making her 40th trip to Africa and returning to Ethiopia to help tribes in the country’s famed Omo River Valley. Nemiroff, an art historian, collector and enthusiastic advocate of African art, made her first trip to the continent in 1974. When she leaves on Oct. 25—it will be to investigate a situation that has raised concerns from human rights groups around the world. Italian construction company Salini

ROBINSON GARDENS

Lindsay became superintendent, dozens of new trees, none of which belonged, had been introduced into the property. Not only were the bulk of the new additions disrupting the continuity of the garden and in places, actually uprooting constructed walkways, they were simply not thriving. “I really was thoughtful in removing trees that were not in keeping with the design intent,” he described of his process to reveal the original beauty of the garden. “Virginia Robinson Gardens is a community resource, supported and utilized by the community it exists in.” The year after he came, in 1998, his first major project was to restore the fountains (of the 11 water features, only one was functioning in 1997). He then redid the foundations and the walls of the house and pool house, followed by repairing the balustrades and eventually all the roofs. And he just kept going – and continues – to constantly renovate and refine the gardens, always inspired by a particular sensitivity to the historic fabric of the estate. “This is really an extension of somebody’s personality,” he said. Lindsay recalled how one nextdoor neighbor was so delighted with the progress that the neighbor paid to purchase and plant four olive trees. Another neighbor, he said, likewise inspired to help, now sponsors part of the children’s program, which allows innercity kids to visit the gardens. Said Friends of Robinson Gardens founder Joan Selwyn: “Some people make a difference. How fortunate we have been to have had Tim Lindsay guide the restoration of the Virginia Robinson estate these past 20 years. Through his passion and dedication he has brought back the spirit and elegance of Mrs. Robinson‘s lifestyle. No question Mrs. Robinson would be pleased.”

gardens – February will mark his 21st year as superintendent – this coming week, the Friends of Robinson Gardens, the volunteer non-profit organization that has raised over $3 million toward the restoration of the historic estate, will celebrate him at a special luncheon at the gardens. For the past two decades, Lindsay has lovingly and meticulously tended the property, deciding on not just the best approach to take in the restoration and interpretation of the buildings and the social history of the estate, but also in how the garden continues to grow. Bequeathed to the county upon the death of Virginia Robinson, the estate is part of the L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On a weekly basis, scores – if not hundreds – of students and visitors tour the property, gaining a deeper appreciation of history and nature while enjoying the peaceful environment within a residential neighborhood. When Lindsay first took the job in 1997, he recalled how the gardens were thirsting for the care they had received in their earliest decades of life, when Virginia Robinson created the garden, planting more than 150 trees and shrubs species across the property. “I say the garden had been allowed to go to sleep,” he described of the intervening years between Virginia Robinson’s death and when his tenure at the gardens began. Lindsay recalled how the L.A. County Arboretum, Virginia Robinson Gardens’ sister garden (along with South Coast and Descanso), originally viewed the Beverly Hills estate as a “new opportunity” in a milder climate to try out many tree species that couldn’t grow in Arcadia. By the time

A definition of a “light court” would be added to the code, referring to an excavated area adjacent to a building that extends more than four feet from the building perimeter, enclosed on four sides and open on top, that allows natural light into the below-grade level of the building. The maximum height of walls, fences and hedges within the hillside area would be amended to 12-feet high, regardless of the side of the wall, fence or hedge from which the measurement is taken. Within any 50-foot section of property, the proposal includes a cumulative maximum height of 12-feet and a 10-foot landscaped horizontal distance between each wall. It is currently set at three feet, resulting in structures like the controversial property located at 1201 Laurel Way. “Cut and Fill” and calculations for grading would also be altered to streamline the process from the complex formula now in the code. Current language allows up to

3,000 cubic yards of import/export, and does not stipulate if it is compacted or excavated and thus, uncompacted material. Within any five-year period, no more than 2,400 cubic yards of earth could be imported or exported for a street that is 24-feet or wider. The cubic yardage will be based on in-ground earth volumes. For streets that are less than 24 feet in width, no more than 1,200 cubic yards of material could be imported/exported. Beverly Hills Municipal Code is currently set at 1,500 cubic yards. The proposed ordinance will also stipulate the total number of construction-related truck trips, not just hauling trips, be considered by a reviewing authority. The draft ordinance is on file at the Community Development Department at City Hall. Public comments can be delivered at the meeting in person or written form. Written comments may be directed to Senior Planner Timothea Tway at 310285-1122 or ttway@beverlyhills.org.

