Away from the sport fields our focus this year has turned to upgrading our Drama and Dance Wing. We have refurbished the studio, to create a stunning black box space and a beautiful glass walled dance studio, supported by a box office style lobby where guests can mingle and students can use as a breakout space. We have also invested in state of the art technology in lighting and sound so that the girls can hone their craft both as performers and technicians. Our first major productions in the new surrounding have been DNA and a ground breaking all female version of The Lord of the Flies, both have set the bar high for the future of BGS drama.

cannot believe it is a year since I last wrote, time does fly and so much has happened.

The School continues to flourish; it is a vibrant environment full of a passion for learning and determination to succeed, and succeed they do. 2017 saw our best academic results to date, recording an outstanding 72% A/A*grades at GCSEs. Our International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) and A Level results were impressive with a combined 50% A/A*. As we continue to embrace the IB ethos throughout the School, I am constantly impressed by the level of deep learning, enquiry and reflection from the girls. It is these attributes, along with superb examinations results, which will truly set them apart from their counterparts in the wider world. I am confident that BGS girls of today will go out, like their peers from our heritage schools, and make a difference to the world around them.

I am pleased that so many alumnae are taking the time to get in touch and become involved in BGS. The part you all play as mentors and role models is so important and we are delighted that you come and share your experiences and expertise with us. This year we have launched a trial of our first ever mentorship programme, it is still in the early stages but we have matched up four mentors with four Sixth Form students. I am extremely thankful for those involved and I am sure it will be a rewarding experience for both students and mentors; we will look to widen the scheme in the years to come. We want our Sixth Formers to be looking outwards and believe that having the opportunity to work so closely with alumnae helps them focus on achieving their aspirations. We now have an established calendar of Alumnae events which I hope you can attend. You are always welcome in School, do get in touch if you would like to host a reunion or pop in for a visit. We love hearing your news and sharing your successes.

On the sports field we continue to excel and are now ranked in the top 10 of all independent schools (boys, girls and co-ed) for our sporting achievements. The fact that we are ranked 2nd in the country for girls’ day schools is testament to the incredible depth of expertise in our PE team, under the outstanding leadership of Jane Axford (known to many BHS alumnae). The commitment, skills and passion that the PE department build in the girls are extraordinary. Sport has always played a big part in the history of the schools and it is always great to welcome so many alumnae to sporting events. Developing a love of sport at school creates bonds and friendships that last forever.

I would like to welcome Charlotte Bryden (2008) to the Alumnae Committee as our new Treasurer and Joanna Hosseini (née Smith, 1989) and Hannah Leggott (1998) the BHS Guild Committee. This year has also seen, very sadly, the passing of two sporting greats, the legendary Joan Gibson, Head of PE at BHS (1951-1972), and the much loved BHS and BGS rowing coach Mick Deards (2003-2017). We have been incredibly touched by the number of you who have been in touch to share their memories of Joan and Mick; it demonstrates how inspiring teachers make a difference to our lives. Our annual Old Girls’ Lacrosse Match was held as a tribute to Miss Gibson and she would have been proud of the quality of play; and we are currently fundraising for a new boat in Mick’s name, The Mick, so we hope that their memories will live on.

YOUR SCHOOL , MY SCHOOL Karen Ayms (née Mossman) is a former student of Dame Alice Harpur School leaving in 1988. Karen has 17 years’ experience working as Building Services Design Engineer, Low Carbon Consultant and Energy Assessor with the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers. Karen is also a STEM ambassador and is passionate about getting more women involved in Science. Devon Ward is our current Head Girl and joined Bedford Girls’ School in Year 7, 2011. She is currently studying Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Psychology for A Level and has aspirations to study Medicine at university.

In this interview both consider their time at school and how it has helped shape their lives so far.

Do you remember your first day at school?

If you had your time at school again, what would you do differently?

KA: I remember being worried about knowing where the toilets were. I was in the Preps with Miss Todman when the Prep building was on the main site, in the corner by the rose garden. I recall liking the bottles of milk at break as they were cold, and the iced buns for 10p.

KA: I would worry less about what others thought of me and concentrate on my studies. Friendships are important but they change over time and those you start off with in Year 1 may not be your best friends in Sixth Form. Worry less, put things in perspective and smile. Find hobbies, these could help indicate where your passions lie and where your undiscovered talents are. I believe that if you have a sight of what you want to do for a career, there is a target and meaning to your studies. There is then a motivation and sense of achievement to studying. I wish I had spent more time looking into different careers to find my vocation and then I would have found a reason and motivation much earlier in my education.

DW: Yes - I got lost! I was dropped off early and wandered aimlessly around the grounds trying to find a particular building. The Head Girl found me, showed me around the School, then helped me get to my classroom. It was a really interesting first experience of the School, because I was so nervous but it turned out that the first person I met was one of the nicest people ever! It made me so excited to start that year and it was a great first impression.

What was your favourite subject and why?

