Lost, Scared Dog Roams City; Mayor Of No Help

By Courier Staff A beautiful but skittish, recently-rescued Akita mix is currently roaming the streets of Beverly Hills – and the adopted parents frantically seeking help.

They certainly didn’t find any from City Hall or the Mayor’s Office.

Cleo went missing about five weeks ago while walking with her owners, prominent realtors Joy and Craig Hudson.

The family was walking near its home at 121 N. Doheny Dr. and heading south to Wilshire when a loud noise

scared Cleo and sent her running off into the night.

Joy Hudson told The Courier that shortly after, the couple put ‘lost dog’ fliers up all around its neighborhood. Hudson said fliers went up on neighborhoods like Gregory, Peck, Camden, Bedford, Roxbury and Linden.

The family received more than 30 calls for sightings, but was never able to track down Cleo.

A former competitive horseback rider, Tsircou, who turns 40 this month, said she hoped by letting the cameras into a her life she was able to show the world how a “real” mother from the nation’s most prestigious zip code raises a child. Her son, Xander, celebrated his first birthday in August.

September Marks National Service Dog Month

By Laura Coleman Disabled Vietnam veteran Jim Hogan had a life change when seven-and-a-half years ago the Veteran’s Administration provided the blind Canyon Country resident with a yellow Labrador guide dog named Atticus.

“He has definitely changed my life,” Hogan told The Courier. “He is part of the family.”

According to executives, she also will act as the brand’s muse and a full-blown collaborator. Zegna Taps Stefano Pilati Ermenegildo Zegna has hired Italian designer Stefano Pilati, formerly of YSL, to rev up its core men's line and runway show, plus re-invent or ignite its Agnona women's wear franchise.

Zegna said Pilati would start Jan. 1 as creative director of Agnona, and head of design at Ermenegildo Zegna, with responsibility for that brand’s fashion show as well as for the Ermenegildo Zegna Couture collection. The latter line includes sartorial, hand-stitched suits in precious fabrics like cashmere and vicuna with luxurious details like mother of pearl buttons.

It is understood Pilati will show his first men’s collections for Zegna next June, in tandem with a cruise line for Agnona, founded in 1953 and controlled by Zegna since 1999.

The appointment signals that Zegna is ready to pump up its fashion credentials with a well-known and seasoned talent, known for his suave personal style, press appeal, influential silhouettes, and luxury credentials.

At the end of 2011, Zegna had 557 stores worldwide, of which 311 are fully owned.

Christian Louboutin Wins Over YSL A New York federal court of appeals gave Christian Louboutin SA an early Fashion Week surprise. The court said Louboutin is entitled to trademark protection for its red-sole shoes, except when the shoe itself is red.

That distinction gives Louboutin the right to protect its red-sole shoe against Yves Saint Laurent SA, which it sued last year in New York federal court, claiming its rival violated the red-sole trademark that it obtained in 2008 when YSL sold an all-red pump.

Louboutin asked the court to stop the sale of the YSL pump while the case was under review by the court of appeals. But last August, a federal court judge denied that request and instead questioned the validity of Louboutin trademark altogether.

Lawyers for Louboutin appealed that judge’s decision that same month.

Now a year later, the court of appeals has, in a sense, narrowed the scope of the case to just center on all-red pumps. The case will go back to the lower court for review with this new ruling in mind.

Matsch said that he would not be able to attend the Beverly Hills ceremony, because he is traveling to New York City this weekend to take part in the New York Sept. 11 memorial next Tuesday.

In addition to the music and speakers, the Beverly Hills Police Department will have an honor guard to perform the traditional flag ceremonies.

One defining feature about Tsircou, which the producers neglected to highlight, is that her “outgoing, honest, say-itlike-it is” personality, as she describes it, shelters a nuanced woman her expresses her experiences through painting and photography.

Following a catastrophic fall from her horse resulting in a broken neck, Tsircou endured two surgeries to fuse her spine and some 27 procedures with anesthesia that delayed her starting a family and prompted doctors to prescribe myriad pills “like candy” to deal with the physical and emotional pain of her injury.

Instead of taking the pills, Tsircou began collecting them and eventually used them in her art in an intense series she calls her “Candy Pill Paintings.”

