City Council Officially Awards Contract To Parrent Smith For Toxic Tree Cutting Investigation By Victoria Talbot The City Council awarded a contract to Parrent Smith Investigations for the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Parcels 12 & 13 Tuesday, but modified the language of the Scope of Work. The item was pulled from the Consent Calendar by Councilmember Julian Gold so that he could express his opposition to Parrent Smith. Gold and Mayor John Mirisch had originally selected a law firm to perform the investigation. However, several residents spoke on the matter, objecting to the language in the Scope of Work. “Were mistakes made by City staff? If so, by whom and what was done as a result?” “We know that senior City staff ignored the Department of Toxic Substances Control. You [City Council] were not informed.

People of the City were given a false narrative from the City. It was intentional wrongdoing, not a mistake,” said former mayor Bob Tanenbaum. “This sets up a conclusion as if a little mistake happened, an excusable error or oversight. ‘Don’t be upset, it won’t happen again ‘... If they come back with a charge based on the draft as it is now, accountability is a secondary consideration and nothing in the scope of work even suggests any… action in violation of any standard or appearance of impropriety or anything objectionable between the staff and the landowner,” said Thomas White, president of the Beverly Hills Municipal League. The City Council concluded that the language should be replaced to reflect fact-finding to be conducted under oath with Gold dissenting.

By Matt Lopez Mohamed Hadid appears to be running out of options as he defends himself against allegations of illegal megamansion development in Bel-Air. Last Friday, the developer turned reality TV star was dealt a devastating blow at the Van Nuys West Courthouse, when Judge Eric Harmon denied a request from the defendants – including Hadid – for a pre-trial diversion. Hadid and the property owners at 901 Strada Vecchia are facing criminal charges related to work done at the home, which was planned to be nearly 30,000 square feet, including illegal use of

land, building without a permit and a failure to obey orders from the L.A. Department of Building and Safety. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison and potential fine. As defined by California Penal Code 1001.74, a pre-trial diversion is “the procedure of postponing prosecution either temporarily or permanently at any point in the judicial process from the point at which the accused is charged until adjudication. When ‘pretrial diversion’ is granted if the divertee has performed satisfactorily during the period of diversion, the (see ‘HADID’ page 17)

Beverly Hilton Open Space Project To Proceed On November Ballot By Victoria Talbot The Beverly Hills Garden and Open Space Initiative will appear on the ballot Nov. 8 by a unanimous decision of the Beverly Hills City Council. “If this is what the public wants, this is what they should have,” said Councilmember Julian Gold. Voters will decide on a proposal to amend The Beverly Hilton Specific Plan to eliminate the approved 8-story residential building on Wilshire Boulevard and consolidate it with the 18-story residential building on Santa Monica Boulevard to create one 26story building, along with a publicly-accessible 1.7-acre garden. The initiative qualified to be on the ballot with a total of 3,980 verified signatures, or

18.9-percent of registered voters within the City. Pursuant to the State Elections Code Section 9241, which governs Beverly Hills elections, the City Council had four courses of action to decide from: • Adopt the petition as it was presented in the ordinance; • Receive a report from City staff on the effect of the initiative that must be returned within 30 days, and could include such things as fiscal impact, land use and any other matters the council deemed important to request in the report; • Submit the initiative to the voters in a special election called for that purpose, that must take place 88-103 days (see ‘BEVERLY HILTON’ page 17)

Beverly Hills Elders: Sandy, Stu Newmark – 61 Years Of Marriage In July Part 73 in a series on Beverly Hills residents who have grown with the Centennial City By Laura Coleman Theirs is the kind of love story you read about every so often that makes you smile, especially when you find out that longtime Beverly Hills residents Sandra (Sandy) and Stuart (Stu) Newmark grew up within a few blocks of each other but never met until they were in their 20s. “The irony is that in this huge City, we both lived on the same street and did not know each other as little kids because we were several blocks apart. Peninsula Beverly Hills Launches Cutting-Edge Car Wash Service With ENVi By Laura Coleman In response to the drought, the Peninsula Beverly Hills has partnered with carwash provider ENVi to offer guests and locals access to a waterless carwash service with an ecoconscious heart. In addition to making use of a non-toxic wash-and-wax solution that is applied to the automobiles and then cleaned away and buffed using microfiber cloth, ENVi donates a portion of proceeds–50 cents a carwash to be precise–to Water.org, which was cofounded by Matt Damon. The company also hires primarily deaf employees. “We call the company ENVi, as in the first four letters of the environment, because we want everything we do to be beyond reproach,” said ENVi founder Chad Zani, who emphasized that a typical car wash utilizes 20,000 ounces of water. “We use around 14 to 16 ounces of the product to wash and wax the car.” The biodegradable product is made without petro-chemicals in a facility based in Gardena, which means that the groundwater is not getting further contaminated as a result of people washing their cars. Zani, who moved to L.A. from Australia just over a year

