By Victoria Talbot By the time the Courier was on its way to the printer last week with a story revealing that Branden Williams was the proponent who submitted 2,966 signatures to repeal the City’s newly enacted Basement Ordinance last Friday, Williams appears to have been in damage control mode.

He had engaged Aviv Tuchman as counsel who simultaneously emailed this reporter and the Courier with a threat of legal action for “Potential Defamatory Statements & Demand to Correct and/or Remove Defamatory Materials.”

“Mr. Williams has advised me that you are contemplating publishing yet another article about him which he believes will contain false statements. If you and your newspaper commit libel against him in any such contemplated article, my client reserves the right to pursue legal action against the Beverly Hills Courier and you personally for any defamatory statements.”

At the same time, his wife Rayni, a salesperson with Hilton & Hyland, whose license is listed with the Department of Real Estate under Rayni Romito, was trying to broker a resolution.

Before it was too late,

Williams was presented with the opportunity to make it clear that his resignation from the antiBasement Ordinance Petition Committee was not a subterfuge - but a legitimate withdrawal from the efforts of his client, Francisco Aquilini, to repeal the Basement Ordinance.

The information, which became known to the Courier as deadline approached, included the following statement, which was to be submitted to City Clerk Byron Pope prior to 10 a.m. April 13, when Pope was preparing to drive the documents with the signatures to the County Registrar Recorder’s office for validation:

Had he submitted the letter, it would have been over, no signatures would have been delivered and the Basement Ordinance would be secure.

Chabad In The Hills Rabbi To Lead New Course On Human Existence

By Matt Lopez A new course taught by Rabbi Mordechai Kirschenbaum of Chabad of Beverly Hills aims to “rethink everything you know about the universe, the laws of nature, your own consciousness, and the very idea of existence and reality itself,” the rabbi said.

The course, “What Is? Rethinking Everything We Know About Our Universe,” draws on ancient Jewish teachings to re-examine the most basic

building blocks of existence from the ground up.

The six-week course will cover topics such as “Is the world real?”

“Who is God?” “Why does evil exist?”

“Is time travel possible?” “What is consciousness” and “Are we bound by fate?”

Man Arrested At Taylor Swift’s Beverly Hills Home With Knife, Rope, Ammo

By Matt Lopez Taylor Swift received another scare at her Beverly Hills home last weekend.

Julius Sandrock, 38, of Colorado, was arrested Saturday outside of her home on suspicion of felony stalking.

Sandrock was wearing a mask and had a knife, rope and ammunition in his car, according to reports. Swift, who also has a home in New York, was not in her Beverly Hills residence at the time.

According to BHPD Sgt. Giovanni Trejo, officers responded to the 1200 block of Laurel Lane at about 2:40 p.m. on Saturday when a member of Swift’s security detail called about a “suspicious subject in the area.”

Police found probable cause to

arrest Sandrock, who was later released on Tuesday, pending further investigation. Police were, however, able to obtain a temporary restraining order that prevents Sandrock from possessing guns.

Sandrock reportedly told officers that he owned three firearms and was on probation in Colorado for firing one.

Prescription medications, including oxycodone, were also reportedly found in Sandrock’s possession.

On April 8, a homeless man was arrested on suspicion of trespassing after attempting to climb a wall at Swift’s Beverly Hills property. Swift was also not home during that incident.

Longtime Beverly Hills Resident Gene Galen Dies At 84

By Laura Coleman Eugene “Gene” Howard Galen passed away at 84 in his Beverly Hills home on April 16 after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family. A longtime Beverly Hills resident and a respected physician in the community for over 30 years, Gene was beloved by many for his passion and dedication to helping others.

A lover of life with indefatigable enthusiasm for his family and the world around him, Gene was also an inventor as well as a doctor of internal medicine.

He invented the “Galen Capsule” for performing intestinal biopsies in addition to making many other contributions to the field of medicine.

Born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey to Samuel and Dora Galinsky, Gene graduated from Perth Amboy High School in 1952, where he was president of the student council and played the trumpet in the high school band. Upon completion of high school, Gene attended Johns Hopkins University and graduated in three years with Phi Beta Kappa Honors. He went on to earn his M.D. in 1959 from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center and subsequently completed his postgradu-

ate training in internal medicine at the Boston City Hospital Medical Center and at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco before completing his education with a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Los Angeles Veterans Administration Center.

During his last year in medical school he met the love of his life, Suzanne Kalkstein, and they were married shortly thereafter. Gene and Sue later settled in Beverly Hills where he practiced internal medicine.

