By Victoria Talbot Beverly Hills residents came seeking answers Wednesday evening when Writers Bloc Presents founder Andrea Grossman created a panel of experts to discuss what homeowners can do to address water issues.

Panelists included Bill McDonnell, efficiency manger for the Metropolitan Water District; Pamela Berstler of Green Gardens Group (G3); Pioneer Hardware Manager Ryan Hudson; and former Beverly Hills Mayor Dr. Charles Aronberg at Temple

City To Hold Community Workshop On Southeast-Metro Planning

By Victoria Talbot The City of Beverly Hills is asking the public to participate in a series of planning meetings to envision southeast Beverly Hills, especially the features associated with the future subway station at La Cienega and Wilshire Boulevards.

The first neighborhood event will be Wednesday, July1 from 7-9 p.m. at the La Cienega Park Community Center, 8400 Gregory Way. Through the workshops, residents, business owners and other stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide input on amenities, revitalization possi-

bilities and “mobility enhancements” for the station, providing “First-Mile, Last-Mile” connectivity to Metro riders.

The workshop will also encompass work already completed by the City’s Southeast Taskforce, a coalition of southeast residents, business owners and City staff committed to revitalizing the Southeast neighborhood of Beverly Hills. Future workshops will focus on other areas, including Wilshire, Robertson, and the Olympic corridors.

Measure E Bond: The Board of Education voted 3-2 to issue the third series of Measure E school building bonds for $76 million. The bonds will be entirely Current Interest Bonds (CIBs) with a repayment ratio of 1.25-to-1, which averages out to a property tax increase to $65 per 100,000 of assessed value. Board VP Howard Goldstein, who voted yes along with Boardmembers Lisa Korbatov and Lewis Hall, underscored that the average property owner would pay a “mere” $195 per year over the life of the bond. The decision to forgo issuing any Capital Appreciation Bonds (CABs) on this coming draw is good news for a community that was hoodwinked into believing they wouldn’t see any increase in property taxes. CABs can have a 10-to-1 repayment ratio that would unfairly burden future property owners.

Building Schools: Last Friday, the Board of Education gave direction to HMC Architects to move ahead with developing full plans for the redevelopment at El Rodeo and Hawthorne at a total estimated cost for both of $147 million. Both schools are poised to begin reconstruction next year.

New Principals: On June 30, the Board of Education is expected to approve the hire of new principals for Beverly Hills High School and Hawthorne, in addition to a new BHHS athletic director and a new chief of facilities. “We feel real strongly about the candidates we have [and] we’re very happy,” said interim Superintendent Steve Kessler. Paysinger vs. BHUSD: The Board of Education approved a $685,000 settlement with Beverly Hills High School Principal Carter Paysinger, whose last day with the district is June 30. The settlement means that his lawsuit against the district alleging discrimination will not move forward. It also means that Paysinger will not have to further address his failure to report payments made to the Beverly Hills Sports Academy, which he owns, on his legally-required Statement of Economic Interests Form 700 while he was BHHS principal. “The district did not admit guilt and our (insurance) carrier is paying two-thirds of the cost,” Board President Brian Goldberg said. Paysinger’s attorney Reed Aljian did not respond to a request for comment.

Creative Criminal: Former Beverly Hills Unified School District employee Tapscott-Bazzi, who was arrested on Sept. 12 by BHPD on the belief she had stolen $21,000 from the BHUSD, entered a no contest plea last Thursday in court and has not been convicted of a felony - grand theft. She was placed on formal felony probation, given credit for the days she spent in custody, ordered to complete 180 days of community service, and ordered to pay the BHUSD $21,405 in restitution. “It is sad that an employee felt the need to steal from our students and staff,” Board of Education Brian Goldberg said.

