Q: What are the University’s official colors?

A: Brunt Orange and Seal Brown FYI: Leon Winslow and his colleagues at the University recommended these colors to the Board of Trustees in 1914. Winslow first admired this color scheme on a trolley ride to Toledo. He sat behind a woman wearing a large hat adorned with orange and brown feathers.

Get Acquainted With University Spirit Groups Freddie And Frieda, Sic Sic Encourage School Spirit

FREDDIE AND FRIEDA Walking around campus or while attending athletic events, students may notice two largerthan life mascots.

For decades, Freddie and Frieda have roamed campus fostering school spirit among the University community. Whether silently, but lively, waving hello or posing in memorable friendly photos, these two mascot birds have arguably become the University’s most recognizable figures.

The story of these two feathered icons begins with Freddie.

Conceived by members of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity, Freddie served as the first mascot to create school spirit at University athletic events. On Jan. 16, 1950, Bob Taylor debuted as the first Freddie at the BGSU vs. Ohio University basketball game.

Almost 20 years later, Freddie’s feathered friend Frieda appeared. Frieda joined Freddie for the first time in Feb. 1966 as Mrs. Freddie Falcon.

However, Frieda did not become an official mascot until 1980. It was then that Frieda became Freddie’s little sister and sidekick. Sue Sheard dressed up as the first Frieda during the 1980-1981 school year.

As a University tradition, Freddie and Frieda are “beheaded” at the end of each basketball and hockey seasons. During this time, the true identities of the persons playing the mascots are revealed. Then, two successors for the following school year are chosen each spring semester.

Through the years, Freddie and Frieda have slightly changed in character and sometimes dramatically in costume design. Despite some subtle changes, these two animated falcons continue generating school spirit worthy of fan interaction.

SIC SIC Students may notice a small group wearing masks and overalls around campus.

Students may not need to be alarmed.

Freddie and Frieda Falcons Represent Rich Longstanding History of School Spirit!

F

Freddie and Frieda Falcon are unarguably an enormous part of the culture at Bowling Green State University. From being prominent icons at sporting events, to showing up randomly at classes and other activities, these Falcons spread school spirit wherever they go, making them a great representation of the spirit and traditions of BGSU. The nickname Falcons, was adopted by the University in 1927 when Ivan “Doc” Lake, a distinguished alumni and active athletics booster of the University, suggested that the school’s current nickname “The Normals” needed a replacement. His recommendation of the Falcons was quickly adopted.

Freddie Falcon wasn’t introduced, however, until January 1950 during a basketball game against Ohio University. Freddie didn’t have a partnerin-crime until February 1966, when Mrs. Freddie Falcon was introduced. Originally, both mascots were portrayed by males. In 1980, Sue Sheard became the first female to portray Frieda Falcon, the rebranded name of the female mascot.

As evident in Nelson’s response and in the actions of the current mascots, it takes lots of school spirit and passion for the University for a person to be devoted with time and energy to excel at being one of the birds. This causes the process to find a new Freddie or Frieda to be very rigorous and start the year before assuming the role.

“The application process starts in the spring after Freddie and Frieda are revealed. It is a secret process, so all I can really say is that it is an online application,” said Tyler Strom, the head spirit coach. However, in the process, each evaluator looks for certain characteristics.

“I look at students who are able to time manage, are involved on campus and who love BGSU. They don’t do it for the position, they do it for the University and its students,” said Strom.

Becoming Freddie and Frieda is an amazing feat, but even more so is the commitment in being the mascot once picked.

“Freddie and Frieda are the face of BGSU. When you think of BG, you associate Freddie and Frieda. Not just for athletics, but for the community and students at BGSU. Tyler Strom HEAD SPIRIT COACH tired, so you can never be tired,” said Spencer Lockwood, a former Freddie Falcon.

“Freddie and Frieda go to over 200 events throughout the school year. And with all this pride and energy from the mascots, it’s no wonder that people think of Freddie and Frieda when they think of Bowling Green State University.

