PORTRAITS OF HOPE– Beverly Hills’ BOLD summer officially kicked off Wednesday evening at the Lily Pond with luminescent discs in neon colors. The project is the brainchild of public installation artist Ed Massey (pictured here with Mayor Lili Bosse). The event served as the official launch for Beverly Hills Open Later Days (BOLD). The initiative is Bosse’s effort to make Beverly Hills more of an evening destination, with businesses staying open later throughout August on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

“Each side brought their interests to the table, and both sides understand that the other has a stake. It’s complicated; it does revolve around people’s lives,” said Singh. Last Sunday, the 14 representatives met for nearly five hours with Singh, representing the fifth facilitated meeting in the process. Participants continue to emerge with greater willingness, demonstrating increasing flexibility in the challenging discussions. Singh will not report to the City Council for the August 8 meeting, he said, as the work is not finished. Mayor Lili Bosse, who was present Sunday to observe, said that the sessions will continue as long as necessary so that “everyone is heard.” Councilmembers Les Friedman and Robert Wunderlich have been attending the sessions regularly. “Both sides have to live in their community and co-exist with respect. I totally believe there is a solution here,” said Singh. How Beverly Hills’ Police Chief Gets To ‘Yes’ By Victoria Talbot Beverly Hills Police Chief Sandra Spagnoli was among the power women leading discussions at Motion Picture & Television Fund’s (MPTF) 5th annual “Deal With It: A Women’s Conference; Taking Charge & Facing Life’s Curveballs,” joining a panel about “How to Get to Yes!” at the Montage Hotel Sunday. The chief was in good company joined by SAGAFTRA’s national director of Music Stefanie Taub; CEO of The Female Quotient and founder of Girl’s Lounge Shelley Zalis; and moderator journalist Linda Grasso. Spagnoli, who became BHPD chief 18 months ago, said though her entire career has been in a male-centric environment, she never plays the “gender card.” “I talk about my qualifications, skills and experience,” she said. “Spend the time. Write down what you want, your current pay and benefits, what your boss is making, what people are making in likeindustry positions. I had that all written down,” she said of her interviews to become chief.
Beverly Hills Police Chief Sandra Spagnoli spoke at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s women’s conference.
In negotiating, Spagnoli advocated periods of silence as a tactic, as well as taking a break and leaving the negotiating table. “Have a goal,” said Spagnoli. “Where do you want to be and then some… What are your non-negotiables, the lines you will not cross? Women are rewarded based on past performances and men based on potential. Use your strengths.” The event featured breakout discussions on a number of topics of interest to women. It is designed to give women in the entertainment industry practical advice and counsel
for planning and dealing with life’s challenges. Topics included: Dealing with Difficult People: Bullies, Mean Girls and Narcissists; Pretend You Have Six Months to Live; Unlocking the Brain to Understand Alzheimer’s; Feeling Overwhelmed; The Laws of Attraction, Aging Well and more. Sponsors include SAGAFTRA, Keck Medicine of USC, Select Medical, Cedars Sinai, Delta Airlines and featuring Oscar and Emmy-winning producer Sheila Nevins along with leading experts in career, health, estate planning, finance and more.
Court of Appeal Division Shakeup To Delay Karen Christiansen Hearing By Laura Coleman Following a decision on July 21 to transfer the hearing of the People v. Christiansen from the Court of Appeal Division 3 to Division 6, it is unlikely that the Beverly Hills Unified School District will have a definitive ruling on the reach of Government Code Section 1090 before 2018, confirmed district counsel Fred Fenster. BHUSD is currently appealing a 2015 ruling by L.A. Superior Court Judge Stephen Czuleger that the school district breached its contract with its former facilities director, Karen Christiansen, when the district fired her after she entered into a sole-sourced $16 million
contract with a company she founded, Strategic Concepts, LLC. A jury subsequently determined that she was a victim and was owed almost $20 million. Earlier this year the California Supreme Court issued a ruling in the case of The People v. Hossain Sahlolbel which disapproved the decision in People vs. Christiansen and validated the legal precept that Government Code Section 1090 can be violated by an independent contractor. The Court held that in both the civil and criminal arena, “independent contractors come within the scope of Section 1090 when they have duties to engage in or advise on public contracting that they

are expected to carry out on the government’s behalf.” In 2012, Christiansen was convicted by a jury as a criminal for self-dealing after having entered into a sole-sourced contract with the company she founded through her role as BHUSD’s facilities chief. That conviction was subsequently overturned on appeal with that (see ‘KAREN CHRISTIANSEN’ page 17)
