Transformational $50M Gift From Haim, Cheryl Saban Helps Launch Academy Museum By Laura Coleman For the first time in its history, in 2019 the capital of filmmaking will have its own dedicated film museum with the creation of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. On Wednesday, while unveiling a first glance of the ongoing construction, the Academy Museum announced that Beverly Hills philanthropists Cheryl and

Haim Saban were donating $50 million toward its creation, which brings the museum’s fundraising effort to nearly 75 percent of its $388 million goal. “It makes perfect sense for us to become fully committed to this endeavor,” said Cheryl Saban after noting that the donation ostensibly seems to detour from their previous philanthropic endeavors (see ‘SABAN DONATION’ page 2)

By Laura Coleman On Tuesday, the Board of Education unanimously voted to approve a 2.17 percent employee raise for the 2017-18 year. According to a district report, that percentage translates to an average compensation increase per employee of $1,877. However, even though the board also voted to raise employee salaries by 3 percent in 2018-19 and an additional 2.81 percent in 2019-20, Beverly Hills Unified School District Chief Administrative Officer LaTanya Kirk-Carter Latham said it was unlikely that the raises approved for the subsequent two years would happen in the absence of dramatic budget changes. The specific increases are tied to a salary formula based on a percentage applied to secured property tax revenue growth, which was approved by the board effective July 1, 2014. BHUSD administrators are currently trying to change this in ongoing contract negotiations with the employee unions – a move the board unanimously supports. Latham previously told the Courier that the district would be unable to afford the salary increases in the absence of additional reductions or reconfiguring the school district’s K8 schools. On Tuesday, at the start of the meeting, Beverly Hills Education Association Executive (BHEA) President Telly Tse addressed the board to share his frustration about the actions of the current administration. “We start this school year with many educators still in recovery from the impact of the

layoff notices issued last year,” he said, noting how the district rescinded more than 20 of the 24 layoff notices it issued last March, in addition to hiring 15 new employees. “Compounding the stress that our members already feel is the massive increase in the cost of our medical coverage and the discussion of reconfiguration and the possible impact that may have on staffing as well as our students.” He then took the district to task for attaching a supplemental letter to the salary increaserelated agenda item detailing the district’s plan to reduce staffing by 50 employees to save money in anticipation of reconfiguration starting next year. “The information... is troublesome because not only is it inconsistent with what we’ve been told, but also because we had to find out on our own with no advance warning from the district,” he said. The district is currently projecting a budget deficit of $3.2 million for this year and cutting 50 employees would “save” the district around $5 million. Latham said it was necessary to provide the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) with a letter detailing its plan to reduce the budget by $5 million in order to get the budget certified and provide employees with their contracted raises. “We have to do something this year,” she said. “This salary increase has us deficit spending at $3.18 million in the current year. If we did not make any decreases in the [next (see ‘SALARY RAISES’ page 2)

which have centered around children’s welfare, healthcare, women’s empowerment, eduction and the Friends of Israel Defense Forces. “As we’ve come to learn more about the Academy museum, we’ve come to learn that it’s all about education,” she said. “It’s about the art and craft of the movie industry, the story telling of the film industry” Designed by Pritzker Prizewinning architect Renzo Piano in concert with the Renzo Piano Building Workship and Gensler, the 300,000-squarefoot museum will feature a major renovation and expansion to the historic 1939 May Company building on Wilshire and Fairfax, as well as a soaring new spherical addition to the north. In recognition of the Sabans’ landmark donation–the largest gift to the Academy Museum Campaign–the May Company building will now be renamed the Saban Building. “If my mother-in-law, God rest her, were here and saw that our name was on the building, she would be so happy,” noted Cheryl Saban, recalling one decades-old memory of shopping at the iconic department store. The architecturally stunning all-white design for the two-building campus will include 50,000 square feet of gallery space, two theaters, project spaces, an outdoor piazza, a rooftop terrace, an education studio, a restaurant and a gift store. A permanent exhibition tracing the evolution of moviemaking is planned for the second and third floors of the museum in the Saban Building while the soaring spherical addition features a 1,000-seat theatre and a terrace topped with a glass dome. BEVERLY HILLS goals: to convey the power of movies; to give viewers a look behind the scenes into how movies are made; and to explore the impact movies have on culture and our lives. “We really see the museum as not just a museum, but really a film campus; a kind of hub that will have all kinds of experiences,” he said. “We really want to create a place that shows the power of movies as an art form.” Founded in 1927 by one time Beverly Hills residents Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, as well as over three dozen silent film stars, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has always had the intention of creating a museum, said John Bailey, president of the Academy. However, it wasn’t until about a decade ago that the trustees seriously sought about making the dream a reality. “The Academy Museum will be the preeminent museum in the world for the art of motion pictures, different from any other museum in cinema,” Bailey predicted. “The Academy Museum will tell the story of people and how movies are made here. Every visitor to this museum will experience the museum not as historical narrative from the outside, but from the inside, as living history.” In addition to its own acquisitions of screenplays, costumes, designs, drawings, films, and other documents and artifacts, the museum will be able to draw from the Academy’s unparalleled collection of motion picture production and history-related objects, which includes more than 12 million photographs, 80,000 screenplays and 50,000 posters. “We should have the world’s most preeminent motion picture museum... and now we have an opportunity to have just that,” said Museum Committee Chair Kathleen Kennedy.

