world average of 29. One IB student scored full marks for her Diploma (a feat achieved by less than 0.01% of the global cohort). In addition to sitting three A Levels, many students also undertook the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) where 65% of entries achieved an A* grade. 92% of this cohort achieved their first or insurance university offer, taking up places at a wide range of world leading universities, including the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol, Edinburgh, York and Leeds, where they are studying courses as diverse as History, Linguistics, Fashion Design, Veterinary Medicine and Natural Sciences. Despite extensive changes to the GCSEs, we maintained an extremely high 71% A*-A (7-9 equivalent), with a third of the cohort obtained 10 A/A* equivalents. These exceptional results are a combination of first-rate teaching and the efforts of the girls who have worked exceptionally hard to navigate the curriculum so admirably.

personal highlight this year has been welcoming so many alumnae into school. I feel extremely fortunate that we have such a wide and diverse community of alumnae who are keen to be actively involved in shaping future generations of young women. I passionately believe in the value of mentorship, particularly women championing women, and it is extremely rewarding to see our alumnae giving their time and expertise to develop a culture of support. Over the past couple of years, we have launched a series of mentorship programmes within the school, from alumnae mentoring Sixth Form students, staff mentoring new members of staff, to students mentoring younger year groups. I am keen that our students grow up recognising that they are never too young to start mentoring and providing guidance. I do hope you enjoy reading about these initiatives.

Equally as impressive is our ranking on the sports field, we are currently ranked number two for girls’ sport in the UK (and 8th when ranked against co-ed and boys’ schools). To achieve this without offering sports scholarships is an enormous testament to our PE Department under the leadership of Jane Axford.

Whilst it is wonderful to share successes, I feel it is important that we also remember those who sadly left our community over the last twelve months. In particular I would like to give thanks for the lives of two former Headmistresses – Rosanne Randle and Diana Willis. I had the pleasure of knowing them both, and am grateful for the support they gave me during the formation of BGS.

Promoting a passion for STEM has always been a priority, both in our heritage schools and at BGS, and as part of the school’s on-going upgrades to create future inspired facilities, last summer we created ground breaking labs and stunning breakout spaces, (as seen on our front cover) providing modern areas for collaboration, inquiry and research. Our state of the art facilities replicate those found in universities and the working world, helping prepare the girls for their next steps.

We always welcome visitors and we welcome you to see them in action. Please contact our Alumnae office to arrange a visit.

I am also sure you will join with me in sending our thoughts to the Garrett family. Richard Garrett, Director of the Bedford School Association, sadly lost his battle to cancer late last year; he was a huge presence in the Harpur Trust community and is greatly missed.

It was fitting that at the end of the 2018 academic year that we welcomed award-winning materials scientist, engineer, communicator and adventurer, Dr Anna Ploszajski (DAHS 2009) to school as our Prize Giving speaker. Anna delivered an inspiring speech about one of her biggest challenges to date – swimming the English Channel. She focused on how the fear of failure can stop us moving forward and how we can build strategies to overcome such fears. She too reiterated the importance of having a supportive network of friends, family and mentors to spur you on; and equally the importance of taking time to reflect and prepare properly. I am pleased to report that Anna successfully overcame her fear of jellyfish to complete the challenge!

Finally, please congratulate two members of BGS staff, who are also alumnae, on their promotions. From September, Philippa Hooley (née Brading, BHS 1999) will be Assistant Head - Data and Operations and Verity Mason–McLeod (née Mason, BHS 2004) will be Director of Sport as Jane Axford becomes our Assistant Head - Experiential Learning. They will play key roles in delivering the vision of BGS and inspiring generations of students.

Academically, I am extremely proud of all our students as we once again celebrated excellent results for 2018. We obtained 75% A*-B equivalent A Level and IB combined, with our IB cohort achieving an average point score of 37.5 against a

Your School, My School Bedford High School 1979 alumna Ruth Hogan is the author of the award winning The Keeper of Lost Things, The Particular Wisdom of Sally Red Shoes, and her recently published third novel, Queenie Malone’s Paradise Hotel. Her career in writing came after a number of significant life events, including a car accident and illness which gave her the push to start to writing.

BGS Head Girl for 2018-19, Lauren Lewis joined the School into Year 9 from Kingshott School, and is studying Mathematics, Philosophy and Ethics, and Physics at A Level.

Lauren is currently leaning towards a joint degree in Physics and Philosophy but is still exploring a range of possibilities.

What are your memories of your first day at school?

How did school/teachers shape your value and aspirations?

RH: Getting lost! The school seemed so enormous and I remember getting lost on the way to the cloakroom.

RH: My time at Bedford High School gave me a very broad education which has proved invaluable. Subjects such as Music Appreciation and Art History didn’t seem important at the time, but I have been thankful for what I learnt so often in my adult life in both social and academic situations. My time at the High School gave me confidence, broadened my horizons and taught me the value of good manners, and I made friends who are still my friends today.

LL: The majority of my memories relating to my earliest days of school have faded, but I do remember my dad ushering me out into the garden on my first day of primary school when I was just four years old, to take a picture of me in my brand new, and somewhat oversized school uniform, which I was assured that given time, I would “grow into nicely”. I also met my best friend of 13 years on my first day of school, and we have been inseparable ever since. I also remember the awe that I felt on my first day at BGS in Year 9. Having come from a school where there were only sixteen people in my year, and entering into one with over one hundred was a massive change for me, a change that definitely took some time to get used to!

LL: I am a strong believer that you are the product of the role models that are in orbit around you, and in looking back at the teachers that I have had the pleasure of being taught by over the years, I truly can see so many of their values in myself. My History teacher and my Maths teacher at primary school, my form tutor during my GCSEs, and my Science teachers during my time at BGS, just to name a few, have all imparted their passion for the value of education onto me, and for that I am eternally grateful.

