Welcome
Dear Visitors, It all starts with a visit… That’s what I tell people about Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island. Whether you’ve never been here or you’ve lived here all your life. There’s something magical about Bar Harbor. Just one visit and, like me, you’ll be hooked, and counting down the days until you can return. Do you know what the smell of evergreens mixed with the salty ocean smells like? Have you ever been the first person to see the sunrise in the United States? Do you know what it feels like to see the Milky Way in all its glory, where it feels like you’re close enough to reach out and touch the stars? In just one visit to Bar Harbor, you could answer yes to these questions and more. Located on Mount Desert Island, the gateway to Acadia National Park, we have a rich history and a culture unlike any other place. The natural beauty that surrounds Bar Harbor is punctuated with ocean cliffs and rocky beaches, glacier-formed lakes and valleys, unobstructed mountain vistas, and lush forest. Mount Desert Island also has a thriving year-round population and business community. The towns’ residents are employed in a wide range of professions, from multi-generational lobstermen, boat builders, and artists to scientists, entrepreneurs, and academics. These friendly folks will make sure you feel right at home. No matter what time of year you decide to make the trip, Bar Harbor will most certainly put on a show. Be prepared to have your breath taken away atop Cadillac Mountain looking out at the Atlantic Ocean. Make sure you enjoy some (or a lot) of the locally caught lobster. Don’t forget to bring home a memento from your time spent here. Always tell your friends and family about the magic that is in the air here in Bar Harbor. And remember, it all starts with a visit...

Get to Know
Acadia National Park Acadia National Park falls in the top ten list of most visited national parks in the United States, welcoming more than three million travelers every year. Established by Woodrow Wilson in 1916 with 6,000 acres, Acadia now covers more than 49,000 acres thanks to the remarkable dedication and philanthropy of wealthy private citizens such as Charles W. Eliot, George B. Dorr, and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The park encompasses nearly half of Mount Desert Island, a scattering of smaller islands, and a portion of the Schoodic Peninsula. Early risers can drive, bike, or walk to watch the sunrise along Acadia’s beautiful rocky shoreline on Ocean Drive. They’ll be among the first in the United States to see the dawning of a new day. Later they can enjoy dinner or simply stop in for popovers and strawberry jam at the famous Jordan Pond House, a delightful restaurant founded in the early 1870s.

With Acadia’s popularity June - October, plan ahead to avoid traffic congestion and long waits. Hike, bike, or walk to popular attractions in the early morning or late afternoons or take the fare-free* Island Explorer bus (late June - mid October) instead of driving. Motorists who drive the Park Loop Road enjoy a 27-mile ride along oceanside cliffs and through mountain forests, stopping at scenic turnouts and notable attractions along the way, such as the mighty Thunder Hole and Sand Beach. The trip is a must. One of the most amazing features of Acadia National Park is the interlaced system of hiking trails and carriage roads. With varied lengths and levels of difficulty, the 125 miles of trails appeal to everyone from casual walkers to seasoned triathletes. Hike, bike, snowshoe, cross country ski – or go by horse-drawn carriage. You’ll love your visit to Acadia, and you’ll want to come again to enjoy every amazing season. Photo by Heather Anderson

Island Beacons A single lighthouse stands on Mount Desert Island: Bass Harbor Head Light. Located at the southwestern reach of Acadia National Park in Bass Harbor, the light guards the southern entrance of Blue Hill Bay and warns against Bass Harbor Bar. The light is still fully operational, signaling an occulting red four seconds—three red flashes, one second of darkness. Built in 1858, the lighthouse sits high atop a rugged granite shoreline, making it one of the most scenic views in New England. Today, the U.S. Coast Guard mans the station, which is listed on the National Historic Register. Visitors may tour the grounds at Bass Harbor Head, but not the lighthouse itself. Six other nearby lighthouses with island settings from Blue Hill Bay to Frenchman Bay signal with flashing lights and fog blasts to keep boaters safe in foul weather. Two of them—the Mount Desert Rock Light and the Great Duck Island Light—are owned by the College of the Atlantic, where students study whales and nesting seabirds. The other four are Baker Island, Bear Island Light, Burnt Coat Harbor, and Egg Rock Light. Some of these great old lighthouses can be viewed and photographed on boat tours that reveal their incredible histories.