DW: I would revise a lot earlier in the school year and use more songs - learning history to the tune of Don’t you want me was one of the most useful bits of revision I’ve ever done!

KA: I didn’t have a favourite subject, I enjoyed all subjects at one point or another depending on the topic. Mrs Perry helped me find the joy of Mathematics, I never thought at the time how much use I would get out of Pythagoras theorem and trigonometry as well as formula transpositions. I enjoyed Geography topics of weather and rivers, which are inherent in my current line of work, as rivers are a graphic example of fluid dynamics and buildings function differently in different weather conditions.

How has school shaped your values and aspirations? KA: I now realise what a great opportunity and privilege it was to go to Dame Alice Harpur School. It took a few years to understand that I may not have been in the top sets at school but when released into the wider world, I was in nearer to the top than I had appreciated. This gave me the confidence to speak to anyone at any level, to speak out and have a ‘can do’ attitude.

DW: When I joined, my favourite subject was Chemistry. It offered a nice balance between being challenging and interesting, it was an intriguing subject to study. Chemistry has remained my favourite, although it’s challenging and sometimes downright difficult, but somehow it has become more fun at the same time - Sciences are tricky that way.

DW: It has helped me to value teamwork, with the many activities within School having a theme of unity at the centre, whether that be in lessons doing projects, or in co-curricular and being part of a sports team. However, the School has also helped me to improve my independent learning by shaping my imagination in a way that now contributes to and improves my approach to learning. In terms of aspirations, the key thing BGS has taught me is to never step aside and take second best if it’s easier. Continually work hard to get what you want, for the pure fact that you know you enjoy it.

What/who inspired you to study the Sciences? KA: I don’t think I was inspired by anyone specifically, I really didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do. I didn’t excel in any particular area. My reports had a familiar tone of “could do better”. I took Chemistry and Physics options for O Level. I dropped Chemistry and concentrated on Physics for A Level, which I found more logical to learn and is now the basis of my career.

If you could sum up your time at school in three words what would they be? KA: If you asked my mum this she would say immediately could try harder. I’d prefer; ‘Drifted without focus’.

DW: I never really had anyone who inspired me to study the Sciences - both of my parents and now my step-mum all have Science related careers. I found more inspiration within the subjects themselves, each of them providing ample amounts of intrigue and challenge.

DW: ‘Making a difference’ - not just an impact on the School, but the people and also myself. My time here has not only shaped the person I’ve turned out to be, but also the woman I want to be in the future.

BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL Rebecca Burgoine (2012) Rebecca gained 1st in Physiotherapy from University of Leicester. Rebecca is a Senior Physiotherapist at Bedford Hospital, managing a team of eight staff.

Jenifer Cook (née Garofalo, 2011) Jenifer has relocated to Bedford with her husband Philip, setting up their photography business, The Bedford Photography Studio specialising in studio and wedding photography.

Professor Susan Fairweather-Tait (née Fox) Westlands, (1967) Susan has been elected a member of the American Society for Nutrition Class of Fellows, a fantastic achievement as very few non-US citizens are awarded this honour. Susan’s research includes the development of pioneering stable isotope techniques to investigate the bioavailability and metabolism of iron, zinc, copper, calcium and selenium in humans. Susan attended Queen Elizabeth College London (now King’s College) to study Food Science (BSc 1973) and Nutrition (MSc 1974), obtaining a PhD in 1978 and a DSc in 1996. Susan’s career included working for Beecham Products and the Institute of Food Research in Norwich, where she was Head of the Nutrition Department. In 2007 she was appointed Professor of Human Nutrition in the Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia.

Ruth Hogan (1979) Studied English and Drama at Goldsmiths College, University of London. She had a successful career in local government before a car accident left her unable to work full-time and gave her the push to start writing. In 2012 Ruth got cancer. When the chemotherapy kept her up at night she passed the time writing resulting in her

first novel, The Keeper of Lost Things, published in 2017. The book won several awards, including the Richard and Judy Book Club pick and enjoyed seven weeks at No 1 on the Amazon Kindle chart. Her second novel, The Particular Wisdom of Sally Red Shoes, will be published in May and is set in locations based around Bedford. www.ruthhogan.co.uk

Nesta Jones (1943-1961) Former teacher of Latin, Nesta turned 100 in September 2017.

Maria Lamburn (1979) Maria is a Composer, Performer and Complementary Therapist www.marialamburn.com Last September, Maria rowed in the Great River Race in London, for the Royal Welsh Yacht Club (RWYC) Celtic Longboat team, achieving 86th out of 323 boats. Maria regularly rows on the Menai Straits and sails with members of the RWYC and other enterprises. Maria would be delighted to welcome alumnae interested in visiting RWYC boathouse in Caernarfon.

Liz Macfie (2003) Following a Masters in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Birmingham, Liz has forged a career as a mechanical engineer, before moving into technology and is passionate about women working in tech. Liz is a senior data scientist within CENTURY Tech, making artificial intelligence technology which analyse how we learn, providing deeper insights to teachers.