ago after spending the last decade cleaning cars without water using a solution he helped create, said he immediately incorporated the model of employing deaf people after pitching the ENVi mobile app at a conference and learning about the need within the deaf community for jobs. The on-demand app went live in January and it wasn’t long after that Zani began his partnership with The Peninsula to bring the service onsite to the hotel. Over 95 percent of ENVi’s workers are deaf, he said. According to employee Alberto Martinez, who once drove for Uber and earned an amount that equated to roughly $6 an hour, the opportunity has been profound. “It's meant a lot. I have the opportunity to work and have a goal,” wrote Martinez. Zani said his employees earn 70-percent from the price of the car wash, which starts at $40 at The Peninsula. But at the end of the day, what it’s all about is providing patrons with a spotless vehicle. “Customers get a great service and they can feel good about helping the environment,” Zani said. ENVi’s on-demand carwash app is available online. ENVIRONMENT FIRST–ENVi employee Alberto Martinez and founder Chad Zani are among the team making it easy to get a great environmentally friendly car wash at The Peninsula Beverly Hills. No reservations are needed for the 45minute hand car wash and wax, with someone onsite from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and available at a moment’s notice "after hours.”

BHEF Summer Academy 2nd Session Starts Monday By Danielle Berris The Beverly Hills Education Foundation (BHEF) Summer Academy begins its second session Monday, giving high school students an opportunity to stay on track or get ahead in their classes. From Creative Writing to Health to Biology and World History, there are more than a dozen classes designed to help local students. “We want to support kids,” emphasized summer school Principal Mark Mead, who was recently appointed as one of three new assistant principals at Beverly Hills High School. Mead said that the program, which is held at the BHHS Science and Technology building, prefers to hire teachers from within the Beverly

Hills Unified School District. Recently, the Courier observed a first semester Health class taught by Heather Godin where students, ranging from incoming freshmen to seniors, had the opportunity to hear from two speakers with the The Rape Treatment Center (RTC) at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center. Through a series of interactive dialogues, students were exposed to the nuances of consensual versus non-consensual sex. For example, RTC speakers Anna Stroman and Abby Doyle asked students to decide if it was consensual for a 19-yearsold woman to send a nude photo of herself using Snapchat to her friend’s little brother (whom she knew had a crush on her) on his 14th birthday.

Many students in the class said they thought it was okay for the young woman to send the unsolicited photo. Other students, however, immediately felt it was wrong. And thus began the conversation. Two incoming BHHS freshmen from Godin’s class said that by taking Health, they can “learn about making good choices and be more aware of [their] surroundings.” “It makes me feel safer knowing,” said one student. For more information regarding BHEF’s Summer Academy, visit http://www.bhef.org. Classes run from Monday to Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. daily. Second semester runs from June 27 until July 14.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Again Ranks In U.S. News Top 10 Hospitals Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) has once again been named as one of the best children’s hospitals in the U.S., and as the top pediatric medical center in California, by U.S. News & World Report. For the eighth straight year, CHLA has achieved the survey’s Honor Roll status, a ranking bestowed on hospitals that excel in multiple medical specialties. Only 11 children’s hospitals in the country made the list; and CHLA is the only pediatric healthcare institution in California to be named to the list every year since the Honor Roll began in 2009. Since 1990, the magazine has published an annual assessment of the nation’s best health care facilities. CHLA has been included among its "Best Children’s Hospitals" every year. “We are honored to receive this acknowledgment and recognition of CHLA’s dedication to providing demonstrably superior clinical care

and the work we do to create hope and build healthier futures for every child we treat,” says Paul S. Viviano, CHLA president/CEO. “U.S. News & World Report has included CHLA among the nation’s finest hospitals for children for 27 years, and this unprecedented streak is a credit to the passion, commitment and teamwork exhibited by our physicians, nurses, clinical staff and employees, all of whom strive each day to provide the best care to our patients and their families.” Of the 183 pediatric medical centers participating this year, CHLA’s comprehensive score placed it #7 overall in the U.S, with seven of the hospital’s divisions also listed among the top 10 in their medical specialty. Overall, CHLA equaled or improved its national ranking in six categories compared to last year’s survey results. For 2016-17, CHLA’s Cancer and Neonatology teams both moved up one spot to #7 in the nation.

Orthopaedics also moved up one spot to #8, while Gastroenterology & GI Surgery moved up to take the #9 slot. U.S. News ranked CHLA’s Diabetes & Endocrinology program eighth overall, while Cardiology & Heart Surgery and Urology both ranked #10 nationally. With Neurology & Neurosurgery ranking #16, Pulmonology #19 and Nephrology #24, CHLA earned top-25 recognition in each of the ten specialty areas evaluated by this prestigious review. For its annual rankings, U.S. News combines clinical and operational data, results of a reputational survey of boardcertified specialists along with industry data available from specialty organizations (such as the National Cancer Institute). The magazine compiles hard data on 10 different pediatric medical specialties, drawn from a lengthy survey completed by the majority of the pediatric facilities asked to participate.

Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA’s ‘Giving Circle,’ Today’s and Tomorrow’s Children Fund, Supports Pediatric Physician Scientists’ Innovative Research Many physician-scientists have ideas for research that could lead to new treatments or cures for the patients they treat. But getting federal funding to support that research isn’t always easy. The “giving circle” at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA is working to do its part. It offers pediatric physician-scientists the opportunity to pitch their ideas, win grants and improve young lives. The circle, officially known as the Today’s and Tomorrow’s Children Fund (TTCF), is made up of community members interested in medical research who each year pool their donations of $5,000 per person. Members listen to presentations by doctors and then decide how to distribute the funds among the grantee or grantees. “TTCF is an innovative way for the community to embrace the work of our pediatric subspecialty physician researchers and actively participate in the exciting process of advancing science,” said Dr. Sherin Devaskar, professor of pediatrics, executive chair of the department of pediatrics and physician-inchief at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA. “TTCF is hands-on, powerful and rewarding,” said Glenn Bozarth, a member since 2009. “We vote based on competitive presentations and help bright young research doctors get the

start they need. Our funding often helps launch their careers and provides seed funding for research that will later qualify for significantly larger grants, resulting in huge advances benefiting children all around the world.“ • This year, Dr. Elizabeth Marcus, a pediatric gastroenterologist, won the grand prize of $90,000 to further her research on bacteria called Helicobacter pylori which causes stomach ulcers in children. Dr. Kalpashri Kesavan, a neonatologist, and Dr. Katherine Wesseling-Perry, a pediatric nephrologist, tied for second place, each receiving $60,000. • Kesavan’s research uses a vibration device to correct breathing pauses in premature infants. • Perry is studying the effects of kidney disease on bone and heart health in children. TTCF was created in 2006 and so far, the group has donated a total of $2.4 million to 25 projects at the UCLA Children’s Discovery and Innovation Institute. Pediatric cancer specialist Dr. Noah Federman, who received $135,000 in 2009, vouches for the significance of group giving. “TTCF helped me pursue research in finding new therapies to treat rare bone and soft tissue cancers in chil-

ARTS & E N T E RTA I N M E N T Jerry Cutler On Film Zappa Doc Is Outstanding

Nidhi To Premiere Play Gandhari At Fringe Festival

Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words is as brilliant a documentary about someone I knew nothing about except that he was a popular musician. I never followed his publicity or the things, good and bad, that people said about him. All that changed when I saw this film. What compelled me to go was not so much the man, but his sister who I had the privilege of bringing into the Jewish faith. I never discussed him, as I did not know what to say. I watched with great interest as this enigmatic, extremely likable person spoke his mind. He was brilliant and had his pulse on the mores of his time. He denounced drugs and praised America. He didn’t always see eye to eye with his country’s standards, but defended them to the hilt. He said: “Everybody believes in something and by virtue of the fact that they believe in something, uses that to support their own existence.” He was an iconoclast who believed in the right of everyone to express their feelings and worship the things they deemed sacred. Through director Thorsten Schutte’s excellent work, Zappa will be seen in a new light by all who followed his music and persona. And, if you’re like me, you will exult in the fact that there was a man like Zappa who didn’t hesitate to speak his mind and also mourn the fact that his life was cut short by cancer in December 1993 at age 53. During his 30-year career, Zappa produced more than 60 albums and drew overflow crowds in every country he appeared in—even Russia. I still don’t care for his music and he would have been okay with that. Zappa was a voice of truth and solidarity in a time of uncertainty and unorthodox values. He was also a philosopher and an icon. Viva Zappa! 4 bagels out of 4

Resident Aishveryaa Nidhi will present the premiere of her one-woman play Gandhari...In Search Of Light, the only Hindi international entry in the 2016 Hollywood Fringe Festival, at 2:30 p.m., tomorrow and 5:30 p.m., Sunday, June 26 at Asylum’s International House, Main Space, 6500 Santa Monica Blvd. In Hindi with English sur-titles, the 60minute show gets its plot from the Mahabharata, the longest poem ever written, that focuses on the Kurukshetra War between two camps of cousins. Nidhi takes on the role of Gandhari, perhaps the most tragic character in the legend, and the mother of 100 sons. Forced to marry a blind man, Dhritarashtra, Gandhari protests against arbritrary male power and dynasty politics by blindfolding herself, not out of devotion to her husband, but as an act of rebellion. Nidhi promises to enact some of the ”unread, yet crucial, chapters of the life of a woman who embraced darkness with open arms,” she says. Premiered at Sydney’s Australian National Institute of Dramatic Arts, ”the play is a quest for the woman hidden beneath glorious tales of heroes and wars,” Nidhi adds. Produced by the Abhinay School of Performing Arts Inc., Australia, and directed by Arvind Gaur, “the play sees Gandhari speaking her heart out for the first time, assuming center stage and narrating the Mahabharata from her perspective,” Nidhi says. Tickets are $10 and available at www.hollywoodfringe.org/projects/3810.

Under her leadership, application numbers rose by 30-percent; its digital presence expanded with the addition of student bloggers, multiple video series, and an admissions micro-site; and the school transitioned to a paperless, online application process. “I could not be more pleased to be joining the Colburn community,” Cioppa said. “The combination of extraordinarily talented students, dedicated administration, and remarkable faculty is one that has unlimited potential to have an incredible impact on the music world in the 21st century. I am excited to take on this new role, and to be part of shaping the future of such an important institution.”