ing action in order to get certified by LACOE, but was troubled by how the district is going about it. “This is not about whether the district takes action,” he told the Courier. “It is about what actions it chooses to make. The district could just as easily propose to make cuts to administrative positions or reduce spending in a multitude of other areas. It is the fact they choose to go directly to the educators and cut there when we have been told otherwise that we have an issue with.” Negotiations between the district and the employees’ unions are ongoing.

Jonathan Enrique Herrera and 65-year-old Larry Eugene Shipp, both of Los Angeles, were arrested on Sept. 15. After a resident reported seeing a man messing with a window at his home in the 600 block of North Roxbury Drive, BHPD officers responded and pulled over a car leaving the scene. Officers were able to determine it was stolen earlier that day from Los Angeles. Herrera – who after investigation, police determined was the prowler – was driving and Shipp was the passenger. Herrera was booked on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, prowling, burglary and possession of narcotics paraphernalia and Shipp was arrested for a no-bail parole warrant. Herrera is scheduled to appear at the Airport Courthouse on Oct 12, BHPD Lt. Elisabeth Albanese said.

Hugh Hefner, the man who founded and built Playboy magazine into an iconic brand, will be laid to rest at Westwood Village Memorial Cemetery in a crypt beside Marilyn Monroe, it was reported Thursday, one day after his death from natural causes at 91. Hefner died peacefully at his Holmby Hills home Wednesday, surrounded by family and friends. After serving in the Army, Hefner worked in the magazine publishing industry and became convinced there was an untapped market for an upscale men’s magazine. Using his furniture as collateral for a loan and borrowing from friends and

Planning Commission to Hold Special Meeting on 9200 Wilshire Monday By Victoria Talbot The Beverly Hills Planning Commission will hold a special meeting Monday evening at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers to discuss modifications to a proposed development at 9200 Wilshire Boulevard. The request is for modifications to a previously approved six-story mixeduse project, currently a vacant lot on the south side of Wilshire between Palm and Maple Drives. The Planning Commission considered this project in July, but the applicants proposal for 90 units and 5,696 square feet of commercial space with three levels of parking was denied.

The project is returning with the previously approved 54 units, and 6,119 square feet of commercial space. When originally approved in 2007, the project had 14,000 square feet of commercial space. Parking will be reduced from three levels to two – underground – but with a surplus of 12 parking spaces over code requirements. There will be additional traffic control devices, as discussed at the last hearing, to discourage turns for cars exiting the project turning towards the residential neighborhoods. Cedars-Sinai Study: Seniors Benefit From Depression Treatment as Much as Younger Patients Do A new Cedars-Sinai study reveals that older adults being treated for depression experience comparable improvements in quality of life and functioning as do younger adults treated for the same condition. In the study, published in the September issue of The Journal Of Clinical Psychiatry, Cedars-Sinai investigators analyzed data from 2,280 patients involved in the National Institute of Mental Health’s largest depression study, called Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression, or STAR*D. “In many health conditions, younger patients experience better recovery than elderly patients. This study shows that patients with major depressive disorder can experience improvement in functioning and quality of life after treatment, no matter their age,” said Cedars-Sinai psychiatrist Waguih William IsHak, MD, senior author of the new study. In the study, co-authors Alexander J. Steiner, PsyD, Itai Danovitch, MD, MBA; and IsHak examined data related to patients’ quality of life. The authors examined the question of whether older patients (age 65 and above) fare as well as younger patients in quality of life and functioning after treatment for depression. Although older patients were shown to be more prone to having more severe depressive episodes that lasted longer, they responded to treatment as well as younger patients did. Major depression is characterized by symptoms such as persistent sadness, lowered activity level and negative thoughts lasting longer than two weeks. More than 18 million Americans—about 7 percent of the adult pop-

ulation—experience a clinically significant episode of depression each year. According to the World Health Organization, depression is the leading cause of disability and third-leading contributor to disease, affecting 350 million people worldwide. Depression among adults over Dr. Waguih IsHak the age of 65 runs as high as 42 percent among the elderly living in institutional housing. Patients in the study were assessed before and after treatment for depression, using standard functional outcome assessment tools such as the Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire — Short Form, and the Work and Social Adjustment Scale. The result: Following treatment, both older adults and adults under 65 experienced similar significant improvements in their quality of life — such as increased energy, improved outlook on life and feeling deeper connections with friends, family and their community. “Many people who are depressed may not realize that there are treatments that can improve their lives, regardless of age,” IsHak said. “That is why Cedars-Sinai instituted a depression screening program by which every admitted patient gets screened for depression so that treatment can be initiated in the hospital.”