Bel-Air Fire Leaves Two Firefighters Injured By Matt Lopez A fire this week accidentally sparked by workers damaged a two-story Bel Air home that was being renovated and left two firefighters with nonlife-threatening injuries, authorities said. Firefighters sent to the 1000 block of Bel Air Road about 10 a.m. Tuesday extinguished the flames in 37 minutes and prevented the fire from spreading to vegetation or other homes, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

which they have acquired over several decades. They are being offered by real estate power-houses Jason Oppenheim of Oppenheim Group and Joyce Rey of Coldwell Banker Previews International. Rey is noted for selling exclusive, high-end residential real estate. At the moment, sources say that she is quietly offering a 6.7-acre compound in Beverly Hills on behalf of a Saudi Royal. The property, located on Ridgecrest Drive, is said to have three homes and is being shopped for $85 million. She has also listed La Belvedere at $100 million, Palazzo di Amore at $129 million and Harold Lloyd’s Green Acres at $350 million. “I specialize in selling beautiful homes,” said Rey, “And that’s been my passion for 43 years. But in the course of that time I have handled several commercial transactions… The wonderful half-block on

The Bel-Air Association has fought hard in the recent past to maintain clear access on upper Bel-Air Road, including allowing no parking. Those regulations helped make it easier for firefighters to quickly maneuver up to the property and put the fire out. The blaze was caused by workers doing roofing work, he said. One firefighter suffered a foot injury, and the other was treated for exhaustion, Humphrey said. Canon Drive is an exceptional offering. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I’m really proud to be working on that property.” Oppenheim agrees. The two partnered many years ago until he opened his own brokerage, and they still enjoy working together, he said. They have a great rapport. As partners, they brokered the sale of the Gagosian Gallery, another property that belonged to Savone, at 456 N. Camden Drive, for $11 million in 2013. The sale, said Oppenheim, was the highest price for retail space off Rodeo Drive in history. “This is one of the most unique and sought-after trophy properties,” he said. “The gem in any portfolio is to have property in the Beverly Hills Triangle. Four contiguous parcels in the heart of the Beverly Hills triangle is the most desirable.” Such a find is likely to be redeveloped, say sources, pointing to the Gensler renderings.

Senior Dog Adoption Event Coming To Cheviot Hills Rec Center By Victoria Talbot Susie’s Senior Dogs is a rescue organization that specializes in helping dogs who are older to get adopted. Senior dogs are the most often overlooked when it comes to adoption, waiting at the shelter for months, or even years. As they grow older, the cement confines and chaos

becomes more difficult to bear. Their bodies do not respond well. Often, according to Susie’s Seniors, they are dropped off because the owners cannot deal with them when they get older. They are turned over because they have health issues or when the owner, who has cared for them throughout

their lives, dies or goes to a facility for seniors. Despite their shortened life expectancy, the time they have left is valuable time, filled with love - just at a lower energy level than a puppy. The event is Nov. 4, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Cheviot Hills Recreation Center, 2551 Motor Ave.

WANDA GROUP

Last month, Deputy General Manager of the Wanda Group Rohan a`Beckett responded to questions arising after a series of news stories detailing an apparent “fall from grace” for the conglomerate. Q: What is the status of the project (One Beverly Hills) and what is the expected timeline for the project to be started and to be completed? A: The project is on schedule to break ground in 2017 and be completed in 2020. Q: In light of the concerns expressed, based on articles in numerous publications, will Wanda be able to use funds from China to support this project? A: One Beverly Hills is a US-funded development. Wanda is fully committed to bring this $1.2 billion hotel and condominium addition to Beverly Hills. The Athens Group, at press time, remains on the One Beverly Hills website, named as a Development Partner. Jianlin has experienced a series of apparent setbacks following his gangbuster announcement last year that Wanda is a “pack of wolves” that will “devour” the Disney theme park in China. Since then, a $1 billion deal to buy Dick Clark Productions fell

through, and earlier this summer it was forced to sell off most of its failing theme parks and some hotel assets. On Wednesday, Wanda’s Legendary Entertainment CEO Jack Gao, announced he was leaving. Gao served as the senior vice president of Wanda’s cultural affairs, according to the Hollywood Reporter. He also served as the interim CEO of Legendary after its founder, Thomas Tull, stepped down in January. On Tuesday, two of the Dalian Wanda Group Co. resort’s golf courses were shut down in northeastern China by the municipal government. The Fusong County government ordered the Changbaishan International Resort to close golf course operations. Wanda, it was announced Thursday, is now negotiating with lenders to reschedule some of its debt after its credit ratings were cut to junk, reported Bloomberg. That triggers early repayment for some offshore loans totaling more than $1 billion, they report. Both Moody’s Investors Service and S&P Global Rates downgraded the company’s largest shareholder, Dalian Wanda Commercial Properties Co. to below investment grade.

