Acadia National Park Acadia National Park falls in the top ten list of most visited national parks in the United States, welcoming more than three million travelers every year. Planning a trip to this very popular park is sure to be worth your time. Be prepared ahead of your arrival and be sure to have a park entrance pass and separate vehicle reservation for the Cadillac Summit Road. Check nps.gov/acadia before you arrive and when you arrive, visit the Hulls Cove Visitor Center to speak with park rangers about your trip. What we now know as Acadia National Park has been the ancestral homeland of the Wabanaki people since time immemorial. Later, European colonists and settlers worked these woodlands and waters. Starting in the mid-19th century, wealthy summer residents, landscape architects and engineers, and skilled local craftsmen began formalizing extensive trail and carriage road networks and advocating for protection of this special place from development. In 1916, Woodrow Wilson established the park that now preserves more than 49,000 acres including the vast historic trail and carriage road network. The park encompasses nearly half of Mount Desert Island, many smaller islands, and a portion of the Schoodic Peninsula. Today’s visitors inherit the special responsibility of caring for this heritage landscape while enjoying all that Acadia has to offer. If you’re an early riser, drive, bike, or walk to watch the sunrise along Acadia’s beautiful rocky shoreline on Ocean Drive. From October to May, you’ll be among the first in the United States to see the dawning of a new day. Later enjoy dinner or simply stop in for popovers and strawberry jam at the famous Jordan Pond House, a delightful restaurant founded in the early 1870s. Motorists who drive the Park Loop Road enjoy a 27-mile ride along oceanside cliffs and mountain forests, stopping at scenic turnouts and notable attractions along the way, such as the mighty Thunder Hole and Sand Beach. The trip is a must. One of the most amazing features of Acadia National Park is the interlaced system of historic hiking trails and carriage roads. With varied lengths and levels of difficulty, the 125 miles of trails appeal to everyone from casual walkers to seasoned triathletes. Hike, bike, snowshoe, cross country ski – or go by horse-drawn carriage.

2022 Visitors’ Guide

With Acadia’s popularity June - October, plan ahead to avoid traffic congestion and long waits. Consider visiting popular attractions in the early morning or late afternoons or take the fare-free* Island Explorer bus (late June - mid October) instead of driving. FEES & PASSES Everyone (16 years old and above) needs an entrance pass to visit Acadia. You can use either a National Park/Federal Lands pass (including Senior, Access, Annual, and more) or an Acadia-specific pass. To purchase your pass, go to recreation.gov, visit an official Acadia National Park location, or stop by the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce visitor center when you arrive. In addition to your entrance pass, vehicle reservations are also required for Cadillac Summit Road from mid-May to mid-October. Reservations can be made at recreation.gov. Vehicle reservations are not required for visitors who enter the Cadillac Summit area by foot, bike, or taxi.

Island Beacons

The legacy of working waters and waterfronts still shine their light on Acadia National Park. Many lighthouses dot the area’s island settings from Blue Hill Bay to Frenchman Bay signaling with flashing lights and fog blasts to keep boaters safe in foul weather. Two of them, the Mount Desert Rock Light and the Great Duck Island Light, are owned by the College of the Atlantic, where students study whales and nesting seabirds. The other four are Baker Island, Bear Island Light, Burnt Coat Harbor, and Egg Rock Light. Some of these great old lighthouses can be viewed and photographed on boat tours that reveal their incredible histories.

Mount Desert Island-area Lighthouses BASS HARBOR A single lighthouse stands on Mount Desert Island: Bass Harbor Head Light. Located at the southwestern section of Acadia National Park in Bass Harbor, the light guards the southern entrance of Blue Hill Bay and warns against Bass Harbor Bar. The light is still fully operational, signaling an occulting red four seconds—three red flashes, one second of darkness. Built in 1858, the lighthouse sits high atop a rugged granite shoreline, making it one of the most scenic views in New England. Visitors may tour the grounds at Bass Harbor Head, but not the lighthouse itself. The lighthouse is extremely congested from May to October and visitors should plan accordingly. 18 18

This picturesque and historic village is home to more than 50 unique shops and boutiques. Located off Peabody Drive (Route 3) in Northeast Harbor, the Asticou garden offers a constantly changing tableau of Japanese iris, sweet azaleas, smoke bush, rosebay, rhododendron and in spring, cherry trees. In high summer the ponds gush with colorful water lilies. The garden is open during daylight hours between May 1 and October 31. gardenpreserve.org Created by Charles Savage, beginning in the early 1950s, the Thuya garden is accessed via a spectacular pair of handcarved cedar gates. The garden is open to the public from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., beginning late May through midOctober. The lodge, a former summer resident’s rustic home, is named for the island’s abundant stands of northern white cedar (Thuya occidentalis) and contains a wonderful library of botany-related titles. It is open late June through September. Parking limited. Pets prohibited. 207-276-3727

Lobster Trivia Did you know that... • Over 5 million lobsters are eaten in Bar Harbor each year. • About 90 % of the nation’s lobster supply is caught off the coast of Maine. • The lobster has an average life span of 50 years. • Maine has more than 5,000 licensed lobstermen and women. • A female lobster lays anywhere from several thousand to 100,000 eggs at a time, but only one-tenth of one percent of those eggs will develop and live past six weeks in the larva stage.

THE THIRSTY WHALE TAVERN thirstywhaletavern.com 40 Cottage Street 207-288-9335 thirstywhalebarharbor@gmail.com Eat with the locals & enjoy the charming pub atmosphere. The menu features our famous fish sandwich, homemade chowders, fresh lobster rolls, seafood, grass fed burgers, and more! Great portions and even better prices. Local & regionally brewed craft beers. Families welcome. ADA compliant. Open 11 a.m.–1 a.m. year round. Serving lunch & dinner daily.  

• The largest known lobster caught in Maine measured 36 inches from the rostrum (back) to the end of the tail. One of the largest known ever caught is a 42-pound, 7-ounce monster on display (dead and mounted) at the Museum of Science in Boston. • An adult male lobster will grow a new shell and shed its old one about once a year; females once every two years, increasing an average of 1/2 inch and 1/3 pound with each molt. During its early growth stages, a lobster is believed to shed some 25 times over five to seven years.

How To Eat HOW TO EAT A MAINE LOBSTER A Maine Lobster According to staff at the Bar Harbor Catering Company

There's a lot of juice in the claw and it's delicious. Drink up, and make sure to pull the pincers apart to make it easier to enjoy this briny cocktail.

Twist claw off at the body.

Break off legs at the body and suck meat out.

Flip the body over and break off in sections. There's lots of little morsels of meat hiding in here.

Pull the meat apart down the middle and look for the translucent white and black vein (digestive tract). Remove this.

Twist tail off at the body and pull off tail fins. There's meat in these fins; not a lot, but still worth the work. Then, push the meat in the tail up with your thumb until it pops out the other side of the shell. You may notice roe (small red immature eggs) or tomalley (green substance that is the digestive gland). These are both edible (and some consider a delicacy!).