Gene loved travel, music, sailing, cycling and especially his family. He loved to study languages and by the age of 16, he was fluent in both French and German, and of course English. Later he also learned to speak both Spanish and, most impressive of all, taught himself to speak Russian. (see ‘GENE GALEN’ page 16)

Beverly Hills Man To Be Sentenced In Immigration Fraud Case

Wiener’s Housing Densification Bill SB827 Stalls in Committee

By Victoria Talbot In a 5-4 vote, the controversial housing densification bill SB827 proposed by Northern California State Sen. Scott Wiener has become stalled in the Housing Committee, killing it for this year, but leaving it open for another try in 2019. The bill that would legislate statewide densification around “transit corridors” including bus stops, overriding local density and height ordinances and allowing apartments and condos of up to five stories within half mile in areas currently zoned for single-family dwellings. The bill also eliminated parking requirements.

“I have always known there was a real possibility that SB827 – like other difficult and impactful bills that have come before – was going to take more than one year,” said Wiener.

“California’s housing costs are unsustainable … California needs to get to the heart of our housing shortage… or we will become a hollowed-out state with no middle class.”

The bill would have had a dramatic effect on coastal areas with mass transit, and in one version, would have affected over 190,000 single-family parcels in Los Angeles. Most of Beverly

Hills would have been affected, creating elite single-family districts with parking spaces throughout the city, completely reshaping neighborhoods with five-story multi-family dwellings in areas currently zoned for single-family housing, including in the Central area.

In Los Angeles, San Francisco and Beverly Hills elected officials wrote resolutions in opposition to the bill.

Opposition came from across the political landscape, including lowincome housing groups worried about displacement and gentrification and destruction of historic neighborhoods.

Only a small portion of the projects would be mandated for low-income housing.

“Housing is an issue,” agreed Vice Mayor John Mirisch, who has openly sparred with Wiener and his supporters, “but SB827 is the wrong prescription: kind of like trying to cure psoriasis with an appendectomy.”

“My job is to take the conversation started by SB827 and get to work on developing a proposal that meets the ambitious goals of this bill,” said Wiener. “I look forward to working in the coming months to develop a strong proposal for next year.”

By Matt Lopez A Beverly Hills man charged with immigration fraud was sentenced Thursday to 15 months in prison.

Hee Sun “Leonard” Shim, 54, of Beverly Hills, and other co-defendants allegedly owned four Southern California schools that enrolled foreign nationals who fraudulently obtained immigration documents that allowed them to remain in the country as “students.”

The problem, however, was that those “students” rarely ever attended school.

According to court records, the “pay-to-stay” scheme involved three schools in Koreatown and one in Alhambra.

The schools reportedly issued immigration papers to the foreign nationals, many of whom did not even live in California.

Shim allegedly created fake transcripts to deceive immigration officials.

In exchange for those documents, which allowed them to remain in the country, the students made what they believed were tuition payments to Shim to remain enrolled in the schools.

Shim was also ordered by U.S. District Judge George H. Wu to pay to the United States about $500,000 in funds that were seized by investigators.

HONORING HENRY – Assemblyman Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) on Monday honored longtime Beverly Hills optometrist Henry Oster in Sacramento as part of the State Assembly’s 15th annual Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony. Oster and his parents were forced onto a train and sent to the Lodz Ghetto in October of 1941, when he was just 13-years-old. Henry was made to work 12-hour days in the fields and the local cemetery. Henry’s father died of starvation within six months. In 1944, Henry and his mother were deported from the Lodz Ghetto, forced into cattle cars, and transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau Death Camp. Upon arriving at the extermination facility of Birkenau, Oster was selected for slave labor and his mother was murdered in the gas chambers. He managed to survive three separate selections for the gas chambers.

Novel Combination Of Cancer Drugs Tested, John Wayne Cancer Center Enrolls First Patient In Nationwide Clinical Trial The John Wayne Cancer Institute at Providence Saint John’s Health Center has enrolled the first cancer patient in a groundbreaking clinical trial of three immunotherapy drugs combined to use the body’s immune system to diminish tumors related to several types of cancer.

Steven O’Day, M.D., professor of medical oncology and director of Immuno-Oncology and Clinical Research at the John Wayne Cancer Institute, is known globally for his expertise in melanoma and in immunotherapy for cancer. He brought the trial to the Santa Monica research program and he and the institute’s team of experts plan to enroll patients across a number tumor types.

The Incyte ECHO-208 trial tests the safety, tolerability and effectiveness of two novel combinations of three drugs that have been used individually and

even in pairs, but never as a triplet where each medication provides a complementary function in tackling malignant tumors.

Previously immunotherapy combinations have shown promising results for patients with many different cancers including melanoma and lung, bladder, liver, ovarian and breast cancers, among others.

