The vice president of student affairs will begin his commute to Washington D.C. as the first person to become a senior fellow at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, an organization that consists of 13,000 members on campuses across the nation. He has been involved with NASPA for thirty years in his higher education career.

Casey Anthony acquitted of daughter’s murder The six week murder trial of Casey Anthony ended yesterday with the 25-year-old’s acquittal for the murder of her daughter, Caylee Anthony.

Anthony was convicted of four counts of lying to investigators about the disappearance of her nearly 3-year-old daughter in June 2008.

Caylee was reported missing July 15, 2008, according to CBSNews.com. Her body was found five months later in the woods near her home, according to The Associated Press.

Once reported missing, Anthony alleged that Caylee’s nanny, known as “Zanny,” had kidnapped her.

Zanny was revealed to not exist, but the prosecutors alleged Anthony had suffocated Caylee with duct tape to escape the pressures of single motherhood.

Anthony’s attorneys said Caylee had accidentally drowned in the family swimming pool and that Anthony’s “seemingly carefree attitude” afterward

Anthony’s attorney Jose Baez spoke about the verdict.

“While we’re happy for Casey, there are no winners in this case,” Baez said. “Caylee has passed on far, far too soon and what my driving force has been for the last three years has been always to make sure that there has been justice for Caylee and Casey because Casey did not murder Caylee. It’s that simple. And today our system of justice has not dishonored her memory with a false conviction.”

Anthony will receive sentencing for the guilty charges Thursday.

Carillon Place Dining to open this fall Carillon Place Dining, a dining facility being built between Kohl and East Halls, is on schedule and set to open for the fall.

“This project is currently on the same schedule as the other new dining facility, but rain has caused some minor delays,” said Mike Paulus, director of Dining Services.

In addition to construction delays from weather, Carillon Place Dining started later due to tearing down Commons and the police office that used to be housed on the site. Prior to construction, steam and power lines that ran under the previously-existing building had to be relocated.

“They weren’t able to break ground in the

fall…the biggest delay was the demolition and relocating of the utilities,” Paulus said.

Since the overall facility is smaller, construction is being completed at a more rapid pace.

“It looks really different, especially since the last time I saw it in May,” said Sarah Mazur, a junior at the University who visited Bowling Green for the weekend.

Services available in Carillon Place Dining will mirror those in the new Oaks Dining Center, in addition to a Pinkberry Frozen Yogurt and a Mongolian grill.

“I’m really excited for all of the new dining options that will be available for the fall,” Mazur said.

Kevin Kruger, NASPA’s associate executive director, said Whipple is well-known in the higher education world and praised his student affairs expertise and his writing and presentation abilities.

Kruger also cited Whipple’s “tremendous international experience,” which will be valuable as NASPA examines the globalization of student affairs.

“We should really get a nice package of skills that are going to be real valuable to NASPA with Ed,” Kruger said.

Whipple’s international experiences began with spending his junior year of college in France, and he said that international experiences can provide educational experiences for everyone.

“People need to understand and appreciate individual differences, and you really get that through international experiences,” Whipple said.

Whipple said his experience helped lead him to his involvement in diversity programs around campus.

Emily Monago, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, said Whipple last worked with her to hire a full-time staffer for the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center, and the center would have been impossible to start without his

Karri Moore, coordinator of Fraternity and Sorority Life, is excited about the potential change in Greek housing.

“It brings an excitement to the air and the community,” Moore said. “I think it will bring a stronger school spirit to not only campus and our community, but also our alums, and [it] can help provide a more personalized college experience.”

In order to approve the necessary funding and support needed to begin construction, fraternity and sorority life staff members created a three-phase process in which to guide their research.

Phase one included visiting other universities around Ohio and neighboring states in order to observe how their Greek affairs were established as well as how housing and living conditions were organized.

A total of 25 to 30 schools were visited and assessed, including Miami University, Ohio University and Kent State University.

In addition, he has performed in the Office of Multicultural Affairs’ annual dinner theatre program and attended many of the program’s events.

