ALEXANDRA DIAS LIGHT BETWEEN WORDS THE THEME WAS THE LIGHT In the library "the light" is indeed between words but I also made a point that words were physically present and more than that, they had to be readable, pronounceable and thus truly endowed with all their alleged and celebrated powers.

THE PATH Words, here taken as appeals to light, travel on a path through the translucence of materials, going from instrumental cruelty to the meaning in its purest state and from there to the expression of thought on light, the thought itself eager for light - the place of words written in books like the ones on the library shelves. I let the Book, the people, and some Portuguese poets and writers speak. They make amazing statements that I invite all of you to visit. Then, in the silence, arises the place to the invocation of life and the perfection of its forms and finally, again the radiant light as electromagnetic and particle energy simultaneously simple and discursive.

PROCESS Mixed techniques were used, involving painting, printing and gluing on wedding veils.

REFERENCES The variously cut circular elements are intended to evoke cathedral rosettes, pieces of mechanisms and forms of life.

The shape of the works presented and, in particular the presence of an authenticating mark plus the golden applications is inspired in old message cylinders.

The calligraphy is inspired in the one used by José de Almada Negreiros in his well-known 1948 self-portrait done in graphite on paper in which the author portrays himself over a background of quotations.

ALEXANDRA DIAS LUZ ENTRE PALAVRAS O TEMA ERA A LUZ Na biblioteca "a luz" está entre palavras mas fiz também questão que as palavras estivessem fisicamente presentes e mais do que isso que fossem legíveis, articuláveis e assim verdadeiramente providas de todos os seus alegados e celebrados poderes.

PERCURSO As palavras, aqui entendidas como invocações da luz, percorrem um caminho sobre a translucidade dos materiais, indo da crueza instrumental à significação no estado puro e daí para a expressão do pensamento sobre a luz ele mesmo ávido de luz - o lugar das palavras escritas em livros como os que estão nas estantes da biblioteca. Deixei que falasse o Livro, o povo, e alguns poetas e escritores portugueses. Falam frases que descobri espantosas e que convido a visitar. Surge depois no silêncio o lugar à invocação da vida e da perfeição das suas formas e finalmente de novo a luz irradiante como energia electromagnética e corpuscular simultaneamente simples e discursiva.

PROCESSO Utilizaram-se técnicas mistas, envolvendo pintura, impressão e colagem sobre véus de noiva.

REFERÊNCIAS Os elementos circulares diversamente recortados, pretendem evocar rosáceas de catedral, peças de mecanismos e formas de vida.

A forma das obras apresentadas e nomeadamente a presença de uma marca autenticadora e as aplicações de dourado inspira-se nos antigos rolos de mensagem.

A caligrafia foi inspirada na utilizada por José de Almada Negreiros no seu conhecido auto-retrato de 1948 executado a grafite sobre papel em que o autor se retrata sobre um fundo de citações.

LIGHT BETWEEN WORDS The writing flows protected in the web, decomposing the spaces created in a register of a primitive wisdom connected to the mysteries of nature, like a seed that promotes and shapes its own universe.

Like a book that opens under the light irradiating from the knowledge contained in the bookshelves of the library, the works in exhibition reveal multiple possibilities of metamorphosis of the words, generating subtle readings through the overlapping of their diaphanous support.

Through Light, the Shadows created by the written words become presence and embody the sense of each one such as image and as narrative.

The title of each image and the citations contained in them unveil a poetic vision, which is almost intimate, creating comprehensive contexts in the approach of this project so full of references.

Under the metaphor of looking, the works in exhibition show the wide possibilities of the transfiguration, where the presence self-referential intersects, sometimes in otherness, reference that is also naming through the written word.

In this exhibition, images and words are composed by layers, in visible overlap, using translucent materials as veils, through which " in the silence arises the place to the invocation of life and to the perfection of its forms".

These are experiences and memories accumulated that carry us to readings inspired by the words or symbols that punctuate the flowing spaces that explore the inside and the outside, the light and shadow, the front and the back.

Matter of Time, travelling through plots aligned in a higher or lower density added for to do a form - be it colour, word or symbol, be it stain, sense or stamp, getting an apparent delicacy of a space which builds itself decomposing - it is revealed in the individual and inverse process of the observation of geology from times and signs, of wish to communicate.