What were your favourite subjects and why?

RH: I loved English literature and English language. I’ve always loved reading and writing – playing with words! I also liked Latin (handy for reading gravestones!) and cookery (aka domestic science) because it seemed more like mucking about than a proper lesson! School inspired my love of books! I learned to understand and love Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Chaucer and Shakespeare. I think this was largely down to my amazing English teacher, Mrs Molian.

Sum up your school days in three words?

RH: Invaluable, hectic and life-changing!

LL: Exhausting. Eventful. Unforgettable.

LL: Ever since I was little, I have always been a child that continually asks “why?” about anything and everything, and consequently subjects that attempt to answer my questions are the ones that I have truly fallen in love with during my time at school. For this reason the Sciences have always fascinated me, principally Physics and its quest to understand how the universe ticks. For the same reason Philosophy has always been a joy to study, its literal translation being ‘love of wisdom’.

If you could have your school years again is there anything you would do differently?

RH: Work harder. I didn’t realise when I was at school how valuable my education would be to me throughout life.

LL: Now that I am nearing the end of my time at school, the only thing that I wish I had done differently is savoured my time more. I have always been extremely focused on achieving the best grades that I can, putting 110% into all my school work, often at the expense of sleep, downtime, or time spent with friends and family. However in hindsight, although of course a determination to succeed I’m sure will prove to be an invaluable life skill, I now realise that the stress I put myself under to excel in end of term tests and projects that seemed like the be all and end all at the time, meant that my time at school has swept by in the blink of an eye. I would love to go back and relive my school years utterly in the moment.

Reflections

Former students and colleagues look back on the lives of two headmistresses, Rosanne Randle, Headmistress of DAHS (1990 - 2000) and Diana Willis, Headmistress of BHS (1987 - 1994).

Rosanne Randle 1944-2018 participation, be it in sport, music, drama, charity, public speaking, volunteering and entrepreneurialism, where it was the sheer involvement and teamwork that was cherished and rewarded. She instilled a ‘cando’ attitude and a desire to embrace opportunities for the pure benefit of immersing ourselves in new situations, learning fresh skills, and sharing lasting comradeship.”

Rosanne represented a new era of Headmistress. Her outlook was modern and she loved all areas of learning.

She instilled the mantra ‘busy girls are happy girls, and happy girls are busy girls’, which was adopted by both staff and students. Rosanne’s vision focused on the importance of team leadership, which increased commitment from everyone to make the school flourish.

DAHS grew with the introduction of rowing, Junior School developments and a new Drama Studio, Art and DT area.

Former Deputy Head Girl, Dr Fiona Smith reflected: “Mrs Randle encouraged a community of broad

Mrs Randle has a long lasting influence on alumnae Sumudu Godagama and Caroline Sweeney. When they asked if they could arrange a charity walk for Cancer Research, Mrs Randle was supportive but wanted the girls to understand the fundamentals of campaigning. Over two years they attended meetings to understand the planning required to deliver an effective fundraising initiative. An experience that Sumudu has drawn on personally throughout her working life.

Head’s PA Carol Wood recalled: “Rosanne liked to refine and revise things in the most positive and efficient way. She encouraged staff to promote themselves and wanted everyone to feel part of the whole school, with everyone demonstrating and sharing the school values.

“She was well respected by parents. She sort to ensure that each girl had the best possible educational experience, balancing pastoral and academic, creating an atmosphere of cheerful 04

engagement. Rosanne did not approve of young people being put under great pressure and was adamant that 9 GCSEs were enough. She was vocal about the need for everyone to have time for peaceful reflection.”

Rosanne was an avid reader and renowned for sending educational articles to her senior management team to be keep them updated on educational developments. A pile of books would transfer each holiday to her home in France for reading.

Rosanne generously supported the Old Girls’ Association and enjoyed spending time with her daughters and grandchild.

Dr Elisabeth Slack concluded: “Without doubt, when she retired, DAHS was a successful and highly respected school, strong in all areas and a flourishing community in every respect. The school was extremely fortunate to have been led by someone of the highest calibre for such a crucial period.”

Rosanne died from cancer in March 2018.

Diana Willis 1939-2019 facilities of the school, including a new computer room, art rooms and the refurbishment of the boarding house, Wimborne Grange. Diana was keen for staff to prepare for their lessons without distraction and they benefitted from having two ‘quiet’ rooms. Diana re-established the House System and this became a very important part of school life as girls took part with great enthusiasm in House Competitions such as house singing, drama, sport and interesting challenges.

Born in Newark, Nottinghamshire in 1939 Diana attended Lilley and Stone High School before studying History at King’s College, London and gaining a Diploma in Education at Oxford.

Diana had a distinguished career. Her first teaching post was at Lady Eleanor Holles School, before being Head of History at Putney High School. By the age of 31, she was appointed Head of the Royal Naval School, Haslemere.

Diana joined BHS as Headmistress in 1987. During this time, she faced the challenges of the new National Curriculum and was responsible for a number of improvements in the

As a Headmistress, Diana was very much respected for her intelligence, determination and resilience. She was an able administrator with meticulous attention to detail.

Staff and pupils soon became aware of Diana’s love for dogs when her golden retriever, Ben, (a gift from pupils at the Royal Naval School) was seen sitting proudly with his mistress on a school photograph!

A former pupil remembers: “During my time at school, I had firsthand experience of Mrs Willis’ generosity and kindness. She was enormously supportive when my mother was recovering from cancer and offered an open door and a gentle and encouraging word, which remains forever firm in my memory.”

Diana was a very caring godmother.

She enjoyed exploring both Europe and the UK, and travelling to Australia to see her family.

Diana was married to John and on retirement, they moved to the Cotswolds before returning to Bedfordshire living in Aspley Guise and then Bedford. Diana sadly developed Motor Neurone Disease and showed tremendous courage in dealing with her illness.