With the exception of a tweet from the Beverly Hills Nannies twitter page asking fans if they knew that Tsircou is also an artist, the show makes no mention of her career as an artist, despite the fact that her artwork adorns the walls of her home and her studio is inside her home.

“It hasn’t really changed my life,” she said. “I’m still the same person…just taking care of my baby.”

History does repeat itself.

In 2012, the California legislature is bought and paid for by unions on one side; giant corporations on the other. After more than a century the people seem poised to retake control of their own government. The people’s reform is Proposition 32, which prohibits corporations and unions from automatically deducting money from workers' paychecks for political purposes. It also bans direct corporate and union contributions to state and local

candidates, as well as contributions by government contractors to the politicians who control contracts awarded to them. The workers can still donate, but they must make is a conscious decision themselves. The corporation executives and the union bosses cannot do it by themselves.

The Prop 32 effort is led by former Democrat State Senator Gloria Romero. This former leader of the California State Senate is now state director of Democrats for Education Reform. Romero, a former school teacher and the highest ranking Latina to hold office in California, said Prop. 32 will lead to reforms in California’s public schools and will cut off some of the power and influence

unions and corporations. She asserts that the winners will be California children and residents.

"People are sick and tired of knowing that Sacramento is dominated by special interests," Romero told The Courier.

"Money has dominated Sacramento and it's time to make this change."

The measure is strongly opposed by the California Teachers Union and all public employee unions. CTA President Dean E. Vogel has written that Prop. 32 "singles out teachers, nurses, firefighters, police and all those who educate, heal and protect our communities."

Romero argues that everyday workers are the ones who will actually benefit if Prop. 32 passes.

Nothing in Prop 32 prevents any union member from

making a political contribution through the union.

On the other side, the proposition bans many direct corporate contributions. The entire proposition is intended to “take the money out of the process” as much as possible, says Romero.

"All we're really saying is the union itself can't contribute money, but the members still can," Romero told The Courier.

"This gives union members a choice. Why would I want money taken out of my check and given to someone I don't even plan to vote for?"

Supporters of Prop 32 include Hon. John Arguelles (retired justice of the California Supreme Court), the California Republican Party, Gabriella Holt (President of Citizens for California Reform), former State Secretary of Education

Marian Bergeson, Jon Coupal (president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association), Charles Munger, Jr. and former L.A. mayor Richard Riordan.

Opponents include the California Democratic Party, the California Teachers Association, the California League of Women Voters, California Common Cause, California School Employees Association, California Labor Federation and Robbie Hunter (executive secretary of the Los Angeles/Orange County Building and Construction Trades Council).

While current polling numbers look favorable for Prop. 32 supporters, Romero preaches caution because she knows an avalanche of more union money is coming soon. To date, the CTA has already donated more than $9 million to fight Prop 32. The State Council of Service Employees has donated $4.5 million.

"This wouldn't completely eliminate special interests, but it would begin to reshape the political landscape so that ordinary people can begin to take back their government," Romero said.

The only person associated with the City who appeared to show any sympathy for the Hudson’s was Code Enforcement Officer Nestor Otazu. Kelli Jo Nicholas, who rescued Cleo before finding a home for her with the Hud-

son’s, told The Courier that Otazu informed the family that the City had to take the fliers down once it received a call from the Mayor’s office.

City Public Information Manager Therese Kosterman denied any involvement from Mayor Brien, telling The Courier that Brien was “not involved at all” City Code does state that residents are not allowed to post public fliers, but the code was not being enforced until the Mayor’s office apparently got involved.

Seitz News of another Beverly Hills or Westside-based drugor-alcohol-addled celebrity has almost become a weekly ritual with seemingly never-ending fodder for entertainment TV and tabloids. But scratch beneath the glitter and the pros who work with these high-profile individuals to overcome their substance addiction problems say that celebrities are just like you and me. Sort of.

Mark Jaffe M.D., a psychiatrist with Cliffside Malibu, says that a protocol of his work with celebs who come to the posh addiction treatment center is to help them be open and honest with themselves. “Just like most people, they often have a difficult time doing this, which interferes with their treatment.

When they embrace that ethos, it’s often liberating for them which allows them to deal seriously with their addiction, which may be ruining their public career, private life, personal health, and likely all of the above,” he said.

An integral part of treatment at the center is intense and individualized therapy, says its founder/CEO Richard Taite, himself a former drug addict.