EVENING WITH THE MAYOR (Continued from page 1)

trademark BOLD jacket and white jeans, a perfect complement to the florals that overflowed in giant urns framing her on either side. The speech, a comprehensive report on the City, read like a detailed list of personal accomplishments for Bosse that are truly impressive. Showcased were Bosse’s immense creativity and the singleminded purpose that has finally stretched business hours beyond the traditional 6 p.m. “We had a record number of over 700 [guests] register for the event. This is another example as to why Mayor Bosse truly walks the walk,” said Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Todd Johnson. Making Beverly Hills a healthy City was at the top of her list of accomplishments, beginning with B.O.L.D. – Beverly Hills Open Later Days, Bosse’s solution to the fiercely competitive retail environment as brick and mortar stores compete with online shopping. She cited the Westfield Century City Mall investment of $1 billion to upgrade their shopping experience. “The culture of successful retail is changing – and we have to change with it,” she said. “I decided that the best way to do that was for Beverly Hills to go BOLD.” Businesses stayed open later to experience pop-up events such as DJs, live music and even a flash mob.

Lighting and tables on Rodeo Drive encouraged shoppers to loiter longer. “Neon Nights,” the Ed Massey 3-D art installation at the Lily Pond, added another dimension. Walk with the Mayor, Bosse’s hugely popular Monday morning event that attracts about 200 walkers every week, expanded this year to include biking, walking in the evening, doing yoga, and even holding a public meditation with Deepak Chopra that drew 1,000 people. “BOLD added up to a big boost for our business community… which we will continue this year for an even bolder holiday season,” she said. Bosse laid out a plan to include holiday lighting on North and South Beverly Drive, Canon Drive, the Beverly Canon Gardens, South Santa Monica, Dayton Way, Brighton Way and the South East. Beginning in November the stores will be open later and there will be events and music throughout the holiday season. “It is clear… Beverly Hills is alive and well in the day – and at night,” she said. The mayor mentioned the newest businesses, including the new Waldorf Astoria Hotel, and the One Beverly Hills project, as well as plans to open a showroom on Canon Drive soon. Bosse talked about the beautification of the City and the renovations of Beverly Gardens Park with $4 million in funds from the Friends of Beverly Gardens Park and matching funds from the City. Bosse also talked about construction on North Santa Monica Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard.

The Santa Monica Boulevard reconstruction project is on target to be completed in the spring, with the crucial business district portion completed in time for the holiday shopping season. Metro construction on the Purple Line Extension will continue for years, she said. “There is no avoiding the fact that the subway is a huge and disruptive project. The period ahead will be difficult for everyone, but especially for our businesses on or near Wilshire. We are doing everything we can to monitor the construction, minimize the disruption and keep you informed.” Other accomplishments she mentioned included the prohibition of smoking in multi-family dwellings and the Rent Stabilization Ordinance. Finally, she said, “The financial state of the City is excellent. Our reserves are fully funded, and expenditure growth is moderate.” Bosse mentioned the City’s unfunded pension liabilities and said the City Council is aware and proactive, pointing to a set-aside of $15 million towards funding future pensions. “Great entrepreneurship, vision and success are the history of Beverly Hills,” she said. “This is Beverly Hills, the magical, bold, glamorous place where anything can happen.” “I’m proud and honored to represent the Chamber of Commerce,” said Johnson. “Collaborating with our Board of Directors, the City of Beverly Hills, and our members is what truly made this event grand.”

responsibility to make an impact and most importantly a difference in raising awareness, while holding on to hope, that someday the great minds of science can determine a cure.” “Living each day to make a difference is something that truly motivates me,” said Jeff. “Helping elevate the awareness of Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease is now a daily mission. Our second annual Strides For CJD Walk serves two purposes. First, it elevates awareness and secondly, it helps raise much-needed money for research. Most of us at some point in life will be touched by a dreaded neurological disease such as Alzheimer’s, ALS, Parkinson’s or in our case CJD. Taking action is what we can - and must do.” The event consists of a 2.0-mile family walk that takes place on the BHHS track, located at 241 Moreno Dr. on Oct. 14, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Registration is $35. and they’re so inspired.” “For the students, it’s such an affirming and growth experience,” added El Nido Executive Director Liz Herrera. Lupita, who started going to the El Nido center closest to her home in Pacoima when she was 13, said the photography program, which she started doing two years ago, has changed her life dramatically. “Now that I got into photography I want to be a photographer,” she said. “It’s really awesome being here [at Robinson Gardens]. I really like photography because other people get to see what I see.” For more information, visit: https://www.elnidofamilycenters.org.

