City Councilman Paul Koretz this week penned a scathing letter, calling for the complete demolition of the nearly 30,000-squarefoot home in Bel Air. “There is one path forward here

and that is to designate 901 Strada Vecchia a nuisance and compel the owner to abate the hazardous conditions currently existing at the site through demolition of the project,” Koretz wrote in a letter dated June 23 to Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety General Manager Frank Bush.

By Laura Coleman Starting tomorrow, the Rodeo Drive Committee will be helmed for the next two years by Kathy DavoudiGohari, who takes over the presidency from Mark Tronstein. Gohari, who has been on the committee for more than two decades, previously served as Tronstein’s vice president for events.

The 80-member committee comprised of retailers, hoteliers, boutique managers and property owners along Beverly Hills’ most prestigious 2.5-block street is responsible for helping shape the vision of the Rodeo Drive.

By Laura Coleman The Board of Education was expected to vote this morning to extend the current Joint Powers Agreement (JPA) for two months in order to give the City of Beverly Hills and the school district a little extra time to come to a new agreement. The current $9.7 million JPA is slated to expire today.

The contract provides crucial funds to the Beverly Hills Unified School District in exchange for making the district’s facilities and fields available to the City.

The project was originally approved by the Planning Commission on June 14, 2007 and has received previous time extensions. The current one-year extension request would extend the existing entitlements until June 14, 2018. The request is being made pursuant to §10-3-207 and §10-2-206 of the Beverly Hills Municipal Code.

Conditional Use Permit. The applicant is requesting renewal of a Conditional Use Permit to allow the hotel restaurant to remain open to the public.

Development Plan Review. The applicant is requesting renewal of a Development Plan Review Permit to allow continued operation of open air dining consisting of 7 tables and 20 chairs on the Hotel’s private property, adjacent to the hotel restaurant facing Burton Way. The applicant is also requesting for the Planning Commission to determine that the parking demand for the open air dining area can continue to be met with the existing parking supply and valet operations, and additional parking is not required to be provided.

Extended Hours Permit. The applicant is requesting renewal of an Extended Hours Permit to allow continued operation of the hotel, restaurant, open air dining area, and rooftop during extended hours in a commercial-residential transition area.

This project was previously assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City, and a Negative Declaration was adopted. There have been no substantial changes to the project and no substantial changes to the environment that would cause the project to significantly impact the environment. Therefore, there is no substantial evidence that the approval of the requested extension may have any significant environmental impact. The original Negative Declaration continues to represent the independent judgment of the City, and no additional environmental review is required under CEQA.

This project has been assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City. Upon review, the project appears to qualify for exemption from CEQA. Accordingly, the Planning Commission will consider a recommendation to find the project exempt from the environmental review requirements of CEQA pursuant to Sections 15301 (minor alterations to an existing facility), 15302 (replacement or reconstruction of existing structures), and/or 15332 (in-fill development) of Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations.

BHUSD Shores Up Its Leadership Team

By Laura Coleman Just minutes before a divided Board of Education voted 3-2 on Tuesday to approve a $67.9 million 2017-18 budget for the Beverly Hills Unified School District, members expressed concern about Superintendent Michael Bregy’s decision to offer the district’s chief administrative officer a $40,000 raise in the face of the district’s looming budget deficit. The budget calls for a reduction of staffing by $5 million for next year.

City, School District Unite Against Metro SEIS At Community Meeting

By Victoria Talbot & Sam Schwartz Last Thursday's meeting on the Westside Purple Line Extension Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) left many frustrated with the draconian two-minute per person public comment periods, the prohibition on asking questions and the intentional use of bureaucracy to render public comment ineffectual.

The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) produced the SEIS in response to a Motion for Summary Judgment and Ruling in Regards to Remedies of the United States District Court for the Central District of California in Beverly Hills Unified School District v. Federal Transit Administration, et al.

The SEIS concludes that the planned tunneling under Beverly Hills High School is preferred as the alternative with the “least harm.”

The SEIS also concludes that noise and vibration thresholds would not be exceeded at BHHS in existing academic buildings, existing recreational facilities and the proposed gym, and that “any impacts that may result from new buildings at BHHS can be mitigated.”

The SEIS concludes there is no impact on air quality or gas migration; there is no seismic risk; that ridership will be higher from the Century City/Constellation station; and the use of BHHS will have no adverse impacts.

Addressing the concerns of the City of Beverly Hills were Councilmember Robert Wunderlich and City Attorney Larry Weiner.