Wanda Group Introduces ‘One Beverly Hills’ Lawsuit Alleges Transparency

By Victoria Talbot The Wanda Group announced plans for 9900 Wilshire Blvd. (the former Robinsons-May Department Store) Tuesday, including renaming the property “One Beverly Hills” and building a 134-room boutique luxury hotel inside one of the two residential towers that had already been approved for the site.

The 8-acre site was sold with entitlement for two luxury condominium towers. The project had been through dozens of community and city council meetings in the planning process to gain approval from the City.

For Preservation, Brenda Levin & Associates Architects was acknowledged for its work on the fully restored Wilshire Boulevard Temple. Built in

1929, the iconic temple required the removal, repair and reinstallation of the 100-ton, 25-foot diameter rose window.

This rescued historic landmark is in large part due to a pledge of $30 million over 15 years, the largest single gift ever made to a synagogue in Los Angeles, from Erika Glazer.

Beverly Hills Wins For Two Buildings at the 45th Annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards

By Victoria Talbot The design awards season kicked off last week with the 45th annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards hosted by the Los Angeles Business Council at The Beverly Hilton.

Over 600 building and design professionals came to hear 2014 Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Shigeru Ban deliver the keynote address.

Known for his minimalist designs made of non-traditional materials, the Japanese architect also constructs inexpensive emergency housing for disaster victims from recycled paper material.

Notably, Beverly Hills was recognized for two projects, confirming the City’s heritage of fine architecture and design.

The ever-changing landscape within Beverly Hills attracts many of the world’s finest architects, continuously growing the City’s exceptional architectural heritage.

Among the hundreds of nominations, three-dozen design teams were recognized, including three inside Beverly Hills.

In the category of Design Concept, 8600 Wilshire was recognized for the “mountain

village” feeling. A mixed-use building with ground-level retail, the village hovers above the street cloaked in a distinctive shroud of green droughtresistant ivy. Condos, townhomes and villas of glass surround a shared courtyard. The building design reflects MAD Architect founder Ma Yansong’s philosophy of creating neighborhood in a model of urban density.

Also winning for Design Concept is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with Executive Architect Gensler. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, the new Academy incorporates and reimagines the restored Wilshire May Company building, adding six stories of exhibition space, theaters, education studios, special event spaces and conservation areas with the addition of a café and store.

The building contains a museum with traditional theaters and a new kind of space which envelopes the viewer in film, erasing the separation between the viewer and the environment.

The Gores Group Headquarters design by architect Belzberg Architects Group is a complete reconstruction of a 1960s building. With the addition of a new garage and rooftop lounge, upgrades were needed in mechanical, structural and electrical work.

The resulting structure is a double-skin façade with custom slumped safety glass and CNC milled stone skin with an undulating roof canopy. At night, the fantastical light play illuminates the building from within the glowing skin.

Located at a busy intersection, the cladding system shields the building from noise and reduces heat gain between the envelope.

Other winners include several water-wise projects recognized with the Department of Water and Power Community Impact Award Landscape Design Competition for residential, commercial and industrial architecture.

The Grand Prize was awarded for the Hollyhock House, city of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering. The residence, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, is a National Historic Landmark and nominated as a World Heritage site, exemplifying the enduring archetype of indoor-outdoor living that has become so relevant to Los Angeles today.

Lynda Boone Fetter, Arnold Kleiner To Head Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Board Of Trustees Lynda Boone Fetter and Arnold “Arnie” Kleiner have been elected co-chairs of the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) Board of Trustees, and will succeed outgoing board Co-chairs Cathy Siegel Weiss and Ted Samuels on July 1.

“Lynda Boone Fetter and Arnie Kleiner have distinguished themselves in service and leadership at CHLA,” says Richard D. A member of the board since 2004, Boone Fetter most recently chaired the Compensation Committee and previously served as chair of the Nominating Committee. In addition, she was integral to the creation of the Boone Fetter Clinic within the Institute of the Developing Mind, which provides innovative and comprehensive care for thousands of children facing autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Fetter LLC and principal of Samuelson & Fetter LLC, a premier development firm in Los Angeles. For more than 30 years, she and husband Blaine have founded several private real estate and development firms.