(Continued from page 1)

quoted as telling Bloomberg. Newman not only brought the project to Wanda, he brought Wanda to Beverly Hills, making political inroads with the City Council and Community Development as the hotel project went through approvals. Newman was also active in the “No on HH” campaign, going toe-to-toe with Wanda’s neighbor, Beny Alagem, owner of The Beverly Hilton and the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills. The Athens Group specializes in luxury resorts and urban hotels with a residential component, and Newman has said that plans were for the firm to see the project through its 2020 completion date. One Beverly Hills was scheduled to break ground earlier this month, according to sources close to the project who wish to remain anonymous. They speculated that the Wanda project is a different proposal today than it was a year ago, when Wanda’s billionaire chairman Wang Jianlin visited Los Angeles to announce that he planned to purchase one of the “Big Five” movie studios to make Chinacentric entertainment.

What a night under the stars... Had there been an Oscar for “Best Party of the Year,” “Best Personal Assistant of the Year,” and “Best Party Planner of the Year,” it would surely go to Stanley Black, Alisa Shapiro, and Danny Fisk for the incredible event. celebrating Stanley’s 85th, son Jack’s 60th and granddaughter Torie’s 30th, held in the backyard of Stanley’s magnificent estate...pure perfection and execution. Some 940 guests enjoyed the Brazilian themed blast that started with a cocktail reception with samba dancers, stilt walkers and the Duo Design Olympian acrobats. With a lead-covered dance floor over the pool, we whirled to the sounds of John Michael Hydo and also savored Calè, a Latin fusion musical group. During dinner we enjoyed more samba dancers and dancing waiters, 200 strong there to meet our every wish. We were welcomed by Rabbi David Baron and Stanley’s daughters Jill and Janis, son Jack and grandchildren Zack, Torie, Jason, Jenna and Brittany, who all spoke lovingly about their dad or grandfather and their late mother or grandmother Joyce... They are planting a special tree in the area we were sitting that attracts butterflies which Joyce loved. They called Stanley up to speak along with his gal pal Joan Ashton (looking gorgeous in blue). After he welcomed us and thanked us for coming, he had Joan say a couple of words among which she thanked his children for introducing her to Stanley at which point he shouted out: “After my wife passed away.” We all burst out in laughter. Friends of Stanley came in from Acapulco, Mexico City, Switzerland, New York, Israel, Florida... and even Pasadena... to join in the celebration.

has seen human inhabitants for two million years. An elder from one of the five main tribes impacted has even written Nemiroff, “When my father and grandfather lived here it was paradise, now the cattle are dying, the wildlife has left, crops do not grow and children are hungry.” The government’s plan is to relocate people, which is never an answer, Nemiroff says. “These are completely isolated people who can’t be homogenized or integrated into 20th century life. They couldn’t even become dishwashers. They don’t have plates or know what a fork is. Plus, they don’t want to leave.” Nemiroff plans to explore the possibility of bringing water wells to the area so the tribes—ranging from 2,000 to a few hundred members—can stay in the area. If the water table is low enough, Nemiroff says, a well can be drilled for $3,000. Discovering if that will allow the tribes to stay is a main goal of Nemiroff’s trip. Another dam has begun further down river, that will impact Lake Turkana in Kenya, and all the tribes. To draw attention to the situation Nemiroff, “is going to reconnoiter” with a photojournalist in Africa and meet with a couple in London who operative the High Five Club, made up of people who donate five pounds every month to be collectively used to fund projects in Africa including water wells, emergency hospitals and schools. The goal, Nemiroff says, is to come back with photographs and stories to document the tribes’ predicament. “Then we can proceed from an informed place.” Nemiroff is also working with Barbara Goldberg, founder and president of Wells Bring Hope, which drills deep-water wells to provide clean water to rural villages in Niger and West Africa. Stanley Black recently hosted a fundraiser for the nonprofit at his Beverly Hills home. With a 42-year relationship with the continent and its people, when Nemiroff heard of the dams, “it motivated me to go and be there,” she says. “These people touch my soul.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR I read that the members of the Beverly Hills City Council have just agreed to increase their time in office by one year. Am I wrong in stating that three of them were recently voted in for a four-year period? Should this not be put up to public vote? After only seven months in office, how can they vote themselves in for an extra year? The presence of Judie Fenton in the meeting does not come as a surprise to me seeing as she has power over 40 percent of the council and has had that power for years. She also gets one more year. This week, we are told the newcomers will get nicer pensions if they work five years. I am sure they considered that when they voted. Let’s not forget to look at some council expenditures, such as $2 million for holiday lighting and who knows how much for the dozens of speakers (electrical work, etc.) to add music to the shopping area. There are countless other areas of financial waste. The report by the City Clerk’s office has not been completed, as of yet. I cannot understand how these monies are not considered to be of better use if allocated to much needed protection at the schools. We don't care about the bickering between the school board and the council. The fact is the City claims it is making lots of money, which is why we have a traffic mess in Beverly Hills. Pablo Nankin, MD ****** In recognition of Civility Month, it is only fitting we praise the wonderful work done by our own BHBB (“Beverly Hills Bumbling Bureaucracy”). Then there is the amazing job done by a selfappointed, self-anointed citizen, who roams the City ferreting out those dastardly “Lords of the