B E V E R LY H I L L S R E A L E S TAT E Rabinowitz Celebrates Opening of New Campus For Accelerated Charter Elementary School By Victoria Talbot Local realtor Leonard Rabinowitz celebrated the grand opening of The Accelerated Charter Elementary School’s (ACES) new $37 million campus for dual language immersion, marking a milestone for a far-reaching dream to educate atrisk kids that was forged in the wake of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Rabinowitz is director of the Estates Division for The Agency, and frequently partners with agent Jack Friedkin. In the days that followed the riots, Rabinowitz and his partner Carol Little recognized the local community of factory employees who had protected their business – located at the corner of MLK, Jr. Blvd. and Main Street – and kept the building from being burned to the ground. “When we moved after the riots, Carol and I donated the site for the school, a $7 million building. We are very active on the school board. We want to give back to the community.” Rabinowitz said that they saw that, after school closed at 2:30, the local kids were on the street. The playground was locked, and even efforts to fund it to remain open were unsuccessful.

Today, that former factory is the site of an $85 million campus, including an elementary school, a middle school and a high school. It represents a unique public/private partnership between the schools, Los Angeles Unified School District and private and corporate foundations that is a proven model for success. Now, it is also a dual-language school. “Many of our older graduates have succeeded against the odds and graduated from top-notch and Ivy League universities. The diversity of our community, of our board, of our students and our many supporters is what makes us strong,” said founder and CEO Jonathan

Williams. “We have 750 kids,” said Rabinowitz. “We want to change the lives of children and end the cycle of poverty. The only way to do that is through education. We want to teach these kids they can graduate from school and go to college.” Most of the kids that come to the school do not speak English and receive federal meal assistance, he said. The new campus is an EnglishSpanish immersion, where kids will speak one or the other language on different days, to learn proficiency in both. The school has a 90-percent graduation rate, and, he said, 90 percent of graduates go on to higher education. “Over 50 percent went to a fouryear college,” said Rabinowitz, who chaired the capital campaign for the new pre-K through 6th grade campus. Paramount Studios’ former CEO Sherry Lansing, who sat on the capital campaign committee, is agent Jack Friedkin’s stepmother. The school has also enjoyed an enduring partnership with Wells Fargo Bank, the Weingart Foundation and LAUSD, leading to a community partnership that has grown up with the kids that are being educated.

Ryu’s Office Pushes for Stronger Hillside Protections in Proposed HCR By Victoria Talbot LA City Councilmember David Ryu supported residents in the Bird Streets and Laurel Canyon neighborhoods in their efforts to strengthen a proposed Hillside Construction Regulation (HCR) Supplement Use District Zone Change Ordinance at a public hearing on the matter in Van Nuys Wednesday. The Department of City Planning heard public comment on the matter, which is meant to provide extra protections against cumulative construction related impacts of multiple single-family home developments in the hillside areas. The proposed HCR would provide some discretionary review of larger homes; some limits on grading; and would limit hauling and construction hours. But these protections fall short of what is necessary to protect residents, said residents. “Unfortunately for Doheny Estates, the document does not go far enough, fast enough,” said Madeline Nunez of the South Doheny Homeowners Association. “Our community is now at a critical juncture.” The “Bird Streets” and other hillside areas have been subjected to massive development, undermining the neighborhoods, hillsides, wildlife corridors, safety and peaceful enjoyment once so treasured. Councilmember David Ryu, following multiple meetings with representatives of the Laurel Canyon and Bird Street areas, submitted a laundry list of “best practices from surrounding cities,” including Beverly Hills and Bel-Air, which his office would like to incorporate in the HCR. “Specifically, reductions in grading above those outlined in the Baseline Hillside Ordinance that are geographically specific to our Bird Street and Laurel Canyon neighborhoods,” said Senior Planning Deputy for Ryu, Julia Duncan. Her list incorporates many of the protections that are currently found in Bel-Air and Beverly Hills, including many safety features implemented