Whizz (Isabelle) Middleton (née Shaw, 1998) Whizz was reminded of school recently when she saw students from BGS on a Geography trip to the Barton Hills, which is part of her farm, and remembered doing the same years 04

ago! Whizz has been working back at the farm since 2005, developing a successful range of rapeseed oil products including Mrs Middleton’s cold-pressed Rapeseed Oil. www.mrsmiddleton.co.uk

Sally Mitchell (née Keane 1962) Sally left BHS with the distinction of being first girl ever to fail all her ‘O’ levels! Horse mad and a chance visit to a sporting pictures sale at Sotheby’s inspired her to develop a business dealing in sporting paintings, limited edition prints and cards (Sally Mitchell Fine Arts Ltd). She went on to write The Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists, which much to her amusement, was on her son’s reading list at university. Having run the business for nearly half a century, Sally had the opportunity to buy a large dilapidated coaching inn, and following extensive restoration it opened as the UK’s only museum dedicated to the horse, housing antiques, galleries and workshops. Sally regularly lectures at symposiums, and is part of an international delegation to Russia consulting on a museum of the horse being created in St Petersburg. Rio Motoyama (2009) Studied Sociology at Doshisha University in Kyoto and worked for an organisation called SIED, connecting exchange students with locals. Now in Osaka she is working in international sales for Artec, specialising in the educational programmable robot, ArtecRobo. Rio would be delighted to welcome alumnae visiting Japan.

Gillian Pollock (1953) Gillian’s time in Quantocks gave her lifelong friends. In 1998, the group held their first reunion hosted in Hobart, Tasmania by Sue (née Lyon) and Tony Mount when six of them, gathered from

New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and by phone from Italy, for a reunion dinner at the home of Margaret (née Green) and John Langford in North Tasmania. A few years later they met again at the home of Jane (née Lloyd) and Felix Jones in Sydney then at Anne (née Sutcliffe) and Ray Jone’s home in Cracoar, also NSW. Sadly, Liz Briggs in South Africa has since died.

Helena Prettyman (2012) Graduated in 2015 from the University of Nottingham, in English with creative writing. Helena has worked at Milton Keynes Theatre, a SEND Assistant at Redborne Upper School and a Speech and Drama teacher at Bedford School. In 2017, Helena wrote and produced her debut short film. Hollow explores the grief of losing a child and the repercussions that ensue. Currently in post-production it will be launched on the film festival circuit next year. Helena continues to play lacrosse and is co-captain of Hitchin Ladies Lacrosse Club.

Nicola Reddy (née Oakley, 1999) Nicola studied law at the University of Manchester and completed her legal practice course at Nottingham Law School. She spent 13 years at Pinsent Masons LLP, as a commercial real estate lawyer. Nicola and her family relocated to Bedfordshire a couple of years ago and she began juggling work with raising her children. Nicola has recently left law to join her husband’s business, developing maths apps and educational products, including the well known app, Times Tables Rockstars www.ttrockstars.com

Philippa Tredget (2010)

Philippa led a team who were placed finalists in the Women in Defence UK Awards and spearheads the Women in STEM Committee at Lockheed Martin.

Neena read Law at the LSE and qualifyied as a solicitor. A career change five years ago saw her retrain as an English teacher, she now teaches in a secondary school in London.

Studied at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) where she specialised in the piano and persuaded RAM to let her do a bespoke course with elements from both Drama and Singing. Susan went to work at the BBC, first in TV drama and music before moving to the English Teaching Department in World Service Radio, with responsibility for Drama and Children’s programming.

Kirstie works in film and television, including as an extra in Kingsman II, Justice League, The Crown and a pixie in Drunk Histories. She has also worked as a production assistant for Dene Films and Lipsync Post. Kirstie is currently reading Natural Sciences at The Open University.

Lilla To (2012) Lilla read Geography at The University of Birmingham before a year in China, reading Chinese Language and Culture at Shandong University of Finance and Economics. Lilla is undertaking a Masters in International Relations and Security at The University of Buckingham to pursue a career in the Diplomatic Service. Lilla is Vice Captain at the Milton Keynes Lacrosse Club.

Chantal Webster (née Woodhouse, 1989) Chantal was amongst the cello section of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at this year’s BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. She is part of a group of eminent cellists produced by BHS.

DAME ALICE HARPUR SCHOOL Dominique Alexander (2010) Dominique works as a freelance cook, food stylist and writer and has just published her first cookbook, Jar Food (Pavilion Books). www.dominiqueeloise.com

Clare Blampied (née David, 1981) Studied BEng Chemical Engineering at the University of Sheffield, joining Lockheed Martin in 2014 as an Ergonomics Design Engineer, working with the British Army to optimise the internal design of the Warrior CSP vehicle. Philippa is studying for an MSc Ergonomics.

Susan Cokyll (1960)

Clare has used her A level specialisms in English, Home Economics and Textiles, to forge a successful career in the food industry. She is Managing Director at Sacla and credited with bringing pesto to the UK!