"The school district’s position is that the proposed route for the Purple Line Extension, which runs right through the heart of the Beverly Hills High School campus, will threaten student health, disrupt their learning environment, and undermine the school district's ability to expand and modernize the campus,” said Skirde.

Bregy said he was concerned that the chosen route would affect the District’s building plans.

“The impact of building the project along the proposed alignment is not de minimis in terms of the future development of the high school,” argued Bregy. “To proceed with Building C in the face of such a shallow clearance above the tunnel, the structural modifications required to support the building could add tens of millions of dollars to the cost…”

Nominees should exemplify one or more of the following: •Acts as a role model of positive civic behavior •Takes a stand in support of respect and responsible actions •Promotes positive neighbor-toneighbor relations “We’re looking to honor someone who has created positive, lasting civil change and inspires others to take action,” said Human Relations Commission Chair for the City of Beverly Hills Jerry Friedman.

The recipient may be of any age and must be a resident of Beverly Hills, or City employee, or associated with a current business or organization that has operated in Beverly Hills for a minimum of one year.

The City was recognized in 2014 with the Livability Award by the

United States Conference of Mayors in recognition of outstanding achievement in enhancing the quality of life in urban settings for the Embrace Civility campaign.

The program consisted of three elements, including a civility pledge and recognizing an individual in the community each year with a Civility Award; the Anti-Bullying video contest, which rewarded creative video submissions from Beverly Hills junior high and high school students; and the Civil City campaign, which promotes civil streets and sidewalks by encouraging courteous behavior among motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

pon completing our week-long T&C assignment with its 40 pages of photographs and text about Buffalo, we chose to stay, on our own dime, in Toronto, which intrigued us, for the weekend.

n July 1, Canada celebrates its 150th year of independence from the U.K. And during the mid-1960s, Canada fell into our lap, where its remained forever to our delight. he flight was delayed hours at LAX before taking off, and near the Midwest we encountered ominous rumblings with warnings of a severe storm.

Unsettling.

Beyond Chicago, the storm exploded. Lightning, thunder, pounding rain. Unnerving turbulence, worse as we approached Canada.

ur Greek heritage deemed that the best parties always included all ages. And that husbands and wives should be separated, which, at first, created a ridiculous kerfuffle, that mercifully faded.

But, hey, such is the rulebook of protocol.

U.S. News scores children’s hospitals as a distinct group because caring for children and youth requires specialized expertise, equipment and facilities designed to meet patient needs. Ultimately, the hospitals with the 10 highest scores are placed on an honor roll after being assessed and ranked in 10 pediatric specialties.

For the 2017-18 rankings, CHLA’s comprehensive score placed it #6 overall in the United States out of a field of 113 pediatric medical centers that qualified for inclusion in the survey, with seven of the hospital’s clinical specialty areas scoring in the top 10 among their peers nationally.

“The magazine’s rankings are based on an assessment of complex data from each hospital surveyed, including metrics for health outcomes, national stature, signature programs and level of expertise,” said James Stein, MD, chief medical officer. “As a result, the Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll

rankings are considered to be a global measure of a hospital’s ability to provide the best care for children.”

Overall, CHLA equaled or improved its national ranking in eight categories compared to last year’s survey results. For 2017-18, CHLA’s programs in Orthopaedics, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery and Cardiology and Heart Surgery moved up two spots each to #6, #7 and #8, respectively. Diabetes and Endocrinology advanced three places to the #5 slot; Neonatology moved up one place to #6; and Neurology & Neurosurgery jumped six spots to #10. Cancer finished at #9 and Urology came at #16. Both Pulmonology and Nephrology each ranked #18 in the nation, with the former program gaining one place and the latter gaining six. CHLA earned top-20 recognition in each of the specialty areas evaluated.

CHLA is one of the nation’s premier teaching hospitals through its affiliation with the USC’s Keck School of Medicine since 1932.

CHLA is also home to The Saban Research Institute; and since the 2011 opening of CHLA’s inpatient tower, the Marion and John E. Anderson Pavilion, the hospital has achieved Magnet re-designation for nursing.

In 2016, CHLA was recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NACE) as a Level 4 epilepsy center.

Pacific Neuroscience Institute, Providence Health & Services Saint John’s Medical Foundation Affiliate To Advance Care Of Neurological, Cranial Disorders Providence Health & Services has announced a new affiliation with the Pacific Neuroscience Institute, a multispecialty group of more than 30 physicians and researchers known for providing minimally invasive treatments, as well as conducting research and clinical trials to advance the care of patients with neurological and cranial disorders.