David Ryu

after the two LAPD officers were struck in separate incidents by runaway construction vehicles in Trousdale. Those protections include secondary braking systems, weight limits on construction vehicles, prohibitions on parking and staging, and several practical safety measures for such streets, that are often steep, curvy and substandard in width. In a statement, the Doheny-Sunset Plaza Neighborhood Association said: “We are supportive of the Hillside Construction Regulation Zone and would like to see it adopted with urgency - and including common sense protections.” “Wednesday’s hearing extinguished any shred of a doubt we may have had about Councilmember Ryu's commitment to working on our issues. He and his staff understand our priorities, and we know that by working with them, we will prevail in our fight to save our hills.” “This is a long overdue change that will provide some protection,” said Jamie Hall, president of the Laurel Canyon Association. “But some of the systemic problems won’t be solved.” He, too advocates for more control, particularly on hauling exports. The City Planning department will now use public comments to draft an ordinance, that will be presented to the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission will then make a recommendation to the Los Angeles City Council regarding the ordinance.

Pianist Jonathan Biss Makes Wallis Debut With Music He Loves Pianist Jonathan Biss is coming to the Wallis and presenting a concert of music by composers “essential to my life,” and a modern composer he champions. The 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 8 concert will include music by Mozart, Beethoven and Schuman, plus Leon Kirchner’s Interlude II. Biss, a member of the faculty of his alma mater the Curtis Institute of Music since 2010, has embarked on a nine-year, nine-disc recording cycle of Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas. That composer, along with Mozart and Schuman, “are almost like my daily bread. It’s rare that one of my concerts

doesn’t include at least one of them; and in this case all three.” For Wallis audiences, Biss will perform the Sonata in D Minor, Op. 31 No. 2 “Tempest,” to be released on the seventh volume of his Beethoven cycle next year. “The amazing thing,” says Biss, “is that all the sonatas are so different. In this sonata the first movement unfolds in such surprising ways, that as well as I know the piece, it still takes turns that shock me.” Biss has been playing Schuman’s “exhilarating” music since he was 8. His Fantasie in C Major, Op. 17 is “pure poetry. Of my three (see ‘BISS,’ page 14)

Cross, Evan Handler, Sheldon Donenberg, Finn Wittrock, Susannah Fielding, and Glenn Howerton who improvised their way through a codensed version of The Tempest. Thomas Dunbar, all the way from Louisville, was the eBAY winning bidder of a once-in-a-lifetime, walk-on role. Under the direction of SCLA founding Artistic Director Ben Donenberg, William Shakespeare’s endearing tragic comedy not only gave the bard’s words additional hilarity through the on-stage delivery and antics of its all-star cast, but wove in six songs from three-time Grammy-winner singer/songwriter Ben Harper whose renditions included Glory And Consequence, Waiting On An Angel, Forever, Don’t Talk About Murder While I’m Eating, Having Wings, and Rock And Roll Is Free. Charles Richard Lester also wowed the crowd of 500 with his theremin instrument. HAPPY BIRTHDAYS–A dual birthday celebration for Helen Grayco

More than 200 turned out last Saturday for the gala double birthday party of Helen Grayco Rosen and her stepson Michael Rosen in the latter’s beautiful Trousdale home. Among those saluting the two were Naomi and Marty Feldman, Joan Ashton and Stanley Black, Bob Vernon and Madeline Gussman, Virginia Plumb and Michael Starkman, Julie Farb, Lisa and Marty Greenberg, Marianne Berman, Donald Kaufman, Marlene Kreedman, Elaine and Pewter Bernard, Shelly and Don Sterling, Lee Barab and Arnie Mills, Ila and Len Krane, Joel Davis and Enid Rom, Robert Rock and Ronnie Kassorla, Barbara and Arthur Lewis, Audrey and Bob Bornstein, Grace Scherer, Alicia Rose, Eleanor and Ray Moscatel, Bernardo Puccio and Orin Kennedy, Gail Dauer, Marlene and Bob Ridgley, Mike and Gloria Franks, Sue Wittner, Stephanie Hibler, Neil Sloan, Jackie Rosenberg, Ed Lozzi, Norby Walters, Sam and Bonnie Strangis, Shana Forman, Sherry Hackett, Linda Schwartz, Bob Coleman, Vic and Jean Werber, Darlene Prigatel and Michael Sokolich, and many more–all having a ball! Family was well represented with Helen’s daughter Gina and son Spike Jones with Glenna Kroenert, plus her neices and their husbands Judy and Dr. Jay Sher; Cindy and Bob Williams with their son R. J. Williams, producer of Young Hollywood. Mike was represented by his son Scott Rosen with his wife Liz; and daughter Kathy with her husband Rick Simpson. ****** Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks hosted The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles (www.ShakespeareCenter.org) 27th “Simply Shakespeare” benefit at UCLA’s Freud Playhouse. All proceeds support the SCLA and its artsbased employment programs for chronically unemployed veterans and urban youth which provide award-winning professional productions supported by a veteran workforce. Another highlight was the presentation of the inaugural Bright Future Award to U.S. Army veteran Ariel Bell, coordinator of the SCLA Veterans in Art Programs. The award was presented by Everett Orrick, CEO of BBVA Compass, a financial instituttion operating 651 nationwide branches, 61 of which are located in California