By Victoria Talbot The Beverly Hills Police Department released details of an arrest May 20 in connection with a sexual assault by a man posing as a rideshare driver in Beverly Hills. “On May 13, 2017, Beverly Hills police received a report of a sexual assault. The suspect in that case, posing as a ride service driver, picked up a female passenger in the city of West Hollywood. The victim believed the suspect was the legitimate ride service driver she had requested. The suspect drove a short distance before he pulled over in the City of Beverly Hills and assaulted the victim,” said the release. BHPD detectives conducted an investigation that led to an arrest May 20. The suspect was placed under surveillance and ultimately identified by police as 40-year-old Carlos Omar Pichinte from Los Angeles. Pichinte was booked on the primary charge of rape (261(a)(1)), in addition to other felony charges. He is being held with bail set at $1.3 million. Pichinte was scheduled to
appear in court yesterday. Since his arrest, BHPD detectives have been conducting an active investigation and believe Pichente may be connected to additional sexual assaults in the Los Angeles area. When arrested, he was driving a silver 2015 4-door Kia Rio. Victims of similar sexual assaults and anyone with information on this case are encouraged to contact the BHPD at 310-285-2158 during business hours and 310-288-2656 after hours. Ride share users are encouraged to confirm the make, model and license plate number of the vehicle that appears on their smartphone app prior to entering the car. Santa Monica Boulevard Detours To Affect August Traffic By Victoria Talbot Road work continues on Segment 2 on North Santa Monica Boulevard between Alpine Drive and Wilshire Boulevard for the Santa Monica Boulevard Reconstruction project. Beginning mid-August, approximately Aug. 12, North Santa Monica Boulevard will be reduced to two lanes for westbound traffic only, similar to detours in June for Segment 1. Eastbound traffic lanes will be diverted to South Santa Monica Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard. As with Segment 1, Segment 2 involves removal of the roadway and replacement with new subgrade and asphalt, necessitating lane closures and detours. During the closures buses will continue to travel west-
bound on North Santa Monica Boulevard with stops at Palm Drive, Camden Drive and Wilshire Boulevard. Eastbound buses will be diverted onto South Santa Monica Boulevard in Century City with stops just west of Charleville Boulevard and west of Crescent Drive. Eastbound buses will return to North Santa Monica Boulevard at Doheny Drive. To limit residential traffic, left turns will be prohibited from eastbound Wilshire Boulevard onto Trenton Drive. To complete work on intersections, Canon and Rexford Drives will be closed the weekend of Aug. 12-13 at North Santa Monica Boulevard and on Aug. 19-20, Beverly and Crescent Drives will be closed to through traffic at North Santa Monica Boulevard.

Wanda’s Woes Continue As AMC Theatres Reports Plummeting Profits By Matt Lopez China’s Dalian Wanda Group got another dose of bad news this week when its AMC cinemas chain saw its shares plummet 25 percent after issuing a profit warning for the second quarter. AMC Entertainment Holdings – which Wanda purchased for $2.6 billion in 2012 – is the world’s largest theatre chain, but issued a statement this week reporting that it expects a net loss for the second quarter of between $174-178 million. Buying AMC, along with the 2016 purchase of Legendary Entertainment and the approval late last year of the $1.2 billion One Beverly Hills development, were supposed to be big steps toward Wanda chairman Wang Jianlian’s plans for a China takeover of Hollywood. AMC Theatres, for its part, has publicly said in recent weeks that it is not reliant on funding from Wanda. AMC said in a statement that its recent acquisitions, including that of Nordic Cinema Group, were done with backing by U.S. banks and that Wanda “has never been a source of acquisition funding for AMC.” Deadline Hollywood, however,
speculated this week that AMC’s announcement of profit loss could be "related to a planned sale of National CineMedia shares or a sale of AMC shares by Wanda.” The timing of the AMC news is bad for Wanda, which is reportedly facing financial woes after selling off $9.3 billion worth of properties and theme parks to Sunac China. Deadline Hollywood reported that due to restrictions that the Chinese government is placing on companies infusing money into film production, Hollywood is “now fearful of where the money may come from to finance its projects.” Variety reported this week that Wanda has for the first time hired a firm to oversee its worldwide public relations. Hill+Knowlton, Wanda’s new PR company, will “manage its global public relations and communications strategy,” the firm said in a statement, which made no mention of Wanda’s recent debt-fueled fire sale. Wanda Deputy GM Rohan a'Beckett did not return a request for comment.