Land” who have been hiding their buildings behind paintings of giant Redwood trees. Imagine if we had just three trained and experienced professional housing inspectors responding in real time to the calls of complaints, disputes, etc..between tenants and landlords. Unfortunately, that is not to be, for our BHBB has chosen a path given them by the wonderful folks from “Management Partners” who graciously ceased managing one another long enough to present a plan that states – for a mere $1 or $2 million, we will have a senior administrator, administrating a half dozen or so junior administrators who will be busy administrating each other---all in a lovely appointed office equipped with the latest administrative tools and studies. Thank you BHBB, “Management Partners,” and a special thanks to our ferret-er outer of dastardly “Lords of the Land.” Robert Block ****** Many thanks to the Courier’s Victoria Talbot for her clear reporting on the options that existed in regard to a state mandate for moving election cycles from odd to even years, known as SB 415. Prior to her article all the options that existed had not been disclosed to the public by our City Council. Without transparency, the council instead limited the discussion to a few options and swiftly moved to extend its members terms to five years as did the BHUSD Board of Education recently. Additional thanks to Talbot for validating that the residents of Beverly Hills are intelligent enough to understand this issue. The confused are our elected officials who seem to have forgotten that, in selecting public service and years in office, the decisions belong to the voters...not to them. Susan Mishler

THALIANS BASH FOR VETS–At The Thalians 10th anniversary “Backyard Bash,” the charity presented a $250,000 check to its prime beneficiary UCLA’s Operation Mend, which provides mental health services to wounded war veterans. Held in the home of Operation Mend Founder Ron Katz, MSNBC host/author Willie Geist served as emcee. Entertainment was provided by The Operation Mend All Star Band, with special guest singer Billy Idol. Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 20). Something quiet and small turns into a very successful and perhaps even famous venture. There's big love coming your way in the weeks to come. Through 2018 make your life easier by dealing with honest people -- and, it goes without saying, being one yourself. Travel brings luck, especially a road trip next month. Cancer and Aquarius adore you. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Since you already know what you think, you'll try other people's opinions and viewpoints on for size. This increases your capacity for empathy and your power, too, since it's easier to influence those you truly understand. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). There are those who will give before you ask, in ways you never expected. It's not really a favorable dynamic now, as some contributions come with too much attached to them. Besides, you want to make your own way. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). If there were a multiple-choice test on your life right now, you'd be bubbling in a lot of answers like “None of the above” and “All of the above,” as big groups of events seem to be either happening or not happening. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). It happens all of the time. Smart people do dumb things. Enlightened people do petty things. Simple people do complicated things. Maybe we should stop labeling people and just accept them and what they do. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Excitement and boredom are both states of mind that are inextricably linked to their impermanence. You'll relax into a deeper understanding of life as you accept what cannot be maintained indefinitely. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Learning is always forward movement, even when what you are learning seems to stop you from going further. Ask a different question. One good question may very well be all it takes to change everyt ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). You'll slip into your zone. The frame of mind that comes with this allows you to be quick, masterful and impervious to any obstruction that would stop a less powerful operator. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). Trust isn't an all-or-nothing game. It's about learning a person's nature to know what you can expect. Observation is the way. You'll ask a seemingly innocuous and open-ended question and then back off to see what's revealed. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). There's a relationship that's taking your focus now. You two are like porcupines in the snow. You need warmth but keep a certain distance. You'll find the balance. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You have no agenda and are not looking for what you can get out of a situation. You're simply there to help in whatever way you can, and because of this, you will be able to help many. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Remember when you experienced an instant attraction to someone you didn't know, and then got to know the person and saw the attraction erode? It could go another way this time, though. You'll have to say hello and find out. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). New aspirations will form in your mind and heart. Bits of brainstorms will align. Disparate ideas will bond to make plausible ones. All that chaotic, random energy bouncing around crystalizes into a real thing.