With all the renovation and construction occurring in downtown Palm Springs lately, it’s often hard to believe that there is any of the old Palm Springs left. Fortunately, we were discouraged from such thoughts when Beverly Hills jeweler to the stars, Kevin Parker, hosted a birthday brunch for me at the iconic Mediterranean restaurant, Le Vallauris. We were also surprised to learn that restaurateur Paul Bruggemans has been Frances Allen with bringing style, sophisKevin Parker tication and gourmet cuisine to the Coachella Valley for 44 years. He has, and still does. Need we say more? ****** Would you pay upwards of $329 for a ticket to a three-day music concert? You would if you were a fan of country music and the event was a three-day extravaganza of country music known internationally as Coachella – the concert’s name, not the venue. In fact, $329 per ticket is just for the lowest price general admission ticket. Prices for a seat in the reserved seating section, behind the “pit” and in front of the main stage, will set country music lovers back $1,199 … if you can get them. Since its inception 12 years ago, Coachella has risen to what is now considered the largest country festival of its kind, with attendance for this year’s spring event drawing nearly a quarter-million attendees. The two biggest draws for next year’s concert–to be held April 27-29–are Florida Georgia Line, a band with some of the biggest country hits of all time: plus Garth Brooks, America’s best-selling album champion. Tickets, with the exception of general admission, were sold out within days. So, if you want to go you’ll have to call in a favor or two. ****** The Rancho Mirage Writers Festival Foundation is giving a gift to the Coachella valley in keeping with its highly acclaimed Writer’s Festival. They have created a new free series, called The Best Movies from Books, created by Peter Bart, journalist and film producer. During his 18 years as a film executive, Bart acquired the rights to such best sellers as The Godfather, Rosemary’s Baby and Love Story and now Bart is sharing them with the Coachella Valley. The first screening will be Thursday, Nov. 16 at 3:30 p.m. at the Rancho Mirage Public Library. The movie will be Patton. There will be a discussion after the screening accompanied by wine and cheese.

CITY OF BEVERLY HILLS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS 345 FOOTHILL ROAD BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA 90210 REQUEST FOR PREQUALIFICATION OF BIDDERS AND PREQUALIFICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR SINGLE PROJECT 17-45: BEVERLY HILLS FIBER SYSTEM PROJECT Notice is hereby given that the City of Beverly Hills (“CITY”) has determined that all bidders for the Service Installation and Network Maintenance of the Beverly Hills Fiber System (“Project”) must be pre-qualified prior to submitting a bid on that Project. This prequalification is valid for 2.5 years and for a single project. It is mandatory that all Contractors who intend to submit a bid, fully complete the prequalification questionnaire, provide all materials requested herein, and be approved by the CITY to be on the final qualified Bidders list. No bid will be accepted from a Contractor that has failed to comply with these requirements. If two or more business entities submit a bid as part of a Joint Venture, or expect to submit a bid as part of a Joint Venture, each entity within the Joint Venture must be separately qualified to bid. The last date to submit a fully completed questionnaire is 2:00 PM Monday, October 16, 2017. Contractors are encouraged to submit prequalification packages as soon as possible, so that they may be notified of omissions of information to be remedied or of their prequalification status in advance of the prequalification deadline for this Project. Answers to questions contained in the attached questionnaire are required. The CITY will use these documents as the basis of rating Contractors with respect to whether each Contractor is qualified to bid on the Project, and reserves the right to check other sources available. The CITY’s decision will be based on objective evaluation criteria. The CITY reserves the right to adjust, increase, limit, suspend or rescind the prequalification rating based on subsequently learned information. Contractors whose rating changes sufficiently to disqualify them will be notified, and given an opportunity for a hearing consistent with the hearing procedures described below for appealing a prequalification rating. While it is the intent of the prequalification questionnaire and documents required therewith to assist the CITY in determining bidder responsibility prior to bid and to aid the CITY in selecting the lowest responsible bidder, neither the fact of prequalification, nor any prequalification rating, will preclude the CITY from a post-bid consideration and determination of whether a bidder has the quality, fitness, capacity and experience to satisfactorily perform the proposed work, and has demonstrated the requisite trustworthiness. The prequalification packages should be submitted under seal to the Office of the City Clerk, City of Beverly Hills, 455 North Rexford Drive, Room 290, Beverly Hills, CA 90210. The following should be clearly marked on the outside of the package “CONFIDENTIAL PREQUALIFICATION STATEMENT FOR THE SERVICE INSTALLATION AND NETWORK MAINTENANCE OF THE BEVERLY HILLS FIBER SYSTEM, PROJECT 17-45” The prequalification packages submitted by Contractors are not public records and are not open to public inspection. All information provided will be kept confidential to the extent permitted by law. However, the contents may be disclosed to third parties for purpose of verification, or investigation of substantial allegations, or in an appeal hearing. State law requires that the names of contractors applying for prequalification status shall be public records subject to disclosure, and the first page of the questionnaire will be used for that purpose.