Dr. Steven O’Day Incyte Corp. anticipates enrolling 141 candidates across the country. The study is open to patients whose disease has progressed despite treatment, who can’t tolerate treatment or who refuse standard treatment.

ARTS & E N T E RTA I N M E N T She Still Loves Lucy, Resident’s New Book Chronicles Longtime Friendship With Lucille Ball Lucille Ball would have celebrated another birthday on April 26. Though she died in 1989, the beloved comedic icon is still well remembered by fans and friends and especially resident Paula Stewart, who has just released her new book, Lucy Loved Me, A Memoir.

Stewart, with a career in the theater beginning at 19 that left little time for TV watching, says she didn’t even know who Ball was when she was asked to audition for Wildcat, Ball’s 1960 Broadway debut, following the end of I Love Lucy and her marriage to Desi Arnaz.

Stewart, who had sung in the national tour of Brigadoon and productions of Carousel with Gordon MacRae and Little Me with Donald O’Connor became friends with the star after she offered to help Ball with the show’s songs—Hey Look Me Over being the biggest hit.

“She was really nervous and sounded like a frog,” recalls Stewart. Her proposal elicited a hug and gratitude from Ball and the two became lifelong friends.

“My humor amused Lucy,” says Stewart. “and my antics— like being a pilot—fascinated her. We had a special bond.”

Local Singer To Help Verdi Chorus Celebrate 35th Anniversary With ‘The Force Of Destiny’

The Verdi Chorus will celebrate its 35th anniversary with its Spring 2018 concert “The Force of Destiny” for two performances at 7:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, April 2829 at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Monica.

Founding Artistic Director Anne Marie Ketchum said: “I haven’t done anything from La Forza del Destino (The Force of Destiny) for a long, long time, and it’s loaded with gorgeous music, some of it we haven’t done before that I’ve always wanted to.”

The Chorus will be joined by guest soloists, soprano Shana Blake Hill—“a dear friend and glorious singer,” says Ketchum— mezzo-soprano Karin Mushegain, tenor Alex Boyer and baritone Ben Lowe, who returns to the Chorus by popular demand and who recently made his New York debut in Matthew Aucoin’s opera Crossing.

The Verdi Chorus was founded in 1983 at the Verdi Restaurant in Santa Monica.

When the restaurant closed in 1991, the Chorus continued, and in 1999 incorporated as a nonprofit.

B E V E R LY H I L L S R E A L E S TAT E Bel-Air Association Sues Former President Over Lost Records

By Matt Lopez The Bel-Air Association is taking the legal fight to a former organization president who was ousted in 2016 after years of tumult.

Ron Hudson, the BAA’s ex-president, is being accused – in a complaint filed last week in L.A. Superior Court – of stripping the organization completely bare of its money and records after being voted out of office by members in 2016.

According to the complaint, Hudson – aided by former BAA director Bruce Kuyper, stripped the BAA of its “books and records, money was diverted away from the BAA, and to a pretend-BAA that Hudson helped Kuyper run, and substantial confusion was caused among, and damage done to, the community” upon being ousted by voting members in March 2016.

The complaint alleges that when the BAA’s new Board of Directors were voted into office on March 17, 2016, the organization’s office – which was under the control of Kuyper and Hudson – was “bereft of even the most basic records, except for a small number of materials dating back decades.”

Among those records missing were valuable legal files and research on key real estate issues which the BAA had paid law firm Latham & Watkins to perform.

Not long thereafter, Kuyper and

Hudson filed a series of lawsuits, seeking to annul the March election and have the previous regime reinstated to lead the BAA. One day after the court ordered a BAA directorship election be held in July of 2016, Kuyper dismissed his lawsuit. Hudson wrote a letter to the judge, threatening that any election would “only be the beginning of litigation, not the end of it.”

Kuyper, according to the complaint, tried to hold an unauthorized “BAA” election on Dec. 14, 2016 that was attended by approximately 10 people at most. Because of the low attendance, the meeting was woefully short of the 100 members required for a quorum, and the meeting was called off. Hudson was among those attending and was falsely listed on the makeshift ballot as BAA director.

The complaint alleges Hudson participated in “fraudulent, unlawful, unfair and/or fraudulent business acts, as well as unfair, deceptive, untrue or misleading advertising.”

“Unfortunately, it’s come to this,” one source close to the BAA who wished to remain anonymous said of the lawsuit. “Mr. Hudson is under the delusion that fiduciary means a pasta dish at the Olive Garden.”

The BAA is seeking unspecified damages.

Of course, as residents have learned after dealing with the project over the last several years, what’s on the approved permits can be vastly different from what actually ends up being built. The original not-yet-completed megamansion, which is still standing in Bel-Air, ended up with several underground bedrooms and a theater, as well as an unapproved basement, that did not appear in the original plans.

