Well, we made it — summer is officially here! What is your best summer memory? One of my family’s traditions growing up was a summer trip to Jekyll Island, GA. Summer also meant hours on end exploring in the wilderness near my house, and of course, Vacation Bible School at my church. In middle school, I took up golf, and my local course was free for “junior members” if you walked, and I put in a lot of miles in June and July walking the course.

lose your eyes and point north. Are you pointing north? And if you think you are pointing north, how do you know? This is a group exercise I do on a regular basis while teaching responsible fatherhood classes at an area correctional facility. The responses I get WARD from the class participants to WILLIAMS pointing north are all over the place. The men in this program point up, point forward, point backwards, but very seldom do they point true north.

I know what way true north is when I do this exercise, because I use a compass. When it comes to guidance on being a good father, advice comes in all different forms and varieties. It is often contradictory and not helpful to my personal circumstances. There is no compass that tells me I am fathering in the right direction.

Being a “Dance Dad” is a role I know I get correct. The job is to pay, drive and clap. I have a t-shirt that that tells me these rules. The rules are the same as a band dad, except you must accept being yelled at by band moms when you do something

One of my favorite books is Bad Dads of the Bible, which looks at mistakes that men in the Bible, such as David, Jacob, Sampson’s dad and others, made. Dads — even good ones — have made mistakes from the beginning of time. Involved, responsible and committed fathers have a clear view of where they are leading their children, learn from their mistakes, and help other fathers along the journey.

TRADITIONAL DAY CAMP ($160, 12pm-4pm) If you’re in need of regular full day care this summer, each week we offer Traditional Day Camp for Kindergarten through 6th grade that includes a lunch, weekly themes, trips to the pool (1st-6th grade), outdoor play time, activities and exciting, creative projects. This year we are offering afternoon sessions ($160). They will be divided according to age (some groups may combine if numbers are low). Traditional Day Camp is offered every week. It can be paired with a morning Enrichment camp to make a full day of camp.