HOMELESSNESS (Continued from page 1)
to find solutions to homelessness via a series of programs and partnerships. “The easiest thing to do is turn your back. You can’t do that,” said Wright. Beverly Hills spokesperson Dana Beesen cited the following seven approaches the City currently takes: • CLASP (Changing Lives and Sharing Places) Outreach team, which operates out of the Human Services Division of the City’s Community Services Department and spends their time engaging individuals who are long-term homeless in Beverly Hills’ as well as individuals new to the area; • The Step Up on Second contract through the City’s Community Assistance Grant Funding, which augment’s the CLASP homeless outreach team in linking eligible individuals to L.A. County’s mental health programs; • City Ambassadors, who operate in the business triangle and on South Beverly Drive seven days a week, 21 hours per day; • The People Assisting The Homeless (PATH) contract, which provides five year-round interim housing beds for homeless individuals referred by the City of Beverly Hills; • The Beverly Hills Homeless Collaborative, a monthly collaboration where faith-based organizations in the City, City services and departments, nearby hospitals, and others (including the CLASP team) share resources to identify and assist homeless individuals in the community; • The Chronic Homeless Assistance Team (CHAT), which represents a collaboration with the Beverly Hills Fire
Department, the Beverly Hills Police Department, the City Prosecutor, and Human Services to concentrate resources on the highest utilizers of City services and most severely ill homeless individuals; and • The Home Again Program, which reunites local homeless individuals with their family members throughout the country. The new coalition aims to leverage the power and cache of Beverly Hills in order to help address this nationwide epidemic initially at the county level. At its first meeting, which in addition to Wright and Moore, also included Ted Hayes, the one time operator of Dome Village in Downtown L.A. whom Wright met two years ago during his campaign for the US Congress 33rd District, the nascent coalition honed in on the idea of creating a township as a potential way to effectively create a sustainable solution to the problem of homelessness. Hayes advocated replicating something similar to Dome Village, which for 13 years provided housing in 20 OmniSphere domes within an enclave that further offered support services. “When they transition, they’re no longer homeless psychologically,” he said. Unlike Dome Village however, which housed on average 35 people at a time, the coalition has its sights set on creating a settlement for upwards of 1,000 people, with a special area for those with severe mental health issues. The group has targeted former military bases that have been closed by the Department of Defense. In fact, there are dozens of these across the state. Nationwide, more than 350 such instal-
lations have been closed through the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. Following Hayes’ initial meeting with Wright, he said he has had renewed vigor in helping craft a sustainable solution to homelessness. To that end, he is serving as a consultant to the coalition formed by Wright and Moore. At the coalition’s initial meeting, Hayes recalled speaking to an urban development class at UCLA in the early 1990s where students identified George Air Force Base in Victorville as a potential location to create an enclave where homeless people would be housed and given jobs in some type of manufacturing business that could be brought into the area. The former Air Force base, which is roughly 100 miles east of Beverly Hills, was closed almost three decades ago via the BRAC process. The property, which is owned by the City of Victorville, has since been renamed the Southern California Logistics Airport and is the site of an industrial business park, in addition to an operational airport. A spokesperson for the City of Victorville told the Courier that the site sounded like an unlikely candidate for the coalition’s vision. Wright said he plans to go after grants that would facilitate further exploration of using similar sites that have not been transformed following the decommissioning process. Influential Beverly Hills Board of Education VP Lisa Korbatov told the Courier that following a conversation she had with Wright in July she planned to help with his efforts to get this endeavor moving forward.
Trump Names Former Dodgers President McCourt U.S. Ambassador To France Former Los Angeles Dodgers President and CEO Jamie McCourt won't become the U.S. ambassador to Belgium after all. President Donald Trump Wednesday withdrew McCourt's nomination for the post, and instead nominated her to serve as ambassador to France and Monaco. No explanation was given for the change. In 2009, Jamie McCourt founded the investment firm Jamie Enterprises, which primarily invests in high-value real estate, biotechnology ventures and technology startups. McCourt was an early investor in the peer-to-peer car sharing service ZipCar and the clinical-stage pharmaceutical company Kite Pharma. She is also an investor in a variety of culinary ventures. McCourt is also a member of the boards of trustees of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art. She was fired as the Dodgers CEO in 2009 shortly after her separation from Frank McCourt. Their divorce was finalized in 2012. Like all ambassadorial appointments, McCourt's nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.

During the first half of 2017 seven deals closed in the neighborhood at a median sale price of $15.725 million. Beverly Hills commands the second position on the list with Trousdale Estates. Favored by celebrities like Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, the area continues to be a celebrity hot spot. The exclusive neighborhood ended the first half of the year with 12 closed sales and boasted a median sale price of $8.5 million. Beverly Hills occupies four spots in the PropertyShark ‘Top 50’. The North of Sunset Boulevard neighborhood ranked fourth, entering the top 10 with a total of 23 sales closed and a median sale price of $7.7 million. The Flats ranked fifth, with a median sale price of $7.468 million while South of Santa Monica Boulevard landed a more mod-
est spot, ranking 24th on our list with a median sale price of $2.724 million. Malibu’s Cove Colony ranked third, with eight sales that closed at a median sale price of $8 million. Three other Malibu neighborhoods made the top 10, with median sale prices ranging from $3.5 million in Malibu Park (No. 10) to $3.9 million in Point Dume (No. 9) and $6.9 million in Broad Beach (No. 6). The only neighborhoods in the top 10 that are not part of either Malibu or Beverly Hills are Santa Monica’s North of Montana (No. 7), with a median sale price of $4.5 million, and Bradbury (No. 8), with a median sale price of $4.3 million. The city of Los Angeles didn’t make it into the PropertyShark Top 10, but it does feature 12 neighborhoods in the top 50. Most of these neighborhoods experienced year-over-year price gains, apart from Beverly Grove and Westwood, where median sale prices dropped 6 percent and 9 percent, respectively.
U.S. Home Sales Rose Slightly In June Sales of new US homes rose slightly in June, hitting their highest level in three months, as demand for housing remained stiff, according to government data released Wednesday. But prices retreated from an all-time high and supplies rose, suggesting new construction could be offering some relief to what has been an exceedingly tight market, according to the Commerce Department report. Sales of new homes rose 0.8 percent for the month to an annual rate of 610,000, seasonally adjusted, marking the second straight increase and matching analyst expectations. That put home sales last month 9.1 percent higher than June of last year. The median price retreated from May's all-time record, falling 4.2 percent to $310,800. The sales pace put the supply of available homes at 5.4 months, up slight from 5.3 months in May.