Diana will be much missed but we can be inspired by the contribution she made through her career, her intelligence, her determination, her kindness and generosity to her pupils and colleagues, and her concern for her family.

Diane died from Motor Neurone Disease in February 2019.

BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL Emma Banks (1986) Congratulations to Emma, who was awarded the 2018 Music Industry Trusts Award in recognition of her contributions to the music industry.

Emma is Co-Head of the Creative Artists Agency (CAA), London, and is one of the most successful and respected music talent agents. Her current roster includes Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, Florence + The Machine, Kylie Minogue, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lorde.

Sara Bertin (née Pollock, 1970) Congratulations to Sara who was recently named Runner Up Business Woman of the Year (Large Companies) in the National Business Women’s Awards for 2018. Sara qualified as a Chartered Accountant and joined her family business, Shorefield Holidays, as their Financial Director in 1980.

Claire Clark (née Radford, 1994) Claire trained as a Speech and Language therapist at the University of Reading and moved to Aberdeen to work. After a career break to raise a family, Claire now works with adults who have acquired communication and swallowing impairments. She is currently studying for MSc in Dementia.

Connie Fan (BHS Boarder, 2011) Inspired by her Religious Studies classes, Connie pursued a Philosophy degree at King’s College, London. Upon graduation, she secured an analyst role at a California tech company. In 2018, she completed her law conversion, and is working towards her Legal Practice Course in London.

Joan Freeman (Former Head of Art, 1960-1971) Last year, Joan and her friend Clarissa Robinson showcased their work in St. Andrew’s Church, Bedford in a unique exhibition, A Friendship in Stitch which

displayed Joan’s meticulous original ecclesiastical designs for embroiderers, including those at St Andrew’s, York Minster, Norwich Cathedral, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Designed by Joan and embroidered by Clarissa together the exhibition formed a true testament of their close collaboration and friendship.

Elizabeth Gazeley (née Arnold, 1942) Elizabeth shared some memories from her school days; BGMS 1934-1936 and BHS 1936-1942: “I spent two happy years at the Girls’ Modern School. It was in the old building in the corner opposite St. Pauls. There was a strong smell of hops from the factory next door – not unpleasant! Miss Tonkin was Headmistress and we walked or cycled to Dame Alice for needlework lessons – it was a different Bedford then!”

Elizabeth Gilbertson (née McDonald, BHS 1999) Having completed a Masters in Aerospace Engineering Elizabeth joined the Royal Air Force as an Engineer Officer. She is passionate about encouraging girls to look towards the sciences and engineering and not to be afraid of pursuing something a little different.

Jacqueline Gooding (née Wilson, 1965; Head of Art 1970-1976) Jacqueline studied painting at Bath Academy of Art and gained the Art Teacher’s Certificate at Goldsmith’s before teaching at BHS. In recent years her work has been largely botanical, specialising in wild flowers and fungi. In 2015, she illustrated and co-wrote Stevington, The Natural History of a Bedfordshire Parish.

Francesca Hill (2009) Francesca has spent the last few years at the Foreign Office and Treasury, negotiating economic legislation in Brussels for the UK. She is currently seconded to the French École Nationale d’Administration, working to strengthen the UK’s bilateral relationship with France. Francesca first discovered her love of languages whilst at BHS, before reading French and Spanish at university. Francesca was President of the Cambridge Union in 2011.

Dr Sara Hornby (BHS Westlands, 1968) Sara currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she is the President of Global Strategic Solutions Inc. Sara’s passion for pyromania was ignited whilst undertaking her second BSc at a foundry. In a male dominated industry, her career started in the UK, included positions in research, metallurgy and sales before moving into the North American steel industry 1980. She has held senior posts at Air Liquide, Tenova Goodfellow, Midrex Technologies Inc., Linde Gases, lnteco and TMS International.

She received her PhD in Industrial Metallurgy from Sheffield Hallam University and is active in AIST; lnstituto Argentina de Sid­erurgia; Institute of Metal, Mining and Materials; and the American Foundry Society.

Haewon Kim (1998) After 19 years Haewon recently returned from South Korea to meet her school Guardian, Mrs Margaret Staddon.

They enjoyed a wonderful catch up and Haewon marvelled that their home seemed exactly as she remembered. She also managed to meet up with old friend Emma Fisher (2003) during her stay.

Dr Eleanor Reeds (2007)

Nicky Wright (née Sowerby, 1987)

Having studied at the University of Cambridge and worked at the Royal Academy of Dance, Eleanor received her PhD from the Department of English at the University of Connecticut in 2018 and is now Assistant Professor at Hastings College in Nebraska. She is widely published in a range of journals, including Victorian Poetry, TwentiethCentury Literature, and American Literary Realism.

In 2018, Nicky completed the London Classics Challenge in memory of her brother, Peter Sowerby (Bedford School, 1985), who sadly lost his battle to metastatic prostate cancer in 2018, aged 51. The London Classics Challenge comprises the London Marathon, swimming the Serpentine (2 miles) and the Prudential Ride 100.

Sarah Russell (née Harris, 1986) Congratulations to Sarah and the Tibbs Dementia Foundation who received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (the MBE for volunteer groups) in 2018. The charity helps local dementia sufferers to live the best life they can. Sarah is CEO and co-founder of the charity. www.tibbsdementia.co.uk

Bijal Shah (1998) Following university Bijal undertook a Masters in Educational Leadership and is now Principal of a primary school in Hemel Hempstead. She also spent time teaching in Abu Dhabi where she worked across a Trust of 40 regional schools, supporting the establishment of schools and school inspections.

Bijal reflects on BHS: “I arrived as a challenging pupil and probably sent my teachers round the bend! Mrs Mason-Patel always believed in me. I did not have any academic confidence until I met her. I did not know how to study and lacked learning strategies.