Still, a 13,990 square foot, two-story home is a far cry from the monstrosity that has loomed over the heads of Bel-Air residents since roughly 2014; a home so large and built outside of legal permits that L.A. City Councilman Paul Koretz called for its demolition last summer.

Neighbors, however, are hardly convinced.

Jordan Ferguson, an attorney for Manatt, which is representing neighbors such as Joseph and Beatriz Horacek in their legal dealings against the property, said he reviewed the plans, calling them “totally inconsistent… a complete mess.”

“Some areas show them removing the attached pool and

pool deck, others show those things staying,” Ferguson told the Courier. “It’s unclear at best what the plans are.”

“They’re trying to remove one the floors of the house, changing that floor into what will now be a huge roof deck with a pool, spa, game lounge, dining area,” Ferguson added. “It’s not really going to be a two-story house.

Properly calculated, we estimate it’s probably still somewhere near 30,000 square feet.”

Construction permits for the site were revoked after an LADBS investigation found that work on the site had been done illegally and outside of permit. Hadid pled no contest last summer to misdemeanor charges stemming from the illegal construction.

In the midst of the new haul route application, appeals regarding soil erosion plans and granting haul routes without CEQA review are tentatively set to be heard by the Los Angeles Building & Safety Commission, as well as the Zoning Commission, in the coming months; possibly in June.

“I’d be surprised if a plan checker didn’t have a substantial issue with these plans,” Ferguson said, adding that “LADBS appears to be bending over backward to find a way to legalize this house.

There is no way this structure can remain standing the way it is.”

The Courier article went to print naming Williams as the proponent who, up until the last minute, would not reveal his participation following the previous week’s letter withdrawing from the Committee for Beverly Hills Residents for Preserving Property Values.

In that letter he wrote: “I am a respected and reputable member of the Los Angeles real estate community, which I have served for more than 15 years…”

He went on to say, “I agreed to serve as principal officer and treasurer… because I believed the Basement Ordinance… is misguided… I decided that resigning from the committee was in the best interests of everyone… I regret any misunderstanding related to my opposition to the Basement Ordinance and look forward to continuing…to work with… the Beverly Hills community in the future.”

Williams’ license, albeit restricted, was issued 10 years ago on Oct. 15, 2007. He will be on a restricted license until 2019. His supervising broker is Hilton & Hyland.

Angering residents On Tuesday, Williams & Williams (Branden and his wife Rayni) heavily promoted one of their latest listings on social media, an evening open house at the $188 million home at 924 Bel Air Road, built by Bruce Makowsky - with a candy room and a helicopter on the roof. The spec home was initially listed at $250 million, but the price is now 25 percent cheaper.

According to Shawn Bayliss, Executive Director of the Bel Air Association, the event was to have had 50-100 people, but he did not know whether the necessary permits were in place, which would include special parking arrangements off site.

Instead, said Bayliss, at one point 800 realtors and guests were on the scene, including Jeff Hyland. Valets were overwhelmed. Real estate agents, without regard for the residents, simply left their vehicles in the street with the keys.

The police were on scene by 6:30 p.m. to shut down the event, though the event was to have lasted until 9 p.m. “Due to the excitement of the Open House we had 1,000 people attend & have been shut down by the cops. See you next time,” Williams wrote on social media.

The Williams’ have not yet apologized to the residents, however, when the 22-foot wide street quickly became impassable for emergency vehicles and residents, who were unable to leave or reach

their homes, blocked by guests’ vehicles awaiting valet services.

“I couldn't get home this afternoon,” wrote one resident.

“The road appeared to be completely blocked… It's very dangerous when traffic on our road is blocked. There are old people with medical conditions who might need an ambulance. A fire could start… I hope someone can reach out to the owners, the Makowsky Brothers, and see that this doesn't keep happening.”

Multiple videos on Facebook show people drinking champagne and socializing, like a party, with a giant outdoor flat screen projecting loud music videos into the canyon.

“What a sad situation we find ourselves in. Waiting in line for realtors so they can get a free drink or two,” wrote another resident.

There is no parking allowed on that stretch of Bel Air Road, precisely because it blocks through traffic both ways and creates unsafe conditions.

“I know a lot of other agents get very jealous because whatever we do, it always goes big,” Williams told The Real Deal on Wednesday in an article about the incident.

The Courier has previously revealed that Williams has a police record, which dates back to a 1993 incident when he was charged with threatening and obscene phone calls, vandalism and possession of tear gas. He withdrew his not guilty plea in exchange for a no contest plea and was convicted of phone threats and possession of tear gas.

According to public records, in subsequent charges of driving under the influence, open containers and public drunkenness, Williams failed to appear in court. His probation was canceled. He was issued bench warrants twice and ordered to complete a drug and alcohol program. He eventually completed the program in the mid-1990s.