The stock of homes for sale rose to its highest level in eight years at an estimated 272,000, the report said. Sales jumped in the western and mid-western United States, with sales of single-family homes in those regions rising by 10 percent and 12.5 percent, respectively. But activity was flat in the northeast and fell more than six percent in the south. Despite the consecutive increases, the data for June showed some signs of weakness, with net revisions bringing total sales since the start of the year down by 27,000. In contrast to this report, industry numbers released this week showed sales of existing homes fell last month, and realtors blamed a shortage of available homes and the tight market, which is pushing prices higher. –– AFP

Regis House Summer Camp Offers Underprivileged Youth Hope, Adventure By Kaitlin Musante Just west of downtown L.A., past a pair of metal and glass doors covered with stickers and flyers, lies Regis House, a community center run by the Sisters of Social Service. The center is mostly visited by immigrant families who lack sufficient resources to provide for their children and aims to help them socially, physically and emotionally. Just a few weeks ago, the hallways were filled with 55 campers aged six to 13, followed closely by three summer day camp coordinators and 15 volunteers who watched over them. The kids were part of the summer day camp program, which lasted five weeks and focused on helping the campers explore the city while instilling a sense of hope within them that can stretch beyond the safety the camp provides. Executive Director Sister Albertina Morales highlighted how the children seldom have the opportunity to visit places beyond their immediate vicinity. “We have taken kids to the beach who have never been before simply because they just don’t have the access,” she said. “We really want to help them with that.” Although the camp technically costs $75 a week per camper, families are given discounts based on their financial situation. According to Morales, only two families paid the full price. One severely in-need family paid a total of $40 a week for their three children to all attend the camp. Morales said that they never turn anyone away for their inability to pay, acknowledging that many of the children wear the same clothes for a week in a row because their parents are unable to afford to do laundry more than once a month. She also recalls a 13-year-old girl who attended the summer day camp and needed to be taught how to put on the bathing suit they gave her, as she had never owned one before.
To further help the families, in addition to running an after-school program, Regis House runs a food distribution program every Wednesday in conjunction with the L.A. Regional Food Bank, serving over 70 families a week. Additionally, Regis House maintains a food pantry filled with donations open to families and the homeless who walk in hungry during the rest of the week. Morales said that many of the students who age out of the summer day camp and after school program return years later to work as a camp counselor or after school assistant in order to give back to the community that once helped them. Take Andrea Hernandez for example, who first visited Regis House in 2011 as a camper and has returned every year since because of the invaluable experiences it has given her. She credits Regis House for being a safe haven that allows the local children to escape from their problems and lose themselves in the fun of their daily adventures. She also credits it with helping her learn how to engage with people more efficiently, be more empathetic, and to think creatively. The community center also has a large number of volunteers. Beverly Hills resident Susan Welsh has been volunteering with Regis House for over 10 years as a member of the Juniors of Social Service, an auxiliary group which supports the community center. “Whenever I go and meet the mothers and the children who are supported at Regis House, I think I get more out of it than they do,” Welsh said. “It is so inspirational to be there and the families are so grateful and they are working so hard and giving back so much and they have so little. It’s compelling. They do such a great job of creating a home away from home for these families; a place of support, a place of acceptance, a place where they matter.”
Nespresso Celebrates Swiss National Day By Victoria Talbot The Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce celebrated Swiss National Day with a party at the Nespresso Boutique in Beverly Hills Monday, complete with a “Barista Competition” for the best-decorated latte, and featuring the new Consul General of Los Angeles Peter Hafner. The event was a celebration of the country’s 726th anniversary, and an acknowledgement of the dozens of Swiss companies located in the state of California, including Nespresso, and in the US. More than 104,000 Californians are of Swiss descent, making it a large and vibrant Swiss community,
Los Angeles Chapter of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce Chairman Emeritus Roger Wacker, Chairperson Angela Wacker, newly appointed Swiss Consul General in Los Angeles Peter Hafner and Jeffrey Evans of Nespresso.
according to Martin Dahinden, Swiss ambassador to the U.S., in remarks shared with the group for the occasion. Switzerland ranks second only to Japan in net jobs it creates for the U.S., though it is a tiny landlocked country, said Chairman Emeritus Roger Wacker.
Wacker pointed out that Switzerland is the sixth largest foreign investor and Swiss investments in the US “are growing at the second highest rate of any country.” “What’s good for Switzerland is good for American,” concluded Wacker.
