I
f there’s one thing this time of quarantine has taught me, it’s to be more appreciative for family, friends, and all of the things that make everyday life so beautiful— and, frankly, just to appreciate what makes things run smoothly. I bet one thing we have all missed are the businesses and services who we had come to rely on. Now that we are transitioning into the next phase of our new normal, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the small business owners who work hard for our communities. As they open their doors for business, they need our support now more than ever. In this special issue of Bham Family,

When people arrive at their facility, they will be asked questions recommended by the CDC. Their temperature will be taken, and if it’s above 100.4, they will not be allowed to enter — whether it’s an athlete or staff. They will spray athletes’ and staff members’ shoes to disinfect them, and they must wash their hands when entering and exiting the gym. No bags will be allowed in the gym with an athlete. Both staff members and
athletes may only bring in a warmer bottle, hand sanitizer, and keys. All items must be placed on a specified area of the floor and be cleaned after use. Only athletes and staff are allowed in the gym, and the number in at a time will be limited. They are using touch-free entrances and exits, and they are wiping down all of the common areas and high-touch areas every two hours. Each athlete will use only his or her mat, and the mats will be disinfected after each use. They will spray disinfectant on their carpet foam every session, and they are using outdoor check-in stations as weather allows. Ace of Birmingham will be open Monday through Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

They are using a virtual waiting room process at all of their offices. Prior to appointment time, patients will be asked to use the mobile check-in process and answer the COVID-19 screening questions. When they arrive at the office, they should call the front desk and notify them that they are there. The team will then call or text the patient when a room is available for them, which keeps them from having to sit in a waiting room, helping to limit any exposure. Each person who enters the building will be required to wear a mask and have his or her temperature checked to ensure he or she doesn’t have a fever. RED SEA EXPANDS TO OFFER CAJUN MENU As we are trying to navigate our “new normal,” many restaurants are going to continue with curbside pickup as opposed to dine-in service. Back in March, I told you about Red Sea Ethiopian Mediterranean Restaurant in Joy Homewood. Now they have King expanded their menu to offer Cajun cuisine. The former chef of Boateng’s Cajun Creation in Bessemer is now serving up all of his favorites at Red Sea, such as crab claws, fried green tomatoes, lobster bisque, gumbo and po’ boys. Platters and family size orders are also available. All of the seafood comes fried or grilled, depending on your preference. Although I like grilled seafood, I’m a girl from the south who loves that comfort food, so a delicious fried platter is the way I roll! For all the vegans, don’t think that the Ethiopian
side of the menu has been discontinued. They still have all of your favorite flavorful veggies such as green beans, chickpeas, and—my favorite—beets. I’m not sure how they make their beets, but they have a sweet and tender taste that’s not overly earthy. If my mom could have prepared beets like this when I was a kid, I would have eaten them all my life. Let’s continue to be good citizens and support the local restaurants, whether it’s curbside or dine-in and follow whatever safety protocols they’ve set in place. JUST FOR DADS My friends and I made up a gang called the Rotor Rooters when I was in fifth grade. We wore black shirts, slicked our hair back, and climbed into local sewers to be initiated. This was a stupid and smelly gang, but we were plenty Ward proud of ourselves for our bravery Williams and knew that only a few could make it into our gang. My friends and I continually made up different clubs, gangs, and make-believe organizations that had a test or rite of passage as part of the initiation. Rites of passage have been around in every known society marking social, cultural, religious, and lifecycle changes. Some cultures have very distinctive rites including quests, initiations, battles, psychological tests, eating weird food, saying prayers, chanting rituals, and countless rites that are unique to that culture. Every family should develop their own unique rituals, part of what makes your family special. We have a blessing book in our house in which we celebrate important events, including holidays,
birthdays, and religious celebrations. Rituals help kids realize that something has been accomplished. My family celebrates accomplishments with Dairy Queen treats just as my wife did when she was a child. With this pandemic, there have been lots of rituals postponed, cancelled, or celebrated in a different way. Just because this has happened, doesn’t mean it can’t be celebrated in your own way. What memories will you make during this time? How will your time during this pandemic be remembered? During this time, our family has established a ritual of a nightly long family walk where we have talked to each other more than we have in a long time. We are promising to continue this even when things get back to normal. As my son goes through a modified rite of passage of high school graduation, I pray he is ready for this transition and that he is deeply connected to his family with fond memories of the steps he has taken. My prayer is that you and your family are finding comfort in the new rituals that you may have established over these past months. They also ask that families bring just one adult with the child who needs to purchase items from the store. The store will offer hand sanitizer to be used upon entering the store, and they are selling masks that fit children and adults. Applause Dancewear is also offering online ordering and curbside pickup. Currently, they are open Monday through Thursday from 12 to 6 p.m., Friday 12 to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bumpus debate team takes league honors The Bumpus Middle School debate team won the Birmingham Area Debate League championship this school year, finishing 8 victories higher than the second-place team. They won 31 debate rounds in total and finished with the highest percentage of wins among all middle school teams. Among individual debaters, Surabhi Nevrekar was the #1 debater in the league; Raghavan Madabushi was the #3 debater in the league; and Rayaan Damani was the #9 debater in the league.