Each questionnaire must be signed under penalty of perjury in the manner designated at the end of the form, by an individual who has the legal authority to bind the Contractor on whose behalf that person is signing. If any information provided by a Contractor becomes inaccurate, the Contractor must immediately notify the CITY and provide updated accurate information in writing, under penalty of perjury. The CITY reserves the right to waive minor irregularities and omissions in the information contained in the prequalification application submitted, and to make all final determinations. The CITY may also determine at any time that the prequalification process will be suspended for the Project and the Project will be bid without prequalification. Contractors may submit prequalification packages during regular working hours on any day that the offices of the CITY are open. Contractors who submit a complete prequalification package will be notified of their qualification status no later than ten business days after submission of the information. The CITY may refuse to grant prequalification where the requested information and materials are not provided by the due date indicated above. There is no appeal from a refusal for an incomplete or late application, but re-application for a later project is permitted. Neither the closing time for submitting prequalification packages for this Project will be changed in order to accommodate supplementation of incomplete submissions, or late submissions, unless requested by the CITY in its sole discretion. In addition to a contractor’s failure to be pre-qualified pursuant to the scoring system set forth in the prequalification package, a contractor may be found not prequalified for either omission of or falsification of, any requested information. Where a timely and completed application results in a rating below that necessary to pre-qualify, an appeal can be made by the unsuccessful Contractor. An appeal is begun by the Contractor delivering notice to the CITY of its appeal of the decision with respect to its prequalification rating, no later than two business days following notification that it is not pre-qualified. The notice of appeal shall include an address where the Contractor wishes to receive notice of the appeal hearing. Without a timely appeal, the Contractor waives any and all rights to challenge the decision of the CITY, whether by administrative process, judicial process or any other legal process or proceeding. If the Contractor gives the required notice of appeal, a hearing shall be conducted no earlier than five business days after the CITY’s receipt of the notice of appeal and not later than five business days prior to the date of the Notice Inviting Bids for this Project. Prior to the hearing, the Contractor shall, in writing, be advised of the basis for the City’s pre-qualification determination. The hearing shall be conducted by a panel consisting of three members of the Department of Public Works senior management staff (the “Appeals Panel”). The Appeals Panel shall consider any evidence presented by the Contractor, whether or not the evidence is presented in compliance with formal rules of evidence. The Contractor will be given the opportunity to present evidence, information and arguments as to why the Contractor believes it should be pre-qualified. Within one day after the conclusion of the hearing, the Appeals Panel will render a written determination as to whether the Contractor is prequalified. It is the intention of the CITY that the date for the submission and opening of bids will not be delayed or postponed to allow for completion of an appeal process. Beverly Hills Has A New Theme Song, Thanks To 57-Year Resident Angel Castelo By Laura Coleman Longtime Beverly Hills resident Angel Castelo, a poet, dancer and jeweler, was certain that his beloved City was missing just one thing–a theme song. To that end, he took it upon himself to do something about it. “For a poet, the inspiration can come from a woman or a city,” Castelo says. “Living here 57 years, I’ve found that Beverly Hills is a garden full of natural flowers that inspire me.” The result of that inspiration is a poem he crafted called “Beverly Hills Tomorrow.” Lines like “The waters of your

fountains chase away all troubles” and “An idyllic garden bathed in sunshine, in summer or winter, it is the desired haven” hearken to the peaceful bliss that pervades elements of this small town with a big reputation. Once Castelo was satisfied the poem gave voice to the joy of Beverly Hills, he commissioned Ismael Galleg to compose the music and Claudio Montalban to sing the verses. He then paid to have the song reproduced 1,000 times with the intention of selling the song to visitors and residents. “This work was stimulated by the attraction that the world

feels for a city and its enchantments as a model of an idealized life,” Castelo says. “I am a part of Beverly Hills.”