HOW DO Y O U F E E L ? UCLA Study Offers Roadmap To Personalized Therapies For Sarcoma, Other Aggressive Cancers More than 12,390 cases of soft-tissue sarcoma will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year, and nearly 5,000 Americans are expected to die from the disease. Traditional treatments such as chemotherapy in softtissue sarcoma cases continue to result in low response rates and poor survival outcomes, and there is an urgent unmet need for more personalized strategies for the disease. A study with senior author Dr. Fritz Eilber— professor of surgery, division of surgical oncology, chief of UCLA’s Cancer Surgery Service and Dr. Fritz Eilber director of the Sarcoma Clinical/Translational Research Program in the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center— demonstrates that patient-derived orthotopic xenografts (PDOX) are feasible for use in the clinical setting and can provide oncologists with a roadmap to accurately identify which patients will and will not benefit from a specific therapy. This research has the potential to change the way people with sarcoma and other cancers are treated, he says. PDOXs are unique models where a patient’s individual tumor is grown in mice. Such xenografts have long shown great promise in modeling how sarcoma and other cancers can respond to and resist therapies, but their feasibility for use in individual patients in clinical settings remains unknown. The new UCLA study is the first to identify patient and tumor characteristics that predict the successful creation of models and which types of sarcomas are most likely to (see ‘SARCOMA,’ page 16)

Providence Saint Joseph Health, Well Being Trust Support Mental Health Initiatives With $10 Million In Grants Providence Saint Joseph (PSJH) Health, a faith-based nonprofit parent organization of 50 hospitals, 829 clinics and hundreds of programs and services across the Western U.S., and Well Being Trust, a new national foundation focused on mental health and wellness outcomes, have announced the first round of $10 million in grants and contracts to mental health and wellness initiatives supporting preschoolers, seniors, the homeless and addiction rehabilitation. “As health-care leaders, we must focus on the growing mentalhealth crisis affecting our communities,” said Richard Afable, MD, CEO of Saint Joseph Hoag Health, part of the Providence Saint Joseph Health network. “This is the type of commitment we should all be making; and we are excited to work together to address one of the great challenges of our time.” “Mental health needs in our communities must be addressed and the stigma of this illness removed—it’s not an issue that any one entity can tackle on its own,” said Erik G. Wexler, chief executive, Providence Saint Joseph Health, L.A. Region. “Through these grants and by working with our many partners, we look forward to improving comprehensive
mental-health care for Southern California.” PSJH’s partner in administering the grants is Well Being Trust, formed when the health system made a $100 million commitment to mental health across the entire service area to identify and implement strategies that address critical mental-health challenges and promote resilience in children, teens and families. “Nearly one in six Californians live with mental-health challenges, and we know that roughly half of adults and two-thirds of children are not receiving the care they need,” said Tyler Norris, MDiv, chief executive, Well Being Trust. “That burdens families across the community and the state. Significant gaps remain and through these early grants, we are working with our partners to bridge these gaps to provide for California’s most vulnerable populations.” Locally, Southern California grants went to: • School-Based Adolescent Mental Health System—Administered by the Promotion, Prevention and Intervention Mental Health Network at Saint Joseph Hoag Health in the Anaheim Union High School District. • Whole Person Care ModelMental Health—Also administered
by Saint Joseph Hoag Health in Orange County. • Outpatient Crisis Stabilization—Supporting the start-up phase of the Providence Outpatient Center for Crisis Stabilization at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center San Pedro. • Perinatal to 5 Mental Health Service—Administered by Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. • Safety Net Integration Program—Strengthening the support system for disadvantaged and vulnerable populations in the San Fernando Valley at Providence Holy Cross, Mission Hills. • Mental Health Community Partnership—Addressing homelessness and substance abuse; led by Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. • Mental Health Navigation— Licensed clinical social workers at Providence Saint John’s Health Center will provide case management for Medi-Cal and Medicare patients. • Implementing Collaborative Care for Mental Health—An integrated care model for mental health in the primary-care setting administered by the Santa Monica Family Physicians at Providence Saint Joseph Health.

Dodgers Strike Deal To Broadcast Six Upcoming Games On KTLA 5 There's good news Thursday for Dodger fans who haven't been able to watch games on television because they don't have Spectrum cable. Spectrum Networks has reached an agreement to simulcast another six games on broadcast station KTLA. All six of the games are on Tuesdays, beginning with the Aug. 22 game at Pittsburgh.
Star Japanese Pitcher Darvish To Debut For Dodgers Tonight Japanese star pitcher Yu Darvish will make his debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers today at New York against the Mets, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday. The Dodgers, who own the best record in the major leagues at 75-32, obtained the 30-year-old right-hander from the Texas Rangers for three minor-league players just
ahead of Monday's Major League Baseball trade deadline. Darvish, who will wear number 21 for the Dodgers, tossed his first bullpen session with his new teammates on Wednesday. Darvish has not started since July 26, when he surrendered 10 runs, but will have had eight days rest before fac-
ing the Mets. Darvish has a 3.06 career earned-run average (ERA) on six or more rest days compared to a 3.49 ERA in all other starts. "He has a great pitching mix and is very elite," Roberts said. "You add him to the pitching staff that we already have and that makes us considerably better."
The next two games being simulcast will be against the Arizona Diamondbacks, then the San Francisco Giants, the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Diego Padres. Dodger games are primarily shown only on Spectrum's SportsNet LA channel, meaning people with other cable or satellite services do not have access to the broadcasts.
More Than 5,000 Fans Watch First Chargers Practice In Los Angeles A crowd estimated by the team at more than 5,000 watched the Chargers first training camp practice since their return to Los Angeles after a 56-season absence last weekend in Costa Mesa. The crowd included four fans who received help climbing over a fence from receiver Keenan Allen. "We're very appreciative for how we've been welcomed here," Chargers quarterback
Philip Rivers said. "We're fired up about continuing to earn that trust and respect." The Chargers announced in January they would return to Los Angeles, where they played their inaugural 1960 season, from San Diego, where they played from 1961-2016. They will play at StubHub Center, then join the Los Angeles Rams in a stadium in Inglewood set to open in 2020.