Mrs Mason-Patel supported me and her passion for teaching English was inspiring. She really was my first inspirational role model.”

Jo Turnbull (née Rome, 2004) Jo was amongst the first cohort of International Baccalaureate students at BHS. She went on to study Music with Early Childhood Studies at Canterbury Christ Church University. Jo worked with children in the charity sector and secondary schools, before going on to be a full-time happy mother. Jo looks back at her time at school with mixed emotions but believes it has made her an empathetic person who deeply cares about the struggles of others. Jo leads a fulfilled life and enjoys the freedom to choose the life she wishes with its small day to day joys!

Whilst her brother was receiving treatment, Nicky decided to raise money for cancer charities. She embarked on a series of ambitious ventures including cycling the 100k Ride the Night, swimming the Serpentine Mile and running the Great North Run. Nicky also undertook the challenge of swimming Lake Coniston with her brother, in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. In addition to this, Nicky took part in the the 75th Dambusters anniversary cycle ride in aid of the RAF Benevolent Fund, as a huge thank you to the RAF, who supported her schooling.

Assoc. Proff Dr Nurasyikin Yusof (1994) Originally from Malaysia, Nurasyikin has great memories of her A Level years at BHS and boarding at Quantocks. Following school, Nurasyikin studied Medicine at the University of Bristol and now works as a Haematologist.

DAME ALICE HARPUR Harriet Brettle (2010) Harriet completed a Maths degree at the University of Warwick and started her career in finance in London and New York, before rediscovering her passion for space/astronomy. Harriet completed a Masters in Planetary Science at the California Institute of Technology and joined a space startup who are 07

developing a commercial solution to the problem of space debris. Harriet has also set up her own company - Arroway Space - as a platform to connect and empower the future space economy. www.arrowayspace.com

Jackie Burns (née Shall, 2001) Jackie trained as a paediatric nurse and worked in the profession for ten years. After the arrival of her children she retrained as a health visitor. Jackie has been working as a health visitor for over three years now and absolutely loves her job.

Emma Burton (2010) Congratulations to Emma who received a Distinction in her Masters in Construction Cost Management and has recently become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and full Member of the RICS.

Naomi Charatan (2010) Naomi read Music at the University of Oxford, before embarking on the JET programme in Kochi, Japan, teaching English. Whilst in Japan, Naomi played with Kagamino Wind Orchestra and local funk bands. Last summer, Naomi organised a tri-continental choral concert in Bedford, involving the Ino Mixed Chorus, Bedford’s Eagle Choir, and singers from Bedford Choral Society, The Danesborough Chorus and Adelaide Philharmonia Chorus. The concert culminated in a joint performance of The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins. Naomi now teaches music in London.

Siȃn Cross (née Page, 1999) Siȃn trained to be a nurse working in London and Cambridgeshire.

Recently she took up the post of East of England Trauma Network Education Lead where she is responsible for the development of training and education in trauma care spectrum, from resuscitation to rehabilitation. Siȃn has also been a dedicated Army Reservist nurse for 15 year, included working in Afghanistan.

Sumudu is an Acupuncturist and the Principle Practitioner at Milton Keynes Acupuncture Clinic. Sumudu is also a highly experienced Ayurvedic consultant, specialising in fertility and womens’ health. She is also a Reiki Master and lecturer at the British Institute of Marmapuncture.

In 2016, Sumudu founded the RuRi Foundation (www.rurifoundation. org ), a non-profit organisation providing Therapy & Education for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse in British Asian Communities & Sri Lanka. Sumudu is passionate towards creating change and recently introduced Protective Behaviours to Sri Lanka with the assistance of UK senior social workers.

Following school, Mandeep studied Business and HR Management at the University of Hertfordshire. She now works for Highways England and has held several HR roles focusing on staff engagement. Mandeep recently married.

Kim directed the powerful production Forgotten at the Arcola Theatre, London. Written by Playwright Daniel York, Forgotten brings to light the 140,000 Chinese labourers who aided in Britain and the Allies WWI victory a century ago. The Stage said: “Pearce’s direction is empathetic, emphasising and rooting the interpersonal relationships at the heart of the piece.”

Sumudu lives in Milton Keynes with her husband and daughters.

Professor Lucie Green (2003) In January 2018, Lucie was appointed Chairwoman Board of Governors, UCL Academy and a member of the Academy Trust.

Charlie Jenkins (2012) Congratulations to Charlie who has recently started her MSc Learning and Teaching course at University of Oxford. Charlie will also continue to teach Science at Cardinal Newman School in Luton.

Margaret Hill (née Humphreys, 1957) Inspired by Miss Horn’s Geography lesson in 1951 about Australia, Margaret finally visited in 1969 and the following year she married an Australian. Margaret returns to England frequently and enjoys meeting her school friends, Mary Damon (née Ives), Valerie Taylor (née Spray), Margaret Humphrey (née Hill), Evelyn Burridge (née Jackson) and Anne Gentle (née Holyoak).

Celia Knight (1974) Congratulations to Celia who was awarded an MBE in the Birthday Honours list for services to the community of Nottingham. Celia works as a Neighbourhood Development Officer with Nottingham City Council and has dedicated 40 years to supporting and improving the lives of others. Celia also volunteers at a GP’s surgery and is involved in conservation for Notts Wildlife Trust.

Alice Marner (2010) Alice studied Drama and Theatre Arts at the University of Birmingham, where she was part of the Music Society Committee as Chamber Choir Manager and participated in various choirs. In 2012 she became Deputy Stage Manager for British Youth Opera and in 2013 stage managed the University of Birmingham’s Summer Festival Opera. She also worked at Milton Keynes Theatre as a technician before branching into television on production for Strictly Come Dancing, GPs Behind Closed Doors and The National Television Awards.

Currently she is working on Portrait Artist of the Year.