The physicians of PNI will join the Saint John’s Medical Foundation, composed of Westside physician groups with a range of specialties who practice at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica. The new PNI Clinic is currently under construction at 2125 Arizona Ave., adjacent to Saint John’s Health Center, and is expected to open early next year.

PNI physicians will also provide neurosurgery, interventional neuro-radiology and neuro-oncology inpatient care and emergency stroke center services, as well as operate an outpatient clinic at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance.

“Our partnership with PNI brings a team of extraordinary specialists, their state-of-theart facilities and their globally recognized research to Providence Saint John’s and its John Wayne Cancer Institute, and to our South Bay hospitals,” said Erik Wexler, chief executive, Providence St. Joseph Health, L.A. region. “More importantly, they will participate in our Neuroscience Clinical Institute, which serves across the seven-state Providence St. Joseph Health system to advance treatment and improve outcomes for

patients with complex neurological disorders.”

Renters, Landlords Encouraged To Attend Facilitated Dialogues on Rent Stabilization

By Victoria Talbot The City of Beverly Hills will be conducting facilitated dialogues with landlords and tenants to develop a “fair and balanced rent stabilization ordinance,” according to the public notices.

Landlords and tenants are strongly encouraged to attend these meetings to accurately represent the scope of the issues for both parties.

In the past, it has been renters who are most vulnerable, including families, elderly and disabled, who have been reluctant to come

forward during the tenant-landlord forums conducted by the Human Relations Commission.

Many renters have reported they are fearful of retaliation, such as rent increases and/or evictions, after going on record at the forums with their complaints.

Dialogue sessions will be held at the Roxbury Park Community Center, 7-10 p.m., July 10, July 12, July 17 and July 25.

The City has engaged Associate Director of the Strauss Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University Sukhsim-

ranjit Singh as the facilitator. Singh will act as an impartial facilitator at each of the dialogue sessions.

The information collected will be presented to the City Council at the meeting on July 18 at 7 p.m. to assist in further developing the rent stabilization ordinance.

Here are some options for enjoying your 4th of July in the greater Los Angeles area.

Holmby Hills: One of the closest events to Beverly Hills is the Holmby Westwood Property Owners Association’s 4th of July picnic and parade. The annual event kicks off at 10 a.m. at Warner Avenue School and features a parade, food and drinks, kid-friendly activities such as an obstacle course, and a free grocery giveaway from Whole Foods.

Culver City: West L.A. College hosts the 2017 Culver City fireworks show. Gates open at 4 p.m. and fireworks begin at dusk. Admission is $5 per person, and cover band Rebel Rebel will perform classic rock hits.

Dodger Stadium: The Dodgers take on the Arizona Diamondbacks, but stick around after the game for a special fireworks show. Everyone entering the stadium gets a free, limited-edition patriotic Dodgers t-shirt.

Hollywood Bowl: Pentatonix plays this year’s Hollywood Bowl July 4th show, complete with a postconcert fireworks display.

Last month, Hadid - through his attorney Robert Shapiro - pled no contest to charges. A sentencing hearing that was set for June 27 had to be rescheduled because Superior Court Judge Eric Harmon is engaged in trial on a separate case. According to Tina Hess of the L.A. city attorney’s office, the hearing was tentatively planned to be rescheduled for the week of July 10, but no date has been set as of press time.

According to a proposed sentencing memorandum prepared by the city attorney’s office, city prosecutors are asking that Hadid be placed on three years probation and be ordered to perform 200 hours of community labor and pay $3,000 in fines. Prosecutors are also calling for him to pay $250,000 into a community improvement fund.

Koretz was adamant in his letter that regardless of what penalties Hadid himself specifically faces, the home itself should be torn down.

The councilman specifically took aim at new plans that had been submitted, which are for a project that is very similar to what currently stands at the site, despite having already taken actions that require discretionary entitlements and CEQA review.

Bosse Brings ‘Healthy City’ To U. S. Mayors' Conference In Miami Beach

By Victoria Talbot Beverly Hills Mayor Lili Bosse brought the Beverly Hills Healthy City Initiative to the United States Conference of Mayors in Miami Beach, this past week, culminating in a resolution recognizing the City's Healthy City initiative and encouragement for cities across the country to "advance community health and wellness."

The resolution passed unanimously, and was adopted by the Conference.

The 85th United States Conference of Mayors is an organization that sets policy objectives and acts as a collective voice of municipalities and their leaders. Task forces and committees work to develop policies and strategies that the entire body votes on to approve before sending their resolutions to elected leaders in Washington.

Issues include Homeland Security, economic recovery and homelessness.