Marilyn Monroe’s Legend Larger Than Ever Local Playwright’s Tribute to Marlene Dietrich Debuts In North Hollywood 55 Years After Her Death, Author Says After her untimely death on Aug. 5, 1962, Marilyn Monroe became the “most famous female face of the 20th century, and her legacy continues to thrive today,” says author of 15 books and longtime Beverly Hills resident Boze Hadleigh. His latest is Marilyn Forever-Musings On An American Icon By The Stars of Yesterday And Today (Taylor Trade), a collection of quotes exploring the star’s complex personality. Hadleigh began collecting the quotes in the 2000s after traveling the world from Mexico City to Istanbul and Cork, Ireland and seeing Monroe’s image on everything from hats and T-shirts to clothing ads. He’s divided the book into chapters reflecting four phases/aspects of her life: Victim, Vixen, Valentine and Venus. Entries range from poet Carl Sandburg— “She was a good talker. She spoke well on the national scene, the Hollywood scene, and on people who are good to know and people who ain’t.”—to Cher— “No other star can touch Marilyn Monroe’s posthumous success. Or ever will.” “The more I’ve read and learned about Marilyn the more I realize she was a good person, nicer than most stars, with a good heart,” says Hadleigh. “Betty White and others predicted that, had she lived, Marilyn would have become an animal-rights activist like Doris Day or Brigitte Bardot.” Hadleigh wants readers to know that Monroe was a voracious reader. “She
was no airhead,” he says. “She was big on self-improvement. Her biggest concern was increasing her talent and being taken seriously as an actress.” She was also brave, he says, “during the McCarthy era when she dated and then married a left-wing Jewish intellectual who was subpoenaed by Congress’ House Un-American Activities Committee. It could have harmed her career; and her advisers told her to drop Arthur Miller, but she refused,” Hadleigh says. The 144-page illustrated book is set for a second printing later this year. Hadleigh was asked to speak to three L.A. groups commemorating this 55th anniversary of Monroe’s death, including at Westwood Cemetery where she’s buried. He was interviewed by Playboy this week—Monroe was the magazine’s first cover—and will speak at a San Francisco library tomorrow. —Steve Simmons
Marlene Dietrich, who local playwright Willard Manus describes as “legendary actress, performer and patriot,” is the subject of his new one-woman show Marlene, playing at 7 p.m., Sundays through Aug. 27 at the Brickhouse Theatre, 10950 Peach Grove St., North Hollywood. The production stars Cindy Marinangel who previously appeared in Manus’ Berlin Cowboy, one of the nearly 50 plays the longtime Beverly Hills resident has written. “Dietrich was a fascinating character,” says Manus. “She was open about her sexuality, very intelligent and down to earth.” She was known to visit friends in their dressing rooms and cook for them, Willard Manus Manus relates. The 75-minute play is based on a true incident. In May 1960, Dietrich returned to Germany to perform on stage for the first time since fleeing the Hitler regime in 1939. The play is set in Dietrich’s dressingroom at Berlin’s Tatiana Palast Theatre, where she is trying to decide whether she should go through with the recital. Threats have been made on her life by Nazi sympathizers who still resented her for having fled to Hollywood and worked for Jews; and for spending much of WWII entertaining American soldiers on the front lines. “In their eyes she was a turncoat and a traitor, and should be killed,” Manus says.
Dietrich spent more than a year on the front lines singing her iconic songs like Falling In Love Again and The Boys In The Back Room, and was commissioned by Gen. George Patton. In the play, Dietrich is interviewed by an unseen reporter for Stars & Stripes and coaxed into talking about Hollywood and the seven visually striking films she made with Joseph von Sternberg ranging from The Blue Angel to The Devil Is A Woman. She was a disciple of the famed director, credited with creating her “sunken cheekbones and striking face” look with makeup and lighting. “He taught her so much, that she could walk onto a set and say, ‘this lighting is all wrong. This is how I should be shot,’” Manus says. He and his wife Mavis even got to know the famed director’s last wife Meri Otis Wilner, who lived on Lasky Drive. Tickets are $20 and available at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/303 4406. For more information, visit www.writeactrep.org/index.html. —Steve Simmons

Participants enjoyed a day full of fun, making new friends in the community and spending time in the ocean for three dives around the Isthmus of Catalina where the 21 divers saw everything from nudibranchs to bat rays.