He recounts his personal road to recovery and how he applied those lessons to Cliffside Malibu in Ending Addiction For Good, a new book being published this fall.

Arthritis sets in, muscles ache, and the eyes don’t see quite as well.

A complaint you may not hear as often is that most seniors are terrified of falling, and for good reason. According to the National Institutes of Health, fall-related injuries are the leading cause of death in Americans over 65. Unfortunately, most seniors do not report falls to their physicians until they are seriously hurt.

• What causes falls? Most seniors and physicians do not realize that a major cause of falls is poor physical fitness. It’s a dire cycle; a lack of exercise leads to weak muscles, reduced posture, inadequate balance control, and resultant falls.

With most seniors consulting their physicians much later than they should, additional problems also set in.

Don’t wait for serious injury to happen. The potential cause of falls should be diagnosed from the onset, just like any other health concern. A qualified physician or physical therapist specialist can do just that.

• How are falls and balance problems diagnosed? In most cases, various physical, balance, and walking tests may be sufficient to diagnose a problem. Other times, it may be necessary to have more detailed diagnostic inner-ear testing.

and brain function that relate to balance control.

Although falls are the result of poor physical fitness, there may also be more complex causes. These may include TIA activity (transient ischemic attacks— often called “silent strokes”), poor innerear function, and diminished sensation in the feet (neuropathy).

The good news is that the diagnostic process is much more accurate and comfortable than ever. Once the correct diagnosis is made, successful treatment methods can be started.

• How can exercising prevent falls?

Balance is actually a complex activity. For perfect balance we use our vision, leg, hip and back muscles, tactile senses in our feet, the inner ear, and our “memory” of how we control balance.

Research has shown that dynamically exercising these specific components of balance makes them strong and more responsive, and exercising on a consistent basis can minimize the chance of future falls.

Not all exercises are created equal.

Many seniors think walking is enough, but a major UCLA study later repeated in New Zealand and Australia, showed that seniors who used only walking for exercise had the same rate of falls compared to those who were sedentary. Instead, a variety of physical activities is recommended.

When I asked Lois Banner about this, she said that she didn’t have proof but she had been told it from reliable sources. This took place a few weeks before her death for which the truth may never be known.

Local taxi drivers hated this organization, - some still do - for understandable, if not wholly patriotic, reasons; but, SOS prevailed.

SOS (Soldiers Organized Services) is a nonprofit that provides free transportation to active-duty military personnel. Their most traveled route: the 80-mile-plus, 2-hour, 1-way trip between the Palm Springs International Airport and the sprawling U.S. Marine Base located in Twentynine Palms.

As with most nonprofits, someone saw a need and then did something about it. In the case of SOS, that someone was Erica Stone. She was at the airport in 2007 and spotted a Marine who was stranded there after the last bus back to base had left. Rather than leave him dissolute at the airport, Stone gave him a ride back to Twentynine Palms.

And thus a beautiful relationship was begun with the troops at Twentynine Palms, a relationship that now transports between 5 and 15 service personnel a day between the base and airport, benefiting service members who can’t afford an expensive taxi ride or whose schedules do not match those of the bus.

SOS has just celebrated giving a ride to its 30,000th passenger.

That’s a lot of happy service personnel and their families.

But, as can be imagined, funds are difficult to find and urgently needed, as is the pool of volunteer drivers whose numbers have dwindled from 150 to about 50. Unfortunately, Marilyn had to overcome a stutter so beyond being a “party girl” for visiting movie theatre owners, the studio did not see a future.

Darryl Zanuck did not like her, but Johnny Hyde, a VP of William Morris Agency, fell in love with her. He took over her career and financed plastic surgery on her nose and chin that would make the film camera love her.

One aspect of Monroe is that she never stopped taking classes and learning, from the Actors Lab to singing and dancing classes. She always had a version of a “ stage mother” first with Natasha Lytess, and later with Paula Strasberg.

The men in her life ranged from Joe Schenck, Pat DiCicco and other party boys of the 1950s.

Director Elia Kazan wrote her a wonderful letter which Lois Banner quotes--that she will always be with him, but advises her to stop feeling worthless, not settle for second best in a man, stay away from abusive men, and stop taking taxis to parties. It was Kazan who introduced her to Arthur Miller, joining up with him after her short marriage to Joe DiMaggio.

