By Matt Lopez The more than three-year saga over illegal development at developer Mohamed Hadid’s 901 Strada Vecchia megamansion in Bel Air appears to be coming to a conclusion. Hadid, 68, entered a no contest plea in Van Nuys Superior Court Tuesday morning in the ongoing case regarding his nearly 30,000-square-foot development at 901 Strada Vecchia in Bel-Air. The plea was entered through

his attorney, Robert Shapiro. Hadid, as has been customary throughout the case, did not appear in court. Superior Court Judge Eric Harmon made it clear that before sentencing, he wanted to hear from neighbors and community members about how they feel the megamansion has negatively impacted their community, and what they believe should be done to bring it into compliance. Venoco, a private oil and gas driller with the majority of its operations in California, assumed operation of the Beverly Hills drill site in 1995 via a lease agreement with BHUSD which automatically terminated oil extraction on Dec. 31, 2016. THIS ISSUE

By Laura Coleman The Beverly Hills Unified School District is grappling with just what to do about the Beverly Hills High School Oil Well after Wednesday’s ruling by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the District of Delaware Kevin Gross that Venoco, LLC was not on the hook to remediate the BHHS oil well. “Beginning at 12:01 a.m. (PTSD) on July 1, 2017, Venoco shall have no further responsibility to monitor the site,” stated Gross’s order. On April 17, less than four months after Venoco ceased operations at Beverly Hills’ final remaining oil well where it had been steadily sucking 300 barrels of crude oil a day from the ground for more than two decades via its lease with BHUSD, the energy company filed its second bankruptcy proceeding to liquidate under Chapter 11 in the state where it had incorporated. SALUTING WARREN ACKERMAN — The Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce and the Beverly Hills Conference and Visitors Bureau (CVB) honored Warren Ford Ackerman last week, on what would have been his 100th birthday, with a commemorative wall of photos and memorabilia, a luncheon and a plaque. Beverly Hills Police Warn Of Virtual Kidnapping Scam Targeting Residents By Matt Lopez An ongoing virtual kidnapping scam is targeting residents in Beverly Hills, the Beverly Hills Police said Thursday. A scammer will call the victim and claim to have a kidnapped family member. To add to the ruse, another voice will be heard in the background asking for help.

The scammer will ask for ransom money via wire transfer, such as Western Union. According to the BHPD, the alleged kidnapper will go to “great lengths” to keep the victim on the phone. Sure signs of a scam, the BHPD reports, are: incoming calls from an unknown longdistance number, the caller not

knowing the name of the person they kidnapped, the caller demanding you stay on the phone and not allow you to make other calls, or demanding ransom money via wire transfer or cash. Anyone who has received such a call should contact the Beverly Hills Police at 310550-4951.

Massive Privacy Breach At Rodeo Plastic Surgeon Puts Celebrity Info At Risk By Matt Lopez A massive privacy breach at a plastic surgery clinic on Rodeo Drive may put at risk the private information of many of the firm’s celebrity clientele. A spokesperson for Dr. Zain Kadri told media outlets Thursday that the records of some 15,000 patients were stolen by a disgruntled former employee who was fired for allegedly stealing from the practice. Some of the patients are alleged to be celebrities. Kadri’s practice is at 421 N. Rodeo

Dr. His bio on Yelp.com says: “His practice is located on the famed Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, home to A-list celebs and Kadri's high-profile clientele.” According to TMZ, the staff member not only stole financial information, but also took photos of patients during surgeries while they were unconscious and posted them on social media. The L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. is investing the theft, and the clinic's staff says it is racing to alert patients about the breach.

Mercer Vine Sells Iconic Marilyn Monroe Brentwood Home By Victoria Talbot Mercer Vine announced the sale of the Brentwood home that once belonged to Marilyn Monroe Thursday. The home at 12305 5th Helena Drive was listed last week for $6.9 million. Mercer Vine reports that it sold for $7.25 million. The seller’s agent was Lisa Optican; the buyer’s agent is undisclosed. “When you walk the house and grounds, you’re immediately struck by its serenity and warmth,” said Optican. “It’s an absolute oasis in the heart of one of the best neighborhoods

in Los Angeles.” According to Optican, the home retains many of the architectural elements that date to Monroe. In a Life magazine article released only weeks before her

death in 1962, Richard Meryman wrote, “She wanted to show me her house which she personally searched out and bought… she exclaimed, ‘It has walls.’” Meryman said that Monroe didn’t want photos taken of the house because, she said, “I don’t want everybody to see exactly where I live, what my sofa or my fireplace looks like.