Yes, there will indeed be a golf tournament this year. But no, it will never be the same again. The passing of Barbara Sinatra last week has resulted in some major changes in what had been the Desert’s premier celebrity golf tournament. Begun 31 years ago as a vehicle for Frank Sinatra to invite a cadre of his show business pals, this was a three-day weekend full of camaraderie, fun, food and entertainment … and charity. With the “Chairman of the Board’s” encouragement, Barbara Sinatra used the tourney as the major fundraising event supporting what has now turned into the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, committed to breaking the cycle of violence and child abuse to which they were subjected. This became a major underwriter for the two Sinatras’ pledge that no child be ever turned away from the center because of an inability to pay. Sadly, changes in the golf tournament had been planned long before Barbara Sinatra’s death. Gone was the tradition of holding it in February each year with this year’s event being moved forward to Dec.10-12. Another significant change is that it will no longer be held at Eagle Falls Golf Course in Indio’s Fantasy Springs Resort as play has been shifted to the more prestigious, and private, Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert. But perhaps the most significant change to the Sinatra tournament is its lack of celebrities. Until fairly recently, the “Sinatra” as the event was called by Desert dwellers and golfers, alike, could be counted on having several dozen luminaries from the worlds of Hollywood and sports accept an invitation to participate in an all expense paid fun weekend in the Desert, ending in a black-tie gala on the tourney’s last night featuring headliners such as Tony Bennett, Jay Leno, and “Ole Blue-Eyes”himself. The handwriting, however, was on the wall. The celebs who used to come were either not around anymore, or no longer capable of playing two rounds of golf in two days. It became most difficult to attract the quality of big names that gave the event its unique cache for decades. And, believe it or not, some of these celebrities did not like the virtually open access with the public, as the tournament was known as being both a camera- and autography-ready event. So it’s out with the focus on movie,TV and stage participants, and no longer will it be “invitational.” If you make an appropriate gift to the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center in Rancho Mirage, you will be assured of a spot. Hopefully, one thing won’t change. Comedian Tom Dreesen, who used to open for Sinatra has been the emcee for the past three decades. Never having missed a year, Dreesen’s future with the Sinatra tournament is uncertain. Other than the Sinatras, his not having a continuing part at the gala and pre-events would create a huge void. One change that’s appropriate is the tournament’s new name: the Barbara and Frank Sinatra Classic. Hopefully, it will be a name that’s around for an equally long time as its predecessor.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR When you walk a city you see things that people who drive don’t see. I’ve walked in Beverly Hills several hours a week for 15 years as part of my exercise routine. One disturbing trend I’ve noticed is the steady growth of lawlessness. It’s the type where people see if they can get away with small things and, when they do, they try to get away with ever more serious things. If not stopped, the end point of this behavior can be serious and tragic. One such lawless trend I have seen in my walks is the proliferation and misuse of handicap parking permits. The permits are for people with a chronic illness which seriously limits their ability to walk. Fifteen years ago, I rarely saw a car in our City with a handicap permit, but now they are everywhere. More disturbing, I rarely see drivers getting out of or getting into vehicles with these permits who have any problem with their ability to walk or climb ramps and stairs. On my block, I remember 15 years ago that only one person had such a permit and she had serious medical problems which did limit her ability to walk. Now, nearly half the cars on my block have such permits, though the average age of residents is much lower than it was in those days and even though I don’t know any neighbor who has a problem walking. In fact, I routinely see them take long walks with their kids or dogs. Another lawless trend I have seen in my walks is the proliferation of so-called “service dog” labeled harnesses on dogs that are obviously not trained service dogs, and that are walked by people who are obviously not blind nor in need of a service dog. The dogs are usually small and fluffy, the types which would never be considered for service dog training. I see this most often in my weekly Sunday morning walk to our Farmer’s Market. There are signs at the entrances that clearly state that dogs are not allowed except for trained service dogs. Yet, these signs are routinely ignored. Even more troubling, is that our police endorse this lawlessness by ignoring it. I have seen them ignore illegally parked cars with handicap permits at the moment young drivers bounded in or out of their car. In fact, I haven’t seen any police action in our City to stop drivers unlawfully using handicap permits. When I was at the Farmer’s Market one recent Sunday I saw the park ranger who polices the event walk right past a woman walking a small dog with the phony “service dog” harness. I went up to the ranger and asked him why he ignored such blatant disregard for the law. He just shrugged and agreed the dog was obviously not a service dog and shouldn’t be there. That’s all he did about the issue, as far as I observed. The criminologist and professor James Q. Wilson taught us what happens when a commu-
nity ignores minor crimes and their growth in frequency and types over the years. What happens is that in subsequent periods the crimes become ever more numerous and more serious. For example, the latest new trend I see on my walks is drivers running stop signs without even slowing down. In the past, drivers would stop at a stop sign. Crimes not addressed when they are small keep growing. We need to send a clear message that our City monitors criminal behavior and that it will not be tolerated. That’s what will bring back order, civility and community. Larry Mattson ****** Regarding Ari Bussel’s guest editorial in last week’s Courier, I think that the issue is personal responsibility versus the bottom line or the amount of money to be made at someone else’s expense, usually the community’s. Given that permits, I expect, are the fees the City collects for the cost of “doing business”.. maybe additional, or a portion of that money could/should be set aside to ensure affordable buildings could compete with and then be built by non-profit entities, versus those that need to make ”a buck or the most bucks” from what wasn’t personal money in the first place, rather a loan from a bank. The idea you put forward about the Four Seasons Hotel being located in Los Angeles while using the glory of Beverly Hills without the tax money going to this City isn't quite right. At the time, Hernando Courtright, the owner of The Beverly