“Freddie and Frieda are the face of BGSU. When you think of BG, you associate Freddie and Frieda. Not just for athletics, but for the community and students at BGSU. Their love for the University is so genuine that students who come into contact with them have no option but to love them and their University,” Strom said. n

10 under 10: BG Alum Leo Almeida Honored for a Career Focused on Serving Others

F

rom serving as Undergraduate Student Government President and 2009 Homecoming King to now working at the Community Refugee and Immigration Services and The Nature Conservancy, Leo Almeida has charted a life of impacting the lives of many people. For his service and accomplishments, the University is recognizing Almeida as one of its 10 Under 10 alumnus at this year’s Homecoming.

“I feel very humbled to be on the list because I know what type of people that graduate from BG and I know we have alumni doing amazing things throughout the world,” Almeida said. “So to be one of the 10 on this list is very exciting.”

The 10 Under 10 alumni recognition program was created to honor Falcon alumni who are changing lives in their respective spheres of influence. Almeida has done much to be a positive influence on the lives of those around him since graduating from the University in 2010. His influence is exercised to a variety of places through the Community Refugee and Immigration Services in Columbus.

Almeida is the President of the Board of Trustees for the Community Refugee and Immigration Services. This organization helps refugees and immigrants settle in the Central Ohio area, while providing resources to make their transition to life in the United States easier. Some of these resources include preparatory classes for the citizenship exam, health and wellness programs, legal services and assistance raising children in a new environment. His motivation to volunteer at this organization stems from his own personal experience in becoming a citizen.

“When I was applying for citizenship, I felt very alone. I was navigating the process all on my own,” Almeida said. “I wanted to be engaged with this group because they help people navigate the immigration process, whether they are someone who has been here several years and they want to become a citizen or are a refugee.”

Almeida earned his citizenship while working on his undergrad at the University.

He was also involved in Undergraduate Student Government, the President’s Leadership Academy and the fraternity Alpha Tau Omega during his time on campus.

“One of the big things I learned was how to communicate with people in a really strategic way,” Almeida said, when asked what the most important lesson was he learned at the University. “The work that I do is very political in nature, and so sometimes I’m talking to people I completely agree with and sometimes it’s people I don’t agree with, but I need them to listen to what I have to say about issues I’m advocating for. “ The work Almeida does is political in nature indeed, as he has spent his entire career working with government and policy.

Right after graduation from BGSU, Almeida worked with the Ohio Legislative Service Commission as a LSC Fellow. As a fellow, he worked with senators, various committees and state agencies on policy changes in Ohio. Almeida was also assigned to work on special projects, such as the state’s budget.

Following his time at the Legislative Service Commission, Almeida worked as the manager for Lieutenant Governor candidate Sharen Neuhardt’s campaign. He was responsible for managing many aspects of the campaign, such as scheduling events, contacting donors, supervising interns and volunteers, and assisting Neuhardt.

Consequently, Almeida worked for the Ohio Senate in three positions: Administrative Assistant to Democratic Leader Capri Cafaro, Legislative Aide for Democratic Leader Eric Kearney and Senior Legislative Aide for Senator Cecil Thomas. In these jobs, Almeida worked on resolving a variety of constituent issues, preparing and distributing correspondences and assisting each senator with their daily activities.

Currently, Almeida works for the Nature Conservancy in Ohio as the Climate and Energy Policy Associate.

He is in charge of developing strategies to broaden support in Ohio for The Nature Conservancy’s climate and energy priorities, monitoring legislative, regulatory and administrative action on policy pertaining to climate and energy and conducting research to represent The Nature Conservancy to constituencies and stakeholders. He has been recognized by the Mid-West Energy News for his work at the Nature Conservancy through their 40 Under 40 List.

Leo Almeida will be returning to the University this Homecoming weekend to receive recognition for all his achievements. n

Homecoming Weekend Highlights Parade, Taste of BG, Tailgating and the Game!

By Kari Toncre Public Relations Intern A parade, football game, and lots of school spirit makes for a perfect Homecoming weekend.

The Homecoming Committee has been working hard since March to put together a variety of events that all BGSU students and alumni can enjoy and participate in. These events were created and executed by the student-run committee.

The weekend will kick off with the annual Homecoming Parade beginning at 5:30 on Friday.

The new parade route starts on Alumni Drive, travels down Wooster Street, and ends on Thurstin Avenue.