Do you know the book Everyman? Well, I want to stay just in the fantasy of Everyman.” Meryman went on to say that it was, “the first home entirely her own she had ever had. She exulted in it… As she led me through the rooms, bare and makeshift as though someone lived there only temporarily, she described with loving

excitement each couch and table and dresser, where it would go and what was special about it.” Built in 1929 in an authentic Hacienda style, the home sits behind tall gates on a quiet cul-de-sac. The 4-bedroom, 3bath home is 2,624 square feet. Architectural details include open-beamed ceilings, terra cotta floors, casement windows and an expansive grassy yard, pool and orchard. The lot is the largest one on the cul-de-sac. Monroe was found dead on Aug. 5, 1962 in her home, purportedly of a barbiturate and alcohol overdose. Cedars-Sinai Kidney Transplant Pioneer Honored For Research Reducing Organ Rejection Stanley C. Jordan, MD, a leading kidney transplant researcher, has received the International Society of Nephrology’s highest honor for work that improves the lives of kidney transplant patients while preserving the resource of donated organs. Jordan, director of the Division of Nephrology and medical director of the Kidney Transplant Program at Cedars-Sinai, accepted the Jean Hamburger Award at the World Congress of Nephrology. It is the most prestigious award given by the nephrology society for research benefiting kidney patients. Jordan also was honored this month by the American Society of Transplantation, receiving the Senior Achievement Award in Clinical Transplantation. “Dr. Jordan is a pioneering clinician researcher who has advanced the field of organ transplantation by discovering a way to expand the size of the donor pool by reducing the risk that a patient’s body will reject a donated organ,” said Leon Fine, MD, vice dean of Research and Graduate Research Education at Cedars-Sinai. Jordan’s work in transplant immunology led to the development of drug therapy protocols that significantly reduce the risk that a kidney transplant patient’s immune system will reject the new organ. “It is a great honor, and humbling to me personally, to have our work recognized as being among the best in nephrology and immunology,” Jordan said. “Dr. Jean Hamburger was a major force in the early development of transplantation immunology. It is a privilege to carry on that tradition.”

She recently authored a New York Times bestseller Becoming Grandma: The Joys And Science Of The New Grandparenting, and enthralled the 150 attendees on her experiences as a reporter plus the joys of grandparenting. She is pictured with talk-show host Pam Atherton. Sandy Stackler is president of The Associates, while Diane Miller chaired the event. All proceeds are used in support of Jewish Home residents and its outreach programs. For information, call The Associates at 818-774-3375. ADVOCATING—Rep. Tony Cardenas (DCalif.) met with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles’ staff and patients to advocate for protecting children’s health-care services. “Medicare reform under the American Health Care Act threatens CHLA’s mission of creating hope and building healthier futures for children in Southern California and beyond,” said CHLA President/CEO Paul Viviano. “Forty-plus percent of the human beings in the U.S. who are doing well because of Medicaid,” said Cardenas. “Your rainy day fund is depleted. And for the first time ever, our medical expenses exceeded 20 percent of our income and so we qualified for a supplemental insurance,” said Jennifer Page, whose 12-year-old son Max has a congenital heart defect. Beverly Hills Hotel. She also said she plans to bring in speakers to talk about the new marijuana industry. Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Lurie moved with her family to Los Angeles at the age of 5. About 30 years ago, newly married to husband David Goldman (Beverly Hills High School Class of 1965), Lurie moved into the City with the intention of planting roots and raising a family. “We moved to Beverly Hills because we wanted to start a family and raise our kids and have them go to Beverly Hills schools,” she said. Her husband’s mother, Sookie Goldman, had been instrumental over the years in strengthening the community, such as by helping preserve Franklin Canyon and helping found the Theatre Guild and the Maple Counseling Center. Following the births of her two sons, Max and Zack Goldman, Lurie quickly became involved with her boys’ education, eventually serving as president of the El Rodeo PTA and later as president of the district’s PTA Council. A non-practicing attorney, Lurie eventually went on to serve on the Board of Education. During her tenure on the board, from 2003 to 2011, she worked with seven different superintendents. “I was very passionate about the schools and still am,” she said. “I always viewed the school board as the place where I could really make a difference.” Since 2012 she has served on the City’s Health & Safety Commission. She also currently serves on the Board for the Maple Counseling Center, Theatre 40 and Temple

Stabilization Ordinance. Discussions are being initiated by the City to provide landlords and tenants the opportunity to discuss solutions to problems that may arise with the new ordinance. The City will hold two community education workshops on the new ordinance, to familiarize tenants and land-

Emanuel, where she is the board’s executive VP. For Lurie, however, her involvement with Rotary will undeniably deepen as the year goes on. After Judi Fenton introduced her to Rotary, Lurie said she knew right away that it was the place for her. “I knew it was an organization that brought together a lot of our City’s leaders and it was an honor to be asked,” she said. “I’ve been a very, very enthusiastic member ever since. I love Rotary.” Highlights of Lurie’s membership in Rotary include transformational service trips that she’s taken with Rotarians from across the division where members have the opportunity to actively help people vastly less fortunate than they are. “My ‘Rotary Moment’ is when we bring wheel chairs and we put people into wheelchairs,” she said. “Sometimes they’re kids. Sometimes they’re older people who’ve never had a wheelchair. They’re disabled and they’ve just literally not been able to get around unless people carried them on their backs. They’re so excited. They’re so librated.” Lurie emphasized that in addition to traveling other places to help, on the local level Rotarians donate to charities and tutor school children, among other endeavors. “Rotary brings together people from a diverse group of community leaders including business leaders, political leaders, civic leaders, professional leaders, doctors, lawyers, real estate professionals ... and we’re all bound by a certain code of ethics that are the core values of Rotary.” Lurie will spend the next year working closely with her vice president, President-elect Jim Jahant.