Then in 2007, Williams was the subject of a complaint by the Department of Real Estate of the State of California for a false statement he made when he applied for a license, answering “no” to the question, “Have you ever been convicted of any violation of the law?”

The complaint was filed by Deputy Real Estate Commissioner Janice Waddell, who noted that he was convicted of violations of Penal Code sections 653M (a) (obscene/threatening phone calls) and 12403.7 (a)(8) (unlawful use of tear gas weapon).

“The matter alleged … involves moral turpitude and is substantially related to the duties, functions and qualifications of a real estate licensee,” said the complaint.

“Respondent’s failure to reveal

the matter… constitutes the attempt to procure a real estate license by fraud, misrepresentation or deceit, or by making a material misstatement of fact.”

Williams filed a stipulation and waived a hearing, admitting, “that the allegations… filed against me are true and correct,” requesting a restricted real estate license.

The conditions include that the Real Estate Commissioner may “suspend the right to exercise any privileges granted under the restricted license in the event of: (a) The conviction of respondent (including a plea of nolo contendere) to a crime which bears a substantial relationship to the respondent’s fitness or capacity as a real estate licensee; or (b) The receipt of evidence that respondent has violated provisions of the California Real Estate Law, the Subdivided Lands Law, Regulations of the Real Estate Commissioner or conditions attaching to this restricted license.”

Business practices Williams’ business practices were the subject of a serious complaint in 2015, which resulted in Williams returning his entire commission plus additional damages. The incident also sheds light on his relationship with Canadian billionaire developer Francesco Aquilini.

In this complaint, Williams was sued for Breach of Written Contract, Breach of the Implied Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing, Breach of Fiduciary Duty; Negligence, Constructive Fraud; Fraud, and Elder Financial Abuse by the former elderly resident of 9230 Robin Dr., in the “Bird Streets” above the Sunset Strip.

According to the complaint, Mr. and Mrs. Brandon Chase had lived at their home on Robin Drive for 36 years, and at 83 he was suffering from Parkinson’s disease when Williams paid them an unsolicited visit and “said it was an excellent time to consider selling… and that he and his partner (now wife, Rayni Romito) “were the very best agents specializing in the Bird Streets, that they knew all the buyers interested in that area and could find a buyer who would pay top dollar for the Chase home,” according to the complaint. The Chases were not interested.

The complaint says that he returned three weeks later and persisted until finally he succeeded in setting up a meeting with Mr. Chase, again claiming that it was an excellent time to sell, and that he and his partner “knew everything that there was to know about values and sales opportunities in the Bird Streets.”

Having lived in their home 36 years, the couple were not well-versed in real estate, and thus trusted the Williams’.

However, both Mr. and

Mrs. Chase disagreed with the $6.5 million value assigned to their home because a home on their street had just sold for $8.5 million, reads the complaint. The Chase’s believed that because their lot was larger, they had superior privacy and their view was comparable, it was worth more. The Williams’, it turned out, had been the brokers on that sale, and Mr. Chase had learned the buyer was going to tear it down and redevelop the property.

Relationship with Aquilini The other buyer on Robin Drive was Aquilini, who purchased a tear down for a spec home at 9272 Robin Dr. for $8.5 million in September 2012. Williams was the buyer’s agent.

In fact, Aquilini, who lives in Vancouver, apparently voluntarily sat for a deposition in Los Angeles in 2014 at attorney Tuchman’s office in which he described a phone call Williams made to him in August 2012 in which Aquilini vouched for Branden. “So, Branden called me. He said that he was with Mrs. Chase and wanted to confirm that – confirm that I bought the property, Robin Drive, for 8 million 750 [sic] and ‘if you could tell that to Mrs. Chase. And so, he put her on the phone… I said, ‘Yeah, I did buy the property from the 9272 Robin Drive, paid 8 million 750 [sic].’ And Mrs. Chase then said ‘Okay.

Thank you very much.’ I believe she said to me, ‘How was Brandon and Rayni?’ And I said ‘No. They did a very good job for me. I was very happy with—with their services.’”

Williams sold Aquilini houses for a property located at 1100 Bel Air Rd. and at 1184/1193 Loma Linda Dr. within a day of each other in May 2012. Then, Branden sold him 9272 Robin Drive a few months later, in September of 2012. Bel Air Road was sold again by Williams in June 2015 for $34.5 million.

Currently, 9272 Robin Dr. is readying for sale, along with the two homes Aquilini has been trying to build on Loma Linda.

The complaint and testimony from the Chase’s alleged that the Williams’ told them the substantially lower price was because the other property had a superior view. They believed them.

