While students at the University still woke up for classes Tuesday, student teachers from the University celebrated a snow day. Many student teachers spent the day adjusting lesson plans for upcoming observations by professors. “The bonus is that it allows you to catch up on your stuff,” said senior Emily Clark, a student teacher at Riley Elementary in Fostoria. “You’ve just got to be flexible with it. It’s not too big of a deal.” Clark was supposed to be observed by a professor in her second-grade class for the first time Wednesday. Some observations, such as Clark’s, will be rescheduled because of school closures and delays. “I think we are pretty prepared for days like this,” said Sue Houston, associate dean of academic affairs in the college of education. “We can reschedule observations.” Sixty school districts closed in Northwest Ohio, nine of them in Wood County, including Bowling Green area schools, according to The Toledo Blade.
“It’s a lot to take what we put into a normal class and adjust it...”
Beth Nostrant | Student teacher Although snow days will affect observations, two-hour delays can make it harder for student teachers to adjust lesson plans, said Beth Nostrant, senior and student teacher for Perrysburg High School. On two-hour-delay days, the Spanish classes Nostrant teaches are shortened from 50 to 30 minutes. “It’s really pushing it,” Nostrant said. “It’s a lot to take what we put into a normal class and adjust it to the time change.” Regardless of the number of snow days or delays a school district declares, student teachers are not kept from graduating if the school district they teach in makes up missed days. “The basic work that needs to be done will still continue,” Houston said. “There is always an attempt to make sure what is missed still gets covered by student teachers.”