For the health and safety of employees and guests, the complex will routinely wash down all flat surfaces. They will also pressure wash and disinfect the dugouts, bleachers, and other such areas. There will be additional cleanings of all of the bathrooms, both during and between events. Guests will find sanitation stations located throughout the complex, including at all of the concession stands. There will also be signage in all of the restrooms regarding best practices for hand washing and sanitizing. A limited number of spectators will be allowed in the complex. All Hoover Met Complex food services staff are required to wear gloves, and event staff members are required to wear masks. For upcoming appointments, patients will receive a COVID-19 questionnaire via text or email. When they arrive at the office, they will need to call to let the staff know, and an assistant or hygienist will come out to greet them. They will take a quick temperature and bring them in. Patients will need to use the office’s hand sanitizer, or their own, before entering. If a co-pay is required, staff will take that before treatment to decrease traffic in the reception area because they are required to keep
the waiting area clear of people, reading materials, etc. Therefore, they ask that patients come to the appointment alone. The only exception to this is for children or someone with a caregiver. The McWane Science Center is following the CDC and Health Department guidelines (for the state and county), along with other information they have received from professional organizations and other museums in the United States and Europe.

At this time, they are included in one of the state’s later phases of business reopenings, so they will remain closed until that criteria and stage is reached. In the past, the Painted Personalities team would have children sit in their chair as they painted over their eyes, nose and mouth. The artists followed the best practices for face painting that were available at the time. However, they are now evaluating different options for the safety and health of their clients, children, and artists to provide the safest service. The owner says she will take additional classes in safety and sanitation that are designed specifically for her industry. With that knowledge, she will be able to develop a procedure that will allow them and their customers to enjoy the beautiful transformations they create.

Customers are not allowed to wait inside the salon unless they are with a child or a parent receiving a haircut. All of their customers must also wash or sanitize their hands immediately after they enter the salon. Their stylists will keep families 6 feet away from other families in the salon. The stylists will wear face masks and gloves, except when they are cutting hair. If customers are experiencing any

Patients can either complete their registration via their cell phone or manual paperwork, instead of patient check-in tablets. Health. That includes all of the door handles, bathroom faucets and tank handles, tables, napkin dispensers, and guest-touch surfaces. They check their staff ’s health as they get to work, and they wash their hands with soap and water before each guest. The shop has spread out and reduced their indoor seating, and they’ve also spread out their outdoor seating. The theatre’s summer camps will start July 6 with reduced class sizes and a no-visitor policy. When their theatre and camp begin operating, they will disinfect all of the frequently touched surfaces regularly. Their staff will also adhere to the local laws for PPE.

JACOB GLIDEWELL, 17 BY JEANA DURST How many 17-year-olds do you know who have a deep understanding of fractional calculus? Since the 9th grade, Jacob Glidewell has been assisting with physics and math research at UAB and recently completed his senior research project with Dr. Nkashama, interim chair of the math department at UAB. “I always liked math and science from a young age, and in fourth grade I had a really good teacher—Ms. Hancock—who got me into doing competitive math at Clay Elementary,” says Jacob, now a graduating senior from the Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA). Jacob’s senior research project, titled, “An Investigation into Fractional Calculus and Its Applications,” landed him a spot at the Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair. Jacob explains further: in calculus, mathematicians study of rates of change; in fractional calculus “we generalize those operations so we can get much more information out of them and they are a lot easier in modeling.” He began his senior project with Dr. Nkashama doing a lot of reading (just consider that this field of study has been practiced since the 1700s). “It was really nice to work under someone who has been doing math research for so long … not just learning how to do math research but learning how the math worked itself,” Jacob remarks. From May 2019 to January 2020, he worked on his senior research project. “I would go in and present the proof I had been working on that past week, and Dr. Nkashama would provoke questions to guide me along the way to fixing my proofs …. by the end of the meetings we would have a fullly fleshed out proof.” In fact, Jacob spent four weeks working out only one theorem. “I proved an existence theorem with what I call a causality function that allows us to have a concrete understanding of why fractional calculus models better,” he says. The implications of this work related to modeling are far-reaching and particularly relevant to the times we are living in—the WHO and CDC are now using fractional calculus models to get better data about the spread of the coronavirus than they can get from traditional exponential growth models. Though Jacob clearly has a natural gift for 30 Bham Family June 2020
mathematics, the reason he shines bright extends beyond his talents—as his father Shane points out, he has always put in the work too. “He has the gift, but he puts 110% effort into it.” And Jacob is quick to appreciate the influence of his teachers. “There’s a lot of extra freedom that ASFA gives their students, and ASFA has some phenomenal teachers there,” he says, adding that he always felt so encouraged to pursue his passions there. This fall Jacob will attend The University of Alabama on full scholarship to study mathematics and physics and plans on pursing a doctorate after that, following in the footsteps of his UAB professor mentors. Shane says, “He wants to do he knows what he wants, and he’s doing everything he can to get it.”