Clarissa is studying for a PhD at The University of Oxford in Musculoskeletal Sciences. She coxed the Oxford Ladies second boat (known as Osiris) on Boat Race day 2017.

Susanne Edwards (née Ball, 1961)

Runs a B&B in Ravensden. She was delighted to welcome the daughter of Anne Engroos (née Chase, 1961) from the US last summer where they spent a happy afternoon reminincing.

Rachel Forster (née Allen, 2004) Read Maths, Accounting and Financial Management at Loughborough University, joining the PwC graduate program to train as a Chartered Accountant. Her career has included roles at the ITE Group and Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey, before joining NBCUniversal as Group Financial Controller. Rachel was selected for the company’s Financial Management Leadership Program. A three-year executive development program that moves participants around the business, she has had posting to LA and Rio. Currently based in New York as part of the Financial Planning TV group, she is soon relocating to England as Finance Director for NBC Universal’s international business.

Liane Fulford (2011) Studied Psychology and Philosophy at the University of Nottingham, and then completed a TEFL to teach in China. She recently worked in Malawi for International Service, as part of the ICS scheme, managing a group of young volunteers to facilitate a sustainable project designed to empower and educate young people. In 2018, she starts work at Global Vision International, in Thailand.

Professor Lucie Green (1993) Congratulations to Lucie on receiving the 2017 Lise Meitner Medal and prize for distinguished contributions to public outreach in Science. Lucie’s recent appearances include New Scientist Live, Astrofest and the Cheltenham and Hay Festivals. Lucie’s also published 15 Million Degrees: A Journey to the Centre of the Sun.

Claudia Hammond (1989) Congratulations to Claudia, journalist and presenter of Radio 4’s All in the Mind, on receiving the British Academy’s Presidents Medal, in recognition of her work on well-being and mental health.

Catherine Harris (née Dawson, 1993) Catherine works in radiotherapy as a clinical scientist at The Christie Hospital, Manchester. She lives in the Peak District with her family.

Charlie Jenkins (2012) Charlie graduated with a PGCE from Oxford and started teaching Science at Cardinal Newman School, Luton. Whilst at Oxford, Charlie held down two part time jobs (Deputy Chapel Verger and Visitor Liaison Officer, New College), and had an academic paper published by her college.

Patricia had a lengthy career as a PE teacher, including a period at Margaret Beaufort Middle School. Pat and her husband retired to Northumberland, enjoying walking, golfing, biking and travelling. Pat’s daughters and grandchildren keep her busy!

Since retiring Jill has worked as a Volunteer Reserve Guide at the RSPB, and recently reflected on the experience of volunteering: “Leading walks, visits, meeting visitors and volunteering, I’ve learned such a lot. The RSPB Lodge has changed over the last decade. The reserve has grown in size, and I’ve witnessed the felling of the pine plantation to return the area to priority habitat, lowland heath, now mostly covered in heather, it’s a wonderful sight. Also, the reserve has created ponds for rare natterjack toads, which we survey yearly. Contributing time in a varied role, my journey continues to give me a sense of wellbeing and enthusiasm for the great outdoors.”

Florence Sturt-Joy (née Sturt-Hammond, 2008) After graduating with a 1st in History and two performance prizes from the University of Leeds, Florence started a jewellery business selling handmade designs based in the jewellery quarter of Birmingham. Florence is also a freelance copywriter and has a ‘day job’ in marketing at Birmingham Hippodrome. Florence recently married and she and her husband made their wedding rings. www.tidingofmagpies.com

Dr Anna Ploszajski (2009)

Cathryn read Mathematics at Oxford. She now works as a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology and Statistics, King’s College London. An advocate of STEM careers, Cathryn specialises in the application of statistics to genetics.

Emilina graduated in 2017 from the University of Bedfordshire with a 1st in Psychology Criminology Counselling and Therapy. She is taking time for travel and research, as well as working at a brain injury rehabilitation centre. Emilina’s ambition is to work in Drama Therapy.

Kathleen Nellis (2010) Having gained a distinction in her Masters in Costume Design at the London College of Fashion, Kathleen set up her own film and costume design business, working on the new Daniel Day

Read English Literature at the University of Newcastle and works as an Acquisitions Director at The Collective, the UK’s largest location agency providing premium locations to the film Industry.

Ruth Riisnaes (1973) Trained as a Biomedical Scientist in Cellular Pathology at St. Thomas’s Hospital, London. After 33 years she moved to the Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, where she is now a Senior Scientific Officer and Laboratory Manager in the Cancer Biomarkers Team, working with the Drug Development Unit and researching biomarkers of interest in prostate cancer. She is still in touch with school friends and goes to the 1973 reunion each year. The Institute offers work experience to a small number of applicants each year and we are delighted that two current BGS girls will undertake work experience with Ruth.