A variety of organizations and departments will be in the parade. Greek Life, Residence Life, and other organizations will be riding on floats that they made themselves at the float building party that took place on Thursday.

The goal of the committee was to reflect the Homecoming theme, Falcon Forever, in every aspect of Homecoming.

“With our theme this year, we are really focusing on no matter where you go you will forever be part of the Falcon community,” Major Events Chair Alli Kulbago said. “It’s a celebration of all Falcons. Past, present, and future.”

The BG Council President, Board of Trustees, and the Homecoming Court will be in trollies.

President Rogers, Graduate Student Senate, and Undergraduate Student Government will be riding in convertibles.

Fans are encouraged to bring food donations as there will be several food donation boxes around the stadium.

“We are working with the Center for Civic Community Engagement,” Homecoming Director Megan Pettit said. “The food will be going towards the Brown Bag food project which is looking to reduce and eliminate food insecurity for Wood County.”

Homecoming allows for students and alumni to give back to the community as well as getting involved and learning about what the community of BGSU and Bowling Green has to offer.

“Homecoming is all about coming together to celebrate our amazing university and what it means to be a Falcon,” Kulbago said. n

Cris Shale among Returning Alumni at Homecoming

By Kari Toncre PUBLIC RELATIONS INTERN Former football player and BG alumni Cris Shale ’91 is heading back to BGSU during Homecoming this month to visit the campus and meet up with some old friends, former teammates, and coaches.

Shale recalls his four years at BGSU as memorable and an amazing experience.

Beginning his college education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Shale found Bowling Green State University as a better fit for his major, sport management and administration, and transferred in 1987.

“I was in contact with Dr. Janet Parks from the College of Education and Allied Professions at BGSU prior to transferring. She eventually became a professor of mine and really helped me figure out what to do and how to balance it with football,” Shale said.

Shale’s college football career began with him walking onto the team in his first year at BGSU. In 1988, Shale earned his spot as the punter on the football team and received a scholarship to continue to play after outkicking everyone at a spring game during his first year.

“I had a great set of guys who were on the punt team who allowed me to put up the statistical numbers I was able to accomplish,” Shale said.

By his senior year, Shale was the best punter in the nation.

After graduating in 1991, Shale was drafted in the tenth round of the 1991 NFL Draft to the Washington Redskins, but was unfortunately cut later in the year. The New York Jets picked up Shale in 1996, but was released before the season began.

A couple years later in 1996, Shale was honored with an induction into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

In 2011, Shale was part of the “Cast of Honor”, along with 12 former BGSU athletes. They were honored with the retirements of their numbers in their athletic venue.

“Looking back to my college career, I felt like I was just having fun,” Shale said. “Being a part of the Cast of Honor and having my number posted in the north end zone of the football field is pretty cool and a great moment for my kids and for them to see what I accomplished.”

Shale established four Mid-American Conference records and earned a spot on five All-America teams. Eighteen BGSU football players have been Shale’s eldest child, Courtney, graduated able to earn a spot on a variety of All-America from BGSU last year. She majored in business teams. HOMECOMING 2018 – KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH– BOWLING GREEN FALCONS

RB Andrew Clair Sophomore running back Andrew Clair spent much of his freshman season at BG proving his worth as one of the most versatile dual-threat runners in the country. The St. Louis native put up 1,184 all-purpose yards, 4.5 yards after contact and 107.6 all-purpose yards per game, placing hm fifth among true freshmen nationally.

He also set a school record averaging 6.8 yards per carry and was a ThirdTeam All MAC selection.

Clair has taken over as the Falcons starting running back this year, and while he hasn’t put up record breaking numbers like last season, he has continued to prove he is a versatile offensive playmaker and a centerpiece of Bowling Green’s offense. In last week’s Battle of I-75, Clair set season highs in rushing yards (118), receiving

yards (74) and touchdowns (3). He is one of only four players in the country with at least 400 yards rushing and 15 receptions this season, and ranks sixth in the MAC with 409 rushing yards.

While it has been a down season for the Falcons, senior wide receiver Scott Miller has put together a start to his senior season that will cement his name in Bowling Green’s history. In the season opener against Oregon, Miller caught a career high 13 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns. After recording 10 receptions for 117 yards against Georgia Tech, Miller became the seventeenth player in Bowling Green history to record over 2,000 career receiving yards. He has put up a MAC leading 6.8 receptions per game and is third in the conference with 86.8 receiving yards per game.