Success came after the films There's No Business Like Show Business and The River of No Return, and then there was Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in 1954 which established her as a star.

This was followed by How

Lois Banner, USC professor of history and gender studies, has penned Marilyn: The Passion And The Paradox (Bloomsbury $30).

Tracing the history from the grandmother to the mother to Marilyn Monroe, born in the charity ward of Los Angeles General Hospital on June 1, 1926. Never recognized by her father, her mother, Gladys Monroe Baker, was an ill-paid film cutter in an era of women who earned little and spent what they did in bars and dancing spots became emotionally ill and left Marilyn, then known as Norma Jean, with her friend, Grace Atchison McKee. Placed in a foster home, then a charity orphanage, and during her middle school years, in 1941 she attended Emerson Junior High where she was voted “the Oomph Girl.” She was known for wearing a tight red sweater without a bra.

Van Nuys High School came next where she marries Jim Dougherty in 1942. After Jim goes off to war, she is working in a factory when asked to pose for publicity pictures.

When this occurs, Marilyn has found her true path as she soon becomes a photographer’s dream, and then the epitome–a contract with 20th Century-Fox.

LETTERS Haim Saban has written in The New York Times that President Barack Obama is a strong supporter of Israel. This is another view: Contrary to Mr. Saban and the claims of other apologists, President Obama has been the most hostile president towards Israel since Jimmy Carter. These are the facts and his history: (1) From the beginning of his presidency he has advocated a revisionist Palestinian narrative based on myth and a denial of Jewish history.

(2) He used his Cairo speech in 2009 to reinforce the canard that Israel exists only because of European guilt over the Holocaust which he compared to the Palestinian situation.

(3) He didn’t acknowledge the inappropriateness of Palestinian claims to a country that never existed in a land with an undeniable Jewish provenance.

(4) He negated the Jewish history and delegitimized ancestral Jewish claims while reinforcing that Palestinian ‘suffering’ is equivalent to genocide.

(5) He has relentlessly continued to target ‘settlements’ as the source of conflict while ignoring that Arab/Muslim rejectionism long preceded their existence and that no Palestinian state was sought during the 19 years when Judea, Samaria and Gaza were illegally controlled by Jordan and Egypt.

(6) While haranguing Israel, he never chastised the Arabs for their anti-Semitic incitement, their advocacy of genocide and the destruction of Israel.

(7) He never publicly acknowledged Israel as a Jewish State.

(8) At the U.N. in 2009, he refused to condemn Arab/Muslim anti-Semitism before the body most responsible for facilitating it’s spread.

(9) The most outrageous was in his May 2011 speech in which he advanced the discredited theory of “linkage” (which holds that the Arab-Israeli conflict is the root of all geopolitical problems in the Middle East) as he called on Israel to retreat to the indefensible 1949 armistice lines and negotiate an Arab ‘right of return.’ He said NOTHING of the Palestinians and no other President in history has made such outrageous demands of Israel.

(10) Yes, President Obama bowed to a foreign king, visited Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt…all in Israel’s region.

(11) He has publicly lectured Jewish leaders that ‘Israelis must engage in self-reflection’ as though they’re not committed to peace.

(12) He made Israel construction freezes preconditions to peace talks when they were never required by Oslo or UN resolution 242.

(13) He repudiated a letter sent by Pres.

Bush to Ariel Sharon in April of 2004, which underscored that returning to the 1949 armistice line was unrealistic and that a final status agreement would take into consideration already existing major Israeli population centers. Both houses of Congress voted nearly unanimously on a resolution of this letter.

(14) He praises the PA as being ‘moderate’ despite it’s refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state and it’s refusal to negotiate.

(15) He attempted to humiliate Prime Minister Netanyahu by forcing him to enter the White House through a service entrance, serving non-Kosher food to the staff and making him wait while he went upstairs for dinner with his

family.

(16) He demanded Netanyahu apologize to Turkey for the casualties on the flotilla even though the visual evidence showed that the Israelis were acting in self defense against armed terrorists on board.

(17) Her refused to criticize Abbas when he gave his UN speech denying the Jews’ historical connection to Israel in front of a map on which Israel was erased.

(18) His policy of ‘engagement’ with Iran and slow coming sanctions have enabled Iran to proceed with it’s genocidal goals.