Tara McLay-Kidd (née Dayer-Smith, 1998) Tara took up golf aged 14, turning professional in 2009 and playing on the Womens’ professional golf circuits for a decade in Europe now in the USA on The Cactus Tour, The Canadian Tour, The Symmetra Tour and The LPGA. Tara founded Mushin Training, a luxury couples sports coaching camp in Nicaragua, designed to enable people to continue sports training and enhance their well-being in a beautiful setting.

Tara is also an accomplished artist and jewellery maker. Tara is married and lives in Oregon.

Annelise Milton (2009) Congratulations to Annelise on becoming a Captain in the British Army, Corps of Royal Engineers.

After gaining a Masters in Pharmacy from the University of Reading in 2013, Annelise attended the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in 2015. For the past two years, Annelise has been deployed in The Falklands Islands helping construct military accommodation. Now based in Chatham, Kent, she has recently been involved in officer recruiting.

Kim studied at the University of Warwick and trained on the Theatre Directing MFA at Birkbeck College, University of London. She was resident director on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time UK and Ireland tour 2014/15; and staff director on The Suicide at the National Theatre.

Linda Quantrell (1967) Linda lost touch with her very dear friend from her school days by the name of Lois Smith. Both left in 1967 when Linda went to work in London and Lois went to Goldsmiths. Lily Roberts-Phelps (2013) Lily read Philosophy at King’s College London before training as a barrister.

Lily was called to the Bar in October 2018 and was accompanied by her pet Pug, Reggie. Keen to ensure Reggie was suitably dressed for the occasion, Lily’s family had a special wig, gown and bands created for him so he could match his proud owner!

Katy (Katherine) Pilling (2005) Katy holds a Clinical Diploma in Medicines Management and a Master of Pharmacy from the University of East Anglia. Her career spans roles in clinical pharmacy, primary care commissioning and she is now an account manager in biologic therapies at Napp Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge. She continues to play the oboe and piano in her spare time.

Before embarking on her degree in Primary Education at Durham University, Isabelle spent a gap year working a ski season in France, before going to the US to work on a summer camp and travelling the west coast. At the end of her first year at university she visited India and taught English in several slum schools to widen her practise as a teacher.

After graduating from Oxford University’s Art School, she spent three years working in auction houses where she was continually inspired by the beautiful art and objects she was surrounded by daily, and she began learning modern calligraphy.

Gill Stark (1979) Gill is the Assistant Dean and Head of the School of Creative and Liberal Arts at Regent’s University London.

She recently published, The Fashion Show, a beautiful and invaluable guide to those currently working in fashion as well as those who are interested in following this path.

Gill obtained a first class degree in Art History and Fashion & Textiles from Bretton Hall (University of Leeds), before completing a postgraduate course in Business and Marketing at Cranfield School of Management. Gill gained an MA in Design Management and taught Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing, Fashion Business, Design Management and Cultural and Contextual studies in different universities including the London College of Fashion. She combined part-time lecturing with her work as a freelance designer for some years before being lured into academic management. Gill has been involved in creating exciting new degrees, establishing programmes in Paris and Florence, as well as other initiatives which enhance the education of students internationally.

Charlotte Taras (2009) Congratulations to Charlotte who has just achieved her PhD in Musicology from Cardiff University. Charlotte was a keen musician during her school day and credits the inspirational music education she received with setting her on her career path. She recently returned to school to enjoy one of the BGS Informal Lunchtime Concerts.

Sarah Turner (née Bolster, 1998) Sarah studied Geography at the University of Leeds before embarking on a career in marketing in the banking sector. Now based in Yorkshire with her family, she set up the Little Beau Sheep Company in 2015, which makes sheep inspired laundry products from British wool and lanolin. Sarah was a regional finalist in The Rural Business Awards North 2018/2019.

Louise Gardner (2013) Louise recently graduated from the University of Brighton with a 2:1 in Primary Education. In February Louise headed to Nepal on a 12 week educational project, which involved teaching English and living with a local family.

Since leaving BGS Juliet has been busy! Visiting Nepal with Raleigh International, travelling to Australia and undertaking work experience with Salamander Pumps in the UK. She has now gone to study a degree in Engineering and Creative Intelligence and Innovation, at the University of Technology in Sydney.

Bea Caldwell (2014) Bea read English Literature at Newcastle University before embarking on a Graduate Diploma in Law at the University of Law. She is now working for a boutique criminal defence firm, S & O Partnership, as a paralegal and lives in London.

Pippa is in her final year at Sheffield University studying History. Pippa, along with four fellow students, have created their own theatre company, Only Lucky Dogs, to produce original writing on unusual topics, Their first show Beaker’s Place was well received at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2018.

Following this success, Only Lucky Dogs have produced another piece of original writing Mack Ribbe is Going to Die – a dark comedic detective story!

Currently in her third year studying Law at Keele University, Ematice climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in September in aid of Rights of Women.

Ematice said, “It was an amazing experience and a challenge that took me out of her comfort zone, but one I will never forget.”

Congratulations to Rebecca, who was part of the 40,255 runners crossing the finishing line in the biggest and hottest London Marathon (April 2018) to date. At 23 years old she was the youngest woman on the elite start line, Rebecca placed an incredible 29th overall – joint male and female elite athletes, with a time of 02:39:37.

Freya is studying Agricultural Business and Management at the University of Nottingham. Now in her third year she is currently undertaking a placement year at Frontier Agriculture Ltd in Sandy.

Rights of Women provide support to women facing personal challenges.

Studying Law, Ematice has observed how important justice and equality can be, and how daunting legal procedures are.

Alexis Monks (2014) Congratulations to BGS Alumna Alexis Monks who was Highly Commended at the recent STEM Inspiration Awards.