After a 75 yard day last week against Toledo, Miller now has 2,153 receiving yards in his career. He also recorded his eighteenth career receiving touchdown in that game, tied for ninth most in program history. The senior has been a model of consistency throughout his

He quickly immersed himself in the community he fell in love with. He represented his peers as the vice-president of the student body, joined the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity, played on the tennis team, and got involved in the Key Yearbook, which became Key Magazine in 2008. He was even voted the most photogenic in his class.

Small-town and University Appeal has Never Faded For BG Alum Jeff Witjas

The usual path to becoming a Hollywood talent agent is usually not being a political science major at the University.

But for 1968 alumni Jeff Witjas, that’s how his career started out. And for nearly 41 years he has been a talent agent in Beverly Hills, Calif, represneting some of show businesses major stars, among others Betty White.

Usually dressed in a black business suit, a bright-red tie, and a look of determination, Jeff works as the senior vice president of the Agency for the Performing Arts (APA) representing over 40 clients including Betty White, Jason Momoa, Jason Beghe and Smokey Robinson.

Little did he know back during his time as a student that the connections he made, his

experience at Bowling Green, and “the totality of the classes I took would be a good foundation of what I do today.”

Bowling Green State University welcomed Jeff to campus in 1964. Just under 10,000 students were enrolled that year and the University was in the midst of growing from a college sized institution of about 5,000 students to what would eventually be more than 16,000, according to University archives. Jeff remembers, “the campus was terrific. It always was very intimate, and always had a warm feeling to it.” This was a completely different dynamic from his hometown of New Rochelle, N.Y., about 20 miles from New York City.

He recalls the desire to find a slower placed environment to go school after high school graduation.

“Everybody is rushing around, and I don’t think they consider the feelings of people as much,”

Jeff was also the first president of the Undergraduate Alumni Association, which was created by Jim Hof: the man who turned out to be Jeff’s mentor during his college experience.

Jeff Witjas and daughter, Rachel Witjas, a first year Falcon he said. “I wanted to get a change from big city life; I wanted to try a small-town life.”

Jeff’s cousin attended Bowling Green State University around the time he started looking at colleges and he liked what he saw in Bowling Green. “At Bowling Green, I didn’t find people to be selfish. They really want to help each other, and that’s not easy to find,” he said.

Jeff remembers having a great college life at Bowling Green. Even though he didn’t have any specific goals in mind as a student, he said he “wound up achieving an awful lot starting to grow as a young adult: becoming a leader on campus, making friends for life, and learning who I was as a person with my strengths and weaknesses.”

“Jim was a major reason why I was successful at Bowling Green.” Jeff said, “he was always there for me. Whenever I had an issue, he would guide me through it. He always had a great spirit. All my years at Bowling Green, I never saw him mad. He always inspired me to think positively no matter how difficult something was.”

The two still keep in touch today. Jeff said, “I always make it my business to call him at least once a year. Even when I talk to him on the phone, he always has the same voice and attitude.”

Several years after graduating from Bowling Green in 1968, Jeff attended Western State College of Law in Irvine, California to earn his law degree. While there, he met a group of CONTINUED ON PAGE 23

Local Entrepreneur Partners with BG Athletics to give Fans Stadium Salsa

By Joseph el-sharnouby Public Relations Intern If you find yourself enjoying the salsa sold at the football stadium Saturday afternoon, you can thank local entrepreneur Greg Shepard for his handiwork. Marketed commercially as Stadium Salsa, but with the unique distribution rights to all Falcon sports venues, Stadium Salsa was an idea that grew from the kitchen of Greg and Heather Shepard.

With recipes ranging from Mild, Medium, Hot, Mexicali, Holy Toledo XX Hot and Pineapple Habanero (winner of the People’s Choice Toledo Salsa Contest Winner), Stadium Salsa has any salsa-lovers tastes covered.

Greg and his wife Heather began their journey of creating a healthy snack alternative in their kitchen 12 years ago. It started as a hobby of experimenting by trying to make different batches of salsa for themselves. After finding a batch that they liked, they decided to bring it to University football games, where people were amazed with the taste of the salsa.

