A daily independent student press serving the campus and surrounding community ‘CENTENNIAL MEMORIES’ CHRONICLES TIME SPENT AT THE UNIVERSITY By Christie Kerner Reporter

tudents, faculty, events, hair trends and dorm life are just a small picture of what can be found in the Centennial Memories archive. The University’s library staffs have been working to put together photographs and stories from the past to celebrate the University’s Centennial and are now looking to current students for their experiences and photos. “We hope that current students will add photos because we want to use the site to help document the centennial as it unfolds,” said Dana Nemeth, library associate in the center for archival collections. The library had many photos already digitized due to Jerome Library’s 40th anniversary but has since added more content to the site. Coordinator of Library Info and Tech Services Gwen Evans stumbled across free software known as Omeka designed for museums, libraries, and archives. “Anybody can upload an image, video or audio file and become part of the permanent archive,” Evans said. The site also features specific exhibits which focus on a particular topic such as service projects through the years. “We wanted to see how service has been a part of the University,” Nemeth said. The project has been cooperating with the Office of Service Learning and has since created its own archival history on the topic of service throughout the years at the University. Student organizations, alumni and faculty can talk to those involved with the Centennial Memories project and create an exhibit of their own to provide a history of their specific group or topic. “It’s so simple to use,” Nemeth said. “An organization can

Faculty deliver letter to begin unionization process Carol Cartwright

By Hannah Nusser Reporter

The BGSU-Faculty Association announced to University administration their intent to form a labor union. Supporters of the FA stood outside McFall Center yesterday morning adorning posters in support of the FA. FA President David Jackson, flanked by fellow officers, delivered a letter to President Carol Cartwright’s office yesterday morning stating the faculty group had filed a petition in favor of a union with the State Employment Relations Board. Although Cartwright was unavailable, Jackson said delivering the letter was a significant step in the process. “But it’s just a step,” he said. Cartwright sent out an email to faculty and staff yesterday afternoon with the official administration statement regarding unionization. “We do not support the organizing effort,” she wrote. “We believe

it would fundamentally alter the faculty culture of BGSU and do nothing to accomplish the strategic goals that the BGSU community has established for itself. However, we respect the faculty’s right to pursue this action and look forward to the conversation leading up to an election.” Almost 58 percent of University faculty signed 469 petition cards in support of a vote for a union. “Some people are opposed to it, some people are for it ... but there’s no doubt that an overwhelming majority of faculty want to have an election,” Jackson said. At a press conference following the trip to the president’s office,

Black Issues Conference held tomorrow

BRIEF

University chooses construction company for master plan Capstone Development Corp. will be the developer of the new University residence halls and the dining facilities, slated to be completed by fall 2011. The Board of Directors of Centennial Falcon Properties, Inc. voted Wednesday to approve the company. The directors included University President Carol Cartwright, Vice President for Finance and Administration Sheri Stoll and University Provost Ken Borland. “We went through a pretty elaborate process,” Stoll said. “Capstone was the unanimous choice.” Capstone is a nonprofit and has had projects in residence halls at other schools across the country, such as Marshall and Arizona State University. “We’re still very much in the design aspect,” said Dave Kielmeyer, senior director of communications. “[But] this is a world-class company. I think in 2011 we’ll have student housing that rivals anywhere else in the country.”

The 11th Annual Black Issues Conference is putting black issues under the microscope. Tomorrow’s scheduled programs will focus on the crisis in urban America, behavioral reinforcements on stereotypes, drop out rates and planning for the future. Admission to the event is $5 for students and $10 for faculty, staff and non-University students. The conference will be from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Union. The programs will lead into a discussion by this year’s keynote speaker, Paula Ribeau, the wife of former University President Sydney Ribeau. Mu’ Id Ghani, co-chair for the conference committee, said students are lucky to have her as the