After studying Materials Science at University of Oxford, Anna completed her PhD at University College London. In 2017, She was named Engineer of the Year by the Royal Academy of Engineering. Anna’s work has been published as a chapter entitled Smart Materials, in a book called What’s Next? Curated and edited by the physicist Jim Al-Khalili. Not one for sitting still, Anna is also a successful stand-up comedian. We are delighted that Anna will be returning to BGS this summer as our Prize Giving guest of honour. 06

Katie studied Business Management at the University of Sheffield. In 2016, Katie joined LoopUp, a company specialising in connecting businesses, through innovative software solutions. Katie is relishing her role and in Autumn 2017 she moved to to Australia to open an office in New South Wales.

Amanda Windatt (née Wilkins, 1982) Amanda went to dance college and has run her dance school in Wellingborough for 25 years, The Kilburn School of Dance. Amanda specialises in teaching ISTD Classical Greek, Modern, National and RAD Ballet. The dance school has represented England in competitions, performed at the Royal Albert Hall, as well as winning numerous awards.

Jess took a year out, working as a lifeguard and travelling to Cambodia, Bali and Thailand where she taught English; and then onto India where she worked in an elephant sanctuary. Jess is now reading Retail Marketing at the Loughborough University.

Loretta Della Ripa (2015) Loretta is studying Modern Languages with Management at the University of Leicester. She is in Barcelona as part of her Erasmus year abroad, working for the Marketing department at 1Global Translators. She arrived in Barcelona in the midst of the Catalan independence referendum, which was very educational. She is settled in and is enjoying making friends. Sophie is enjoying life at the University of Birmingham. She is a member of Birmingham University Singers and performed at the BBC Proms as part of the BBC Proms Youth Choir, comprising 300 singers from around the country.

Carla Barberio (2013) Carla is currently in her fifth of six years at Medical School, planning to specialise in Orthopaedic Surgery. She won the Sands Cox Entrance Scholarship in her first year, as well as two Distinction prizes in her first and third years. Last year, she undertook an Intercalated Batchelor of Science degree in Clinical Anatomy and received a 1st. Her research project for her dissertation was presented at the Congress of the Federation of the European Societies for Surgery of the Hand in June 2017. This year, Carla will spend her elective month at The Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong, auditing how hand trauma surgery varies between the UK and Hong Kong.

Lottie Bruce (2014) Graduated in 2017 from Kings College London with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Whilst at university Lottie was captain of the University of London Boat Club for two years, and last summer competed at both Henley Royal Regatta and the European University Games. She has joined Ernst & Young as Forensic Data Analyst in the Fraud Investigation and Dispute Services team.

Ellen is undertaking a Business Administration Apprenticeship at Bedford College, in conjunction with Chartered Surveyors, Kirkby Diamond.

Charlotte Strickley (2015)

In her last year of studying Psychology at the University of Reading, Charlotte has successfully gained a place on the Marks & Spencer Graduate Scheme for Autumn 2018. Charlotte had a three month placement last summer as a Marketing and Communications Intern at a start-up called KYMIRA Sport. Working for a small company enabled Charlotte to observe and work in different areas of the business, helping develop her skillset.

Congratulations to Rebecca who won the Adult Sports Personality of the Year Award at the annual Bedford Sports Awards in recognition of her crosscountry running achievements.

Currently at Falmouth School of Art Emily won the Artists’ Collecting Society/Falmouth Material Prize 2017. Emily’s inimitable take on charting landscapes, is inspired by the Cornish coast and topography in which she is based. Emily has also forged a successful career as food and product photographer, working with a number of eclectic food brands and restaurants. Sophie landed an apprenticeship with global communications giant, Publicis Media. Sophie is a Senior Executive working on the P&G account representing a number of their brands.

Joanna performed for two nights alongside the Richard Alston Dance Company at the Royal & Derngate in October. As part of a 20 strong cast, Joanna performed a special prelude performance as part of the Alston Inspired Project, a dance collaboration between Two Thirds Sky and Richard Alston Dance Company, giving aspiring dancers a chance to experience Alston’s repertory.

Lucy is reading International Business at the University of Birmingham, and is currently undertaking her work placement in Woerden, The Netherlands, where she is gaining experience in social media marketing at National Instruments.

IB Reflections We are always delighted to welcome back BGS alumnae to School, particularly those who have recently left to hear how they settling into the next stage of their lives. In January, two 2017 leavers Alice Frost and Anna Hunt (Head Girl 2017), came back to visit the Director of Sixth Form, Dr Jennifer Walters to discuss how they felt that the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme had helped prepared them for the move to university and established them as lifelong learners. Since leaving BGS in the summer, Alice has gone on to study Medicine at the University of East Anglia and Anna is studying Biological Sciences at Durham University. Over lunch, the girls enjoyed reminiscing about the good times with staff and students and reflection on how far they had come in the Sixth Form. The IB Diploma is offered as an alternative to A Levels at BGS, it is a broad based international recognised qualification, with at its centre a mission to develop in students the learner attributes which they will need to make a difference in their worlds.