The awards celebrate individuals and organisations who inspire young people in STEM subjects. Alexis was nominated for the Joan Sjovoll Award for STEM Leadership, which recognises anyone in a leadership role who has worked to foster an understanding of STEM within their organisation, inspiring and leading others to actively promote STEM education and careers.

Alexis completed a Computer Science degree at the University of Bristol.

Alexis works for Ocado as a Solutions Architect.

Rebecca commented: “The marathon was definitely the hardest and most mentally taxing race I’ve ever done, but I was really happy to turn all the training into a good performance and soak up the incredible atmosphere on the streets!

“It was really nice that Mrs Howlett (Deputy Head of PE) was out on the course too, as she was the one who packed me along to Bedford AC as a kid in the first place!”

Aleysha Paymaster and Rebecca Hutchings (2015)

As an elected leader, trustee and director of a subsidiary company, she is an active participant in the financial and strategic planning of a 900 staff organisation which has an £11 million annual turnover supporting the 27,000 students at Sheffield.

Sarah is extremely proud to be a part of Sheffield SU history in making up the first ever all-female officer team.

“Working in a team of eight women is something I could already relate to from my experiences in the GLG at school. I firmly believe that it was the sporting and leadership opportunities that BGS provided me with, that gave me the confidence and skills to run for this prestigious role.”

Sasha completed a degree in International Marketing from the University of Westminster, and is working in business development for an American software company called Salesforce.com. Salesforce have been voted the best place to work in the world by Fortune 9 years in a row.

Alice Heale (2013) Alice graduated in the summer from Loughborough University with a First in Social Psychology. The degree included a placement year working in HR with Walt Disney. Alice is now working in the City at UK merchant banking group, Close Brothers.

Rebecca read English Literature at Durham University and has taken up a specialist recruitment post in London.

Aleysha is also in London, having taken up a graduate training role with Ernst and Young. She read Economics at the University of Nottingham.

Both girls felt they were very happy with their course choices, and felt that the pastoral care that they received at BGS really helped them adapt to university life.

Meaning ful Mentorship We recognise that as our students grow, they need guidance and advice from many different influences to ensure that they develop self-confidence and empathy.

Whilst the role of teachers and parents in helping the girls develop a strong sense of self is crucial, we also place value on the important role that both peers and wider members of the community can play, whether that is older students, health professionals, careers advisors, support staff or alumnae.

Ms Elaine Teale, Deputy Head Pastoral, explained: “Our community is grounded in respectful and supportive relationships, both between girls and staff but also between the student body and colleague to colleague. We want our girls to understand that in life there are always people who will be willing to engage and listen to you, who will support you in achieving your goals and aspirations.

“They need to recognise that at times we are not always the best judge of our

own abilities and decisions, and it is important to feel empowered to ask for help from someone more experienced.

It should not be seen as a weakness, but a strength, as through the process you grow and develop skills, which can be drawn upon when faced with a similar scenario.

“We aim to provide girls and staff with an environment where they learn how to manage different types of relationships in a respectful and supportive manner.

I place great value on ‘mentorship’, in helping all of us grow. The beauty of a mentor relationship is that it is a two way stream; both the mentee and mentor have the chance to gain valuable growth.” Added Ms Teale.

Mentorship can be defined as a relationship in which a more experienced or knowledgeable person helps guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. It helps raise aspiration and self- confidence, allowing the mentee develop self-belief by helping them to define a goal through encouraging them to develop the right questions and challenging their thoughts. For example, Sixth Formers may mentor Year 9s as they prepare to make their GCSE options, this could help Year 9 students think more clearly about the decision making process, whilst helping the Lower Sixth students

reflect on how they can use their experiences to help others.

“This year we have teamed Lower Sixth with Form Groups from Years 7 to 11; current staff are mentoring new staff; and some of our senior staff are involved in mentoring staff at other schools, who are aiming to move into leadership roles. This creates a culture where a commitment to improvement and growth is valued.” added Ms Teale.

Over the last year, the School has also developed and piloted a new exciting mentoring programme involving alumnae mentoring students.

Mrs Kate Whitlock, Chair of the Alumnae Association who worked with the school to establish the Alumnae Mentoring Programme explained: “A mentor can help you to accurately evaluate your skills, identify blind spots and formulate plans for improvement.”

“This is an invaluable opportunity for Lower Sixth girls as they embark on decisions about their next steps to the wider world. They may not have the confidence or experience to feel they can make decisions and the mentors are there to guide them on this journey.

In addition it builds connections between the girls and the Alumnae and demonstrates the wealth of experience, and the role models, available to them

as part of the wider BGS community as they move beyond school.”

For the pilot scheme, four students were matched with four mentors who met twice a term over nine months, in addition to phone calls and email exchanges. During this time, the students gained insight on how to build a professional relationship and worked towards defined goals, which had been jointly discussed, and then formulated into a mutually agreed development plan. The mentor continued to offer support, challenging and encouraging the student for the duration of their mentoring relationship.

The four mentees all agreed that being part of the scheme had been incredibly useful and a hugely beneficial experience, helping them in a plethora of ways. They all felt that having an independent voice from an adult who was not a parent or a teacher brought a fresh perspective to issues and ideas.

The girls also appreciated the truly bespoke aspect of the programme, they were given the space to be self-reflective and think as an individual about the direction of their goal, and had the time to truly focus on self-improvement. The mentors helped them see the progress they had made and enabled them to build confidence in their instincts and abilities to make sound judgements.

Upper Sixth Student Bronwyn Tagg reflected that: “The Mentoring Programme was a hugely beneficial experience during which I was guided

to writing a sophisticated personal statement for my UCAS application; my mentor provided a starting point of a solution, a sound board for my ideas and adjustments as well as a reassuring voice of confirmation having finished my personal statement.”

