The Wallis Seeks Memorabilia, Stories Of The Historic Beverly Hills Post Office

By Laura Coleman In anticipation of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts opening next month, the arts venue this week launched a campaign to collect the written and remembered history of the complex's centerpiece building, the Beverly Hills Post Office.

The “Post About the Post Office” campaign, to be presented in a future display, aims to showcase the many significant moments that passed through the grand halls of the historic 1934 terracotta building on North Crescent NEW LIFE—The historic Beverly Hills Post Office, circa (see ‘POST OFFICE,’ page 24)

City Council Moves Forward In Efforts To Create Lobbyist Transparency

By Victoria Talbot The Sunshine Task Force (STF), tasked by Mayor John Mirisch with creating more transparency in City government, presented a proposed draft Lobbyist Registration Form at Tuesday’s City Council meet-

ing.

The form’s objective is to gather more information about lobbyists; their clients and their clients’ intended outcomes.

A revised Lobbyist Registration Form is a key element of the STF initiative. The current

registration form “is not robust,” said Fred Fenster, task force member. That form, available online, asks for the advocate’s contact information, the identity of the client and a “general description” of legislation the (see ‘TRANSPARENCY,’ page 26)

Community Development Going Paperless

By Victoria Talbot Electronic agendas may soon replace paper agenda packets for commissioners in Community Development as part of the City’s effort to streamline government, a move that would end the production and distibution of

cumbersome paper packets to all 25 commissioners in the department.

The Community Development Department includes Planning, Architectural, Design Review, Cultural Heritage and Transportation Commissions.

The move to paperless

means agendas will be electronically distributed using iLegislate, a mobile agenda application that enables governments to upload meeting agendas and supporting documents on the web, using iPads equipped with the application.

City Recognizes Summer Reading Club Students

Beverly Hills Police Department Use Technology To Catch Carjacker

By Victoria Talbot A BHPD officer on routine patrol in a vehicle equipped with an Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) identified a 2000 Nissan Altima used in a robbery in the Rampart area. The vehicle was discovered in the Wilshire-

Robertson area.

The suspects were considered armed and dangerous. Officers followed the vehicle until back-up arrived and subsequently conducted a high risk stop in the area of San Vicent and Wilshire. Two suspects were arrested.

Board Prepares To Go After $45 Million For School-Building Projects

By Laura Coleman The Board of Education moved one step closer to securing $45 million in Measure E bond sales at Tuesday night’s meeting when it told staff to prepare a resolution to move forward. Boardmembers Brian Goldberg and Lewis Hall did

Artistic director Michael Ritchie, escorting actress wife Kate Burton, lauded these CTG fundraising efforts that support indoctrinating local schoolchildren into the uplifting and exciting life of theater.

When she was treated to a showbiz weekend in the Big Apple by Yvonne Bell, the CTG’s director of development, and where she was smitten by Joe Iconis’ troupe of young musicians performing in the midtown rathskeller nightclub, 54 Below.

St. John’s Health Center To Host Community Open House And Health Fair St. John’s Health Center has completed the construction of its state-of the-art facility after a 20-year journey, following the 1994 Northridge earthquake. To celebrate, the hospital is welcoming the community to the grand opening of its new Mullin Plaza, from noon-4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, with a “Community Open House and Health Fair.”

The event will feature free screenings, giveaways, demonstrations, vital health information, massages and tours of the OR, catheterization lab, women’s health department, chapel and VIP Caritas suites. Children will enjoy complementary face painting, arts and crafts and snacks.

Along with booths about services and departments at St. John’s, the fair will also include tables hosted by community groups including the Benjamin Center, YWCA Santa Monica/Westside, the Arthritis Foundation, WISE & Healthy Aging, Meals on Wheels West and the Ocean Park Community Center (OPCC).