Keep Bar Harbor Green
Ecotourism & Green Initiatives in Bar Harbor The first national conference on ecotourism was held in Bar Harbor in 2005, starting a movement that would inspire a lifestyle. With Acadia National Park as its crown jewel, the region continues to employ a strategy of responsible tourism that will protect Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island’s natural beauty and resources for future generations. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce has assisted in these efforts by placing recycle bins around town and annually awarding area businesses that promote ecotourism with their “Environmental Leader” designation. Local hotels and restaurants that use renewable energy, serve locally produced food, and act in other environmentally friendly ways are recognized by the state of Maine’s “Green Business Certification.” Local nonprofit A Climate to Thrive (ACTT) was named the 2019 “Environmental Leader” business of the year. Formed in 2016, this passionate group of volunteers united around the goal of energy independence for Mount Desert Island by the year 2030. In 2019, ACTT helped MDI High School install a rooftop solar array to provide 100% of the electrical demand for the high school. ASTICOU AND THUYA GARDENS Operated by the Mount Desert Island Land and Garden Preserve, the Asticou and Thuya gardens in Northeast Harbor are some of the most contemplative and sublime landscapes in the eastern U.S. Both can also be accessed via hiking trails. Located off Peabody Drive (Route 3) in Northeast Harbor, the Asticou garden offers a constantly changing tableau of Japanese iris, sweet azaleas, smoke bush, rosebay, rhododendron and in spring, cherry trees. In high summer the ponds gush with colorful water lilies.

Lobster Trivia Did you know that... • Over 5 million lobsters are eaten in Bar Harbor each year. • About 90 % of the nation’s lobster supply is caught off the coast of Maine. • The lobster has an average life span of 50 years. • Maine has more than 5,000 licensed lobstermen. • A female lobster lays anywhere from several thousand to 100,000 eggs at a time, but only one-tenth of one percent of those eggs will develop and live past six weeks in the larva stage. • It takes a lobster four to seven years to grow to be one pound in weight. • The largest known lobster caught in Maine measured 36 inches from the rostrum (back) to the end of the tail. One of the largest known ever caught is a 42-pound, 7-ounce monster on display (dead and mounted) at the Museum of Science in Boston.
THE THIRSTY WHALE TAVERN thirstywhaletavern.com 40 Cottage Street 207-288-9335 thirstywhale@roadrunner.com Eat with the locals & enjoy the charming pub atmosphere. The menu features our famous fish sandwich, homemade chowders, fresh lobster rolls, seafood, grass fed burgers, and more! Great portions and even better prices. Local & regionally brewed craft beers. Families welcome. ADA compliant. Open 11 a.m.–1 a.m. year round. Serving lunch & dinner daily.
• A lobster can drop a claw as a defense mechanism and grow another over a period of years. • An adult male lobster will grow a new shell and shed its old one about once a year; females once every two years, increasing an average of 1/2 inch and 1/3 pound with each molt. During its early growth stages, a lobster is believed to shed some 25 times over five to seven years. • Lobsters are red only after they are cooked. Most are dark greenish yellow when caught. Among the most rare specimens are blue, yellow, and bi-color lobsters. • After a molt, a lobster’s shell takes about eight weeks to harden. • Maine coastal waters have yielded as many as 100 million pounds of lobsters annually.

How To Eat HOW TO EAT A MAINE LOBSTER A Maine Lobster According to staff at the Bar Harbor Catering Company
There's a lot of juice in the claw and it's delicious. Drink up, and make sure to pull the pincers apart to make it easier to enjoy this briny cocktail.
Twist claw off at the body.
Break off legs at the body and suck meat out.
Flip the body over and break off in sections. There's lots of little morsels of meat hiding in here.
Pull the meat apart down the middle and look for the translucent white and black vein (digestive tract). Remove this.
Twist tail off at the body and pull off tail fins. There's meat in these fins; not a lot, but still worth the work. Then, push the meat in the tail up with your thumb until it pops out the other side of the shell. You may notice roe (small red immature eggs) or tomalley (green substance that is the digestive gland). These are both edible (and some consider a delicacy!).