Monago said he was very good at providing feedback for diversity peer educators after listening them speak over dinner.

“I can’t think of anything that we’ve done through the Office of Multicultural Affairs that he wasn’t very supportive of,” Monago said.

His support of students was felt in many organizations across the campus since his hiring in 1994. The office of student affairs worked to develop learning communities, first year experiences, initiated a crisis team for emergencies, reorganized the student affairs program in 1995 and created a dean of students area to “create a focus on student engagement,” Whipple said.

“A lot of the learning that you get does not occur in the classroom, so how do you piece that together?”

Whipple said. “Our job in Student Affairs is to make those connections and help students make connections on the academic side as well as on the … co-curricular part of the experience.”

His emphasis on providing a good learning environment outside of the classroom is reflected in his involvement in planning the Union’s renovations a decade ago.

Whipple said the former Union was known as the University Union, as opposed to the Student Union, and that University Activities Board was the only student organization

office located there.

“I felt that if the campus was going to have a strong student community, it needed sort of the … living room on campus,” Whipple said. “I think the Bowen-Thompson Student Union has been a successful part of student life and has certainly focused on the importance of student life outside the classroom.”

Whipple also had a hand in influencing student life outside of the University. City Municipal Administrator John Fawcett said Whipple’s effective communication skills helped keep a good rapport with the University and the city, often citing students as examples of the community’s strengths.

“The approach that he’s taken over the years has … diminished this “us versus them” type of mentality that typically exists in a university/community setting,” Fawcett said.

One way Whipple stayed connected to students was teaching graduate courses in higher education and student affairs. He said he will not teach in his new position but hopes to get back into it eventually.

“I felt it was important to get in the classroom on a regular basis to listen to what students were talking about,” Whipple said. “If I didn’t listen to what students were talking about … my own administrative work would have suffered.”

Whipple emphasized his successes were the result of a team effort with his fellow workers and students.

“I’ve been very impressed with Bowling Green students,” Whipple said. “I would not have stayed around for 17 years if I hadn’t been.”

Along with University staff members, external consultants helped determine what qualities were important and how to present material to the University school board. Associate Dean of Students Chris H. Bullins is one of the staff members overseeing the project.

“It’s our goal to determine what the appropriate approach to constructing new housing is going to be. After visiting many of our sister schools, as well as many others, we were able to determine how their Greek life operated as well as how their housing created a more in-depth Greek experience,” Bullins said.

The same in-depth Greek experience is something that students want to see in the coming years.

Larry Serfozo, a member of the Inter-Fraternity Council and senior at the University thinks it’s a step in the right direction.

“Creating and constructing new housing can really improve how we handle things in our Greek affairs,” Serfozo said. “It’ll create a central flow for all aspects of Greek life, as well as improve recruitment, community ties, leadership and friendship, In many ways it can become the focal point for Greek life in general.”

Phase one was approved by the

Board of Trustees in the beginning of June Phase two involves looking at the University internally to assess what the proper direction of housing should incorporate.

Factors like style, staff and cost are going to be researched and estimated within the next couple of years, giving the organization solid work to present to the board.

“Phase one was crucial in figuring out how other universities handled and practiced their Greek life, which allowed us to brainstorm and create our own ideas,” Bullins said. “Phase two is important in determining what we need to do internally in order for this construction to become a reality.

The current phase will allow us to come up with actual cost estimates as well as plans to present to the board.”

Phase three is securing the proper funding in order to begin and complete construction.

There may be some time however, until this final phase comes into fruition.

“We’re looking at 18 to 24 months before we begin any kind of actual construction,” Bullins said. “But this is the type of future we’ve been working toward for a long time. These are concrete steps to our future and I couldn’t be more excited for what that future holds.”

This summer, I am working in a screw products factory.

My tasks vary but generally involve thousands of small metal parts.

As I sit tapping (this is the term for threading nuts) thousands of hex nuts or stand slotting the heads of screws, I tend to be reminded of interdependence and how many people have performed small actions like these to get each part to where it is and where it will be.

