The impact of music and film upon the African community was one of the main topics discussed at this month’s popular culture colloquium series. “Hip-hop and rap is the now of black popular culture,” said Angela Nelson, head of the Department of Popular Culture and this month’s presenter. Nelson discussed in her speech, “Mapping The Study of Back Popular Culture,” various issues that have impacted the black

community — but what she really wanted people to take away from her presentation is what is being done about black popular culture. “Black popular culture is a broad and varied subject in America, but it extends beyond our borders,” Nelson said. “We have to ask, what has been done over the years and
what have college professors and other professionals been doing about it?” Nelson addressed a crowd of approximately 20 students, faculty and staff in the Pallister Conference Room in the Jerome Library. Students who attended the presentation felt that it was well done. “It was a very well spoken, intellectual and informative presentation,” said John Matney, sophomore. Matney enjoyed Nelson’s presentation; however, he felt that it was lacking in some areas.
“I wish that she [Nelson] would have touched and elaborated on how some whites still perceive blacks as inferior,” Matney said. The Popular Culture department started their popular culture colloquium series at the beginning of the 2006 semester and will continue it through the 2007 academic year. Various faculty, instructors and graduate students from the Department of Popular Culture have and will speak on various topics within the popular culture field. “The idea of a popular culture

colloquium is beneficial to the BGSU community because the University is known for its department of popular culture,” said Sarah Gothie, a former graduate student of BGSU. “This gives the entire campus community yet another opportunity to be exposed to popular culture as an academic subject.” The series continues on March 15, when Chuck Coletta will discuss the impact of Superman on popular culture and on April 12, Tim Hufnagle will talk about the Dark Rides. Both events will take place in the Union, room 318.

ROCK ON: Sophomore Ian Hanson, 21, rocks out to the popular game Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero is a game in which you have a guitar controller hooked up to the system that allows you to play along to hit songs by pushing the different buttons and actually strumming. It gives players the feeling playing a real guitar. This has been the new college craze.
Should the United States introduce another $1 coin?
Traveling to Europe for spring break is expensive, partying like a European at the Union is free. The German Club and Russian Club are teaming up to bring the first eurodance to the Black Swamp Pub tonight from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. “I’m looking forward to all of the different organizations and people being there and having a great time,” said Yelena Yershova, treasurer of the Russian Club. The eurodance will include free food and drinks while supplies last, and of course, banging European style dance music. In years past German Club has hosted “Fasching” in February, which celebrates Mardi Gras in German tradition. “It will be cool to see if this becomes an annual event,” Yershova said. In some ways eurodance is comparable to Mardi Gras, said Rachel Walker, president of the Russian Club and treasurer of the German Club. “Fasching and eurodance are both celebrations,” Walker said. And what would a celebration be without music? “Everyone who has favorite European music was asked to send it in, so there will be all kinds of good dance music,” Yershova said. The event will take place and the Pub will stay open past midnight, thanks to the Falcons After Dark Programming Fund, which allows clubs and organizations to apply for grant money for events held in the Union after midnight, said Walker. “All of the officers and Mary Edgington, director of the Union, have been fantastic with everything,” Walker said. The planning began when the clubs applied for the Falcons After Dark Programming Fund in September, and watching the dream come into reality has been a learning experience. “The transition from idea to reality has been the hardest part. I want to thank everyone who helped,” Walker said.

Rocking all night long to fight cancer By Kyle Reynolds Reporter
The Eppler Center will be “rocking” and rolling to fight cancer tonight. Alpha Tau Omega is holding their first annual Rock-A-Thon in the Eppler South Gymnasium to raise money for the American Cancer Society. During the event people will rock in rocking chairs from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. Each team consists of three people and the team must keep its chair rocking the whole time. Only one team member must be rocking
at any one time. The cost to enter a team is $15, but people can buy tickets at the door for $5 or buy tickets in advance for $3. Upon entering, each person will be given a raffle ticket. “We will be raffling off things ranging from autographed professional sports merchandise to free games of bowling, with many other things as well,” said Eric Young, Alpha Tau Omega Social Service Chair. “People can also buy extra raffle tickets at the event.” Several bands will be playing throughout the night including
Plague the City, The Fight Within, Premonition, Eight Minutes Upside Down and As of Yet. Comedy will also be provided by Josh Benner, Craig Flack and Joe Lucchese. Additionally, many games and tournaments will be a part of the Rock-A-Thon. “There will also be other events going on, including a punch pong tournament, corn hole, relay races, Madden and Halo tournaments, guitar hero and much more for people to do while not rocking,” Young said.

Ohio couple sentenced to 2 years in prison for child endangerment By Thomas J. Sheeran The Associated Press
NORWALK, Ohio — A couple convicted of child endangering for forcing some of their 11 adopted, special-needs children to sleep in cages each were sentenced Wednesday to two years in prison. Huron County Common Pleas Judge Earl McGimpsey gave Michael and Sharen Gravelle sentences ranging from six months to two years on four felonies and seven misdemeanor charges, but
ordered the prison time be served concurrently. They faced one to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000 for each felony count. That meant the Gravelles could have gotten a maximum sentence of 20 years each. None of the charges carried mandatory jail time. The Gravelles have said they will appeal their convictions. The judge allowed them to remain free on bond pending the appeal.