ARTS & E N T E RTA I N M E N T Local Emerging Artist Torie Zalben To Present Debut L.A. Solo Exhibition Torie Zalben’s artworks are described as “painterly photographs,” steeped in dream worlds. Zalben, who grew up in Beverly Hills attending El Rodeo and a freshman year at BHHS will have her first solo show, “Eye Torrie Zalben Level - Visual Meditations,” Saturday, June 3, with an opening reception from 5-8 p.m., through Friday, June 9 at the Seyhoun Gallery, 9007 Melrose Ave. Drawing inspiration from her late grandmother Joyce Black’s rose garden and her interest in Transcendental Meditation (TM), Zalben “lets the flowers and petals, fountains and statues start guiding the photos I take.” (Either on her phone or with a Canon EOS 6D) She then digitally overlaps three or four negatives to “create a completely new world of fantastical and mystical imagery,” Zalben says. Her use of combining themes of altered states of consciousness along with images submerged in water are inspired by avant-garde 1940’s filmmaker Maya Deren. Art critic Peter Frank has written that her images “embrace the majesty of painting or play with collage-like juxtaposition.” Zalben (www.toriezalben.com) attended the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU, where her work is part of the school’s permanent collection, and has an MA in video art, performance and creative writing with

focus on new media and 360 immersive technology. She’s a founding member of the ICA LA Next Gen. board and host-committee member for Project Angel Food. She’ll have the nonprofit’s “Do Gooding” cookies at the reception, hosted by Victor Finley, along with popsicles from Rose’s Foundation, which creates employment opportunities for all abilities. She plans to have seven large format photos (some as big as 60” x 40”) at the show along with a video art installation. Involved with the David Lynch Foundation since 2011, today Zalben sits on its L.A. Advisory Board. “I have been meditating for six years and it has positively transformed my life,” she says. A portion of art sales will benefit the foundation, which teaches TM to at-risk populations around the world.

Carnival Of Souls Star Candace Hilligoss-Coster To Discuss Cult Classic, New Autobiography At Cinematheque Screening Sunday Candace Hilligoss-Coster, star of the iconic Carnival Of Souls, will discuss the now cult classic and her new memoir, following an 8 p.m. screening of the psychological thriller, Sunday, June 4 at the Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd. Some friends read her new book, The Odyssey And The Idiocy: Marriage To An Actor, A Memoir, of which a large part is devoted to behind-the-scenes accounts of the event-filled four-week Carnival shoot—filmed in Lawrence, Kan. and outside Salt Lake City—and suggested the screening and Q&A, sponsored by American Cinematheque. The book talks about mariage to an actor, Hilligoss-Coster calls him Richard Forest in the book, and an “armageddon” of a divorce after 20 years of marriage supporting an in-and-out-of-work actor and giving up her own career. The book is also a chance for Hilligoss-Coster to answer fan questions about the 55-year-old film (1962). In the Herk Harvey-directed film, after a car accident that kills her friends, Mary Henry (Hilligoss) takes a job in a new town and tries to start over—but a phantom figure follows her until she visits an abandoned carnival and dark secrets come to light. The film is shown once a year in London as part of The British Film Society’s repertoire that considers it one of the 100 most important films. Martin

Scorsese has a print in his private collection, and it influenced Beatlemania, Jacob’s Ladder, Carrie and Blue Velvet, HilligossCoster says. She believes Harvey and coCandace writer John Clifford, Hilligoss-Coster working on a film with a $10,000 budget, “couldn’t rely on big effects. So they went for psychological terror. They tapped into the fear of being dead, but on earth, and what happens to your identity when on one can see you.” She reveals that getting her most famous part was due to modesty. She had been cast in Black Autumn (renamed) Violent Midnight, 1963) with James Farentino and Shepperd Strudwick, but turned it down because it required two nude scenes. “I told my family I’d never embarrass them,” says Hilligoss-Coster. Locally, Hilligoss is competition coordinator for the Beverly Hills Theater Guild—Julie Harris Playwright Award Competition, the largest competition for new plays in the U.S. Many of the winners have been producted by Theater 40, a main beneficiary of the guild. Bill To Overhaul Makeup Of Metro Board Of Directors Passes State Senate

A bill to overhaul the makeup of the Metro Board of Directors that is opposed by the board and the Los Angeles City Council was passed by the California State Senate Thursday. The bill, SB 268, was authored by Sen. Tony Mendoza and passed by a vote of 22 to 12. The Metro board consists of 13 voting members and a non-voting representative of the governor. All five members of the Board of Supervisors are members of the Metro board, along with the mayor of Los Angeles, three appointees of the mayor and a represen-

tative from each of the county's four sub-regions. SB 268 would eliminate three members of the Board of Supervisors from the Metro board while adding three members from the county's subregions. It would also eliminate the Los Angeles mayor's three appointees in favor of five L.A. City Councilmembers. Mendoza has said the county's other 87 cities are underrepresented on the board and its projects often benefit Los Angeles at the expense of smaller cities.