AWARD TO HONOR RIMOIN’S LEGACY— “Inspiring Excellence, A Tribute to the Life and Legacy of David L. “Natural killer cells are very attractive targets for immunotherapy because they are able to kill tumor cells,” said SiYi Chen, M.D., Ph.D., professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at the Keck School and senior author of the study. “While scientists all around the world are working on developing new drugs using NK cells, none of the drugs in development focuses on epigenetic regulation of the cells.

Our study describes how an epigenetic process involving the enzyme MYSM1 plays a critical role in the development of natural killer cells.”

Chen also is a faculty member of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Epigenetics involve biochemical changes in the body that directly affect DNA, turning some genes on and turning others off. MYSM1 is an enzyme in the body’s immune system that turns genes on and off by modifying proteins called histones embedded in DNA. Through a series of experiments in mice, Chen and his colleagues demonstrate that MYSM1 is required for natural killer cells to mature and function properly.

“We found that MYSM1 creates access to proteins that enhance gene transcription and, ultimately, the maturation of natural killer cells themselves,” said Vijayalakshmi Nandakumar, a Ph.D. student at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and the study’s first author. Ream more at www.bhcourier.com

But more than these characteristics, her strength and resourcefulness to protect the district from the tunnels underneath Beverly Hills High School has brought her national attention. She has stood firm despite massive abuse she has suffered from standing against the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Her colleagues credit her with the key role in preserving our only high school. Her knowledge of national affairs has played a major role in the fact that, today, the federal government has appropriated not one penny to complete that subway under our high school The recent hiring of the law firm of former U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman is a stroke of genius that outflanks the huge lobbying interests behind Metro. Of course, it could only happen because Lieberman believes in our cause but it was Korbatov who spearheaded retaining him.

Let there be no doubt – the two tunnels under the high school threaten the very existence of our district. No matter how many political cronies of the big developers slow slurs at this newspaper or get other publications to spread false information, if those tunnels go under our high school we cannot build anything above it without spending more money than we can possibly get. Sen. Lieberman was quite succinct in the statement he gave to The Courier. His view and that of others agree: digging subway tunnels barely underneath a public school is nuts.

In the realm of actual education of our children, she became the “third vote” four years ago for reforming the district.

Her vote, joining Brian David Goldberg’s and then-member Steven Fenton’s, stopped the policies of trying to hide the problems of the district. Principals were replaced. The top public school superintendent in the state was recruited. The Board ever since have taken head-on the problems we face.

Progress has sometimes been rapid; at other times frustratingly slow. But at all times there is progress.

Her detractors seem to be able to point only to the “legal fees” our board have incurred in dealing with district problems. The Courier commends her and the board for choosing top-quality lawyers rather than the cut-raters that seem to infest education. We believe the most expensive lawyer you can hire is a mediocre one. The record speaks for itself. By taking the high road, the Board of Education has seen victory after victory funded largely with proceeds from a major case settlement. How do you criticize spending on lawyers when the lawyers get you back more than you paid? You never see that pointed out by her detractors, which only points out the weakness of their criticisms.

It’s like complaining that the winning general used too many bullets in victory.

As for the bond acceleration problem she and her colleagues inherited, The Courier believes this board has fashioned the best compromise available. Taking it back to the voters, as Korbatov supports, is the best course. It’s not exactly “making lemonade from lemons,” but at least the recipe is palatable.

Maple Center Seeks New Home

By Victoria Talbot The Maple Counseling Center CEO Marcy Kaplan told the Beverly Hills City Council Tuesday that TMCC is seeking a new home and may be forced to relocate outside Beverly Hills.

TMCC has been looking for a few months, said Kaplan. “Our lease is up. It looks unlikely we will be able to reach a long term agreement. There is space available locally but its about being able to find something that’s in my budget,“ she explained.

“I want the council to know that whatever happens, we’ll continue to provide outstanding service to residents and employees of the City. We’re really an institution of this community.”

TMCC is seeking a 10,000-squarefoot space for its out-patient mental health services. The center serves the community, the BHUSD and City employees, residents and businesses. Ka-

plan estimates there are 800 visits to TMCC a week from the community. The center also serves adjacent communities, from West Hollywood to the valley.