(19) His open microphone remarks disparaged Netanyahu to former French President Sarkozy.

(20) And now…allowing the Democratic platform to eliminate Jerusalem as the sovereign capitol of Israel and then taking credit for reinserting it back.

While this is only a partial list, I wonder if Mr Saban really believes that any senior Israeli official would say anything other than the U.S. and Israel relationship has “never been stronger”?

Mireille Wolfe ****** Regarding the newest issue to setup a City produced news broadcast, John Mirisch has it exactly right when he says that this...”reminds me of the old Soviet Union.” What audacity and arrogance for Gold, Brucker, and Brien to think that they can push aside various credible and established news sources to set up their own microphones! As if it is not enough that these three (maybe we should refer to them as the “Troika”?) have consistently dismissed the voice of the citizens who voted them into office, and taken positions detrimental to the community, Now these three are looking to establish their own news reporting! They certainly need a dose of humility to dilute their sense of absolute power!

It was the opinion of a local columnist the upcoming election will be determined based upon personality and campaign effectiveness. I hope residents seriously consider the attitudes and decisions of incumbents seeking re-election.

Are these what we want from our representatives?

We are no longer a sleepy “village” where residents can base their vote on personality and campaign dog and pony shows with no repercussions. We are faced with too many serious and community re-defining issues and must have long memories.

Christine Skirmuntt Ford ****** This letter is addressed to those supporting Barry Brucker's plans for his own TV program. I understand Brucker has the right to his opinion regarding The Courier. I also understand he has the right to develop his own TV program and express his personal views. What remains as a big question mark is how is it possible for three adult men to always vote the same and have the same views on all issues?

As it is Brucker's right to have his own program, it should also be his obligation to pay for this programming and not use City money for such; provide truthful information in front of the camera; and be responsible to answer questions posed to him in front of the camera.

Issues that desperately need attention and should be addressed include: 1)Beverly Hills water bills are sky high though fountains across the City continue to spray and gardens continue to be irrigated during daytime hours;

Last Sunday night (Sept. 2) at 3 a.m., we were awakened by a sharp, thunderous crack and a bit of shaking of our beds by what was apparently an earthquake. We jumped out of bed and waited for something else to happen. Should we run outdoors as we did at our last earthquake, which took down our chimney when we lived on Palm Drive. I turned on the television, but even the news station had no news. Nothing did.

I grabbed our bedside telephone and called every emergency number I could remember. Nothing. I called information and asked for a number to inquire about an earthquake. I got nowhere. I called Beverly Hills City Hall and inquired of a sleepy voice there: “I would like to report an earthquake!”

“What earthquake?”

“Give me the police station!”

Somehow I got an answer, with the information: “There has been a 3.2 quake a mile outside Beverly Hills.”

I shouted: “Which side of Beverly Hills, north, south?”

My informant had hung up.

We waited a little longer to allow for any aftershocks and finally gave up and went back to sleep. By Monday morning some of the press began to report the little quake. This reassured us we had not experienced a joint nightmare. We picked up two small doll figures that had flipped over and fallen, and life went back to normal.

The whole incident was minor, but shook us up sufficiently so as we lie down to sleep these days we are just a wee bit apprehensive, wondering when and if the really big one will come along some day. Did it wake you? and heavy traffic congestion; 3) Segways have taken over the City in both residential and commercial areas, creating high potential for danger and invading personal safety and space; 4) Tourist buses and vans invade our residential streets, interfere with our privacy, and create even more traffic in the Beverly Hills shopping and walking district. Shouldn't tourist vehicles be confined to outer boulevards such as Sunset or Pico?

Perhaps if you decide to proceed with this TV program, it should be used to address relevant issues to our City rather than to express subjective views or personal opinions that are likely not formulated based upon factual, veracious information.

Pablo Nankin, M.D. ****** The traffic on Santa Monica Boulevard weekdays is bumper to bumper during business hours. It is hardly moving and that is a real problem. Is the City even thinking about a partial solution to the problem? What will it be 10 years from today.

Years ago Los Angeles had a partial solution with Olympic Boulevard becoming four lanes in the morning going west and reversed in the evenings by removing temporary rubber cones in the middle of the street twice a day.

Making a side street one way all day might do some good. Is making a street for trucks only during certain hours possible?

My question is whether the City is even thinking about this problem or have they given up?