Max Factor Foundation Awards Grant To Law Center Against Gun Violence The Max Factor Family Foundation (MFFF) has awarded a $50,000 grant to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence for an audit of L.A. County's existing gun laws, which will be used to inform and advocate smart and effective countywide gun law reform. David Factor, a MFFF trustee, commented: “Each year, our private family foundation selects a single focus area for a large grant award that we hope

will have a deep impact in our community and a ripple effect far beyond the specific project we support.” The MFFF, established more than 70 years ago by six descendants of legendary makeup mogul and Beverly Hills resident Max Factor, has worked for the last decade with the Jewish Community Foundation of L.A., which provides resources, expertise, and connections to private family foundations.

Beverly Hills Salary Survey - What It All Means

June 2, 2017 | Page 15

This week, the Courier releases the second part of its list of Beverly Hills City employee salary and benefits. This year’s chart is based on 2016 financial data and will be released in multiple parts, because of the large amount of City employees. Last week, the first part was released. Adding all the different types of income and benefits together, the charts will reveal that in total, the City footed a $126.9 million bill for employees in 2016, up 14 percent from 2015. Employee salaries and benefits are matters of public record under California statutes and multiple court decisions. The Courier requested date of hire, names and titles. Next week, the Courier will print the third part of the chart, along with comparisons against neighboring cities. City employees fall under the Public Employee Retirement System. Beverly Hills grants “Classic” safety (police and fire) employees (those in the PERS system prior to January 2013) retirement benefits equal to 3-percent of their highest-ever compensation multiplied by each year of service to a maximum of 30 years. Newer safety employees (those in the PERS system after January 2013) receive 2.7 percent of highest year compensation for each year of service. All non-safety “Classic” employees receive 2.5 percent of their highest annual compensation multiplied by each year of service and newer non-safety employees receive 2.0 percent for each year of service. “Classic” CalPERS safety members may retire at either 50 or 55 (depending on when they began working for the City), while newer safety employees after January 2013 can retire at 57. “Classic” non-safety members may retire at 55, while newer non-safety employees may retire at age 62. A “Classic” safety employee with 30 years of service receives 90-percent of highest pay, plus health benefits (if hired prior to July 2012), plus cost-of-living adjustments. Base Pay: The fixed salary an employee is paid on a yearly basis. Overtime Pay: Compensation for hours worked beyond the employee's fixed amount of time allocated for a workweek. Pay for Performance/Bonus Pays: Any extra performance incentives or bonus compensation for meeting specific goals that an employee receives. “It’s a program for our management, professional

and executive folks based on performance, goals and objectives that are set up at the beginning of the year. They are evaluated at the end of the year and depending on how well they met those goals and objectives, they would qualify for some amount of pay for performance, which can be all the way from one percent to 10 percent of a total pool of dollars. It’s the closest thing we have in the government sector to performance plans and that sort of thing.” - City CFO Don Rhoads. As for bonuses, Rhoads said that if an employee does something “particularly meritorious,” there is a provision where a bonus can be given. Car Allowance/Other Pays: Car Allowance is a stipend to help offset the cost of an employee using their own vehicle for City work. Other Pays generally falls under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which allows an employee to receive funds in a different category while they are out on personal leave. Uniform Allowance: Police, and Fire Department and some Public Works employees receive a uniform allowance, which is used to clean and maintain their City uniforms. Leave Payoffs: When an employee has an excess amount of vacation time, beyond what is needed on the books, it can be paid off in a lump amount. Cafeteria Plan: An employee health benefits plan that allows an employee to chose from a variety of benefit plans. What the employee doesn’t spend on a health plan, they get back in the form of additional wages. This column is what the employee gets back after money is not spent. Total Pay: The total amount of take-home income

an employee receives. Retirement: The amount the City pays toward an employee’s PERS retirement plan. Deferred Compensation: A matching deferred contribution between the City and Employee, where the employee contributes a certain amount of their paycheck, tax-deferred, which is matched by the City. Health/Dental/Vision: The amount the City pays toward an employees various health insurance plans. RHS Health: An employee Retirement Health Savings plan. Total Benefits: All monies an employee receives that do not count toward their take-home pay. Total Compensation: The full cost of an employee to the City of Beverly Hills. Sick, Administrative or Universal Leave/Vacation: Rhoads says: “These hours don’t add any additional cost to the other columns. The only way they add cost is if someone doesn’t use all their leave at the end of the year, so they want to cash it out. That would generate additional cost outlay, which shows in the ‘leave payouts’ column. If someone used their leave time, it would be recorded in the salary column.” Sick leave is now being called Universal Leave because, according to Rhoads: regular part-time employees technically earn “universal leave”, which can be used for either sick time or vacation time. For all other employees, sick leave and vacation leave can only be used for their intended purpose. Note: the majority of City employees work a 9/80 (nine eighty hour days every two weeks) or 4/10 (four 10 hour days per week), meaning they get off either every Monday/Friday, or every other Monday/Friday.