By Kate MacCary A relative newcomer to the world of watchmaking in name only, the 22year-old luxury brand Glashütte Original actually dates back to the 1800s. In anticipation of releasing its fall line, the German brand hosted a special event this week at The District by Hannah An with a presentation by a master watchmaker. In a nod to old-fashioned simplicity, the new line aims to honor tradition by incorporating Roman and Arabic numerals in elegant watches. “We bring the past, the present and the future together in one brand,” explained a Glashütte spokesperson.

Notable among the new line is the Senator Excellence, which features the company’s new Calibre 36 movement in black stainless steel (or red gold) with Roman numerals and includes the company’s “SuperLumiNova” material that makes the dial readable in dark lighting. Priced around $10,000, the brand touts it as “the new generation of movement” due to its precision. “This is a movement that has some exceptional technology,” said Feldmar Watch Company’s Scott Meller. “The innovations [could] revolutionize the future of watchmaking.” Locally, Glashütte watches can also be found at Westime on Rodeo Drive. Another Phobia From Roger Lefkon

FEAR OF GOING ON VACATION Deciding where to go on a vacation has always been perplexing for me. A cruise sounded like a good idea until I read about people falling overboard, passengers quarantined with a mysterious virus and pirates high jacking cruise ships, holding everyone aboard hostage. Pass. Having my own Fiji island complete with pristine beaches, scented tropical breezes, no screaming children or obnoxious tourists sounded appealing until I factored in the possibility of an active volcano or a tsunami. Pass. I also considered a train ride on the Orient Express where I could expect romance, classy accommodations, fabulous dining and a grotesque murder courtesy of Agatha Christie. Pass. I finally decided to visit the most feared place on earth and no I’m not talking about the dentist’s office, the Bates Motel or being trapped inside of an MRI machine during a power failure. I’m referring to a safari in Africa, home of the Ebola plague, gigantic snakes who routinely hitch rides on U.S. bound planes, cannibals who prefer their prey broiled rather than roasted, just like the Palm, pygmies who will look up to you only when aiming a blowgun containing darts dipped in a fatal concoction made from poisonous plant extract and chicken fat and tribes of headhunters skilled in shrinking human heads and then selling them for big bucks on eBay. My fear of embarking on a safari dates back to my craving for the menagerie of lions, tigers, gorillas, elephants, bears and hippopotamuses that resided in each red, blue and yellow box of Barnum Animal Crackers with an average occupancy rate of 16 tasty lifelike creatures. Little did I know that as a kid I was contributing to the endangerment of Africa’s animal population. A dream

one night that I was being stalked by relatives of endangered animals only served to heighten my apprehension. In retrospect eating girl scout cookies might have been a safer bet. Then came my exposure to Tarzan films and the exploits of Johnny Weissmuller which at first endeared me to the African jungle scene until I witnessed his chimpanzee Cheetah being pursued by a pride of lions who had just dinned on a Gazelle and were in search of dessert. As it turned out Tarzan and I had much in common. We both preferred a loin cloth of animal hide to a Carroll and Company custom-made suit and in dealing with women we always relied on our strength, stamina, agility and a good pick-up-line to win the day. Remember, it was that sweet talking jungle dude, who came up with “Me Tarzan, you Jane.” (works every time) Where we differed was Tarzan favored raw meat whereas I enjoyed lean brisket on rye. I was hoping to bring along my personal physician, the celebrated Dr. Louis Fishman, but Medicare would not go along with it and instead provided me with a list of “medicine men” currently in Africa to attend a medical conference dealing with the role of Witch Doctors in today’s changing society. They included Dr. Doolittle, Dr. Jekyll, Dr. Strangelove, Dr. Seuss and Dr. Hannibal Lecter. None could replace “Dr Lou” who graciously agreed to make himself available to consult with me 24/6. (he plays golf on Wednesdays) The scary short flight to the wildlife refuge was in a vintage single propeller aircraft that was flying at tree top level, pruning every branch in it’s path and in the process resettling large numbers of monkeys having their lunch. According

to Monkeyologists these guys eat the banana first and then the peel much the same way I devour a hot dog first and then the roll proving once again that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Once settled in at my tent camp I picked up a copy of the Bush Gazette featuring “breaking news” about a rogue elephant demolishing a tourist land rover, tigers eating a supermarket butcher from Cucamonga while he was relieving himself behind a bush in the bush, and a baboon chasing a Victoria’s Secret model on a photo shoot, overtaking her and then proposing marriage. I experienced one frightening scenario after another including early morning game drives in an open-sided game-viewing truck where leaving the vehicle could have fatal consequences, colorfully clad tribespeople with lethal weapons who became hos-

tile when being photographed without their consent, and stern warnings not to bathe in streams unless you want to go nose to nose with a twenty foot crocodile with a reputation for devouring it’s victims and leaving no evidence. A good story line for NCIS but a nasty way to avoid the long flight home. Perhaps the scariest moment of the trip came late one night when nature called and I had to extricate myself from the nylon mosquito net that engulfed my bed in order to leave the tent and make my way to the outdoor lavatory while untamed critters skittered around me and the sounds of large animals nearby shattered the night air. On the way back I fumbled nervously to unzip the entrance to the tent, which now contained a “do not disturb” sign,