O pra h W inf re y Importantly the girls also felt that it had been a great platform to help them to learn how to handle a different style of a professional relationship, in a safe understanding and supportive environment. They commented that this had helped take away some of the nervousness they felt about entering a stage in their lives, when they would need to work along-side more experienced professionals.

The girls all agreed that they would readily take part in mentoring schemes again and would encourage others to

take part in such programmes.

Mrs Whitlock also explained how rewarding being a mentor can be: “Mentors can expect to achieve personal satisfaction from helping and guiding a younger individual at a key point in their life. Mentoring also offers mentors the time and space to reflect on and develop their own professional inter-personal and communication skills. By introducing the girls to the concept whilst they are at school I hope it will encourage them to look for opportunities to be part of professional mentoring schemes both at a university and in the workplace, they are a valuable tool for continued learning and development.”

The success of the pilot now sees the Alumnae Mentorship Programme being expanded this year to eight pairs and in time, the School aspires to establish an Alumnae to Alumnae Mentorship scheme.

Ms Teale concluded: “We are preparing our students for the next stages of their lives, mentoring provides a perfect platform to introduce them to skills that they can use in the outside world whilst, providing them with support to help them recognise their potential and aspirations. Mentorship plays a valuable role amongst a huge range of tools to provide the girls the chance to grow in a strong and supportive environment.”

Many of our talented and inspiring alumnae were included in this impressive exhibition, which showcases the role of women in helping to shape Bedford - Professor Lucie Green (DAHS 1993), Emma Sparrow (née Felton, BHS 1997), Winifred Fowler (née Hull, BGMS 1928), Mary Dickey (née Coller, Former BHS staff), Ella Wentworth Dyne Steel (BHS 1926), Dora Carrington (BHS 1910), Jean Muir CBE (DAHS 1945), Margaret Greenshields (BHS 1920), Joyce Godber (BHS 1925), Theresa Stannard (BHS 1947), Lady Gladys Chatterjee OBE (née Broughton, BHS 1904), Mary Milligan (BHS 1901), Margaret Partridge (BHS 1911), Mary Stewart (BHS 1903), Maud Forrester-Brown (BHS 1904) and Dame Ethel Shakespear DBE (née Wood, BHS 1890).

Victoria Partridge (BHS 1997) was part of the team who curated the stunning exhibition.

The memory of BHS Alumna, the watercolour artist Theresa Sylvester Stannard (1898-1947) has been acknowledged with a blue plaque on Spenser Road, Bedford. Theresa’s father, Henry John Sylvester Stannard, with whom she shared a studio, was also commemorated with a blue plaque at a neighbouring property.

Celebrating the long tradition of debating at the Harpur Trust Schools, Shuna Mitchell (BHS 1967-78) and Christopher McGinty (1974-79 BS) spearheaded a reunion debate to mark the 40th Anniversary of the Union Society’s Presidents’ Debate (Saturday 22nd April, 1978).

Alumnae, guests and students gathered in the Great Hall at Bedford School to discuss the motion: ‘This house believes in the unfettered freedom of speech’. Chris McGinty chaired, (he also Chaired the original debate), whilst Daniel Moylan (former President of the Oxford Union), and Joshua Forrester BMS student) spoke very eloquently for the Proposition about the need for unfettered free speech. Tim Skeet (BS 1972-77) and Isobel Horsfall (BGS pupil) both spoke passionately about the importance of ensuring that there are certain limitations on what people can say, with the Opposition finally winning the day. Miles Young (BS 1973-76) gave the Vote of Thanks before guests and friends enjoyed dinner.

Bedford Regatta, May 2018 The 154th Bedford Regatta brought friends and families of the heritage schools and BGS to the riverbank to cheer on the BGS crews. This annual event is a popular occasion and we welcome alumnae dropping by for a scone and glass of Pimms.

Work The Room, June 2018 The Guild celebrated the rich heritage of Art at BHS and the guest of honour Ann Gardner (1982), shared her experience of life as an artist.

The occasion included displays of artwork and archive material from the BHS community, including Chrissy Thirlaway (1967), Jacky Gooding (née Wilson, 1965), Gaynor Maher (née Rodwell, 1982), Wendy Norris (Former Head of Art), Felicity De Vries (née Andrew, 1979), Shuna Mitchell (1978), Dora Carrington, Edward Nightingale, Ulrika Pehrson, Margaret Lanaway (1913), Kate Parbury (1919) and Theresa Sylvester Stannard (1919).

A morning service led by Guild Chaplain, Mr Paul Fricker, was followed by a delicious lunch and tours of the Senior School.

As part of the celebration, The Guild sponsored a Junior School Art Competition, under the theme of Strong, Empowered Women. The calibre of the work was very high and Guild Chair, Jane Leech (née McKendrick, 1982), and Anne Gardner were tasked with choosing the winning entries.

This year’s reunion was particularly special as we hosted a lunch for the Class of 1958 and 25 old girls gathered to celebrate 60 years since leaving school. It was a particularly poignant occasion for Ann Wilson (née Bramford), it was her first visit back to school and she and her husband joined the lunch as part of their wedding anniversary celebrations. Sadly, Ann passed away in November. We were lucky to have a beautiful autumnal day and guests toured the Senior School and garden, led by a group of enthusiastic Sixth Formers.

Campaign Challenge, January 2019

As part of the launch of the Lower Sixth service project, the Campaign Challenge, we welcomed Sarah Rastrick (née Murnal, DAHS 1992) to school to offer valuable insights and inspiration to the girls as they planned their campaigns. Sarah has a wealth of experience in communications and is currently Communications Lead at Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust – the charity for Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Births & Marriages Bedford High School Dr Alexandrina (Caroline) Buchanan (1987) Alex (Caroline) Buchanan gave birth to a son, Angus Rufus Worth, on 21 February 2018. Also a belated announcement of the marriage of Alex to Lyndon Worth, on 7 September 2013.