Wilshire, was determined not to allow another hotel to be built to directly compete with his or The Beverly Hills Hotel, which he formerly operated. Oh well, it went through in L.A. without being opposed by either its Planning Commission nor a certain sitting L.A. city councilman whom, I assume, you might remember. Developers are out to develop, and nonprofits have in the past made developments happen under the leadership and guidance of those in political office. But your points are so well taken. There has to be some sort of model to ensure that future generations can afford to live in Beverly Hills and those who want to downsize and have the amenities of either living in or close by to B.H. are met. How nice would it be to be able to offer low interest loans or other incentives to our first responders or educators whom we would like to see be able to afford to live in our communities. It seems that the same 30,000-35,000 people still live in Beverly Hills today as they did when I grew up here. Good luck with getting people to put on their thinking caps and visualize what progress can mean. Barbara Yaroslavsky
The ‘Summer of Love’ Is Back – At Beverly Canon Gardens Do you remember the “Summer of Love?” Some 50 years ago in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, there were young people–then dubbed “hippies”–who wore flowers, tie-dyed clothing, and paisley print Nehru jackets to protest the Vietnam War. It was a watershed year in rock music as the Beatles released their masterpiece Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album on June 1, 1967, as a tidal wave of milestone music was unleashed on the psychedelic tuned-in, turned on youth culture. Debut albums by The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, The Surrealistic Pillow album by Jefferson Airplane with White Rabbit (the ‘60s handling of Alice In Wonderland), and The
Monterey Pop Festival was held with watershed performances by Otis Redding, The Who and Janis Joplin. The Beatles songs Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and A Little Help From My Friends became anthems of the summer and The Monkees had major success with both their TV show and albums like More of The Monkees and Headquarters the one album where the Monkees performed all the songs themselves with minimal assistance from studio musicians. Beverly Hills will honor the 50th anniversary of the “Summer of Love”on Aug. 17 as Stephen Wise Temple returns to the Beverly Canon Gardens to perform a very special concert of music from 1967. Songs like Happy Together,
Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In and The Look Of Love will be performed by the amazing Wise band and singers under the direction of Cantor Nathan Lam and David Kates. Also joining will be Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback and Cantor Emma Lutz, who promises to wear “flowers in her hair” as the famous Are You Going To San Francisco? song by Scott McKenzie referenced. Featured at the concert will be author Harvey Kubernik, whose new 1967 Summer Of Love book has received critical raves from Rolling Stone and Mojo magazine. Kubernik recently spoke at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on his book. Harvey will give some insider history on the music being performed.

Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Aug. 4). You don’t have all the hard resources you need to bring your plan to life, but with moxie and determination you’ll make it happen anyway. Your supporters are important but not key. This year is about you reaching down to the depths of your soul to release your true power. Jackpot time: October and May. Gemini and Libra adore you. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). If you don’t know what enough is, how will you know if you have enough? And when you do know what enough is, you pretty much always have it. So much of this existence falls into the category of “extra.” VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Your feelings are valid and important, though sometimes only to you. The others might prefer you to be always content, and you tend to put on that face for them. Note the difference between caring and caretaking. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Those who freely offer advice without being asked are actually imposing. As a sign of honor and respect, hold back on telling others what to do unless it’s asked directly of you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). With your intuitive and empathetic gifts it is sometimes difficult to separate your feelings from the feelings of others. Do not try to leech anyone’s pain (or joy, for that matter). Feel only your own. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). To be craved is flattering; to be needed is validating. It's better, however, just to be loved. Healthy relationships are built on equality, intimacy and balance. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Putting your wishes aside is easy for you. It is much harder for you to consider your own interests and hobbies before you agree to other people’s plans, but that's what the day calls for. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Other people could compliment you from here to tomorrow, but that doesn’t change how you see yourself. Your standards are high and now you’ll work hard to meet them. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Many of your life rituals are not your own but have been handed down by society, religion, family and friends. It’s the rituals that you create or personalize that will bring meaning and significance to your life. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr.19). The old adage says loving does not require thought, only emotion. And yet the thoughts align like a magic combination to open the safe that holds those emotions. Click, click, click, and it’s open. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). Cheap thrills are still thrilling. Meaningful, lasting rewards are better, though not as acutely felt, as they lay into the foundation of who you are and become a given to your character. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). The extremes of thought aren’t so helpful now, especially when they’re taken to a negative place. All is not lost. All is never lost when there’s a future. Count the blessings and avoid those who are too focused on problems. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Learning is a process. You may see the lesson many times before it clicks in. If you don’t understand right away, don’t give up. Keep coming at the puzzle from different directions and in different hours. Special guest singers Freda Payne, who had the smash hit Band Of Gold in 1970 and Florence La Rue of the 5th Dimension will add sparkle and authenticity to the ‘60s celebration of love, peace, harmony and music. The concert will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 17 and the next night, Aug. 18, at 6:15
the next night, Aug. 18, at 6:15 p.m. at Stephen Wise Temple in Bel Air. There is a special “Summer of Love Shabbat” with a school bus to paint for kids and concert afterward. All our Beverly Hills neighbors are invited to attend both events. Could this be our City’s first “love in?” –– Hal Lifson