and vowed that the next time I had the urge to go, I would wait until daybreak. While on safari I did get to see the majestic Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and hippo. However, it wasn’t until returning home that I was able to see the Big Five that really matter, my cardiologist, urologist, gastroenterologist, pulmonologist and dermatologist. As for African safaris, I discovered I don’t particularly like the sights, sounds and smells of the bush where the vegetation is as tangled and thick as Bucatini and that watching the Zulu maidens dance for the Prince as he prepares to pick a wife bears an eerie resemblance to Dancing With The Stars meets The Bachelor. BEVERLY HILTON (Continued from page 1)

after the decision to set an election and • Direct that the initiative measure be presented to voters at the upcoming Los Angeles County General Election on November 8, 2016. The council ordered a 30day report from City staff and they asked to receive the preliminary results at their meeting scheduled July 19. According to State Election Code that governs the Beverly Hills initiative process, any election other than the one the City regularly holds in March is called a “special election.” Thus, the Nov. 8 Presidential Election is a “special election.” City Clerk Byron Pope explained: “When the Hilton representatives filed the petition with my office, they verbally requested the 15 percent threshold in order to qualify for a special election. Their reason was that they didn’t want to take a chance, for any reason, on the measure missing the Aug. 12, 2016 deadline date to submit for the Nov. 2016 ballot and slipping to the March 2017 Municipal Election. The language on the petition actually stated ‘at the soonest possible election, including any special election for which the measure qualifies.’” The report will function only to inform the council and the voters. By California state election law, the initiative text must remain identical to that which voters signed in the signaturegathering process. In 2008, the project underwent 19 public hearings, which resulted in the Hilton Specific Plan. That plan was then subject to a vote of the residents, which passed on Nov. 4, 2008. The Hilton Specific Plan remains in place with all of the mitigations, said City Attorney Larry Wiener, except for those items which were changed to create the initiative. All

But there can be no new mitigations or amendments and the Development Agreement cannot be changed. Though the initiative cannot be altered, Hilton owner Beny Alagem has pledged to file a covenant with the City of Beverly Hills to maintain the garden space “forever,” if the initiative passes. He has also pledged two hours of free parking for Beverly Hills residents while using the garden. With a full house in the council chambers, it seemed all of the attendees showed their support for the Hilton when Mayor John Mirisch asked supporters to stand up. Twelve speakers, including two former mayors and four commissioners, also spoke in favor. In addition, six letters were read into the record in favor of the initiative. Public comment in favor of the Nov. 8 ballot focused on allegations of “suppression of the vote,” by a special stand alone election that would have been held approximately five

weeks prior to the November General Presidential Election (by state code – between 88103 days from setting the election). Statistics show that voter turnout is significantly higher in June and November elections. The initiative should be on the November ballot in order, “to maintain the democratic history of the City involving voter turnout,” former Beverly Hills Mayor Bob Tanenbaum told the City Council in support of placing the initiative on the November ballot. “As the conscience of this community we rely on you to do what is in the best interest of all of us.” All the councilmembers said they wanted as many voters as possible to participate in an election to decide on the initiative and the decision to put the initiative on the Nov. 8 ballot was unanimous. “I am shocked that this many people needed to come here to talk about a special election – that this many people would think this council would suppress voter participa-

In her later years while still practicing law and as a real estate broker, Wyshak was a fixture in the City’s cultural life, enjoying events at The Wallis tion,” said Councilmember Lili Bosse. “We want this to be an opportunity for as much participation to vote as possible.” The Hilton could have sought a threshold of 10-percent of the City’s voters and qualified to be placed on the next regular election, which will be in March 2017. The 15 percent threshold allowed the City Council to submit the measure to voters at a special election, or to order the 30-day report on the impacts. “Since the proponents submitted signatures from more than 15 percent of the City’s registered voters and, therefore, were entitled to a ‘special election’ the City had the choice of calling a stand-alone ‘special election’ or consolidating the ‘special election’ on the initiative with the already-scheduled November election,” said Hilton Spokesperson Marie Garvey. “The initiative propo-

Initiative proponents always wanted a consolidated ‘special election’ in November. It is important to receive direction from the residents by the end of the year for planning purposes.” Though they are under no obligation to do so, Garvey said that the Hilton will assist City staff to prepare a complete and accurate a report. “We want the public to be informed,” said Garvey. “That’s hard to do without our help. We will work with the City to provide any information needed to make sure the report is thorough and accurate to educate the public.” Following receipt of the 30-day report, the council will formally place the initiative on the Nov. 8 ballot.

Kevin Durant, will be looked upon to help lead the Lakers into the post-Kobe Bryant era. With a 7'3" wingspan, Ingram projects as an elite, versatile defender with top-level scoring ability.Ingram averaged 17 points and six rebounds per game this season as a freshman for Duke.

Ingram is the second straight No. 2 overall pick made by the Lakers, after taking point guard D’Angelo Russell second overall in the 2015 NBA draft. The Lakers also picked 32nd overall in the draft, but that pick was not made before the Courier’s press time.

Okada, who will swim the 100 and 200 fly, is one of a trio of incoming UCLA freshman who will swim in the trials, along with Kenisha Liu and Isabella Goldsmith. Okada won Ocean League and CIF Swimming Championships this year for BHHS.

