INTRODUCTION

Carriage Workshops were a part of ‘Eveleigh Railway Complex’ and had mastered the engineering and production of steam engines. Owing to changing technology, the mid twentieth century saw the last production of Steam engines. However, the workshop sustained till 1989 for heavy machinery works. The site is historically significant for its contribution to the ‘Steam Era’ in Sydney and development of the neighboring suburbs. Thus, an adaptive reuse project was initiated in 2004.

‘VISUAL ARGUMENT’: The tales of past and present precede the future

The story board aims to super impose the stories of the past and the present over each other to apprehend the relationship of ‘new’ and ‘old’. 1

Present Over Past

(Carriageworks)

Aide memoire: The Carriageworks sites echoes the bygone era and has left behind enormous spaces which now accommodate professional and emerging artists

(WideScenes, Helen Woodford)

Configuration: The graffiti, harmful lead and unstable construction members posed challenges to the new project. Also the need to fulfill the collective idea‘romanticism of ruins’ was likely felt. 2

Present Over Past

(University of Sydney, 2020)

As much as necessary: The building fabric is retained appreciating its patina and memory. Necessary repairs and conservation works included maintenance of roof, walls and windows. Replacement of services and authentic reconstruction of highly significant elements based on evidence.

(Bay 25, Zan Wimberly)

Sustainability: Parts of the historic fabric that were removed have been relocated and reused. Creation of multi-purpose spaces. The adaptive reuse includes upgrades which are in compliance with the Building Code of Australia. 3

Past over Present

(Through Vin's Lens 2018)

Newness: New spaces inserted comprise of free standing, rectilinear, concrete containers. These containers are placed parallel to existing structural grid and are acoustically treated as a requirement for theatre performances

(Through Vin's Lens 2018)

Material: The original materials (brick, stone, steel trusses) are retained, also refurbished wherever necessary. The use of exposed concrete not only compliments the old but also fulfills the structural and functional requirements. 4

Past over Present

(University of Sydney, 2020)

Traces of past: The retention of Original fabric, historic machinery (including overhead cranes and line shafting), painted signs and patina, indicate the building’s former use and story.

(Through Vin's Lens 2018)

Industrial architecture: The entire site and built heritage is a representation of the industrial era. All diffident elements work in tandem to talk about it’s railway past. 5

Past over Present

(Eat drink play, Zan Wimberley)

Light and shadow: The careful location of reconstructed skylights, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow, enhancing the spatial quality.

(Eat drink play, Zan Wimberley)

Mood color: A smart use of tinted glass reflects colorful light in the interiors. A well representation of the creative precinct. 6

THE SMELL OF SUCCESS

The story board proves the visual argument that the past and present resonate together to fulfill the demands of the future.