The Chase family signed at $6.5 million and agreed to list off market, not on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS), which they allege was recommended by the Williams’.

Private showings were arranged to “a selected handful of local real estate developers and real estate sales agents,” according to the complaint.

Two offers fell through before a third, for $5.3 million, came in. Chase countered for $6.4 million stipulating they wished to remain in their home for 75 days because they had

April 20, 2018 | Page 13 not planned to sell their home and had nowhere to move.

The buyer countered with $5.5 million, and Williams advised Chase “this was the best offer that Mr. Chase could hope to receive for the Chase home.”

The buyer had learned that the house had a problem with an emergency access that would require the building of a road, and they were urged to drop the price another $100,000 to $5.4 million. The amendment was prepared two weeks prior to the end of the Williams listing agreement. The Chases followed his advice and signed the sales agreement.

Before they had vacated their home, the house had already been resold to another buyer for $7.7 million, according to the complaint, by the same agents who brought the buyer to the Chases, Adi Werthman and Michael LaMontagna. By the time of the $7.7 million sale the pair had moved from Coldwell Banker to Hilton & Hyland, the same firm as Branden Williams and Rayni Romito (now Williams).

Chase sued Hilton & Hyland and Williams and Romito in March 2014. Hilton & Hyland attorney Aviv Tuchman led the defense for Williams.

Williams offered $201,000 to settle the case which was far more than his commission of $137,500 shortly before trial which was set to start in May 2015. Chase, then 85 years old, accepted the offer.

The house last sold in 2015 for $9 million to Lilac Investments, one of the Woodbridge LLCs that are now part of a $2.2 billion bankruptcy. The house is valued on Zillow at $16.8 million today.

When he bought the house in 1976, Chase paid $231,000.

Between Aquilini vouching for Williams with the now 88year-old Chase and testifying for Williams in his defense against Chase’s civil suit, plus supplying Williams with numerous high-value listings, it would appear that the Basement Ordinance flies in the face of his redevelopment model and the relationship he has developed with Aquilini and his development plans in the Los Angeles area.

Currently, the City of Beverly Hills awaits the results of the signature validations for the petition to rescind the Basement Ordinance.

Soon, the City Council will once again address a storm drain issue and a lot line adjustment on Aquilini’s properties at 1184 and 1193 Loma Linda Dr. If the homes are built, rather than preserving property values, the oversized megamansions will most likely drive property values down, leaving them vulnerable to be scooped up by even more developers, say many real estate professionals.

AIM Sets Briefing To Address Youth Mental Health Treatment, Research AIM-Youth Mental Health will hold its AIM For the Cures Los Angeles Insiders’ Briefing from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, May 3 at a private Bel Air residence (address provided with RSVP).

AIM is working to build a movement devoted to the mental health of children, teens, and young adults by raising awareness, improving access to effective treatments and funding research. The nonprofit has funded research at UCLA’s Semel Bradley Peterson Institute including a two-year post-doctorate fellow in pediatric mood disorders.

Quinn Harris took first place in the boys freshman/sophomore 1,600 meter heat in 4:50.33. On the girls side, freshmen Alexa Delatorre and Eujong Chi took first and second place respectively in the girls 1,600m, with Delatorre winning in 6:07.07 and Chi finishing in 6:07.75.

For the boys varsity races, BHHS’ James Masutani earned a personal record of 4:53.91 in

the 1,600. Matt Liner tied for fifth in the boys high jump in 56. Alon Tamir ran the 110m hurdles in 18.02 and the 300m hurdles in 46.18.

Baseball Beverly Hills High’s baseball team has won seven of its last nine games, although its most recent outing was a 13-2 loss against El Segundo in an Ocean League game at La Cienega Park. Before that, BHHS swept a doubleheader against Hawthorne, with a 196 victory and a 10-3 win.

BHHS is 9-5 overall and 21 in the Ocean League and was set to play at El Segundo on

Thursday in an Ocean League game that was not completed before the Courier’s press time.

Boys lacrosse The Beverly Hills High boys lacrosse team is trying to rebound after two straight losses. The Normans lost 12-1 to Hart High of Newhall on April 18 and 12-3 to Calabasas on April 16. Nick Forys scored BHHS' lone goal in the loss to Hart. The last win for BHHS (48) came in an 11-5 win over Downey on April 13. Jason Harward had four goals while Benji Liker, Ethan Gorin and Brian Harward each scored two.

By Matt Lopez Last week, Dodgers star Yasiel Puig visited the youth of the Beverly Hills Little League to spread the message about his Wild Horse Youth Foundation.

This week, Puig took his relationship with Beverly Hills one step further.

Puig announced a change in his career management this week, revealing a new partnership with the Beverly Hills Sports Council.