She also has served as president of The Caltech Associates and on the boards of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council and Rancho Los Alamitos. She is a member of the advisory board for the Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies at USC, and is a former board member of the USC School of Planning and Public Policy and School of Philanthropy.

She is a member of Annenberg Alchemy and the Everychild Foundation, and a former executive committee member of the Foothills YMCA. She and her husband Blaine live in Pasadena.

Kleiner has spent more than three decades advancing the missions of children’s hospitals across the nation. As a member of the CHLA board since 2002, he has served on the Executive, Safety and Quality, and Service and Access committees. He also immediately preceded Boone Fetter as chair of the Compensation Committee.

He is a longstanding CHLA benefactor, most notably in supporting the annual broadcast of the Emmy Award-winning ABC7 television special, Imagine: A Celebration Of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Kleiner has worked for more than 45 years in broadcast media; and was most recently president and general manager of KABC-TV, a position he began in 1996.

Kleiner also serves on the board of the Los Angeles chapter of Autism Speaks and is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the L.A. Multicultural Leadership Coalition.

An Army veteran, Kleiner has worked in New York, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Baltimore. He and wife Carol live in Los Angeles.

Beverly Hills was one of the charter cities that started the MWD.” he said McDonnell explained that because the water coming from the L.A. aqueduct was insufficient to feed Southern California’s growing population, several cities came together to build infrastructure to bring water from the upper Colorado River and from the Sierra snowpack to their districts.

A “mega-drought” is deteremined when there no longer is a Sierra snowpack “We don’t have water,” McDonnell said. “Less rainfall, higher temperatures and no snow is a mega-drought.”

In the past several years, Southern California has added infrastructure to conserve and recycle water, he explained as “putting water in the bank.”

In just one year, however, half of the the 2.7 million-acre feet of water reserves stored in 2012 haves been used up.

Because the state’s voluntary water conservation did not work, California Gov. Jerry Brown asked the State Water Resources Control Board to get involved.

State-mandated water delivery cutbacks mean member agencies must ask their users to cut back accordingly.

The new “normal,” said McDonnell, means California has less water.

Thus, said Pamela Berstler of Green Gardens Group (G3), “Putting water on ornamental grass is a poor use of the resource.”

Beverly Hills has a cutback of 32-percent on water use.

“Seventy-percent of water

Berstler advocated creating water-wise gardens that “create soil sponges.” A cocktail of compost, living mulch and climate-appropriate plants keeps the soil alive by retaining water that is then used in the dry season.

Rocks, asphalt and artificial turf “make dry conditions dryer,” she said, and “creates desertification.”

On July 1, the City of Beverly Hills will launch the Garden Gurus Program, subsidizing $175 of the $225 cost for a G3 consultant to come to the home of any Beverly Hills customer to assess their gardens.

On the Tuesday, the City Council is expected to approve a Drought Tolerant Garden Handbook prepared by G3.

Ryan Hudson, manager of Pioneer Hardware, explained that there are gadgets designed to decrease flows, plug leaks, and cut down on water usage.

“It’s so simple. Change the showerhead. Seal a leak with Teflon. Throw a brick in the toilet tank. Either you don’t have the right stuff or it doesn’t work right,” he said.

Former Beverly Hills Mayor Dr. Chuck Aronberg also spoke, advocating against the use of artificial turf. But Aronberg disagrees with the experts on turf replacement.

“Turf takes away pollutants and emits oxygen,” he said.

“Save water inside the house.”

The City currently has fines in place for outdoor watering violators. And on Tuesday, the Council will further discuss usage penalties, in addition to discussing pools and spas, artificial turf and the appeals process for violations.

Art By Holocaust Survivor Maria Abrams On Display At LAMOTH “Early and Late Memories: The Art of Maria Frank Abrams” will open Sunday at the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (LAMOTH), 100 S. The Grove Dr. in Pan Pacific Park.