Each work communicates through the fullness and mystery of the origin by inducing curiosity, using imagination and creativity, searching truths in words and images - circular and circumscribed shapes, rose-windows, crystals, minerals, stars, planets, cartographies drawn in labyrinthine geometries from depictions of the biology or chemistry - in the transparency of colour, from the veil and the plot, in the reflected glow of the shapes and the golden stains.

With this exhibition, Alexandra recreates the bond that joins the marks le by communication in ancient times, through message cylinders, with artists like Almada Negreiros (her reference) in a re-discovery and contemporary sensitiveness, wishing the meeting with the interpreters of original thought and respiration, able to return a new meaning to the forms and the words.

LUZ ENTRE PALAVRAS A escrita protegida na teia flui, decompondo os espaços criados num registo de uma sabedoria primitiva ligada aos mistérios da natureza, como uma semente que promove e dá forma ao seu universo.

Como um livro que se abre sob a luz que irradia do conhecimento contido nas prateleiras da biblioteca, as obras expostas apresentam múltiplas possibilidades de metamorfose das palavras, gerando subtis leituras através da sobreposição do seu diáfano suporte.

Através da Luz, as Sombras criadas pelas palavras escritas, tornam-se presença e dão corpo ao sentido de cada uma, como imagem e como narrativa.

O título de cada imagem e as citações nelas contidas desvelam uma visão poética, quase íntima, criando contextos abrangentes na abordagem deste projecto carregado de referências.

Sob a metáfora do olhar, as obras expostas apresentam as amplas possibilidades da transfiguração, em que a presença autoreferencial se cruza, por vezes na alteridade, referência que é também nomeação, através da palavra escrita.

Nesta exposição as imagens e as palavras constituem-se por camadas, em sobreposição, utilizando suportes translúcidos como véus, através dos quais "surge no silêncio o lugar à invocação da vida e à perfeição das suas formas".

São experiências e memórias acumuladas que nos transportam a leituras inspiradas pelas palavras ou pelos símbolos que pontuam os espaços esvoaçantes que exploram o dentro e o fora, a luz e a sombra, a frente e o verso.

Matéria do Tempo, percorrendo tramas alinhadas numa maior ou menor densidade acrescentada para dar forma - seja cor, palavra ou símbolo, seja mancha, sentido ou carimbo, atingindo uma delicadeza aparente de um espaço que se constrói decompondo - revelando-se no processo individual e inverso da observação da geologia de tempos e sinais, de desejo de comunicar.

Cada obra comunica através do absoluto e do mistério da origem ao provocar a curiosidade, utilizando a imaginação e a criatividade, procurando verdades nas palavras e nas imagens - formas circulares e circunscritas, rosáceas, cristais, minerais, estrelas, planetas, cartografias desenhadas nas geometrias labirínticas de representações da biologia ou da química - na transparência da cor, do véu e da trama, no brilho reflectido das formas e das manchas douradas.

Com esta exposição Alexandra recria o elo que junta as marcas deixadas pelos primórdios da comunicação, através dos rolos das mensagens, a artistas como Almada Negreiros (sua referência), numa re-descoberta e sensibilidade contemporânea, desejando o encontro com intérpretes de um pensamento e respiração original, capaz de devolver às formas e às palavras um novo sentido.

NOTA BIOGRÁFICA Alexandra Dias é licenciada em Biologia pela Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, doutorada em Botânica Aplicada pela Universidade de Évora e professora no Departamento de Biologia da UÉ.

Interessando-se pela expressão plástica que com frequência associa à palavra, expõe com regularidade desde 2004 trabalhos que vão da gravura, à fotografia e fotomontagem, instalação, desenho, pintura e técnicas mistas. É da sua autoria o mural "Aula sobre o cavalo" localizado em frente às cavalariças da Herdade da Mitra.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Alexandra Dias holds a degree in Biology by the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, a PhD in Applied Botany by the Universidade de Évora and is a lecturer at the Department of Biology, UÉ.

Interested in plastic expression that frequently associates with words, from 2004 she regularly presents works ranging from engravings to photographs and photomontages, installations, drawings, paintings and mixed techniques. She is the author of the mural "Aula sobre o cavalo" (Lecture about the horse) located in front of the stables of Herdade da Mitra.