Puig had previously been represented by the Wasserman agency, which cut ties with the outfielder two months ago.

Agents Dan Horwits and Cesar Suarez will service as Puig’s representatives from the

Beverly Hills Sports Council, per a press release.

Puig, 27, is due for a big contract as he plays out the final season of a seven-year, $42 million deal that he signed with the Dodgers prior to the 2012 season.

The Beverly Hills Sports Council is quickly becoming one of Major League Baseball’s more prominent firms, representing players such as Jason Kipnis, Rougned Odor, Mike Leake, Salvador Perez and Alex Cobb.

Puig is off to a slow start in 2018, but is coming off a career year in 2017 where he hit .263 with 28 home runs and 74 RBIs.

He had a particular affinity for biking, which made him feel free and adventurous and from a young age inspired a never-ending longing to travel. At the age of 14, he spent an entire summer, along with a youth group, riding his 3-speed English Hummer bicycle across the entire United States. He continued his biking even as an adult, sometimes biking as much as 60 miles on one day along with his two sons.

After settling in Beverly Hills, Gene took up sailing. He sailed his boat in the largest international boat race from Newport Beach to Ensenada on two occasions, but was happy just to make it to the finish line. He made numerous other weekend sailing trips

along with his family, his grandchildren, and even taking his dog.

In his later years, Gene immersed himself in genealogy and was able to trace his family back numerous generations, even locating relatives in Russia, Poland and Israel who had survived the Holocaust, most of whom had no knowledge of the existence or survival of other family. As a result of his efforts, the relatives eventually reunited.

Gene is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Suzanne, two sons Dr. Douglas Galen (and wife Jodi) and Dr. Steven Galen (and wife Laurie Saul), six grandchildren (Joshua, Samantha, Rachel, Zachary, Andrew and Alyssa), and sisters Ada Kless Gilbert of Newport Beach and Bernice Scher of New Jersey.

manning the share table), said fourth grade teacher Lindsey Houlberg. “They seem to really have a sense that they are giving back.”

The donated food, culled primarily from the cafeteria-bought lunches at the school, is largely comprised of yogurt, granola bars, fruit and vegetables.

The Courier stopped by the school during one recent lunch period to observe the process in action. Just before the period begins, a parent volunteer chaperones a handful of students who will be manning the share table, which is adjacent to cafeteria station where students purchase their lunches.

Almost immediately after students begin filling the cafeteria and lining up to take the components of the “wellbalanced meal” mandated by the state, a first grade boy deposits a sealed bag of carrots within the appropriate bin on the share table.

“Thank you little man,” Allen says.

A second little boy then puts a box of raisins on the table and runs away after offering a sheepish “thank you” to the throng of students manning the table. A minute later, another little boy picks up the raisins left on the table and adds them, along with some carrots, to the appropriate bin. Then two boys drop off some raisins and a pack of hummus and chips; then a fifth boy

drops off his string cheese, and some carrots, followed closely by a sixth boy who deposits his chocolate pudding on the table. And so it continues, throughout the period, the piles growing.

While kids are able to take food from the share table, few do; and pretty much every child who exits the foodfor-purchase line makes a deposit at the share table.

Allen learned early on that there had to be a few ground rules in order to make the project a success “We want them to eat their lunch,” he said, noting how on the first day they launched many kids would essentially dump their lunch and “go shopping” at the share table. “We want our kids to eat as well. But what we don’t want is for them to throw away their lunch and take from the table.”

While the share table is open to all students to donate, currently only students from the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes man the tables. Before a classroom begins their shift, Allen makes a presentation to the class where he both previews what the donation process looks like as well as walks the students through the process of budgeting a well-balanced meal; something that is unfortunately rather costly.

Fifth grade teacher Elizabeth Lopez extolled the program.

“The kids absolutely love it and they just wanted to sign up right away,” she recounted. “They had tons of questions about what they could do to contribute. It’s really sweet.”

Some 250 guests from all over the area came to the California Club downtown to celebrate with the Luminaires, the founder chapter volunteer support group of the Doheny Eye Institute, at its 43rd annual spring benefit “An Easter Parade.”

The boutique/luncheon raised more than $110,000 to assist the Doheny Eye Institute in its continuing mission to restore, preserve, and improve human eyesight through vision research and a full range of ophthalmic services provided by internationally recognized experts.

The fashion show featured the spring collection of Lourdes Chavez, a L.A.-based world-class designer.