As a group, the mayors have significant influence promoting policy. Now, the Conference of Mayors have joined Mayor Bosse in putting the health of their communities in focus, and in rec-

ognizing the City of Beverly Hills as a Healthy City.

The resolution specifically points out the following parts of Bosse's Healthy City initiative: - Health and Wellness programs and policies that focus on the individual, the business community and the local government, Walk with the Mayor, SOUL (Seeking Original Unique Learning) Sessions with Deepak Chopra, the BOLD initiative (Businesses Open Later Days), the Sunshine Task Force and transparency in government, such as the open Mayor’s cabinet meetings that are now televised. "...Be it resolved, that The United States Conference of Mayors recognizes the efforts the City of Beverly Hills has undertaken to encourage a collective Healthy City approach to governing; and be it further resolved, that The United States Conference of Mayors will encourage all cities to develop initiatives and programs to advance community health and wellness."

2017-18 Team Beverly Hills Announced: 42 Members Strong

By Victoria Talbot The City has announced the 42 members selected for the 2017-18 Team Beverly Hills leadership and educational program this week.

Participants will be part of a 21year legacy that has empowered residents to be better citizens and hopefully, to participate in government and civic affairs.

Since 1996, nearly 650 residents have successfully completed Team Beverly Hills, and many have gone on to become leaders and volunteers.

Currently, 6-percent of the City’s commissioners graduated from Team Beverly Hills. Many more serve as volunteers and assist in City programs.

Participants are selected by lottery and by City Council members from applications, and two participants are students from BHUSD. This year, the City had 75 applicants.

Over the course of seven months, team members will participate in demonstrations, walks, lectures and discussions with City leaders, depart-

ment heads, community and business leaders to learn how each part works and how the City functions.

“We are excited for our future leaders and volunteers who will participate in this unique, informative and interactive experience,” said Gisele Grable, Community Services administrator.

Born in London to Persian parents, Gohari’s earliest life was spent moving around the world, including stints in Canada and Italy, before her family eventually moved to Santa Monica. She said her formative experiences have been particularly helpful in her professional life, both in terms of her experience with languages as well as her ability to relate to people.

As president of the committee, Gohari will help shepherd in a new era for the group that was founded in 1972

With Michael Leoni’s Hit Play, Audiences Don’t Mind Being Stuck In This Elevator After being stuck briefly in an elevator, playwright Michael Leoni wondered what the reaction would be if that really happened. How would the occupants react?

His response was first a short film, Someplace In Between, about a disparate group of people forced together in a confined space, that he developed into the play Elevator in 2010. It’s had several local incarnations, and has been playing since March at the Coast Playhouse (8325 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood) where its now been extended through Sunday, July 30.

Audiences have been enthusiastic about the 90-minute play where they meet seven characters, listed in the program simply as archetypes ——a CEO Woman, Business Man, Office Temp, Hot Girl, Musician, Maintenance Man and Goth Girl—trapped in an elevator, who shed their masks and reveal who they really are.

People are seeing the play multiple times and staying after to talk, says Coproducer Michelle Kaufer. “It’s becoming a thing.”

The piece strikes a chord in audiences, Kaufer says, because it’s about connection. “At the end of the day we all want the same thing. We all have a deep human need to love and be loved. I think, like me, audiences relate to the

characters and what they’re going through.”

Co-producer and set and lighting director David Goldstein credits Leoni’s innovative direction with much of the play’s Michael Leoni success.

In musical numbers by Mario Marchetti, characters express their inner thoughts and their anger and annoyance with each other.

To immerse audiences in the character’s’ plight, they are greeted—in a space that appears to be under construction— by a security guard who asks what floor they’re going to.

Using cinematic slow-motion and time-lapse techniques, “David is able to show the first hour the characters are stuck in the elevator, when no one talks, in 30 seconds,” says Kaufer. “And we feel like we’re in there with them.”

“I was only stuck for a minute,” says Leoni of his play’s inspirational experience. “But I always wonder why people act the way they do, and what’s beneath the surface.”

Comedian Nanjiani’s The Big Sick Is Touching Love Story With Timely Message At first look at the title The Big Sick, I thought it was “The Big Stick” and believed it to be about President Theodore Roosevelt (for you non-historians…look it up). Fortunately, it wasn’t.

The Big Sick is based on a true story written by Pakistani comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, about their courtship and eventual marriage.

It is a good heartfelt and funny story starring Nanjiani, a struggling comedian, as himself and an excellent Zoe Kazan as Emily.