Both girls were happy to give advice to current students who may be considering the IB Diploma at Sixth Form. They suggest that you need to be focused on the type of person you will become and look towards your future goals. It was important that you learnt to be organised, a great skill to develop when you are still at school with the support of teachers rather than struggling once you get to university. Finally, they said that you should love your Higher Level subjects, enjoy your Standard Level subjects, learn from them but do not fret.

The programme places emphasis on independent learning, enquiry and reflective skills as well as a commitment to build communication skills and an open-minded global outlook. Students study six subjects, including Mathematics, English, a Humanities, a Language and a Science. This keeps knowledge broad and post school options very open whilst building deep competences in a wide range of subject areas. In addition, the programme incorporates an extended essay, the study of the Theory of Knowledge and community service.

Other BGS IB alumnae students agree and say that studying the Diploma made the transition to university easier. Ellen Lovell (Head Girl 2016) is currently studying Business at the University of Bath and recently got in touch, she observed: “I have found that studying such a wide range of subjects in the IB has helped me to understand my first year modules, and the independent learning aspects for the extended essay really helped me to transition to the more independent way of studying at university. It has allowed me to balance my university work with my societies, sports, going out and having time to be more domesticated. Studying the IB had meant that I can instantly find common ground with the international students on my course.”

Highly respected by both universities and employers, the IB Diploma provides an outstanding grounding as Alice and Anna’s experiences illustrate. Alice reflected about her first week of Sixth Form and said: “I remember the first week of Sixth Form, I was nervous about all the presentations I would have to give over the next two years. However, by the time the course was over I was volunteering to address the guests at the IB celebration dinner. “I do not believe I would have established confidence in this skill if it were not for the regular structured and supported opportunities in the IB Diploma to learn how to give presentations. Every week at university, I have to complete a research paper and present the findings. Many fellow medical students find this very stressful, but I do not give it a second thought”.

Dr Walters concluded: “It is always wonderful to hear from our alumnae and in this case how studying the IB Diploma has encouraged them to think critically and drive their own learning at university. Anna added: “I believe I am a more rounded person because of the IB Diploma. I read the newspaper in a different way, I feel myself to be highly organised and though learning these skills was hard, it was worth it”. 08

Bedford Girls’ School Sporting Success Bedford Girls’ School (BGS) Sports Department continues to go from strength to strength, building on the legacies of both heritage schools. School Sport Magazine ranking BGS as the 4th best all girls’ independent school for sport in 2017 and 10th overall on the combined list of co-educational and single-sex independent schools. Mrs Axford, Director of Sport, explained: “As a School we strive to provide an outstanding sporting education. It is important that we create an environment where our girls can truly develop, improve and enjoy their sport. Our department plays a pivotal role in teaching each girl to take risks, be resilient and build self-confidence.” The PE team offer extensive expertise across a wide variety of sports, most of the coaches have played or coached at an elite level, the current team includes an ex-Olympic rower, a world champion triathlete, a UK netballer and ex-international lacrosse and hockey players. Each year the school field over 100 different teams and participates in close to 1,500 fixtures! In addition to the extensive sports facilities on the Cardington Road site, and the boathouse, Bedford Girls’ School boasts state of the art lacrosse facilities at Cople Fields. Opened in 2016, it includes a modern pavilion, six full size lacrosse fields and an impressive viewing gallery. Mrs Axford adds: “Cople Fields is an important facility for the School as it allows us to host regional competitions

and tournaments. The facility also now hosts our annual lacrosse match between our First XII and Old Girls’. The 2017 match paid a special tribute to Miss Joan Gibson (Gibby) who sadly passed away aged 97. We were delighted to have many friends and family from our community in attendance including Joan’s niece Mrs Sarah Brown.” The Old Girls’ team for 2017 included former Head Girl Anna Hunt (2017), sisters Aimee Oakley (2008) and Elena Salmon (2017), as well as Kate Axford (2017) and Katie Parrish (2017) both of whom hold international caps in Lacrosse for England and Wales respectively. Adding to the excitement of the event, the teams also comprised competing sisters: Kirstie (2016) and Eilidh Moffat, and Bea (2014) and Evie Caldwell. The Old Girls’ claimed victory 15-8 and Mrs Sarah Brown presented the Joan Gibson Memorial Trophy, purchased by The Guild, for the Player of the Match to Lower Sixth student Georgia Staroscik, who gave an excellent performance for the First XII. Many of our Old Girls’ play leading roles in their university lacrosse teams with a number also at international level including Emma Brown (2013) and Emily Myrtle (2013) who both represented Wales and Scotland at the Lacrosse Home Internationals in 2016, respectively. The love of lacrosse instilled in so many of our alumnae and current students owes its legacy of the former Head of PE at BHS. Miss Gibson spent all but five years of her teaching career at BHS (1951-72). Her students remember her fondly always with a twinkle in her eye.