Beverly Hills High Alum Gross Selected As Cal State LA Executive Director of Athletics By Matt Lopez Beverly Hills High alum Daryl Gross is coming back to where it all started. On Wednesday, Gross was named executive director for athletics at Cal State LA, where he will replace Mike Garrett, whom he worked under as an assistant athletic director at USC in the 90s. “I look forward to building on Mike’s foundation and carrying the torch in a way that is truly extraordinary,” Gross said in a statement. “Our goals will include graduating our student athletes while providing them

a championship experience that will help them become leaders who make an impact on society.” After graduation from BHHS, Gross eventually moved on to play and coach football at UC Davis and was a graduate assistant with USC before being hired as a scout with the New York Jets. In 1991, he was hired as an assistant under Garrett, who was USC’s Athletic Director at the time. He took a job as Syracuse athletic director in 2004, a position he held until 2015.

Frances Allen Desert Roundup “There are no bad dogs, just bad owners.” One need look no farther than the 18th “Pets On Parade Awards” luncheon at Indian Wells’ Renaissance Esmeralda on July 9 where pets of all breeds and species co-exist with each other and their owners in presenting a fundraiser benefiting two animal-centric organizations: Pegasus Therapeutic Riding and Loving All Animals. Although it has grown remarkably over the past 30 years, Pegasus Therapeutic Riding is, and will always be, associated with its president and founder, Lori Sarner. Sarner developed a program of equine therapy whereby handicapped riders–ranging in age from three to 93–can feel the benefits of a horse’s gentle gait while also enhancing their selfesteem. Tailored to each rider, it began with only a couple of horses and four riders. Today, Pegasus has a stable of more than a dozen therapy horses and some 120 volunteers serving more than 175 weekly riders who have been deemed handicapped by the public school system or Social Security. The mission of Loving All Animals, founded by animal activist Lindi Biggi, is to join local and national animal welfare organizations to maximize programs intended to stop the killing

of adoptable animals. They do this by facilitating the meeting of rescue animals with potential owners and easing the adoption process. One of the ways the organization does this is by its Pets to People transportation program: Mobile Mutts, which brings – in a stretch, white limousine–suitable dogs to interested paries for viewing in their homes. This year’s luncheon will honor the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, the only municipally supported “no-kill” shelter in Riverside County. Harold Matzner was also honored for his commitment to rescue animals, whether they are from public shelters or found on the streets. More information about the Pets On Parade luncheon and Pegasus Therapeutic Riding is at 760-772-3057 and about Loving All Animals, call 760-834-7000.

distinctive Spanish tile roofs, Neff lived from 1895-1982. His career spanned the decades of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and contributed richly to the fine architecture of Los Angeles distinctive enclaves. Wallace Neff’s architecture became extremely popular with the Hollywood elite, in Beverly Hills, San Marino and Hancock Park. Some of those homes include the Gillette Mansion, Pickfair and the

BEVERLY HILLS Singer Mansion. Neff’s popularity has enjoyed a resurgence as his homes are being scooped up by Hollywood’s elite once again. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston paid $13.5 million for a Neff home owned by Frederick March. Diane Keaton purchased a Neff home in Beverly Hills that was featured in Architectural Digest, and then later sold to Madonna and Guy Ritchie. The home is being offered at $7.980 million.

Universal CityWalk Announces Bold Revitalization With New Restaurants, Theater Universal CityWalk, one of Los Angeles’ landmark urban entertainment complex’s that ushered in a generation of similar open air destinations, announced this week that it will undergo an elaborate revitalization. This significant undertaking coincides with Universal Studios Hollywood’s recent epic transformation in which 75 percent of the theme park was completely reimagined. “This is an exciting time as Universal CityWalk undergoes a transformation of its own,” said Larry Kurzweil, president

of Universal Studios Hollywood. “For over two decades, CityWalk has been the go to place for locals and out-of-town visitors alike to enjoy a variety of entertainment, and we’re excited to bring these significant enhancements to our guests as we continue to invest in our world-class destination.” CityWalk’s revitalization will elevate the Universal Cinemas to new heights as the 18 screen and IMAX 3D theatre updates with the most technologically advanced sight and sound achievements. A

complete refurbishment of the split level structure will include the installation of deluxe recliner seats to all 18 theatres—the equivalent of those found in Hollywood screening rooms. CityWalk will also add several new dining options, including LudoBird, featuring world-renowned and awardwinning Chef Ludo Lefebvre’s famous fried chicken, Blaze Fast Fire’d Pizza, Dongpo Kitchen, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville and Voodoo Doughnut.

NEWMARK

who was pinned, she’d blow it out and everybody went crazy. It’s a cartoon when you think about it today. It was so cute and people got so excited,” Sandy described. After graduation, and marriage, Stu, who had majored in business administration, steadily began building a career as an advertising executive. Ironically, fresh out of college, Stu was ready to change careers before he’d even begun once he learned that he’d have to spend the first two years in the mailroom, delivering mail, and earning peanuts. “I said, I cannot afford to be in advertising,” he recalled. “So I gave up on advertising totally and was going do something else [when] the dean of the Business School at UCLA got a call from a big advertising agency called Foote, Cone & Belding and said they were looking for somebody to join their firm...It was a done deal.” Stu started working in Foote Cone’s market research department before moving into account management and then becoming a senior vice president. He still recalls working on a curious project for one of his favorite early clients, Calavo Avocado.