The popularity of their salsa with friends and family encouraged Greg to begin experimenting with some logo designs for their jars. The packaging came in handy when an acquaintance introduced him to a representative of the Toledo Mudhens, who loved the salsa as well, and eventually invited them to become the exclusive salsa provider for the team. This launched the journey of perfecting multiple recipes to scientific

Greg says creating the salsa brand was a hobby gone wild, but in reality it also satisfied a long-existing desire.

or 2008 BG graduate Preston Ramsey, Homecoming weekend is something he looks forward to all year long. No, it’s not because of Campus Polleyes famous breadsticks or the thought of hearing Ay Ziggy Zoomba in person once again. But it’s the thought of picking up an instrument and playing with his fellow alumni band members that gets him excited to wear brown and orange.

“If I wasn’t marching in the band or in class I was hanging out with band people. If it wasn’t for [the Falcon Marching] band I wouldn’t have a lot of the friendships I do now,” said Ramsey.

“Playing in the alumni band is the best part of homecoming,” said Ramsey.

“It takes up most of my weekend.”

A: “I picked the dance program, not UDA or the dance team, but the actual academic program because it is one of my majors. I’m super passionate about dance. I’ve been dancing since I was two and a half. But with the program here, I’ve been able to do so many cool things: I performed for Eva Marie Saint, I’ve been able to go to dance conferences each year meeting dance professionals, and I’ve actually danced professionally. My professor has her own company and I got to be a dancer with her, which was super rewarding. So opportunities like that, that I’ve been rewarded. I want future students who are interested in dance or performing arts to have the same that I was able too. And I just want to pay it forward, pave the way, but it’s also important to continue foster and cultivate the performing arts here at BG. We have a great theatre program, college of music, all those different art aspects.

It’s important to keep contributing to those and giving students the opportunity to go to events.”

Q: Why did you want to be on homecoming royalty?

A: “Looking back on my time at BGSU, the absence of the individuals I have met because of this University would have made my time here much less fulfilling. Each person has helped me see the value in deep friendships and strong communities, both within the university and outside of it. I interviewed to be on homecoming court for the chance to tell those with close ties to BGSU about people, places and programs that have positively affected my undergraduate experience. My friends, classmates, professors and mentors have witnessed every triumph and challenge I have encountered over the last three and a half years.

Sharing their stories along with my own is an absolute honor.”

A: “I have been head-over-heels for BGSU ever since my first visit on a rainy November day in 2013, so the opportunity to represent the institution that has given the term”home” a deeper meaning is a great honor. I am thrilled and humbled to be a part of the 2018 Homecoming Court because I have looked up to the past Court members and Royalty every year. I saw them as examples of a well-rounded and devoted BGSU students whose strong values aligned with those of our University. It means the world to me that my nominator, who is still unknown to me, saw these traits reflected in me. Always an advocate for Bowling Green State University, when his adopted daughter, Rachel, came into his life 18 years ago and began to mature, he often encouraged her to consider Bowling Green. “I thought Bowling Green would be a great climate for my daughter to grow up in as a young woman,” Jeff said.

Although initially opposed to the idea, Rachel ended up visiting BGSU and fell in love with the campus, saying BG “instantly went from the bottom of my list to the top.”

She’s also found the community of Bowling Green is “overall warmer and friendlier. I’m really liking Ohio and I don’t think I want to go back to LA.”

Her dad hopes in her future that she will “be able to surf life in such a way to embrace it, be happy in it, and always keep her sense of humor.”

So with a daughter now enrolled, her father will have more reasons to visit the University, although over the years, he has been a regular visitor and classroom speaker.

Lesa Lockford, chair of the Theater and Film department, said, “He comes back periodically, and kindly gives his time to speak with students about what it means to work in professions in Los Angeles.” Jeff has also offered himself as a point of contact to graduates.

“He is incredibly generous, has a great sense of humor, and wants to do whatever he can to help people,” Lockford said.

And regarding Jeff Witjas’ daughter being a legacy student, 50 years after he graduated, Lockford is also happy for the added incentive for him to visit the campus more often.