Each small piece that I drill, tap, or slot was cut from a rod of metal and shaped. Before this it was shipped and before that it was mined and purified. After I perform my small action, each piece is finished by other people and shipped somewhere. It may then be used in a working air hose, assembling a car or even building a house.

Considering this interdependence, I then noticed this on a larger scale. I can appreciate how many people it took before I eat the hamburger I order at a restaurant.

Someone took my order and others prepared the food in the kitchen. There are other people who grew, raised, slaughtered and harvested all that goes into this burger.

Not only this, but I can appreciate all those who made and cleaned the table and chair I use, fashioned and developed the restaurant, produced the music that is playing on the radio and even think about the words in my menu.

I am able to read these words because I have been taught and because the language it is written in has been developed and shared. The system of writing and the means of printing were also developed; without them we would not have the convenience of menus.

Even in mentioning the people who have played all of these various supportive roles, I still fail to mention countless others. As I reflect and eat my burger, I recognize

that these considerations do not even begin to scratch the surface of dependence and interdependence.

Now, for example, think about your existence and your life. (I hope this is blowing your mind as much as it blows mine.)

In the fall I will return to college where I will continue to study education. Teaching is an incredible, humbling and difficult job. Even so, we probably spend too much time talking about how great and important teachers are in the Education Department.

In other departments similar claims may take place.

Certainly jokes and arguments abound about who is more important and who is better in regards to jobs and careers, but how often do we stop to remember that we need everyone to do different jobs?

What good would it be if we all did the same thing?

It is amazing how much we, as a culture, focus on our independence and who has more power or is more important and how often we fail to recognize our dependence. In his song, Elijah, Rich Mullins sings: “There’s people been friendly, but they’d never be your friend. Sometimes this has bent me to the ground.”

Why is it that we are so interdependent and yet tend to be so lonely in the United States?

Yes, it is great that we are free and, historically, we have fought dearly for independence. But it is time for us to recognize our great dependence and pop our personal bubbles.

We need to start not just acting friendly but being friends.

There are so many people touching our lives each and every day whether we see them or whether we make use of the work they have done without ever knowing their names or even their existence.

We depend on each other so much and it is time we recognize this so that we will not go on being blind to our interdependence, but rather open our eyes and participate in the community we can be.

New cigarette policy is inconsistent MATHEW DAVOLI COLUMNIST While chatting with an acquaintance outside a building, a rather obese fellow twitched his nose, furrowed his brow and strode toward us like a man on a mission.

“Do you have any idea how unhealthy that cigarette is for you?” He told my friend out of lips that sat above a triple chin.

As he waddled away I could not stop myself from being annoyed at the situation. Really? Is he the one to lecture people about their health?

How a b o u t s o m e consistency?

I was annoyed in a similar manner when I recently happened across an article in the USA Today that outlined the new government regulation of cigarette packaging, which demands a graphic image to cover twenty percent of a pack of cigarettes.

Looking at the government

sanctioned pictures that accompanied the article, which included diseased lungs (like no one has ever heard of tobacco smoke hurting one’s lungs before), I could not help but be annoyed with the inconsistency of such an act.

Of course there are many inconsistencies regarding the government and tobacco, such as giving out farm subsidies to tobacco farmers while also funding antitobacco initiatives. But this picture initiative seems to cross a certain line as it singles out cigarettes for over the top warnings while withholding such warnings on other unhealthy products.

A good example of this would be one of the graphic warnings that includes an overweight man with an oxygen mask on with the caption “Warning: Cigarettes cause strokes and heart disease.” If they are going to do that then why not post the same picture and similar caption on the lids of Häagen-Dazs ice cream?

How about having pictures of bloated corpses plastered over 20 percent of the walls

of the International House of Pancakes or Cold Stone while they’re at it?

If the American consumer is too stupid to be simply informed about the negative health effects of a product in print and is in need of scary pictures, then why not require such pictures wherever unhealthy food is sold?

But enough about obesity.

How about alcohol?

To me alcohol is far worse than tobacco.

I have never heard of someone taking up smoking in one night and dying from it. I have heard far too many stories of people having a long night of drinking and ending up dead the next day.