“It was an open-ended research project where people would stand near the Calavo avocados and they had field interviewers asking, ‘What do you think about life? What do you feel about avocados? What are the implications of buying an avocado?’ and I had to write the report,” he recalled. After 12 years with Foote Cone, however, a recession hit and looking at the proverbial tea leaves, Stu decided it was time for him to embark on his own. He knew it was important to have the safety of his own business, particularly so because his daughter, Janet, and son, David, needed a solid provider. He retired just last year after almost 50 years running SM Newmark, his own full-service ad agency. A graduate of Beverly Hills High School and Horace Mann, Stu eventually moved the family to Beverly Hills in 1971, with both children graduating from BHHS. In fact, their son David was student body president there in 1975 and helped create a radio station for the high school. Originally born in Chicago in 1934, Stu grew up in the thick of the Great Depression. His father was in the grocery business with stores across the

with a French minor, was just coming out of a language class when she espied her future husband. “I was coming out of the building and I see this guy on the top level of the steps...looking so cool,” she began. “The word ‘cool’ didn’t exist the way it does today. If it had, that’s what I would have said about him, because he stood there in this leather jacket looking out over his domain and I just thought he was the cutest thing.” Sandy was swiftly “pinned” by Stu after the two officially met and they soon became engaged. While for fraternity boys, giving a girl the pin with the Greek letter of their house simply meant that they were going together, at Sandy’s sorority there was a particularly ritualistic ceremony that went on. “In the sorority on Monday nights we would meet and when all of us were in this huge dining room, if somebody turned out the light, all the girls would scream because that meant somebody was passing a candle. And when the candle went around and hit the girl

Midwest and the family moved around a lot before making their way to California where his father continued to sell groceries. Stu still remembers working in the grocery business during World War 2 and the shortages that confronted everyone. “In the grocery business, you couldn’t get merchandise. When you got merchandise, you would put it on the shelves and it would disappear right away and we had ration stamps. So I worked in the store as a little kid, filling in because the big guys were at war. Young men were at war,” he described. Like Stu, Sandy’s family moved to L.A. after World War II had ended. Originally born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1935, Sandy grew up as an “Army brat” moving from base to base in concert with her father’s career as a colonel in the Army. “We moved around and around and when I heard kids says, ‘Oh, I grew up with soand-so,’ I’d look at them and think ‘I wonder what that’s like?’ because I was never in the same school, just wherever my dad was stationed,” she recalled. After graduating from

UCLA, Sandy worked for a couple of years as a touch-up artist at an advertising agency. “I worked virtually until the day I gave birth to David...in 1957,” she said. When her kids were a little older she began volunteering as coach for the English department at BHHS. She also served for several years on the board of the Friends of the Beverly Hills Public Library. And for 35 years now, Sandy has been a docent at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where she has given hundreds of tours to the public of the museum’s permanent collection and traveling exhibitions. “Sandy is very well known for her Picasso tours,” Stu insists. In addition to the Newmarks’ love of art, they are particularly fond of classical music, having hosted numerous musicales in their Beverly Hills home over the years. But at the end of the day, its all about their love for family, especially their four grandchildren and the enduring flame that bonds them together.

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER AND ALL OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. LETTERS TO THE  EDITOR I am 91 years old, retired aerospace program director. I have lived in many buildings in the Los Angeles/Beverly Hills area during the last 76 years but nothing compares to the nightmare of living in a Donald Sterling building for the past five years. Shortly after I moved in, my apartment was flooded due to a hole in the balcony above me caused by a cable illegally positioned. This cable was not re-positioned and as a result, during the next rains my apartment flooded again. I am unable to get a normal night's sleep because of loud noise from the tenant above me during the hours of 2 to 5 a.m. When I complained to the manager, she suggested that I “talk to her.” When I tried knocking on the tenant’s door, they would never answer. There was an additional loud noise that would awaken me in the wee hours of the morning. I was told it was the “circulating pump” for the swimming pool. The area outside my living room and bedroom is lit up each night like Dodger Stadium with an additional torch light pointed at living room and bedroom windows. The vertical blinds furnished by the company let the light through. Although the air conditioning/heating thermostat has an “off” position, the heating system still comes on and pours out heat even though it is set to the “off” position. I have paid out of my own pocket for three different air conditioning companies to come and check the thermostat, for which I cannot get reimbursement from the landlord. Southern California Gas Company and all three of these independent HVAC companies have told me that the 70 year old air conditioning system needs to be replaced. This constant problem is of more concern for me because I have macular degeneration and wake up every morning with dried out eyes and nasal passage. For over one year, my toilet kept getting stopped up. They told me that I was “using too much paper.” I told them I was only using minimal paper and at one point showed them that I even stopped disposing of the paper into the toilet altogether to prove it was an old, faulty toilet. Finally, they agreed to replace the toilet and “magically” the problem stopped. When I moved in there were several tall trees in three 6 foot long planters outside my living room sliding glass door which made for a private shady patio. Several months ago they were all removed and now all I face is bare concrete. No reduction was made in my rent, but since I've lived here my rent has been raised $325 per month. Four years ago, I was hit by an auto while legally in a crosswalk. Since that time I have been permanently disabled and require the use of a walker for assistance in walking. Because of this I cannot navigate the steps to the front door of my building. The manager's “solution” was to give me a small remote with which to open the garage gate so I can walk down the driveway and enter the building through the garage. However, the door mechanism is so heavy that I can't open the door and move the walker at the same time, effectively preventing me from using this access into my building. Again, when I complained that I don't have a way of accessing either the front door or the garage door into the lobby where the elevator is, they offered no other solution. Without the assistance of another person, I am unable to access the building. Further, the elevator does not have a “stop” button feature. Consequently,