They meet during one of Kumail’s standup performances when Emily, a grad student, emits a loud screech. He confronts her following his set and their conversation turns into, what they believe to be, only a one-night stand. It’s not.

And, a close relationship follows with two major problems. The biggest, at first, is his being a Muslim with traditional no-nonsense parents. After meeting Kumail’s parents Emily decides not to go further with their relationship as she believes their cultures will never bind together. The second problem and much more severe, comes out-of-the-blue and nearly takes Emily’s life. To save her life the doctors place Emily in an induced coma.

Kumail promises his parents that he will eventually marry a nice Muslim girl they pick out for him. There are many laughs with a parade of perspective brides invited by his mother to their dinner table.

When he tries to visit her in the hospital, his attempts to see Emily are thwarted by her parents, played with humor and

Realizing that Emily in her current state, might die and he could possibly lose her forever, he makes a last-ditch effort to be next to her.

Kumail succeeds and vows never to be apart from her again. There is laughter, there are tears, but the couple proves that love is stronger than thousands of years of strict family culture.

Perhaps, just perhaps, Nanjiani and Gordon have written a love story that will shatter the broken ceilings that inflict the world with so much death, grief and anxiety. At least it’s a beginning. The rest is up to us. 3 Bagels and a Schmear out of 4

The Modified Project includes up to 90 condominium units. Thus, an amended Vesting Tentative Tract Map is required for the Modified Project.

The subject project has been assessed in accordance with the authority and criteria contained in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the State CEQA Guidelines, and the environmental regulations of the City.

The City has prepared an Addendum to an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for changes to the previously Approved Project, for which the City certified a Final EIR in 2007. This Addendum serves as the CEQA documentation for the proposed Modified Project. According to Section 15164 of the State CEQA Guidelines, an addendum to a previously certified EIR or Negative Declaration is the appropriate environmental document in instances when “only minor technical changes or additions are necessary” and when the changes or additions do not involve significant effects not discussed in the previous EIR or significant effects that are substantially more severe than those previously examined in the previous EIR. The Addendum prepared for the Modified Project contains an environmental impact analysis that compares the impacts of the Modified Project to those of the Approved Project as identified in the 2007 FEIR. This analysis indicates that the Modified Project would not result in any new significant environmental impacts or any substantial increase in the severity of previously identified significant environmental impacts as compared to the Approved Project. Consequently, the Planning Commission will consider the prepared Addendum as the appropriate environmental document for the Modified Project under CEQA. they are expected to carry out on the government’s behalf.”

In this recent case, the district attorney of Riverside County was seeking to prosecute Sahlolbel under Section 1090 for allegedly influencing the public hospital where he worked to hire another doctor and then profiting from that doctor’s contract without the knowledge of the board.

The ruling specifically cited the facts of People v. Christiansen as an example of the “perverse consequences of exempting independent contractors from Section 1090.”

In 2012, Christiansen was convicted by a jury as a criminal for self-dealing for having entered into a sole-sourced contract with a company she founded, Strategic Concepts, LLC, through her role as BHUSD’s facilities chief. That conviction was subsequently overturned on appeal with that court ruling that Christiansen was not subject to Gov. Code Section 1090 because she was an independent contractor. In 2015, L.A. Superior Court Judge Stephen Czuleger adopted the Appeal Court’s determination, subsequently ruling that BHUSD breached its 2008 contract with Christiansen’s firm. That ruling in turn opened the door for that jury’s determination that she was a victim and was owed almost $20 million.

BHUSD attorney Fred Fenster, a partner with Greenberg Glusker said he is certain that the district will not have to pay Christiansen the amount from that verdict, which has been steadily creeping north with interest. If anything, he said, Christiansen will likely wind up reimbursing the district millions of dollars once the Court of Appeal confirms that the district properly terminated its contract with Christiansen and her company.

Stated Fenster: “In light of the California Supreme Court’s decision, it is highly likely that the trial court’s award against the Beverly Hills Unified School District will be reversed, and a new trial ordered that will permit the district to submit all the evidence establishing that Karen Christiansen violated Section 1090 and should be required to repay the more than $4 million she received from the District.”

Fenster said he expected that oral arguments on that appeal will be scheduled within the next 60 days with the decision anticipated to come about 90 days after the hearing.

“We believe that the Supreme Court's decision will enable the district to prove in a new trial that Karen Christiansen not only violated Section 1090 when she personally negotiated a $16 million contract for her own benefit, but that she should also be ordered to reimburse the district for the $4 million it paid to her,” BHUSD Superintendent Michael Bregy said.