I have also never heard of a correlation between smoking cigarettes and engaging in violent acts, such as domestic violence and rape. A correlation can be found with the consumption of alcohol.

Also, while someone could be heavily addicted to cigarettes and still be a productive member of society, it is not necessarily the case that an alcoholic can do the same.

And to be blunt, while driving on a highway I would

much rather look in my rearview mirror and see the driver behind me take a drag of a cigarette than a swig of beer.

Then why not require a picture of someone dead from passing out and choking on their own vomit on a bottle of beer? Why not have wine bottles covered with pictures of a decapitated corpse surrounded by the twisted steal of an alcohol induced car wreck? Why not require bars to have large murals of diseased livers as well?

I really do not understand the inconsistency of this new public policy. The whole thing just seems so silly.

I write this not as someone who is against government warnings and regulations but as someone who is for them.

I do believe it is a legitimate role of government to inform consumers of the health risk of products and to make sure that manufacturers are being honest about their products.

It is my concern that policies such as the new draconian cigarette regulations work to delegitimize that role.

Students should weigh college options MAX FILBY EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

For high school graduates, choosing the right university is a hard decision.

You just graduated from one place and the last thing you want to do is decide where you’ll be serving your next four-year sentence. That was the case for me.

I didn’t take the time to weigh my options and being from Sylvania, Ohio, I definitely didn’t want to go to the “suitcase campus” known as Bowling Green State University, where almost a third of my high school peers were heading. Instead, I chose to go to Ohio University

because of its “prestigious” journalism program and honestly, a beautiful campus.

I even worked for The Post, OU’s answer to The BG News.

Some people there might call me a traitor, but honestly I made the right choice … the second time around.

Transferring to Bowling Green State University was the best decision I ever made; I just wish I would have made it sooner. Choosing a college to attend is a decision that potential students should think about more before committing.

Just because a college is right down the road, like the University was from my hometown, doesn’t mean it isn’t the best choice. Don’t worry about seeing “too many” of your former peers at your college of choice because

you’ll make new friends and only really see the people you want to see.

It’s important to not let proximity or potential peers affect the decision of which college to attend.

For students who might be like me, it’s never too late to transfer. Maybe Bowling Green wasn’t the right choice for you, like it was for me.

Wouldn’t you rather go to a school where you’ll enjoy your time on campus than regret ever stepping foot on it?

Of course.

I was afraid I would be behind when I transferred to the University for the spring 2010 semester, but I wasn’t.

Although my grades from OU were wiped out, I worked to gain back about a 3.5 GPA and got involved as a member of The BG News staff.

So to all incoming students at orientation this week, be sure that you are making the right choice by enrolling at the University for the fall. Any school might be right for one person but not another.

The students at the University who complain that campus is just a bunch of out of date facilities are the ones who more than likely made the wrong decision in the first place.

Yes the University is home to several older buildings and poorly kept signs with the seal stickers falling off, but it’s a good place to call your home away from home for the next four years.

Just make sure it’s the right home.

Saving money and still having fun during the summer months is not an issue for senior Andrea Davis.

With fluctuating gas prices, the difficulty of planning summer activities can put a dent in your wallet. Davis, who is double majoring in business education and marketing education, takes advantage of student specials in combination with coupons and budgeting.

“I actually have a spreadsheet ... and figure my expenses for the month ahead of time,” Davis said.

Davis uses the student coupon book that includes savings for restaurants, tattoos, tanning and more. She also flashes her student I.D. at different locations offering discounts for students.

Goodwill is one of these locations and gives 10 percent off when you show your student I.D. “We go to the student movie night at the [mall],” Davis said. Cinemark, located at the Woodland Mall, has student I.D. night every Thursday; 3D movie tickets cost $5.75 and 2D tickets cost $3.00.

Beyonce, one of the world’s biggest pop singers, returns after a three year wait with her latest album “4.”