CodeREV Kids Expands Popular Coding And STEAM Summer Camps

L

eading Coding (programming) for kids and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education innovator—CodeREV—has expanded its popular tech summer camps to get more students coding and creating instead of losing critical skills over the summer. CodeREV offers its camps locally throughout L.A. including in Westwood, and for the second year in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica and Encino. Through CodeREV tech summer camps, students from first through ninth grade learn skills that are not only useful and fun for creating incredible school projects, including coding, higher-order thinking, math, game development and robotics; but skills that will also help define the knowledge workers of tomorrow need to know. In addition, the camps offer fun and unique outdoor activities that strengthen team-building and allow students to run and play. “We all know that most kids love to play video games, but they love to create them even more. At CodeREV, we teach kids how to create their own eyepopping video games and 3D worlds and use engaging games like Minecraft to sharpen their math skills,” said

Evan Boorman

CodeREV Founder and CEO Evan Boorman. “Learning to navigate the world of Java and become a Minecraft creator who can change the rules of their favorite video game is incredibly exciting to the average 11 or 12

year old. “Educators know that over the summer months, students typically lose up to one third of the knowledge they learned in the previous school year. Our camps not only help students retain those skills, they help prepare them for fields that employers report are in short supply. Students love our camps because the courses and skills they learn are fun and geared toward their interests. “We have kids interested in the field and newcomers not into math and science,” says Boorman, “We make the hands-on experience related to things kids care about. “We feel really fortunate to be in such an exciting place where we can

CodeREV instructors have real work experience in the areas they teach including video game and app development, software engineering and robotics. “We’re really fortunate to have instructors who are passionate about the field and want to give back,” says CodeREV founder Evan Boorman.

bring out the inner creator in so many kids,” Boorman says. “It’s an amazing experience. Parents love our tech summer camps because the curriculum is relevant to high-demand 21st century skills.” CodeREV is led by Boorman, a former pre-calculus, algebra II and geometry teacher who has worked in STEM education for 15 years, and Chief Education Innovation Officer John Stuppy, Ph.D. Stuppy is a nationally recognized leader in education, technology

game-based learning and student achievement. He has held education leadership positions for more than three decades in companies such as Sylvan Learning Centers and TutorVista. The camps are staffed by a dedicated team of educators, each of whom has both technology education experience and previous work experience in the ever-growing tech industry. ANNIVERSARY TIME– The Jeffrey Foundation’s 45th anniversary was celebrated in grand style. Joining in the fun were (above, from left): Ronnie Kassorla, Beverly Cohen, Barbara Winterns, Helen Rosen, Ila Krane, Bonnie Bowden and Mara New; (left photo): founder/honoree Alyce Morris Winston, Georgia Tolliver, and emcee Christine Devine. The Jeffrey Foundation and its “Circle of Love” committee (i.e. Joanna Kermani, Suz Landay, Beverly Cohen, Mara New, Poppy Paulos, Linda Schwartz, Elaine Dupont Bernard, Mauria McPoland, and Lorraine Spector) staged its 45th anniversary dinner at the Olympic Collection and honored its founder Alyce Morris Winston. Music and entertainment

were provided for the 140 on hand by songstress Bonnie Bowden and TV star Peter Marshall with Channel 11’s Christine Devine handling the emcee chores. The goal of this year’s “Circle of Love” campaign was to raise $500,000 for educational and therapeutic children’s programs that include parent counseling and community education programs pro-

vided through the Special Child and Family Resource Center. The Jeffrey Foundation is a premier service provider for atrisk and special needs children. It provides a full-continuum of family-centered programs that include counseling, parent training, community education, technology based training and educational appropriate programs for infants, children, teens and young adults up to 22 years of age. ****** Singers and songwriters Artie Butler, Mac Davis, Charles Fox, Dr. Dee & The Bythax Choir, Bill and Kori Withers at an intimate concert benefiting the Fulfillment Fund. The audience sang along with famous songs such as Lean On Me, Killing Me Softly, and Ain’t No Sunshine, to name a few. A special award was presented to Charles Fox by the Fulfillment Fund Co-Founder, Dr. Gary Gitnick, for Fox’s many years of dedication to the organization. 360 team members and the entire management,” said Beny Alagem, Waldorf-Astoria Beverly Hills owner and the man responsible for luring a chef with three Michelin stars to Beverly Hills. “My staff and I are so excited to have the opportunity to become part of the Beverly Hills community,” said Vongerichten yesterday. “I am also looking forward to the great many years of partnership with the Waldorf-Astoria Beverly Hills and Beny Alagem.” Open and airy with nary an artwork on the wall, the Pierre-Yves Rochon-designed restaurant has a menu which features a veritable panoply of the best in California cuisine. Local favorites like ahi tuna tartar with crushed avocado and crispy sushi layered with ocean trout and a tangy chipotle emulsion - featured on the “Raw” section - offered an enjoyable beginning to a menu laden with offerings of pizza, pasta, salad, fish, meat and sides. The Colorado lamb chops proved a particularly savory dish while the coconut milk featured in the herbal broth surrounding the halibut offered a culinary adventure for the palate. Desserts like the strawberry ice cream sundae and the warm chocolate cake make a fine ending.