If the Center cannot find a space inside the City, Kaplan said they will look in adjacent areas.

Since their inception in 1972, TMCC has received grant support from the BHUSD and the City of Beverly Hills Recently, TMCC received a grant of $200,000 to help cover relocation costs or physical space improvements, going forward. The funds were part of a $2 million grant to health clinics and firstresponder agencies throughout Los Angeles, as health clinics prepare for challenges associated with implementation of the Affordable Care Act. The Maple Center provides care on a sliding scale based on income.

Two Network Shows Return With Strong Openings With cable and Netflix upstaging the networks at the Emmy’s, some network shows proved they still have it.

• Monday was the season nine premiere of CBS’ hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother with the much-anticipated introduction of “the mother,” played by Cristin Milioti (The Sopranos).

The whole premise of the show is Ted’s (Josh Radnor) search for his lady love, as he recounts those events to his two children.

Supporting cast includes his friends Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), Marshall (Jason Segel), Lily (Alyson Hannigan), and Robin (Cobie Smulders). The

appearance of the elusive “Mother” drew an estimated 9.4 million U.S. viewers.

• ABC’s Castle launched its sixth season with heroine detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) accepting beaux Richard Castle’s (Nathan Fillion) marriage proposal. That was a real surprise. All the clues from last season pointed to a “no.” But can they make it work (if they ever actually tie the knot)?

Castle proved that writers— meaning the Castle character— are nosy (did I say nosy? I meant curious). Puppy-dog loyal Castle just had to poke that nose into Beckett’s new job, which is a

major classified case she really cannot tell him about (she works for the U.S. attorney general’s office in D.C.). Of course Castle puts Beckett into a tight place when he gets in trouble.

Show writers leave viewers hanging on the cliff when Castle finds himself in a particularly sticky snafu. Is Castle doomed?

Is Nathan Fillion’s personal absence from the set any indication? Is season #6 a short-run deal? Doubtful, but no one would want to face what Castle faces now.

Don Jon— ‘Longest Hour And A Half In Film History’ Growing up, pornography was sneaking a look at Jane Russell’s huge sign over Times Square heralding her new movie The Outlaw showing a bit of cleavage that was responsible for the large grosses of the Howard Hughes film. At the time, the movie, much to Hughes’ delight and Russell’s fully developed chest, was roundly criticized by the Hollywood Production Code, the church, women’s organizations, housewives and civic minded people.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has written, produced and stars in Don Jon the longest hour and a half film in cinematic history.

The amazing Gordon-Levitt has starred in many wonderful films 500 Days Of Summer and

Jerry Cutler On Film 50/50 among them. A great talent, he decided to tell the story of a young man addicted to pornography that he finds more fulfilling than having actual sex.

The nuances and physical gyrations obscured, thankfully, behind a desk, are repeated over and over again as are his encounters real and computer driven.

He feels that his addiction will pass once he finds the girl of his dreams. At a bar he spots Scarlett Johansson, a nice Catholic girl with a Jewish last name, Sugarman. She is the girl of his dreams and many others I should think. Like his other conquests, she falls for him although his buff character acts

and looks like a dork (remember, he wrote the screenplay).

Don Jon eventually takes her home to meet his overly anxious mother and his lascivious, macho father, a terrific Tony Danza who asks Don if her breasts are real.

Following the guidelines of any screenplay, a conflict with their relationship gives an opportunity of an older woman, Julianne Moore, to effect a triangle.

Today, unfortunately, there won’t be any organization or religious institution issuing a complaint for the lack of decency so obviously missing from today’s wanton use of commercial pornography…just a lone plea to Hollywood from this reviewer to give more credence to morality over money.

Last Friday, the district received a letter from the DA’s public integrity division requesting Paysinger’s Conflict of Interest disclosure forms from 2008 to the present in “conducting an investigation.”

Those forms are public records.