For her fourth album, she reached out for an all-star cast of writers and producers to work on what is sure to be one of the summer’s hottest albums, including Jeff

Selena Gomez is living a dream. Her summer blockbuster “Monte Carlo” made approximately $10 million this weekend despite fierce “Transformers 3” competition. She’s also dating Justin Bieber, the most sought-after teen to grace the American music scene in decades.

And with the release of her third studio album, she’s becoming one of this summer’s biggest entertainers.

“When the Sun Goes Down” is pure bubble gum pop. The album’s first single “Who Says?” is a fun, fast-paced confidence booster. I’ve received plenty of positive reinforcement from this jam, and I’m a 19-year-old guy. I’m not ashamed.

The summer blockbusters are in full swing and Michael Bay’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” is a disappointing mess.

The third and final installment to Bay’s Transformers franchise picks up four years from where the second movie left off. Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) has graduated from college and struggles to find a job and a place in the world he has twice helped save. The good robots, the Autobots, work with the nations of the

Whether it’s for economic or environmental reasons or both, thriftiness is a wise act for any household. Personally, being thrifty daily means we can splurge on a nice meal out once a month. I use these tips to help save dollars in my kitchen and in my wallet.

Real fast food: Many folks think fast food is the cheapest food. I beg to differ. The long-term health costs and environmental costs of fast food alone outweigh the convenience of a dollar menu.

Get the most bang for your buck by cooking ahead. Every Sunday I roast a whole chicken or braise a 6-lb pork shoulder. For two people that might seem crazy, but the meal lasts us the majority of the week.

With chicken, we have a lovely Sunday meal, and come Monday through Friday we make salads, sandwiches and wraps faster than any drivethru window.

stocked pantry means good food in a flash. Most pantry items are cost effective: pasta, canned tomatoes, oils and vinegars, legumes, rice, garlic, onions, potatoes, stocks, spices and herbs. Home cooks new to cooking shouldn’t worry about fancy brands.

Truly, it’s about learning how to make something wonderful with five ingredients in under half an hour. My pantry is the first place I turn when I need a quick meal for less. Think pasta dishes, rice and beans or hearty soups.

And I almost always get two to three meals from one when I trust my pantry over a quick fix like a frozen dinner.

Shop seasonally: I live for Farmers Markets. I love how they bring communities together and give us face time with the farmers who grow our food. But what I love the most is buying local foods, usually at a fraction of what I pay at the grocery store. Farmers Markets are one way to find good food for great deals. Women’s golf looks to contend for MAC Championship after ninth place finish last season

The women’s golf team is looking to put it all together this coming season after its ninth place finish in last season’s Mid-American Conference Championship tournament.

With only two seniors—only one a regular starter—on the roster last season, the Falcons were young. The team’s scoring average leader, Bailey Arnold, felt the team’s overall inexperience played a factor during the championship.

“It was a lot of player’s first time there last year and we didn’t know exactly what to expect, and there was a lot of pressure,” Arnold said.

Last season was a building year into this coming year, Arnold said.

The Falcons showed promise early on, setting multiple team and individual scoring records at the North Texas Fall Classic but did not place better than sixth in any tournament last season.

To improve, players are competing in several tournaments this summer, Arnold said. Like other sports, the NCAA does not allow the golf team to hold organized practices while school is not in session, so it is up to each individual player to enter tournaments and continue crafting their game during the summer.

Coach Stephanie Young said most are competing in the TaylorMade-sponsored college

tour, which puts on tournaments in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.

“It’s a very good [TaylorMade] tour because a lot of girls we play against are in it, too, so you know how you stack up,” Arnold said.

Players will continue competing in the TaylorMade tournaments, among others, until organized practices begin the first week of fall semester.

In the fall, Coach Young will have auditions to determine which five players on the seven-woman roster will start the first tournament. Lowest

Falcon coaches move into Stroh Center offices

After months of anticipation, the Stroh Center has officially opened its doors.

While sporting events will not be taking place until volleyball’s home opener Sept. 9, the coaches

of the volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams picked up the keys to their Stroh Center offices Friday.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be moving into such a great facility,” said Louis Orr, men’s basketball head coach. “I’m blessed, thankful and excited about the future.”