A dedicated committee of Luminaires with vision, energy, and creative genius, combined their talents to orchestrate a festive afternoon. Benefit Chair Betsy Ulf created a decor of Easter bunnies while Luminaires President Liz Shonk kept everything moving in her unique, delightful way. The purpose of the proposal is to enable ProWest Constructors to select the most qualified firm that provides the best value to ProWest Constructors and the Owner and with whom ProWest Constructors will subcontract. Based on the received proposals, ProWest Constructors will create a list of the highest ranking respondents, based on a best value selection criteria and will identify the selected firm(s) to enter negotiations for specific scopes of work to be subcontracted. Formal award of any subcontracts will not occur unless and until the Owner has concurred to the scope of the subcontracted work and to the price of the subcontracted work.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR John Mirisch needs to get a grip. When he was sworn in as vice mayor the other week, he spent the majority of his speech ranting and raving about a development and zoning bill in the State Senate introduced earlier this year that would give Sacramento unprecented power to change municipal zoning laws.

That bill–SB 827–would certainly ravage the City of Beverly Hills by allowing excessive development to an already densely populated city, relative to its size. If it passes, that is. SB 827 hasn’t budged in the legislative process since it was introduced by a San Francisco lawmaker three months ago, and in all likelihood based on the lack of support from others in the legislature, will never make it to the State Senate floor, nevermind the State Assembly or the governor’s desk.

So I’m not sure what’s more troubling: John Mirisch’s prematurely crying that the sky is falling in Beverly Hills, or the lies he’s told to stoke local jingoism.

Mirisch has repeatedly accused Scott Wiener, the senator who introduced the bill, of calling the City of Beverly Hills “racist” for staying true to its current plan. I’m hard pressed to find any indication that Wiener ever called any city “racist” though he had mentioned that limiting development around transit corridors has traditionally excluded minorities, which is true.

Mirisch abuses his platform as an elected official when he spins that into Wiener saying: “Anyone who might like to have a garden is a ‘racist,’“ and that their goal is to destroy Beverly Hills.

The vice mayor, nevertheless, cites “the Twittersphere” as proof that SB 827 supporters think single-family housing is “racist” (as if Twitter is a bastion of intelligent discourse).

Mirisch has alo suggested multiple times that Southern California should secede in protest of various state legislature bills he doesn’t like. But again this particular one is nothing more than an idea by one senator.

With the housing shortage and the proliferation of the homeless crisis, I’m inclined to think that SB 827 was a well-meaning, if poorly thought out, attempt to cut through the red tape that city councils up and down the state have dealt with. After all, the same community activists who bemoan government inability to put a dent in the homeless population can be found wielding pitchforks and torches in protest when city hall propses a shelter in their neighborhood.

While some artists dabble in oils, acrylic or collage, Vice Mayor Mirisch’s long-preferred medium is ill-founded contrarianism. If he does think SoCalexit is the answer, maybe he should pick up a copy of George Orwell’s Animal Farm.

letter and really, to just about every letter he writes, well, I have to ask him where he gets his facts from.

Dr. Nankin has been so far off real numbers and truths that he has to be making them up.

After all, this is a man who once referred to Pierce Brothers’ Westwood Village Memorial Park as a Jewish cemetery. Sir, it is a cemetery of all faiths.

In his last letter, he wrote about the continuous need for SROs inside of our schools and I agree with that. These are scary times for students. However, it is silly to suggest putting police in our parks. We already have park rangers and do not want Beverly Hills to look like a police state. We don't need to go that far.

Dr. Nankin is always asking the City for money in letters which are based on nonsense.

I wonder what his motives really are?

George Vreeland Hill ****** Today, the Beverly Hills Education Association (BHEA), representing approximately 300 credentialed educators, will meet yet again with the Beverly Hills Unified School District to negotiate potential changes to the terms of our members' employment contract. Today, by virtue of the district's continued intransigence, we will meet in the presence of a state-appointed mediator. To be clear, the district unilaterally filed for impasse, and this action triggered the appointment of a mediator.

Unfortunately, BHEA has lost nearly all confidence in the BHUSD. We do not believe the district accurately publicizes its financial condition. We believe the district exaggerates negative financial news and this distorts its true financial condition, which is much healthier than it has led the community to believe.

BHUSD has disseminated demonstrably false information to the public related to our contract negotiations to try to fool the community.

Furthermore, when one starts comparing the district's financial data with those of other Los Angeles County unified school districts, the district's claims of an impending insolvency simply do not match the cold, hard facts...facts that come straight from the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

For example, both Culver City and Alhambra have raised teacher salaries by a greater percentage than Beverly Hills over the last three years.

Both Culver City and Alhambra contribute thousands of dollars more per employee annually toward health benefits. Yet, Culver City and Alhambra receive thousands of dollars less in revenue per student each year compared to Beverly Hills.

Do not believe the BHUSD if it tells you it's running out of money. Quite the contrary. It has more money than it knows what to do with.