The Courier reviewed those statements weeks ago. Paysinger did not list any possible conflicts.

Multiple sources have

told The Courier they believe the DA investigation blossomed from a personal connection between a member of the District Attorney's staff.

These sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, believe that the overture leading to the complaint came from a person critical of Paysinger's dismissal, or "non-renewal," of part-time track coach Jeff Fisher. Fisher’s departure was endorsed and ratified by District Superintendent Gary Woods

and the Board of Education.

Last month, the district launched its own investigation into Paysinger’s involvement with the Sports Academy during his time as principal. The district retained outside counsel to review issues of financial conflict of Interest, disclosures and related matters. In 1997, Paysinger, Howard Edelman and Jason Newman agreed to organize and run Beverly Hills Sports Academy at the high school during the summer after

Councilmembers expressed a history of frustration on this issue, and a perception that abuse of placards is widespread. But a matrix of patterns of placard abuse indicates that, only about three percent of observed placards are lost, stolen or expired.

Placard “mismatch,” when the user is not the identified owner, is difficult to enforce. An officer or a other agent must wait until the driver returns to the vehicle to issue a citation.

Violations result in a $500 fee and confiscation of the placard.

Forgery, falsified applications and misprescribed placards are discovered by investigation and may result in criminal charges.

The program would supplement handicapped parking enforcement efforts.

The council asked the task force to clarify “lobbyist,” as distinct from a neighbor coming to council in support of a remodel on a neighbor’s home. “That business of paid or not paid. . .

If I take my neighbor to dinner, and over dinner we discuss my remodel, is that a lobbyist,” asked Gold.

The City Council asked that the form be revised to reflect their concerns, including a definition of “paid,” and a possible threshold for remuneration, a six-month review of the policy, a universal form that does not exclude charities and the identification of residents and nonresidents. The task force will work with City Attorney Larry Wiener to determine if municipal codes may require modification reflect the goals of transparency.

As Dr. Wyatt explains: “Since my acquittal in June, not one national broadcast media venue has given me a chance to clear my name with the public.”

He continued: “LAPD investigators gathered their ‘socalled evidence’ from a camera stolen from my office, but never ventured into my examining room to see the alleged crime scene. They made up their minds I was guilty and doggedly pursued a fabricated trail which led to handcuffing me and throwing me in jail.”

His attorney Kevin Winston McKesson says: “The jury saw through the prosecution's case. Dr. Wyatt was being penalized for spending too much time with his patients, for being diligent and taking—what they considered 'too many' photographs. He practices cuttingedge plastic surgery. His camera is his stethoscope.”

Regarding the question as to why these women would have targeted Dr. Wyatt, many conjecture his frequent guest appearances on national TV shows such as The Doctors and ABC's 20/20–where he was heralded as one the nation's top leading experts in “fat transfer” procedures–this high public profile could easily have positioned him as a target for profitdriven motivations.

As Dr. Wyatt surmises: “You spend all your life carefully building a career and reputation, and they can take it all away from you in a matter of a few minutes. Plastic surgery has long been villainized, now it's being criminalized.”

WHY THE WORLD CHANGED IN THE ‘80s The saying about politics, “follow the money,” has never been more true than it is today.

But let’s look at the world 25-years ago.

The 1980’s began with the Soviet Union ascendant. Its troops and surrogates roamed the world with impunity. The Communist power had client regimes in Africa, Central America, Asia, growing insurgencies in South America. Western Europe was cowering in the face of threats of Warsaw Pact planes, tanks, missiles and troops. Eastern Europe and the Baltic States were prisoners of Moscow.

The United States was hung over from the retreat from Vietnam and suffering from the “malaise” we attribute to then-President Jimmy Carter. Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini held our U.S. Embassy workers hostage pretty much as portrayed in Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning Argo. Our helicopters crashed in the desert. Our Navy ships could not leave port for lack of spare parts and sailors. Our airplanes could not fly because they were not maintained. Inflation raged.

Interest rates were around 20 percent or higher.