With the main floor and practice floor completed, the teams will now be able to have open gym at the Stroh Center for practices in anticipation of their respective seasons.

“It was a lot of work and preparation to try to pack up the many, many years of Anderson Arena, so

it was bittersweet, but it was really exciting to go into that brand new building,” said Denise Van De Walle, volleyball head coach.

The move was particularly special for Van De Walle, as not only

The number 13 is not so lucky when it comes to the NBA. The league took an unwanted turn Friday when it announced the decision of a lockout, the league’s first in 13 years.

As if this news wasn’t disappointing enough, it is still questionable if there will even be a 2011-12 season.

Disputes over a new collective bargaining agreement have been in the works for 18 months prior to the lockout.

“We have a huge philosophical divide,” said David Stern, commissioner of the NBA. Players suggested that the league start with a clean slate after the holiday and start the process from scratch.

There has been a lot of back and forth; it might actually do them some good. The fear of the league and the players has to be mounting since nothing has been settled thus far.

There is no telling how much longer it could take.

Players wouldn’t start to hurt financially until November when they do not receive their paychecks; owners on the other hand, will face deficits with partnerships, sponsorships and advanced ticket sales.

I can imagine how the newly drafted class of athletes must feel. Their first shot in the big leagues and their dream of becoming a professional basketball player is all put on hold because all the NBA could do was agree to disagree.

The Cleveland Cavaliers might have even had a chance at making strong improvements next season.

With taking the No. 1 overall draft pick Kyrie Irving, a Duke point guard, the Cavs were looking at a strong improvement from this past season.

The sheer fact that Irving was the No. 1 pick in 2011 will allow people to compare him to the ever famous LeBron James, who was the number one pick in 2003, drafted to Cleveland.

But the comparisons between the two stop there.

James’ size and experience surpasses the six-foot-two-inch Irving, whose potential is being determined on the 11 game season he had at Duke that was cut short due to a toe injury, which he says is completely healed.

Despite Irving’s lack of college experience, the Cavs have faith that his star quality outweighed his experience.

What remains to be seen is whether the NBA goes the same route the NHL did in 2005, when the league lost the entire season to a lockout.

But let’s not completely chalk up the season as a loss just yet.

In the past, a full season was played when the lockout ended in September, like in 1995. And even when a lockout has extended into a season, like after a 204 day lockout in 1998 that reduced the schedule to 50 games, basketball was still played.

First the NFL lockout, now the NBA. At least we still have baseball.

All Pro Lake Stadium, located in Avon, Ohio, will be the new home of the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the 2012-14 baseball season, the league office announced.

The BG men’s soccer team will be the first Falcon team to take to home field this season. The Falcons will take on Butler in a scrimmage Aug. 21. The Falcons open their regular season Aug. 26 with a home game against Michigan.

Men’s golf team looks to use experience to improve this season

After a strong showing during the 2010-11 regular season, the BG men’s golf team is looking to put its disappointing finish in the Mid-American Conference Championship behind it.

The Falcons had four topthree team finishes during the regular season and had two individual tournament wins, but finished seventh out of nine teams at the MAC Championships.

Head coach Garry Winger, entering his 14th season as the team’s head coach, was happy with the strides the team made throughout the season, especially when considering the youth of the team. Of the eight members of the team last season, none were seniors and all will return this year. “It was a young group that I feel progressed nicely throughout the season,�

Captain Drew Preston, entering his senior year, won the John Piper Intercollegiate last season, which is the team’s annual home event, and two other top-three finishes in the season. He played in all 33 rounds for the Falcons last season, and his 74.81 career average round is less than a stroke of BG’s alltime record of 74.43.

Charlie Olsen, a transfer from Division III Hope College, picked up the other individual tournament win in the Falcons’ season. He shot a 12-under 204 at the Austin Peay Intercollegiate in October, which broke the BG 54-hole record for a tournament by four strokes. “To bring Charlie in like that and have the success that he did was great for the program and great for Charlie,�

The team is not allowed to have official practices until the first day of classes in the fall semester, so everyone on the team went home to train for the summer, Winger said.