A survey of the Holocaustinspired art by survivor Maria Frank Abrams (1924-2013), the exhibit opens with a reception at 1 p.m., which will include talks by curator Matthew Kangas and the artist’s son, Edward Abrams, a human rights lawyer living in Jerusalem.

Born in Hungary in 1924, Abrams survived the AuschwitzBirkenau and Bergen-Belsen camps, but 33 members of her family perished. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1948 and studied art at the University of Washington. She lived for many years in Seattle, inspired by the landscapes; and Abrams’ work is currently on display in museums including the Seattle Art Museum and Yad Vashem.

LAMOTH’s show includes 16 paintings, drawings, prints and photo-collages from private collections representing the artist’s earliest and latest expressions. Torn between depicting the Holocaust and celebrating

the beauty and light of her postwar home in Seattle, Abrams alternately embraced and denied the impact of her WWII experiences on her art. Included in the exhibit are four photocollages commissioned by Seattle’s Nordic Heritage Museum, when Abrams was honored at the museum’s annual Raoul Wallenberg Dinner. The photo-collages depict four family members who perished and employ family archival material including photographs, postcards and letters.

At a time when few were interested in hearing about the Holocaust, Abrams grappled with confronting her memories and adapting to American culture To do this, she also made prints, murals, mosaics, and designed sets for the first production of the new Seattle Opera, among other theatrical designs, costumes and sets.

The LAMOTH exhibit, which runs through Monday, Aug. 31, is accompanied by a 138-page full-color volume, Kangas’ Burning Forest: The Art of Maria Abrams.

Beverly Hills got off to a quick 2-0 lead but by the end of the first quarter the 40 Thieves held a 5-4 lead. There were multiple lead changes throughout with

outstanding goaltending and defense by both sides. 40 Thieves tied the score at 10-10 with 37 seconds left before Moskowitz’s heroics took over.

The Beverly Hills squad will host NORCAL Champion Barbary Coast on Sunday July 12 at 2 p.m. on their home field at Culver City High School.

Local Golfers Raise Funds To Send Kids To Summer Camp

The event raises funds to support Camp Bob Waldorf on the Max Straus Campus, enabling over 1200 children to spend a life changing week at camp.

Camp Bob Waldorf is owned and operated by JBBBSLA. It is located on 112 acres in the Verdugo Mountains of Glendale. Since 1938, over 60,000 children between the ages of 7-18 have enjoyed horseback riding, archery , music, art, and leadership development while attending camp.

“This event allows children to experience a week of support, valuable life lessons and character-building skills, regardless of their ability to pay,” said event co-chair Joey M. Behrstock of Wells Fargo Advisors Beverly Hills. “It’s such an honor to be involved and to know these kids will have a once in a lifetime experience.”

Visits from Ali, the self-proclaimed “Greatest of All Time” were a regular occurrence back in those days. Ali was one of a laundry list of high-profile athletes and Hollywood elite that have helped turn Malibu Clothes into the go-to place in Beverly Hills for top quality menswear for the last 60-plus years.

That list included a who’s who of Hollywood A-listers.

Rick said at one point, the majority of the wardrobe for TV shows Spelling was involved in were from Malibu Clothes.

Malibu Clothes also did huge studio business for MGM, Paramount and others. Top NBA players and coaches like Michael Jordan, Jerry West and Pat Riley also frequented the store.

Former Lakers and Clippers star Matt Barnes, who currently plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, is among Malibu Clothes’ current clientele.

“You name him, he was probably a customer of ours,” Rick Firestone said, noting that until the late 90s, customers at Malibu Clothes were generally only allowed in on a referral from an existing customer.

In 1946, Stan Firestone started Malibu Clothes out of a loft in downtown Los Angeles. Stan had been doing stockwork for Petrocelli clothing, and got the second-story loft in downtown to make it easier to ship the clothing across the country.

