Looking for adventure? How about rock climbing? You can enjoy hiking or biking 45 miles of carriage roads and over 125 miles of trails. If you’re looking for something a little less taxing, try our popular lobster and sunset boat cruises, sail boat tours, or deep sea fishing. After a day of exploring and adventuring you can find numerous restaurants to satisfy every appetite. In Bar Harbor you can enjoy cocktails by the water, a Downeast dinner on the pier, a lobster roll to-go, or fine dining at one of our various establishments. There are also shops to explore, art galleries and museums, wine tastings, and unique hands-on art workshops. Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island also have lodging to accommodate all different styles. 100 Years & Counting... Acadia National Park falls in the top ten list of most visited parks in the United States, welcoming more than two million travelers every year. Established by Woodrow Wilson in 1916 with 6,000 acres, Acadia now covers more than 49,000 acres thanks to the remarkable dedication and philanthropy of wealthy private citizens such as Charles W. Eliot, George B. Dorr, and John D. Rockefeller, Jr. The park encompasses nearly half of Mount Desert Island, a scattering of smaller islands, and the Schoodic Peninsula. The only national park in the Northeast, Acadia is big on attractions. Early risers can drive, bike, or hike up Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the East Coast, to watch the sunrise. Theyâ€™ll be the first in the United States to see the dawning of a new day. Later they can stop in for popovers and strawberry jam at the famous Jordan Pond House, a delightful restaurant founded in the early 1870s.

Island Beacons A single lighthouse stands on Mount Desert Island: Bass Harbor Head Light. Located at the southwestern reach of Acadia National Park in Bass Harbor, the light guards the southern entrance of Blue Hill Bay and warns against Bass Harbor Bar. The light is still fully operational, signaling an occulting red four seconds—three red flashes, one second of darkness. Built in 1858, the lighthouse sits high atop a rugged granite shoreline, making it one of the most scenic views in New England. Today, the U.S. Coast Guard mans the station, which is listed on the National Historic Register. Visitors may tour the grounds at Bass Harbor Head, but not the lighthouse itself. Six other nearby lighthouses with island settings from Blue Hill Bay to Frenchman Bay signal with flashing lights and fog blasts to keep boaters safe in foul weather. Two of them—the Mount Desert Rock Light and the Great Duck Island Light—are owned by the College of the Atlantic, where students study whales and nesting seabirds. The other four are Baker Island, Bear Island Light, Burnt Coat Harbor, and Egg Rock Light. Some of these great old lighthouses can be viewed and photographed on boat tours that reveal their incredible histories.

Ecotourism & Green Initiatives in Bar Harbor The first national conference on ecotourism was held in Bar Harbor in 2005, starting a movement that would inspire a lifestyle. With the 100th anniversary of Acadia National Park and the National Park Service last year, the region is looking ahead to the next century with a strategy for responsible tourism to protect Bar Harbor’s natural beauty and resources for future generations. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce has assisted in these efforts by placing recycle bins around town and annually awarding area businesses that promote ecotourism with their “Environmental Leader” designation. Local hotels and restaurants that use renewable energy, serve locally produced food, and act the state’s “Green Business Certification.”

Aracataca was Márquez’ inspiration for the mythical town of Macondo and continues to manifest the famed realismo magico.

Museums, Gardens & Preserves While Acadia National Park with its tens of thousands of acres is certainly the major attraction on Mount Desert Island, there are numerous other natural and historic areas to explore. The hands of some of the most talented landscape architects in the nation’s history have left their imprint on MDI. Likewise, people of talent and drive have worked hard to preserve the island’s rich cultural and historic heritage. ABBE MUSEUM The Abbe Museum shares the history and culture of Maine’s Native people, collectively known as the Wabanaki (Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Micmac, and Maliseet), and operates from two locations in Bar Harbor. At their downtown location, visitors find dynamic exhibitions and activities interspersed with spaces for quiet reflection. At the Abbe’s historic trailside museum at Sieur de Monts Spring, guests can experience early 20th century archaeological discoveries informed by 21st century science. The downtown Abbe Museum serves guests year-round, while the Sieur de Monts Spring location is open seasonally from mid-May to mid-October. Admission includes both locations. • A female lobster lays anywhere from several thousand to 100,000 eggs at a time, but only one-tenth of one percent of those eggs will develop and live past six weeks in the larva stage. • It takes a lobster four to seven years to grow to be one pound in weight. • The largest known lobster caught in Maine measured 36 inches from the rostrum (back) to the end of the tail. One of the largest known ever caught is a 42-pound, 7-ounce monster on display (dead and mounted) at the Museum of Science in Boston. • A lobster can be right or left-handed. Some have the large crusher on the left, others on the right. • A lobster can drop a claw as a defense mechanism and grow another over a period of years. • An adult male lobster will grow a new shell and shed its old one about once a year; females once every two years, increasing an average of 1/2 inch and 1/3 pound with each molt. During its early growth stages, a lobster is believed to shed some 25 times over five to seven years. • Lobsters are red only after they are cooked. Most are dark greenish yellow when caught. Among the most rare specimens are blue, yellow, and bi-color lobsters. • After a molt, a lobster’s shell takes about eight weeks to harden. • Maine coastal waters have yielded as many as 100 million pounds of lobsters annually.

TREMONT This town’s name is derived from the three distinctive summits of Western Mountain visible from most areas of the community. The town’s 1,600 or so inhabitants reside in the burgs of Bass Harbor and Bernard on the harbor itself, and further north along MDI’s western shore in the villages of West Tremont, and Seal Cove. The tiny, seasonal village on Gotts Island is also part of Tremont. For many years each village had its own post office and fire department, even though they were only a few miles apart. Bass Harbor proper, with its scores of lobster boats and fish wharfs, is an authentic Down East experience. In the early 1900s, Bass Harbor was named McKinley on maps, quite by accident. When villagers asked federal officials for a post office in Bass Harbor the request was granted. They were then asked what name it should have. Perhaps giddy with success, one member of the local delegation reportedly responded with the offhand remark “Name it after the president for all we care.” Officials took