“I am beaming with excitement,” effused Mayor Lili Bosse before presenting Alagem with a City proclamation and proclaiming June 28 “Waldorf Astoria Day in Beverly Hills.”

“This is, in my mind ... the best day for Beverly Hills,” said Bosse, who was also mayor three years ago at the time of the ground-breaking ceremony. “Not only is this hotel going to change the face of Beverly Hills forever, it’s going to change the way people think of Beverly Hills worldwide as well as how we, as residents, feel about our City.”

During Alagem’s more than 20minute “thank you” speech at Wednesday’s ceremony, he recognized dozens of individuals who helped bring the hotel into existence.

From a building team that at times included 700 people on site to a bevy of City officials who helped Alagem’s team negotiate a complex political landscape, Alagem’s speech was both touching and unifying. Of particular note was his recognition of the widow of marble installer Jaime Cerda who passed away just three weeks ago.

“Her husband was here day in and day out,” he said. “We will never forget him. Every time I walked through these doors, he was there with a smile, putting every stone in perfection.”

BEVERLY HILLS L O N G T I M E R E S I D E N T DIES – Helene Marie Seeberger died late last month at age 98 in an Arizona hospice. She was executive secretary for the Greg Juarez Art Gallery and a hostess for both the Juarez Gallery Foundation and the Film Advisory Board.

Born in Iowa on March 22, 1919, she lived in Davenport, Chicago and San Francisco before settling in Beverly Hills in 1971 where she remained for several decades. She is survived by her son F. Randall Schlack, her daughter Mary C. Tirado, two grandchildren and a great-grandson.

With construction thus trapped in limbo, students could be left in ill-equipped bungalows for an unknown period of time,” said Artal.

Regarding the SEIS statements on potential emissions, Wiener stated that “All of the emissions associated with that mineshaft will be feet from the high school,” (Editor’s note: there were no specifics offered about the exact distance) citing concerns that the contractor will not adhere to the extremely stringent mitigation standards required in the EIS. Hacker and Board President Mel Spitz were the two “no” votes to approve the budget, stating their concern that the City and school district had yet to reach a solution on continuing the $9.7 million Joint Powers Agreement, which represents a substantial portion of the district’s budget. Latham has been integrally involved in negotiating a new JPA between the school district and the City.

As part of Latham’s new two-year contract, which also changes her title to assistant superintendent/business services, Latham will receive a $250 monthly auto allowance and a $150 monthly cell phone allowance. For the 2018-19 school year, Latham’s contract increases her salary to $220,000.

According to expert analysis, Metro has under-represented toxic emission impacts from trucks idling in the staging area by assuming emissions from those trucks and other heavy equipment are diluted across large construction areas. In fact, they will be concentrated near the fence line of the school -- right next to portable classrooms.

“Given the close proximity of the construction to the campus, we’re extremely concerned it will cause significant dust and odor impacts - which will have an adverse effect on learning, recreation, and student life and health.

“It's the school district’s position that Metro can and should move the staging area from the fence line of the campus, to the empty JMB lot at

Constellation and Avenue of the Stars. It also should adjust the alignment of the route, which can be cost-effectively modified to serve commuters without putting Beverly Hills High School’s historic structures or expansion plans at risk.

We urge Metro to adopt alternatives that will allow the project to proceed, without harming the Beverly Hills community.”

In the fall, the Federal Transportation Authority will publish the Final SEIS with responses to the comments; they will then determine if changes to the project are required.

Latham told the Courier that had she not received the salary increase, she would have left BHUSD to become the associate superintendent at Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District - a position she was offered last Friday.

Before the board’s 3-2 vote, Bregy underscored how crucial Latham was to the district.

“This position is a position that I count on seven days a week and will continue to count on seven days a week,” he said. “The salary for [Latham] is commensurate with her years of service that she has in the district and her experience in the position.”

Tuesday, the board voted unanimously to hire Dustin Seemann to replace Jen Tedford as its new chief academic officer, giving him an annual base salary of $180,000 and the title of assistant superintendent, education services. Tedford submitted her resignation earlier this month after two decades working for BHUSD to become the principal of El Segundo High School. Seemann will cross the country to come to Beverly Hills, leaving his position as director of Professional Learning and Student Services at Township High School District 214 in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

In closed session, the board voted 5-0 to hire Juliet Fine to replace Dana Findley as the new principal at Horace Mann. Fine previously worked as the Assistant Principal at William S. Hart Union High School District in Santa Clarita.

Findley will return to the high school where she will once again reprise her position as the dance teacher there.