Elizabeth Jane Beales (née Menday, 1998) Elizabeth Jane Menday and Robert Andrew Beales were married at The Great Barn at Aynho on 29th March 2018. Lovely that a number of BHS girls were at the wedding.

Hannah Ford (née Jones, 2009) Congratulations to Hannah Jones and Rhys Ford (BS) who were married at St. John the Baptist church, in Eversholt on 7th July 2018.

Deaths

Bedford High School Ann Dove (née Ireson, 1947) Ann passed away peacefully in her sleep in December 2017, after a short stay in a care home. Ann had become increasingly poorly in the last few months. Ann will be much missed by all her family, as well as by her many friends.

Georgina Hargreaves (née Farley, BHS Quantocks 1953-1960) Georgina sadly died in November 2016 from lung cancer. Georgina was a boarder in Quantocks and played both tennis and hockey at school. With a degree in languages from London University, she worked in Sweden teaching English. After marrying Nick she became a wonderful mother to Louisa, Geoff and Amy.

Caroline Medley (née Sales, 1986) Caroline passed away in September 2018 after a long battle with cancer.

She joined Bedford School in 2004 as an Economics and Business Studies teacher, and in 2007 took over the Charities Committee. Caroline was Instrumental in supporting the fundraising efforts of the boys and was an ambitious fundraiser herself, running four London marathons.

Caroline leaves behind a husband and three sons.

Daphne Newman (née Hawkings, 1938) Daphne sadly passed away in September 2017.

(Elizabeth) Anne Shortland-Jones (née Young, 1950) Elizabeth sadly passed away in November 2018 aged 86.

June Slatter MBE (née Clark, 1956) June passed away in October 2017 following a long illness. June started working life at Texas Instruments, she married Mike, an architect, and had three daughters. June and Mike, in partnership with another couple, brought and ran Hotel Maes y Neuadd, in Talsarnau, Wales. It was a thriving business winning various awards. June was very involved in local affairs and eventually awarded an MBE for service to Welsh tourism.

Gladys (Jill) Woodley (née Lawrence, 1932) Gladys passed away in 2017, just short of her 103rd birthday. After leaving BHS, she became a journalist for the Daily Sketch and the Daily Telegraph, interviewing amongst others Amy Johnson, Barbara Hutton, and JFK’s sister Katherine Kennedy. Before the war, she reported on the World Gliding Championships in Germany where she took to the skies with one of Hitler’s female pilots, Hanna Reitch.

She raised a family, and was the first lady major of Higham Ferrers Borough Council and the first lady Alderman. A keen golfer she was the ladies captain and first (and only) Lady President of Rushden Golf Club. She travelled widely and gave many talks on her many experiences.

Her daughter Alison Oberman (née Woodley, 1964) and niece Patricia Woodley (1962) also attended BHS.

Deaths

Dame Alice Harpur School Marjorie Banks (née Howard, 1956) Marjorie passed away in May 2018 following pancreatic cancer aged 78.

Marjorie leaves her husband Phil, two children and three grandchildren.

Marjorie was an active member of the Old Girls’ Association.

Jeanette Beale (former teacher) Jeanette died in October 2018 after a battle with cancer. Jeanette was a former teacher of Mathematics at Dame Alice Harpur School before moving to Bedford School to become Head of Mathematics in 2005. Jeanette has been an inspiration to generations of Harpur Trust students.

Jean Callaway (former teacher) Jean died in January 2019 aged 93 following a lengthy illness. Jean was a teacher of English from 1968 to 1985.

During her time at DAHS, Jean will be remembered for teaching at all levels throughout the school. Jean was active in all aspects of school life including the Careers Department, acting Head of English and Head of a Sixth Form year group.

Jane Cohen (née Slaffer, 1962) Jane passed away in November 2018, aged 74. Jane built the Alumni Office of the University of Surrey and was a regular volunteer at Wisley RHS Gardens and the National Gardens Scheme. She is sorely missed by her wide circle of friends, her husband, brother, son, daughter and four grandchildren.

Mrs Ann Gray (DAHS Matron 1971-1999)

NOTE ON LEGACIES AND DONATIONS

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the recent death of Ann Gray, ‘Matron’. Ann began looking after the DAHS girls’ in 1971 and retired in December 1999. She dispensed paracetamol, if you had a headache or a bucket if you felt sick but most importantly she was a haven, a listening ear, and a confidante. She was involved in both the physical and mental health of the pupils.

We have received a number of enquiries from Alumnae members requiring clarification concerning legacy donations or bequests.

Ann was a talented flower arranger and produced beautiful displays for the School. In retirement she continued with her flower arranging, becoming a teacher and judge and travelling the world to use her talents. Her funeral was well attended by many Old Girls and retired DAHS Staff, a symbol of how admired and loved Ann was, and she will be missed.

Miss Gwen Tucker Gwen passed away in March 2018 aged 102 years. Gwen was born and raised in Bedford where she lived all her life.

At school Gwen enjoyed hockey and regularly invited boarders home for tea with her family.

Following school Gwen began working for the Harpur Trust School as a Fees Administrative Officer, looking after bursaries and assisted places.

Ann Wilson (née Bramford, 1956) Passed away peacefully in November 2018 aged 79. Always horse mad, Ann worked at the Equine Research Centre at Newmarket.

As neither of the heritage schools exist as schools it is no longer possible to leave funds to these organisations.

Please be advised that if you had previously made arrangements to leave bequests to either Dame Alice Harpur School or Bedford High School, they would not automatically be transferred to Bedford Girls’ School.

If you had intended to leave a bequest to Dame Alice Harpur School or Bedford High School and now wish it to come to Bedford Girls’ School, you need to specifically amend your Will to stipulate that change in beneficiary.

We would also suggest that you take legal advice before making any amendments to your wishes to ensure that your wishes are stated.