Swedish American Chamber Of Commerce To Honor Oscar Winner Linus Sandgren By Victoria Talbot Oscar-winning Swedish Cinematographer Linus Sandgren (La La Land) will receive the Eliason Merit Award (EMA) from the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce at an exclusive red carpet event in Los Angeles on Nov. 11. In the spirit of furthering Swedish-American relations, the award is given to individuals who have contributed to strengthening the relations between the U.S.A. and Sweden in the areas of commerce, culture, science and arts. Sandgren is being recognized for successfully, “raising Sweden’s profile within the arts and the entertainment industry and for his significant contributions in strengthening SwedishAmerican relations during his successful career,” according to a press release on the event. His career began in 1990, both in America and Sweden with his most notable projects, prior to La La Land, being his collaboration with David O

number of successful global businesses, including nightclubs. Although best known for its centerfolds of nude women, Playboy has also published fiction by such writers as Ray Bradbury, Charles Beaumont, John Updike, Ian Fleming, Joseph Heller, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid's Tale, Jack Kerouac and Kurt Vonnegut. Hefner staged the annual Playboy Jazz Festival at the

Russell on American Hustle and Joy and with Gus Van Sant on Promised Land. Sandgren is the winner of the BAFTA Award, the Hollywood Film Award and the Critics Choice Award, as well. Bengt S. Olin, the founder of the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce of L.A., initiated the Eliason Merit Award in 1988 in honor of the late Sven A. Eliason, who, through his great contributions to many Swedish-American causes, exemplified the requirements for this award.

This year marks the award’s 30th anniversary, which has previously honored such individuals as Dolph Lungren, Anine Bing, Tove Lo, Joel Kinnaman and Steve Angello. The event is regularly attended by Swedish/Scandinavian and American celebrities. Last month, the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce held a joint event with the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce in Los Angeles.

Hollywood Bowl since 1979. Hefner and Playboy made Beverly Hills its home base, setting up Playboy’s headquarters at 9346 Civic Center Dr. "My father lived an exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer and a leading voice behind some of the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom," said Hefner's son Cooper, the chief creative officer of Playboy Enterprises. Other survivors include his wife, Crystal, daughter Christie, the CEO of Playboy Enterprises

for more than 20 years, and sons David and Marston. Billionaire businessman Daren Metropoulos announced in August 2016 that escrow has closed on his $100 million purchase of The Playboy Mansion. The deal allowed Hefner to continue living at the mansion for the rest of his life. Metropoulos said last year that after Hefner's death he would connect. Playboy Enterprises in 1971 acquired the 20,000square-foot mansion, which was built in 1927. –– City News Service

Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Sept. 29). Things ramp up slowly, and then good fortune rains on your life. Yours is the lofty ambition, the unreasonable expectation and the outrageous dream that somehow comes true. Go on and be daring, but also know that it's the grounded people around you who will help you work your practical magic. Taurus and Capricorn adore you. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). If you live somewhere that has a library, a public gym, a hiking trail, a field, a church or another feature that's public and free then it's something to take advantage of today. People need you, and you need people. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). The history of a place matters. Whether it's a happy story or a shameful one, it's good to know how it was so that when you change it (and you will) you can appreciate the significance of the change. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Your willingness to listen deeply to someone's (perhaps delusional) side of the story will help you find peace. This isn't about forgiveness but about facilitating your own healing and passage to better times. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). When you lose your cell connection it's safe to blame outside interference. Other personal connections are the same today. Don't take anything personally or assume any motive. Just call again. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You sense tension and can head off conflict before it happens. Distraction is your best tool. You're great at creating diversions to give people something useful to do. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). When people are happy they bring their best selves to the party. This is what you bring out in people as you encourage and acknowledge their better qualities. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). There are things you would throw away if only you were sure that no one else would pick them up and use them. Hold on there. You're not finished with this work, just taking a break. Look at your tools and resources differently. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). Looking fantastic isn't always feeling fantastic. You're aware of those who put on a smile even though they are in pain, because you've been there too. Your compassion will make all of the difference to someone today. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). The characters in the story feel something, and so do you when you participate in the story in any way... even as an innocent bystander (which will be your recommended role in today's drama). CANCER (June 22-July 22). You'll move forward with a venture that has captured your curiosity. Keep your options open as you go, though, because this isn't what it seems. There's a slippery slope ahead. Hold tight to the handrail. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). People who are direct and clear communicators will get most of your attention and business now. Do you sense you should be taking notes? Absorbing the ways of masterful communicators will increase your good fortune later. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Be willing to put down your phone and talk to real people in real time. You'll get into interesting (if seemingly pointless) conversations that will later be something you can draw from for energy and inspiration.