In short, we were in bad shape.

Ronald Reagan won the 1980 presidential election and brought with him a Republicancontrolled Senate. He pushed through major tax reductions, lifted restrictions on business, began a huge arms build-up to counter the Soviets, and told us that he “trusted the American people” to fix things. His solution was much less government, not more. He won the battles and the war. The Soviet Union disappeared. We enjoyed decades of prosperity. His one shortcoming, so say his critics, is that he spent more than the government took in—deficit spending.

The United States was able to pay for the tax cuts, arms building, and the huge increase in social spending Democrats demanded in return for rebuilding our military. How? We borrowed.

But at the time the national debt was relatively small compared to our nation’s ability to pay.

Reagan’s “investments” in the people paid off with massive growth in our economy. Had Congress – controlled by the Democrats – not spent like crazy, he would have left a nation enjoying surpluses. Reagan borrowed to build. The people responded and built frenetically.

The progress and prosperity were amazing.

The bottom line was that in the 1980’s we could afford what the nation did. Today that is not true.

Democrat President Barack Obama, who continued the outrageous spending policies of his Republican predecessor George W. Bush, has put the nation into spending light speed. Our Treasury Department is literally just printing money. That’s why everything is costing more. It’s going to get worse.

Nothing Obama has enacted—not taxes, environmental regulation, health care—will work.

The only result will be economic devastation and deprivation. Look at the number of Americans on food stamps, disability payments, out of work, not looking for work, massive student loan debt. That’s the Obama legacy.

Internationally, we cannot even get the Syrian dictator to speak to us. Russia, which really has little going for it, now dominates Middle Eastern foreign affairs like it has not done in decades. Our federal, state and local tax collections are at an all time high but the deficit grows and grows. Nothing proposed by Obama will make this better —every policy of the Obama Administration promises only worse outcomes.

This stuff matters.

Internationally we are relegated to irrelevancy. You think the People’s Republic of China with its massive new military and hundreds of missiles doesn’t notice?

Domestically, the truth about Obamacare is now coming out. Massive premium hikes, vast chunks of the American people losing their healthcare entirely, reduced coverage and reduced services.

All of this was predictable and predicted. Socialism—which is what this is—does not work.

It always leads to bankruptcy and disruption.

We may have enough money to forestall bankruptcy, but this path will not lead us to prosperity. It leads to poverty.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR As you probably already know, I am always trying to point out noise and safety concerns for all of us in our City.

Well, yesterday I was asked by a group on Segways to move off the sidewalk so that they can pass. I proceeded to call the police and my understanding is that Dr. Julien Gold had brought up the issue on the use of Segways and our City Council took a “watch and see” position. (Please note that Nancy Krasne was not a member of the council on that “decision.”)

I imagine this will take place after the first injury occurs, although nothing was done after a bicycle hit a pedestrian in our business district.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand how harmful those vehicles can be. For those who care, there is enough information on the internet regarding these motorized devices.

Many cities have kicked them off their sidewalks. Also, they tour our private residential streets.

It is clear to me that as long as the council, city attorneys, et al have as their major concerns the increase in population crowding our beautiful City and having pictures taken and names engraved on plaques, then this issue takes a back bench.

Pablo Nankin, M.D. ****** Rabbi Pressman, in his weekly observations, witnesses the enduring hostility among people and then asks himself: “Why?” Does he not recognize or refuse to see the sad truth behind all the killings taking place in too many parts of this world and which have been happening the last thousands of years. Crusades, Inquisition, Holocaust. Armenian genocide, Biafra, Darfur, Iran, Iraq, etc.

Man-made religions, created solely for mass indoctrination and manipulation of the masses, and which have as their great attraction, this human fallacy of superiority, is the simple answer to his question. Thus, all this killing can be done with impunity and tax free.

Then he neglects to mention the great tragedy taking place in Western Europe,which eventually may turn out to be another headline in history.

This writer, also coming to the last years of his life, hopes for a better world in the future.