One day, a friend came to Stan needing a suit and bought one directly from him for a wedding. A fellow wedding guest was so impressed with the suit that he was referred to Stan to get one of his own.

Eventually, word spread of the suits Stan had in his wherehouse and before long, he realized it might be a more prudent business move to cut out the middleman and begin selling suits directly to consumers.

In the late 50s, Stan’s friend Marvin Hime offered him a location in his building on Beverly Drive and Stan jumped at the move.

For those who think the Desert is all about glitz, glamour and galas, there is a new temple of opulence planned for the City of Rancho Mirage which will bolster that impression even further.

The Rancho Mirage City Council has just given its approval for the construction of a $100 million “six star” hotel, spa and condominium development just south of city hall and that town’s Cancer Survivors Park.

Temporarily called Thunderbird Resort and Spa – the permanent name will be announced when a hotel operator signs on to manage the facility – the project is planned for 24 acres encompassing 125 hotel rooms, up to 48 condominiums, three pools, a spa and fitness center, mountainadjacent walking, hiking and cycling paths.

According to the project’s co-developer Richard Weintraub, the goals of the project’s philosophy will focus on fitness, education, reflection, relaxation and tranquility leading to overall physical well-being and “complete seclusion.” Of course, these benefits do not come cheap and the hotel’s owners are eyeing “rack rates” scaling from upwards of $800 per night; the city council is eyeing additional yearly Transit Occupancy Tax (TOT) income of millions of dollars. Prices on the condos have not been set, but according to Weintraub, they are expected to “… set a new market” for hotel-connected condominiums.

This is still speculative, however, as financing has not been obtained– something the Thunderbird Resort and Spa’s neighbor, the fivestar Ritz Carlton Hotel and Spa, took years to obtain. ****** It used to be that a black tie gala held at the Ritz Carlton meant guests would have an elegant evening. But, that was before the sound of busting financial bubbles could be heard from New York to California, and the luxury hotel overlooking the Desert floor was no more.

Now, nearly two decades later, the Ritz-Carlton is back in its renewed finery as demonstrated a few weeks ago as the host venue for the United Way’s celebration of 25 years of giving with a “silver tie” gala featuring appropriately silver gowns for the ladies to off-set their escorts’ black tie.

It was also more than appropriate that the event’s presenting sponsor was Rolls-Royce Motor Cars of Rancho Mirage, which struck the right note by highlighting the décor with a four-foot ice sculpture of the Rolls-Royce emblem and provided guests with Rolls-Royce themed swag bag items.

The Bel-Air Association, on the other hand, refused to publicly take stands against the Strada Vecchia property until after the LADBS got involved and levied sanctions. It also refused to take a stand against a proposed large property on Somma Way. The BAA also opposed an interim control ordinance that was approved by the L.A. Planning and Landuse Committee in March.

Hobbs had been a member of the BAA for more than 40 years before being unceremoniously removed from the group last year when she questioned at a meeting why the BAA was not stepping up publicly to defend BelAir residents.

“They refused to send me a due notice after I had questioned why they were not supporting homeowners in their efforts to reduce hauling, construction vehicles parking on residential streets and enforcement of L.A. Department of Building and Safety Permits,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs’ lawsuit has been centered around transparency concerns and possible conflicts of interest. One such instance mentioned in the lawsuit is the BAA’s law firm, of which Harvey Saferstein, a former BAA President and existing “ex officio” director, was formerly a partner of.

That law firm characterized him as an existing director. In its 2014 IRS Form 990 tax filing, the lawsuit says the BAA “falsely asserts it has no economic relationship with any present or former officer or director.

It also refuses to adopt any conflict of interest policy or have its compensation agreements reviewed or approved by any independent source.”

Hobbs said the BAA alleged the IRS form 990 was only available to members, which is against the law.

Form 990’s are public documents.