Last Friday, in the absence of a new agreement, the City sent out an e-mail to people planning to participate in summer programs offered by the City’s Community Service Department. City spokesperson Therese Kosterman said that 540 people are currently registered for summer programs located at school district sites next week.

“Should the City and the district be unable to reach an agreement on use or rental of the District property, it is possible that your program or your child's program will be relocated or cancelled as of July 3,” the email stated.

In response to the City’s email, on Monday Bregy emailed BHUSD staff, parents and the community a detailed memo on the district’s position.

“If the JPA expires, the City will not have a contract in place to allow residents, organizations, and groups to continue to use BHUSD facilities,” Bregy’s e-mail stated.

When the City Council countered with an offer that was unpalatable to the school district, Goldstein subsequently asked the City Council liaison representatives to agree to a four-year contract that began at $12.5 million for the first year and incrementally racheted up $500,000 each subsequent year.

However, even beyond the monetary terms, there are still myriad elements of the contract that the two sides have yet to reach a consensus.

The City Council is slated to discuss the JPA at its Thursday evening meeting, which will occur after the Courier’s press time. As long as the Council votes to move forward with the proposed amendment, the Board of Education will likely follow suit at its Friday morning meeting.

The community is urged to attend this morning’s 11 a.m. meeting at the BHUSD district office.

The planning commission hearing is to permit the hotel restaurant to remain open to the public.

The applicant also requested a renewal of the DPR for the open-air dining facing Burton Way and retention of current parking and valet operations, and an Extended Hours Permit for the hotel, restaurant, openair dining area and rooftop in a commercial-residential transition area.

The hearing will be held at 1:30 p.m. July 13 at City Hall.

Cancer Support Community L.A./the Benjamin Center (CSC) hosted its Gilda Award Gala at the InterContinental in Century City.

Chaired by Judy Caruthers, the gala was named after the late, legendary comic Gilda Radner. Comedienne Sandra Valls emceed the event and quoted Gildfa as saying: “I have a theory that cancer cells hate laughter, songs, jokes and dancing.”

Board Chair Ann Benjamin, daughter of Cancer Support Community founders Harold and Harriet Benjamin, welcomed more than 250 guests, reinforcing her parents’ vision “that no one should face cancer alone.” She continued: “Today there are 45 locations nationwide with over 100 satellites.” Before leaving the stage, she took a moment to acknowledge three founding board members; Joyce Eisenberg Keefer, Chuck Hershson and awardee, Ruth Weil.

Sister Maureen Craig of Saint John’s Health Center offered a moving tribute to long-time Cancer Support Community champion and past honoree Joyce Green who passed away earlier this year.

Dikla Benzeevi, a cancer survivor since 2002, movingly spoke of her battle with the disease.

Sharon Weil presented the evening’s Wellness Award to her mother, Ruth Weil, who accepted on behalf of herself and her late husband, Martin. The Weils were raised with the principle that charitable giving was a family value. The Weil Family Room at the CSC was named in their honor. Ruth is an active boardmember of the John Wayne Cancer Institute where she established the Ruth and Martin H. Weil Laboratory for Cancer Research, and also serves on boards at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, and the Cancer Oncology Research Institute.

Dr. Bernie Salick gave the “Harold H. Benjamin Innovation Award” to Dr. Deane Wolcott, a renowned, UCLA-trained psychiatrist and expert on psychosocial support services in oncology and palliative care. Earlier this year, he received the “Holland Distinguished Leadership Award.” He has been active in Cedars Sinai’s Samuel Oschin Cancer Center for many years. ****** City Year L.A.’s 7th annual “Spring Break: Destination Education” is its largest fundraising event as well as a fun party open to teens, tweens and adults in support of education. A brass ensemble from the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles will perform the Star Spangled Banner at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday, July 5. Information relative to apprenticeship standards and administration of the apprenticeship program may be obtained from the Director of Industrial Relations, San Francisco, California, or from the Division of Apprenticeship Standards and its branch offices.

PAYROLL RECORDS - The Contractor's attention is directed to Section 1776 of the Labor Code, relating to accurate payroll records, which imposes responsibility upon the Contractor for the maintenance, certification, and availability for inspection of such records for all persons employed by the Contractor or by the Subcontractors in connection with the project. The Contractor shall agree through the Contract to comply with this section and the remaining provisions of the Labor Code.