The service is excellent, and – the food is marvelous. The Jean-Georges signature broiled shrimp salad has finally arrived in California with a new definition of what shrimp should be. The endive and sugar snap pea “Caesar” is a delicate blend of Parmesan tart and sweet snap peas, served gracefully open-faced atop a bed of endive. Not to be missed is the caramelized beef tenderloin, which has its own palette of flavors and a texture similar to butter. A Jean-Georges dessert is a burst of flavors, delicately balancing sweetness with a charming subtlety that doesn’t overwhelm. Upstairs, the rooftop lounge JG promises to serveheritage poolside fare and more. Against the backdrop of a living wall, the casual sundrenched patio sports 360-degree views of the Los Angeles Country Club to the west and the City of Beverly Hills at its most poignant intersection of Santa Monica and Wilshire Boulevards to the east. The 12-story hotel boasts 170 guest rooms including the Beverly Hills Suite at 1,102 square feet. A grand opening is anticipated in late June.

“I need to hear from a competent witness, who can tell specifically what remedial actions need to be taken, so I can fashion an order that would insure this is brought into compliance as quickly as possible,” Harmon said. Assistant City Attorney Tina Hess noted that the City Attorney’s office has already received at least a half dozen public comments from neighbors and community members. City officials allege that the home, which includes a subterranean IMAX theater, violated L.A. building code with several unapproved features – including concrete decks, retaining walls, basements and stairways. Hess also has asked for a bond to ensure that if bringing the structure into compliance cannot be done legally, that the city will have funds to pay for its demolition. Hadid has pushed for more time to revise plans, but new building standards in Bel Air call into question whether the

home could ever be brought into compliance without a complete teardown. New Bel Air construction laws call for homes bigger than 17,500 square feet to undergo rigorous environmental review. Hadid has remained steadfast that the home would never been torn down. “Demolish this house? Never!” he was quoted in Town And Country magazine as saying. “This house will last forever. Bel-Air will fall before this will.” James T. Zelloe, a Virginia attorney who had been listed as a managing agent on the property for years, did not enter a plea through his attorney on Tuesday morning. Zelloe’s attorney said he was in the process of settlement talks with the city attorney, and said his case should be separated from that of Hadid. Zelloe’s attorney said his client would be fine with seeing the home torn down, because he currently has no vested stake in the property. Harmon, however, wasn’t quite buying it. “I’m not sure if the claim

that he’s not able to bring the property into compliance, or at least help in some respect, is well taken,” Harmon said. “It seems to me that if you had a hand in constructing this… and financing it… if you’re able to create that situation, you ought to be able to fix that situation.” Hadid is scheduled to be sentenced June 27. According to a proposed sentencing memorandum prepared by the city attorney’s office, city prosecutors are asking that Hadid be placed on three years probation and be ordered to perform 200 hours of community labor and pay $3,000 in fines. Prosecutors are also calling for him to pay $250,000 into a community improvement fund. “These were serious violations,” City Attorney Mike Feuer said in a statement. “It was essential to hold the defendant accountable for committing them. We have building and safety rules for a reason and no one is above the law. At the sentencing hearing we’ll make our case for strong and appropriate sanctions.”

Delaware bankruptcy court to compel Venoco to remain onsite, fully comply with environmental laws, and to prevent Venoco from exhausting the debtor estate resources that could be used for that purpose. Venoco claimed it had no obligation to remediate the drill site because the lease obligations were discharged by bankruptcy. “It is upsetting that the court allows Venoco to escape their obligations to clean up the site,” said Mayor Lili Bosse. “The City will now consider our options to address this appalling situation.” Although Judge Gross found the circumstances “troubling,” he ruled the oil well presented “no imminent and identifiable harm” that would require Venoco to remain onsite to decommission the well, or to reserve funds for that purpose. Superintendent Michael Bregy said he felt the Delaware judge “failed to fully comprehend our health and safety concerns." “The court decision is a real setback for our school community as it clearly sends a