Educated at St Swithun’s, Winchester, she passed her Chartered Society of Physiotherapists examination in 1940. She then gained her London University Diploma in the Theory and Practice of Physical Education in 1941, prior to enrolling at Bedford Training College. Joan was initially seconded to BHS from 1947-1952, when she was later appointed Head of PE. Miss Gibson’s special interests were swimming, lacrosse, rounders and cricket. Miss Gibson herself was a talented lacrosse player, playing goalkeeper and captaining the Welsh side between 1948-1951. BGS continue to excel at lacrosse with the U13A team becoming National Champions in 2016, the U14A and U15A teams reaching the National School quarter and semi-finals, respectively and the U19A team qualifying for the prestigious Championship Division at National Schools in 2016 and 2017. Lacrosse is not the only sport to boast international alumnae and at the last count BHS, DAHS and BGS have produced international champions in rowing, hockey, badminton, cricket, canoe polo, football, sailing, tennis, golf, triathlon, javelin, modern pentathlon, showjumping, sailing and diving. Miss MacKenzie, Headmistress, concluded: “We are extremely proud of the girls’ success in sport and how they have balanced this with their studies. Our success is a combined measure of the girls’ continued effort and commitment to the School, our staff’s ceaseless dedication, and to all the parents who contribute in their incredible support for their daughters at so many fixtures.”

ALUMNAE EVENTS Bedford Regatta, May 2017 We were pleased to be joined by many members from our alumnae to cheer on our rowers at the annual Bedford Regatta. Pimms, tea and scones were enjoyed on the riverbank as the BGS crews battled it out on the River Great Ouse. More than 40 girls, from year 9 - Upper Sixth were entered across five categories, and BGS reached four finals, with the WJ15 winning their category. The senior A crew competed in the final of the adult women’s category, and came up against BGS alumna, Gemma Crook (2014), whose Warwick RC crew beat BGS by a very small margin. It was a great day and the strong support made a big difference to all crews in the crucial final 50 metres of their races.

Careers in STEM Evening, May 2017

We were delighted to welcome the following alumna to share their experience with our students as part of our careers event, helping illustrate the vast range of careers and opportunities in STEM. Karen Ayms (née Mossman, DAHS1988) is a Low Carbon Consultant and Energy Assessor with the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers. Amanda Field (DAHS 2012) is currently in her second year of a PhD working in the School of Metallurgy & Materials at the University of Birmingham. Philippa Tredget (BHS 2010) studied BEng Chemical Engineering at Sheffield University. She joined Lockheed Martin in 2014 and works as an Ergonomics Design Engineer, working to optimise the internal design of the Warrior CSP. Emma Forbes-Laird (BHS 1994) studied Physics before joining Astrium (now Airbus Defence and Space) as a graduate, enjoying an exciting role as part of Europe’s largest Space company.

We were delighted to welcome alumnae and former teachers to Drake and Morgan in Pancras Square. Guests had a great time mingling over drinks and canapés. Many new links were formed and we are looking forward to welcoming alumnae back into to School to talk to the current students about their careers and experiences in the work place. We had a large turn out of recent graduates and it was lovely to hear how they are getting on in their first jobs and adjusting to life in London. We were also delighted that former DAHS Headmistress, Dr Jill Berry was able to join the occasion.

After a career break Emma returned to works as a Systems Engineer designing the next generation of digital processors on board space satellites. Nicola Gotzheim (BHS 1990) and Olivia Perkins (BHS 2005) represented Kier plc.

Dame Alice 1982 Reunion, 10th June 2017

Organised by Julie Keely (née Main), 1982 alumnae gathered from far and wide, including from Australia (Julia Holder, née Pearson) and the USA (Sarah Johnson). They enjoyed tours 10

of the School and shared memories of their Headmistress, Miss Morse. Many had not been back since leaving school. Those who attended will cherish their get-together with fellow student Penny Weight (née Symes) who sadly passed away the following month. Penny had suffered an accident some years previously which had confined her to a wheelchair. Determined to attend the reunion and catch up with her friends, she will be remembered for her lovely warm personality and immense bravery.

Dame Alice 1973 Annual Reunion May 2017, May 2017 The 1973 Group is still going strong and continue to meet regularly and organise reunions at various locations. The 2017 event was held at Paula Hoffman’s house in Harrold. The next reunion is scheduled for Saturday 12th May 2018 and will be held in Thame, Oxfordshire.

Bedford High School Verity Mason-McLeod (2004) Former pupil and current PE teacher, Verity gave birth to a baby girl, Matilda Mason-McLeod on 11th September 2017.

Dame Alice Harpur School Heather Dawson (2003) Former pupil and BGS Biology teacher, Heather gave birth to a baby boy George.

Deaths

Bedford High School Caroline Brown (1971) Sadly passed away in February 2018. An exceptional cellist, Caroline founded The Hanover Band in 1980 to perform and record Beethoven on nineteenth century contemporary instruments.