At home the players practice and compete in tournaments and courses close to where they live. “You like them to stay competitively sharp ‌ for some guys they play more tournaments,â€? Winger said. “It’s kind of a deal of what you can afford and keeping yourself and your game competitively sharp for the fall because once we get back we start competing.â€?

However, while keeping their game sharp is something Winger wants, he doesn’t want them to get burnt out before the season

Orr feels that, among other things, the fan-friendly complexion of the Stroh Center is one of the things that stands

out most about the new building. “Up on the top concourse, if you look down at the court you just see the beauty of the arena,� he said. “It’s going to be a great place to watch a game and a great place to play and coach a game.�

With her team starting the athletic era of the Stroh Center, Van De Walle hopes that they can help spring BG

starts. “You have to manage your days that you play competitively,� Winger said. “You don’t want to play too many tournaments, but you have to play enough that you make sure that you’re mentally and competitively sharp.�

With eight players returning to the team this season, Winger expects his team to improve last season’s showing at the MAC Championships. “In my opinion we’re going to return a very strong team ‌ we have guys who have quite a bit of experience individually and collectively as a team,â€? Winger said. “So I’m expecting pretty good things from this team as long as they put forth the effort this summer to improve.â€?

She postponed her Saturday night, sold-out show in Louisville. She tweeted the news, saying she was “so, so sorry,� and withen 20 minutes get well wishes were a popular trending topic on Twitter. The show is now set for Oct. 11.

format she’s laid down since “Independent Women� but it has underperformed on the charts and is easily the album’s lowest point. “Best Thing I’ve Never Had� feels like Beyonce trying to re-create “Irreplaceable.�

Although lyrically the song is pretty lazy, it is a much better single than “Girls.�

The album’s best moments come from the funky “Love on Top� and the Kanye West produced “Party,� which features a rare guest verse from the elusive Andre 3000.

Beyonce does a great job on “4� of sticking to her strengths and not trying to sound like any other popular artist. “4� is extremely consistent and there are very few skippable tracks on the record thanks to phenomenal production, solid song-writing and, of course, Beyonce’s powerful and engaging vocal performance.

Rapper Jay-Z plans to bring his restaurant and bar franchise, 40/40, to London this year. He has partnered with England and Chelsea soccer pleayer Ashley Cole in the multi-million pound deal. “London is one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world and the perfect location for our new venue,� Jay-Z said.

One of these sassy tracks is “Bang Bang Bang.� She sings, “My new boy knows the way I want it / He’s got more swagger than you.� This must be a reference to her “Baby, baby, baby, oh.� What other white singer would say he has ‘swagger’?

As a whole, “When the Sun Goes Down� is a light piece of music for your summer playlist. Nothing more, nothing less.

And I don’t know about you, but I’m willing to spend a few hours weeding if it means I can save on my grocery bill.

Sentinel’s crashed ship on the “dark side of the moon.�

When the the Autobot leader, Optimus Prime, discovers this horrible truth, he must stop Sentinel from destroying the world he now calls home. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon� is a complete disappointment. Granted, I went into the theater with an open mind after the debacle of “Transfomers: Revenge of the Fallen,� but Bay clearly did not learn from his mistakes. The film can’t decide if it wants to be a serious action film or a high school comedy riddled with immature jokes and cameos from actors who have no place or purpose in the story. I for one was hoping for more serious action. Then again, it’s a Michael Bay film so I may have been setting my

sights too far.

The most irritating aspect of the past two Transformers films, in my opinion, has been the lack of character development. The film spends so much time between the story lines of Sam, the military/government personnel, the Autobots and the Decepticons, that it just becomes too much. The film is grossly over-timed in the first place and does not allow any kind of character development that would lead viewers to care about anyone on screen.

The one good aspect of the film was the presence of a slightly thought-out storyline.

Thankfully this was Bay’s last Transformers film and hopefully in a couple of years the series will have a new director who isn’t so distracted by large explosions that he loses sight of a good story.