INSURANCE AND BOND REQUIREMENTS - The Contractor shall provide insurance in accordance with Section 3-13 of the City of Beverly Hills, Public Works Department, Standard Contractual Requirements, included as part of these Specifications. All Subcontractors listed shall attach copies of the Certificate of Insurance naming the Contractor as the additional insured as part of their insurance policy coverage. In addition, the Contractor shall guarantee all work against defective workmanship and materials furnished by the Contractor for a period of one (1) year from the date the work was completed in accordance with Section 2-11 of the Standard Contractual Requirements.

The Contractor’s sureties for the “Performance Bond” shall be liable for any work that the Contractor fails to replace within a specified time.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR “Hey Rob, wanna go for a bike ride”?

What–where–when? Monday at 7 a.m. on Santa Monica Boulevard–no more “Walking with the Mayor,” it’s now “Biking with the Mayor.”

Are you crazy? Biking along Santa Monica Boulevard. At rush hour, that’s beyond dangerous.

“No, it’s the best time—especially when drivers offer you some of their coffee. They see us, roll down their window and, because of the distance, kind of toss it at us. I carry a cup and am able to catch much of the hot liquid.

And it’s safe. The professional bikers from the Energy Enhancement Thru Chemistry and Cycling Club assured us the luminescent, phosphorescent, effervescent striping would protect us from any stray autos. And cycling will remove all the carbonated footprints from our streets.

What about the non-carbonated or sans gas footprints, I asked? “That too,” my friend replied.

Well, won’t the bicyclists slow down traffic and what if an auto should stray or heaven forbid a biker stray out of the tape mark barriers?

No worry, studies at the Lance (whatever his name is?) Institute show that drivers angered by the presence of cyclists will actually speed up thus causing traffic to move along even faster.

And, if by chance an auto should swerve to avoid a straying biker and crash into other autos—well, isn’t that what no-fault insurance is for?

In a related item, the $200,000, weight challenged, white bicycle rack or “IO” sculpture, will no longer be available to non-Beverly Hills residents. It will be set into the middle of the Lily Pond and only our residents will be ferried out to the rack to chain their bikes.

Robert Block ****** Kudos to Ari Bussel for his “Letter to the Editor” last week regarding a developer’s plan to renovate the Crescent Drive mini park and the adjacent building. Years ago, this was a Ralph’s grocery store and the developers went through a lot to finally get this building constructed.

Now, since they want to add more height and square footage to their building, they are renovating the adjacent park, which they were required to establish in the first place in order to build the existing structure.

What is with our City!!?? Robert Weisman ****** No need to tell anyone about the traffic mess, as expected, that the construction of Santa Monica Boulevard is causing. Therefore, I was thinking:

(1) What if all the delivery trucks–in particular the armored trucks—only could deliver from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.? I saw a Brinks vehicle parked haphazardly on Camden one morning and asked a pleasant officer on a bicycle why he was not giving out a parking ticket but his answer puzzled me. He said that these guards are so paranoid, he is not going to risk his life to do so. He also made mention that the police force also get “concerned.”

A former BHPD chief had once notified the City Council that fines would often help solve the traffic and parking issues. However, as expected, the council would not do it as the poor business owners will have to wake up early and the Chamber of Commerce, of course, would stand by the merchants.

(2) Also, get rid of the great number of tourist buses. Let them park on the outskirts of the City and not enter into the City, which will result in far less traffic congestion..

Recently, a “nut-case” with two large dogs (taller than my 4-year old companion grandchild) in Rite-Aid took my phone from my hand and threatened me while I was speaking to the police in this regard. BHPD arrived after 20 minutes and I had to stop following him to point him out to the officers. What is curious is that they obviously were more interested in listening to my statement and so they never located the person.

Why are we allowing pets into the pharmacies, supermarkets etc.? Makes no sense to me.

Forget dog bites, many people are allergic to them when they shed, etc.

Sunset Boulevard has become a speed-way night and day. In particular, every Wednesday from 10:30 p.m., there is a tremendous (and extremely worrisome) loud noise when a group of race cars or motorcycles cruise Sunset. This would be a great time to make some additional and needed new income for the City.

Of course, on the supposed quiet weekends especially, the noise is intolerable. Please make arrangements with the sheriff and the L.A. police to dedicate some weekends to cite these dangerous vandals (I have sent multiple letters with dozens of signatures to the City).

Then, of course, is the lingering situation of the Bijan parking spot on Rodeo Drive, which is protected somehow by the store’s employees.

You and I can’t park there as it was not the intent of the encroachment (which needs to go) nor should the Bijan people be allowed to stay there more than two hours. That just happens to be the law.

I have received no answer to any of these problems. Perhaps we can go back to the days when there was interaction between our people and the BHPD. Pablo Nankin, MD