Mary Dickey (Former History Teacher) Mary sadly passed away in August 2017 aged 94. Mary was a remarkable lady and had worked on the Japanese code-breaking project at Bletchley Park during WWII. If anyone wishes to make a donation in Mary’s memory, they should be sent to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Jane Hall (née Chandler, formerly Goodwin, 1983) After a brave and lengthy battle with cancer, Jane sadly passed away in October. Alongside her mother, Dorothy, Jane was an active member of The Guild and held the position of Secretary until 2016. Jane was also a long standing member of The Foundation Committee, and in more recent years was also a committee member of The Alumnae. We give thanks for Jane’s life and the years of commitment she gave to The Guild, The Foundation and Bedford Girls’ School. Jane will always be remembered for her wise input and support during the difficult years of the merger.

Mrs Oonagh Holt (née Barker, 1951)

Joan Gibson Passed away 27th March 2017. Head of PE from 1951 to 1972, she instilled a love of lacrosse in so many.

Eileen Matthew (BHS Grange 1947) Sadly passed away in December 2016.

Elizabeth Miles (French and Latin Teacher) Passed away peacefully in May 2017. Elizabeth was a Deputy Head from 1977 to 1982 and will be remembered as a lovely person, a delightful colleague and a role model for many girls.

Sheila Milner-Brown née Robinson, 1963)

Oonagh sadly passed away in December 2017 following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. Oonagh was a former Treasurer of The Guild.

Passed away in June 2016 following a short battle with cancer. Sheila was former Head Girl, hockey player and keen horsewoman. A people person with a wide circle of friends.

Born in 1938. Passed away peacefully in May 2017.

Nina Lowry (née Collins was Gardner, 1943) Passed away peacefully in March 2017 aged 91. Nina was a Deputy Head of Grange and her fellow boarders remember her fondly. Nina was a barrister who became the first female permanent judge at the Old Bailey.

Born in 1939 and passed away in June 2017.

Susan Shute (1963) Sadly passed away in November 2017 following a fall.

Ann Smith (née Dawson, BHS Grange 1947) Passed away in 2015. Previously Head of Emergency Surgery at St. Thomas’s Hospital.

Joyce Smith (Maths and Physics Teacher (1962-1981) Passed away in May 2017 aged 95. Joyce will be remembered as a very down-to-earth practical lady, an excellent teacher and colleague.

Marion Waller (née French, 1950) (Former Head of French and Spanish) Marion studied French and Spanish at QMC followed by the Institute of Education, University of London. Marion went to France for two years as an Assistant Teacher, one year in Tours and another in Paris. Whilst in Paris she was offered the post of French and Spanish at DAHS, before becoming Head of the Department. Marion died in September 2016.

Dame Alice Harpur School Ann Barker (née Gregory, 1956) Passed away in July 2014 aged 74.

Ken Leyland (Former Head of Religious Education) Passed away in February 2018 following a long struggle with dementia.

Sylvia Lopez-Real (Former Teacher of French and Spanish) Died peacefully in April 2017.

Darren Solomans (History Teacher) Died aged 45, of a sudden heart attack. Taught at DAHS from 2005-2009.

Miss Dorothea Southwell (Former Head of Mathematics) Dorothea passed away in August 2017 aged 99. Miss Southwell was a former Head of Mathematics from 1953-1978.

Penny Weight (née Symes, 1982) Penny passed away suddenly in July 2017.

Bedford Girls’ School Mick Deards (Assistant Head of Rowing) Much loved Assistant Head of Rowing, passed away in October 2017. Mick had long been part of the Bedford rowing community, first as a boatman and then as Coach in Charge of Rowing at BHS, before joining BGS in 2013. He inspired so many girls to take up rowing, and it was through his expertise that girls gained the confidence and skills to enable them to perform to the best of their ability, with some continuing to an elite standard representing their country at international regattas. María López –Álvarez (Spanish Language Assistant) María sadly lost her life in a car accident in 2017. Her humour, support and commitment helped the girls hone their language skills ahead of their GCSE and Sixth Form examinations. Her cheerful manner and enthusiasm for teaching will be long remembered by the BGS community.

Janine Williams (née Dexter, 1975 and Junior School Teacher) Passed away in June 2017, after a long battle with cancer. A former pupil of DAHS, Janine taught in the Junior School first at DAHS and then BGS. Janine was a warm nurturing teacher who was a wonderful class teacher to girls across many age groups in the Junior School, guiding them though life in the Junior School and transition to the Senior School. 13

As neither of the heritage schools are registered as schools it is no longer possible to leave funds to these organisations. Please be advised that if it were your intention to leave any bequests to either Dame Alice Harpur School or Bedford High School, they would not automatically be transferred to Bedford Girls’ School. We would therefore suggest that if any alumnae had intended to leave a bequest to Dame Alice Harpur School or Bedford High School and now wished it to come to Bedford Girls’ School, they need to specifically amend their Wills to stipulate that change in beneficiary. We would also suggest that you take legal advice before making any amendments to your Will to ensure that your wishes are stated.