The lawsuit also alleges that the BAA has “no conflict of interest policy, and it conceals its governing documents as well as its financial statements not just from the public, but, indeed, even its own members. In fact, its purposed by-laws are captioned “Confidential Internal Use Only - Not for External Distribution.”

The lawsuit goes on to note that the BAA did not hold its required annual meeting in 2014 because it did not have enough Directors present at several attempted meetings.

Russell F. Wolpert of Brown George Ross LLP, an attorney for Hobbs, said the BAA is attempting to hold a substitute meeting on June 29, but the lawsuit challenges the legitimacy of the meeting, urging that the election be held under the auspices of a Superior Court Judge and that dissenting members should be able to go to the electorate with their positions, something Wolpert says has previously been prevented by the BAA. “This action was brought because in this era of openness and transparency, the Bel-Air Association has become a retrograde counterpoint.” Wolpert said.

BAA President Ron Hudson did not return a request for a comment before The Courier’s deadline Thursday.

The proposed plan by Richard Meier & Partners Architects, will eliminate the retail component and reduce residential by 20-percent, or 42 residences - to make room for the 134 hotel rooms.

The new development adds a public element, including a rooftop restaurant, spa and fitness facility. Public gardens and open space will be designed by OLIN landscape firm and the buildings are expected to achieve at least a LEED Silver Certification, said COO Jay Newman of the Athens Group.

“It’s a small city in a large environment with all the benefits of a large city,” Fran describes the Beverly Hills of today where the daily population generally dwarves residents eight times over.

Fern originally moved into Beverly Hills shortly after she turned 12 and her family left New York for her father’s career as a television writer. Her father, who had once wanted to become a doctor but took a different path because of the Great Depression, went on to create Marcus Welby, M.D., and serve as its executive producer. The television series starring Robert Young was ABC’s first top show and became the trailblazer for future medical dramas on TV. Fern recalled fondly her early years in Beverly Hills, where as a Beverly Vista student she and her friends would walk along Beverly Drive, visiting the momand-pop stores. At Beverly Hills High School, Fern was the editor of the school newspaper, Highlights.

“It’s always just been a great place to live,” she said.

In fact, aside from the first years of their marriage, Fern has always lived in Beverly Hills.

Bob originally moved out to L.A. with his family from Iowa with just one semester of high school left. After graduating L.A. High School (class of 1949) he went on to attend UCLA, with the intention of becoming a newspaper man.

“I wanted to be a sports writer and I was willing to work to get it,” he said. “In fourth grade, I wrote a ‘What I want to do when I grow up’ essay; a sports writer.”

After UCLA, where he penned the semiweekly column “Seizing It Up” (a play on his last name), Bob went on to work for eight years at the Los Angeles Times covering sports.

“The guy who hired me said, 'It’s $64.50 a week,' and I said, ‘I’ll pay it,’” he recalled.

Fern recalled how she had won an L.A. Times fellowship to attend graduate school at UCLA when she was pregnant and that it came with a $1,000 stipend; at the time, she estimated tuition was about $39.

By the time Bob reached 30, now with two young children to provide for, he said he “saw the writing on the wall” and knew the newspaper business would be unable to provide him with the necessary stability. Thus, Bob traded in his byline to become a writer for sportscaster Tom Harmon.

After eight years covering the world of sports he gravitated to television, eventually creating Up Close With Roy Firestone–a Monday through Friday television show that he produced for 15 years.

Fern returned to the professional world once their children were old enough to walk home from school, now gravitating to community-based nonprofits.

Following her role as public affairs director for the National Council of Jewish Women, Fern became the executive director of the San Fernando Valley Fair Housing Council.

Eventually, she went on to become the executive director of the Venice Family Clinic, where she was instrumental in helping the free comprehensive healthcare clinic expand beyond its initial location.

Fern still sits on the board of the Venice Family Clinic today. She is also a member of the board for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, where she helps organize an annual bridge tournament as a benefit fundraiser.