notification process, is July 14. The utility relocation will take 44 working days to complete, less than the original estimate of 60 days, said Shuda. The utility’s underground vault is located on Reeves Drive. To access the lines, Metro will dig a ditch from the alley on Canon Drive (behind the Montage Hotel), across Wilshire Boulevard and down Reeves Drive. “Our work window was determined by looking at impacts,” said Shuda, explaining that working at night, “would disturb residents and hotel guests abutting the work area.” Weekday work would impact prominent lunch traffic on Canon Drive at Spago and Citizen restaurants. At the April 20 City Council meeting, Metro was directed to work with these restaurants to reduce impacts for guests who valet park on northbound Canon Drive, and who rely on making a left turn onto Canon Drive from Wilshire Boulevard to access the service at lunch time. Shuda explained that Metro and the restaurant owners had reached a compromise for the 28 days of turn-restrictions on Canon Drive, which would entail signage to indicate a detour before reaching Canon and staggering the days to include long Sundays (9 a.m. – 6 p.m.) and a Monday – to— Wednesday work schedule during left-turn closures. Several detours have been planned for the project, comprised of five distinct stages of work. Shuda showed maps of the proposed detours, using Crescent Drive, Beverly Drive

Following the ruling, Latham said that in accordance with state law, the California Division of Conservation, Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR) promptly ordered Venoco to “plug and abandon” the wells. The City of Beverly Hills also issued an administrative compliance order directing Venoco to remove all drilling equipment, concrete foundations, oil soaked soil, and debris from the drill site. City Attorney Larry Wiener said he is currently studying the case but anticipates the school district and City will take a collaborative approach in response to the ruling. “The City Council isn’t on the hook for it,” he emphasized, noting that the school district had reached out to the City for support. “It’s unfortunate that Venoco isn’t being held responsible for something that it’s clearly obligated to do.” "We are exploring all our options in light of this ruling,” stated BHUSD counsel William Ireland. and Dayton Way to access the valet parking during the “no left turn” period. She gave no pause for questions until the end of her presentation package, when one astute resident pointed out that one of the detours directed drivers the wrong way on Dayton Way, a one-way street. Shuda said it would be corrected on the Metro website by Thursday, at metro.net. This is a preliminary phase of work; the project will not be completed until 2020. Shuda proposed that the community might consider closing Canon Drive or Wilshire Boulevard during the heaviest construction – up to five years – to speed construction and to avoid intermittent traffic delays by creating a semi-permanent detour. This phase will entail some power outages, said Shuda. Residents will be individually notified 24-hours in advance and these outages will commonly be scheduled to occur at night only. For businesses, Metro will work with them to optimize their production. When questioned, Shuda was unemotional about the portion of the project that will be underneath Beverly Hills High School and the impact of years-long traffic delays, and unapologetic about the power outages or the absence of any parking at any of the stations. “SCE is not required to provide power,” she said. “Metro will, however, will provide portable toilets if there is a water shut-off.” According to Shuda, Metro estimates that 30,000 people will use the projected $6.3 billion project by 2020.

Chairman 2014 Paula Kent Meehan President & Publisher Marcia Wilson Hobbs ******

LETTER TO THE EDITOR In the last few days, we were afforded the opportunity to participate in the “pre-opening” experience of the new Waldorf Astoria. The hotel is, as expected, a remarkable addition to Beverly Hills and the surrounding community and greatly compliments the other fine hotels in the area. This remarkable achievement only came about because of the persistence of the developer, the endorsement of many citizens and a very close election process in 2008. After all of the aforementioned, I think we should applaud the developers for what they have presented to our City and the manner in which they complied with all the building requirements, as well as improvements to Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards. They have proven to be worthy of our appreciation and congratulations. During the past year or so, the same developers attempted to improve the already approved plan to enhance and enlarge The Beverly Hilton site and, in so doing opted to bypass the arduous task of many planning and City Council meetings and take the plan directly to the voters as was done for the Waldorf. There were, in fact, about 20 City meetings to gain the “in place” approval. But in the infinite wisdom of the then mayor, who got his “fur up” because the City did not get another chance at denial, our voters were not given a fair opportunity to appraise the value of the new development that included a magnificent garden area and only one, albeit high, condominium building. Is it too late to get the right development, now that we see what has been done next door? I hope not. I humbly request that the new council (and mayor) will discuss the possibility of inviting The Beverly Hilton group to revisit the 2016 proposed development, knowing how expertly and efficiently it performed on the Waldorf. I am not sure if they want to. I only know that I do. Roger W. Behrstock

****** As I approached the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevard, something caught my eye. I looked up through the front windshield of my car and saw that someone had constructed the front section of a Carnival Line Fiesta Cruise Ship at the “apex of the golden triangle.” And to make matters worse, called it the Waldorf Astoria. I immediately called Mr and Mrs. Waldorf or Astoria in New York and texted them a photo of the cruise ship. Within minutes, their attorneys were on the way to JFK to catch the red eye to L.A. They will appear before an emergency session of the Beverly Hills City Council demanding the Waldorf Astoria name be removed from the hull and replaced with something more appropriate like the Titanic or possibly the Lusitania. Thanks to the Courier using the Freedom of Information Act, the paper uncovered minutes of a closed meeting between the Community (“Over-Development”) Department and undisclosed members of the City politic, It was at this meeting that plans for this construction was voted on and approved. Be it hereby resolved that: 1.Climate change was occurring at an alarming pace. Witness the changes in temperature from day to day, and even between morning, afternoon and night. 2.These rapid changes were causing glaciers to break off from the North Pole ice pack and will soon be floating down the L.A. river towards our City. 3.Taking a page from the Bible, like Noah, the City of Beverly Hills will now be fully prepared with its own ark. 4.Current and past City officials along with lobbyists and their families will have reserved upper deck suites with the below steerage quarters assigned to the City's renters on a first come, first serve basis. Bon voyage Robert Block

