Learning community explores how to use video game design in classrooms to entice students By Eric Lagatta Reporter

Video games might usually be considered a mindless distraction from schoolwork, but one learning community at the University believes the exact opposite. The one-year-old learning community, called “applying principles of video game design to improve student learning,” aims to do just that: use the philosophies of video games to better the classroom experience. The learning community, which has 10 members, features faculty members, as well as undergraduate and graduate students. Tim Brackenbury, associate professor in communication sciences and disorders, started the learning community with his co-facilitator, John Folkins, professor in communication sciences and disorders. “I’ve been involved with efforts to innovate teaching for years and years and this has a huge amount of potential,” Folkins said. Folkins said that since so many people play video games, many people will identify with the learning community. The community spent the first year looking at video games

and their design and how those are related to student learning, Brackenbury said. During its biweekly meetings, the community looks at books, articles and videos about video games and applies these sources to the issues that members bring up, he said. Members can discuss things that aren’t working in their classes that they want to change. Brackenbury said that there is a fundamental question the community is addressing. “What is it about video games that is so enticing and can we learn things from them that make our classrooms more enticing?” he said. Members of the learning community believe games have real values that can be applied to the classroom to enhance students’ education, Brackenbury said. The design of video games can influence the way an instructor designs a course. Like classes, video games aren’t easy, Brackenbury said. “They’re really frustrating at times, but you keep trying,” he

Students looking forward to renting DVDs from the Union’s new DVD rental kiosk will have to stay tuned for its installation. The DVD rental kiosk from company ROC-U was set to be installed in the Union Sept. 5, but has yet to arrive. “They [ROC-U] have run into trouble with their supplier,” said Gale Swanka, senior associate director of the Union. Swanka declined to give a new projected installation date due to uncertainty of when it will arrive. The kiosk’s location is still expected to be near to the information desk in the Union, said Katie Post, auxiliary affairs chair for Undergraduate Student Government. As reported in an article printed in The BG News article Aug. 31, the Ohio-based company’s name, ROC-U, stands for Rent on Colleges and Universities. ROC-U has DVD kiosks installed on area campuses such as John Carroll University, University of Akron, Case Western University, Baldwin-Wallace College and Wayne State University.

Twice as many students CULTURAL DANCE visit Learning Commons Tutoring center increases exposure on campus, success By Dominic Binkley Reporter

The Learning Commons tutored twice as many students so far this semester than it did last fall. In its second year at the Jerome Library, the Learning Commons has tutored 820 students in the first three weeks of the semester compared to 403 students at the beginning of this past school year, said Mark Nelson, director of the Learning Commons. Nelson attributes the increase to the promotion done throughout the past few semesters. “I think it’s all the exposure and the marketing we’ve done on campus,” he said. Staff and graduate assistants from the Learning Commons visited classes during the first few weeks of the semester to spread the word about the Learning Commons, he said. Andrea Dinderman, a freshman

who uses the Learning Commons for statistics tutoring, said she first heard about the Learning Commons from a graduate assistant visiting her class. She now goes once a week. During the summer, presentations were given to new students and their parents to promote the Learning Commons. The Student Orientation, Advising and Registration program also held its advising sessions for new students in the Learning Commons, Nelson said. “The advising was conducted in the Learning Commons this summer so a lot of the students got familiar with where it was and what it looked like,” said Sally Dreier, study skills coordinator for the Learning Commons. Dreier said she has seen a definite increase in the use of the Learning Commons so far this