Bob is currently the treasurer for the Southwest Beverly Hills Homeowners Association.

These days, in addition to their morning ritual of reading the print edition newspaper for about an hour with their coffee, the Seizers like to plan out their upcoming trips.

This week, in fact, the two are traveling along the California coast with their third oldest grandson.

“I feel like Beverly Hills is home,” Fern said.

“In my opinion, you’ll never be sorry you live in Beverly Hills,” Bob added.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The newly Proposed Historical Preservation Ordinance in Beverly Hills is a well-reasoned and balanced approach to preserving and protecting our historic resources.

This will encourage property owners to voluntarily agree to landmark designation by providing for a number of important incentives to the property owner beyond those provided by state law. At the same time, it provides some additional protection for those owners who do not want their property designated a landmark by changing the threshold for an involuntary designation.

The prior ordinance only required a property to be a “notable” example of an architect’s work. The new one requires a finding that the property is an “exceptional” example of that architect’s work in order to force designation on a property owner. Simply put, not every master architect’s work is deserving of landmark designation.

The new proposed ordinance provides a more balanced and equitable approach to preservation that is reflective of our community’s desires.

Stephen P. Webb, Former Mayor of Beverly Hills ****** I was so sad to hear the news that Sonny Alexander died earlier this month. He wasn't really a Beverly Hills fixture but close to it.

When I was a little girl in the late 1950s and lived on Beverwil Drive long before there was a Beverly Hillcrest Hotel which is now a new incarnation on the corner of Pico Boulevard and Beverwil, called Mr. C. There was Willard’s Chicken Ranch, an abandoned one story gray building with a huge parking lot custom made for bike riding and me.

On the other corner of Edris Drive and Pico there was a tiny budding business named Sonny Alexander Flowers just beginning there. As I rode through the alley in the back, Sonny would always offer some of the more tired flowers that weren’t too fresh to sell, and always gave them to me to bring home.

When his business grew larger the little place became a part of the brand new hotel that was about to be built. He moved down the street to Beverly Drive and Pico and eventually a block away to the current location.

When Sweet Sixteen parties were popular, he made the flower arrangement that looked like a soda–in a soda glass with white and pink carnations which resembled vanilla ice-cream spilling over with straws–that was Sonny’s creation. Over the years he took good care of our family flower needs. And when ever you ran into him, he was always shy and kind of a bashful man, but always made sure to say hello to us. I always felt so lucky to have grown up in an era when your neighborhood and the people in it

meant a lot. Sonny was a very nice guy and will always be remembered for his kindnesses to that happy kid just riding her bike, being carefree, enjoying the sights, and the wonderful people she grew up with! Frances Terrell Lippman, Beverly Hills ****** Recently, there was big news about philanthropists convening in Las Vegas to combat BDS, its’ anti-Semitism, their willingness to destroy Israel, or, as they call it, a division into two states: 1) Hamasbythesea 2) WestBankbytheriver.

Note that Israel is not on the map.

If BDS and certain Jewish groups are not completely successful, then there will be three states, with Israel continuing to fight for existence.

Long before the Las Vegas’ meeting took place, many fine people and organizations have battled against the BDSrs. I feel those people should have been part of this meeting... the additional money would go a long way.

Eshman from The Jewish Journal goes out of his way to convince us that J street (a group formed by an Israeli who now lives in the U.S. where he doesn’t suffer rocket or stabbing attacks and has the gall to tell Israelis how to live), the Jewish Voice for Peace plus two other groups are also mixing into Israeli politics.

Instead of endorsing them, he should be writing about how disruptive and anti-Semitic they are. Did he miss the Jewish Voice for Peace endorsement of the BDS movement at UCLA? Or is he just following his own liberal agenda?

Which brings us to other dangerous Jews, such as the three supreme court justices who don’t know the location of the capital of Israel.