when I am trying to bring in groceries from the elevator, the doors are constantly closing on me and causing me bruising and pain. The reason I have not moved is that I am no longer able to drive and my disability makes it difficult to go look for another apartment with the assistance of another person. Since I've lived here I've received mail for 18 tenants who have lived in my apartment. A Beverly Hills ordinance says a building with 16 or more units must have a full time manager. The manager in my 35 unit building spends half her time in another one on Rexford Drive also owned by the Donald Sterling Co. The supervisor over the manager for this Sterling building is an arrogant, uncooperative person and it is not possible to contact anyone in the Sterling office to ever get a real solution to any complaint. The final irony is the permanent sign in front of the building says all the units in the building are “ULTRA LUXURY” apartments. There is nothing in these apartments that even rises to the level of “common and ordinary.” Edward L. Braun ****** Back in the late 1970s when I first started running in organized road races, there was a guy who was really an inspiration to me. His name was Henry Lange, Jr., who was a hell of a runner. Henry was about 10 years older than me (maybe around 30 at the time) and was tall with long racehorse legs that would gallop through many 10K races where he was a regular participant and frequent age division winner. I used to chase Henry in many races, never catching him for very long. He was a Beverly Hills resident and I would see him running around Beverly Glen and Mulholland or on the (then) dirt track at Beverly Hills High School. Henry looked like a celebrity, always wearing aviator sunglasses with a signature tank top and a Casio running watch. He worked in TV as a producer on shows like Laverne And Shirley and Happy Days. He drove a hefty BMW and had a very attractive girlfriend who would wait for Henry with his large beach towel he used to stretch on after races. A couple weeks ago, I called Henry using a production office number I got online. I told him who I was, and how he was such a great inspiration to me as a young runner. He was no longer running. He had double hip replacement surgery in 2001, but had run 12 miles a day up until that time. It was great to reminisce with Henry about the Beverly Hills Perrier 10K we both ran for several years. It started in front of BHHS and ran down Charleville and back. I told Henry I was going to try and “bring back” the Perrier race to the City. He congratulated me on my 40 yearlong running career. I told him about my switching to running mostly on the rubber track which helped preserve the joints. Henry is currently working on the NBC show Superstore and we agreed to meet up for lunch soon. It will be a memorable reunion. You never forget your running mentor. Especially when he has connections in the industry. Hal Lifson

Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (June 24). You've a special wish, and it will come true in the next 10 weeks if you keep wishing and working every day. Your family celebrates you with pride in July. Be careful what you publicize in August. People are curious about you, and your professional life will come under evaluation. This could lead to a promotion in November. Capricorn and Leo adore you. CANCER (June 22-July 22). There will always be a struggle between generations. It's human nature. Your parents, for better or worse, are a part of you. Accept them for who they are and you’ll be accepting yourself. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). There’s power in simple shared happiness. Your upbeat feelings attract those with similar optimism. Whatever you focus that cheer on will be lifted and transformed. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Relationship discussions aren’t easy. Feelings are on the line. You don’t want to reject or be rejected. It can be hard to state and hear the truth. Feeling vulnerable and going forward anyway —that’s what it’s about. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Love can be fragile or it can be mighty. Much depends upon how it’s grown and protected. Work on the relationship. You’ll be surprised where it goes once you dedicate yourself to that effort. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). What you want is very much in line with all that is possible for you. Still, you need to streamline your efforts, cut out the fat and make every attempt to be lean and mean in your approach. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). There’s much you can accomplish. There’s much you’ve already done. Don't stop your own momentum by looking sideways at airbrushed pictures, hyped publicity and Facebook fantasy pics. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). All work and no play makes for getting much farther ahead of things than the rest of the pack. Who cares about being dull, Jack? Follow your ambition. You can always play tomorrow. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). A person who doesn't know what to expect doesn't set limits. This is a reason many beginners get lucky and land in a sweeter place than those more familiar with the game. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Restless and searching for the best thing to do, you'll be something of a project gypsy, wandering from project to project nomadically, lingering as long as you feel like and then moving on. ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). There is no need to fight for what is already yours, but you should definitely show the world your stamp of ownership on it today, if only to remind the others of property boundaries. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). No one knows what goes on inside other people's homes. That's why intimate relationships—or even cordial ones, if they involve domestic hospitality—are more interesting than the best theater, especially this weekend. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Healing will start with a little nugget of truth. Who will be the one bold enough to bring that nugget out in the open? Probably you. Don’t feel the need to throw it. It’s enough to open your hand and give everyone a peek.