With Superb Acting, The Churchill Movie Depicts A Different Side Of The Esteemed British Icon Jerry Cutler On Film Churchill is the latest film drama to depict the iconic British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, concentrating on his later life in politics as he tries to recapture his stature and worldwide fame as a brilliant tactician and leader. It opens a few days prior to June 6, 1944 - the D-Day invasion. As hundreds and thousands of Allied soldiers are preparing to attack Nazi-occupied Europe, Churchill, wanting desperately to re-instate himself in the eyes of the allies as an invincible leader in the free world, disagrees with the plans. He fears, the way it has been set up, thousands of young allied soldiers will be slaughtered. Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, commander of the D-Day operations, and British military commander, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, object to his decision and his presence which is a severe blow to his ego and status.

The movie is blessed with outstanding performances by Brian Cox as Churchill and Miranda Richardson as his wife Clementine. As director Jonathan Teplitzky guides Churchill through his outbursts and various mood changes, it is the seemingly invincible Clementine who is always there to calm his temperament. Never relenting, Churchill, thinking about his stature in history which he believes is shrinking in the eyes of his contemporaries, vociferously countermands Eisenhower, played by a very competent John Slattery, who adamantly refuses to change his mind. The D-Day invasion will proceed as planned. Churchill resorts to tantrums and bouts of drinking. Once again, it is Clementine’s strength and commitment to her illustrious husband that settles him down. We are privy to a side of the great man never exhibited in film before. We sympathize with his efforts in trying to regain his withering stature. The guilt he harbors for his prior mistakes while serving

as prime minister of England is a driving force behind his rants as he feels Eisenhower is wrong in his calculations. But, we also feel his compassion as he pleads for the lives of thousands of young men who will most assuredly lose their lives. Churchill the movie, does not come off as smooth as it should and you might have some difficulty in following the action. However, you will be transfixed with Cox and Richardson in the pivotal roles as well as the historical events. If you are a history buff, you will be satisfied and if you are a moviegoer who delights in terrific acting, you will not be disappointed. 3 Bagels out of 4

Astrology By Holiday Mathis TODAY/S BIRTHDAY (June 2). Your work gets simultaneously more challenging and more creative over the next two months, and by the end of August you'll have a prize to show for your dedication. Loved ones will have interesting propositions in September. You won/t regret what you do, only what you don/t do, so be adventurous in your choices. Libra and Capricorn adore you. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). It’s a good thing you have quick reflexes, because you’ll need them in today’s dicey social scenario. You might have to backpedal, pull your proverbial foot out of your mouth, or jump in to save someone from sure embarrassment. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Your No. 1-priority task will get done. The rest may not. So put the important stuff first. What’s important? It’s not a trick question. You know the answer–just not the same one another person wants you to choose. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The work will be much more pleasant when you have the right tools for the job. Do research. Getting this one right before you even start will save you time, money and headaches. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). If you’re too strict with yourself, you will surely rebel. Loosen up. Otherwise you may find yourself craving forbidden fruits (maybe ones you didn’t even know you liked!) in reaction to trying to be too perfect. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). The rightness of an action makes you brave. You don’t even have to think about it. You dive in and do the necessary thing. The time to be frightened is not before or during; it’s after. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). No one is really better than another, but our egos have us flexing as if there's something at stake to be be won with an air of superiority. You’ll really win by going in the opposite direction. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Patience isn't the most exciting virtue, and many who don’t see its appeal. However, those who have patience can win the whole game by avoiding mistakes impatient people make. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). To complain is to release some tension and perhaps gain the acknowledgement of a person who agrees. But this comes at a cost. Maybe the tension is a good thing if it forces you to take action instead of complain. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). When a bee becomes incensed, it stings the offender and then shortly after pays a price with his own life. Anger is not usually as costly an emotion for humans, and yet it’s still a good idea to de-escalate conflict. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20). Just because you're not in step with the others doesn't mean your timing is off. Awareness is key here, because you’re really good at adjusting to the pace of others when you want to. The question is: “Do you want to?” ARIES (Mar. 21-Apr. 19). Once the drama stirs up, you’re sunk. If you defend yourself too well, you look guilty. If you don’'t, there will be regrets. The best defense is prevention. Don’t let conversations drift into dangerous waters. Stay in control. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20). Your attention is a treasured gift, though neglect is not a terrible insult. It's just you can't focus on everyone at once. Careful not to set up expectations you won't want to or be able to fulfill.
