elcome to the second edition of The Journal.

to be mentored and, once selected, will meet their mentor twice a term over the course of a year, to help them prepare for the next stage, giving advice and support as the girls decide on career paths and university options. We will start a pilot scheme this autumn and are thankful to our Alumnae Chair, Kate Whitlock, herself a professional coach, for her expert guidance and hard work in establishing the scheme. If you would like to be considered as a mentor, please contact Emma MacKenzie in the Alumnae Office for further details.

I have been delighted by the response to the first edition and enjoyed all the communication from old girls who have been in touch to share their news and experiences. I am constantly inspired by our alumnae embracing opportunities and facing challenges with confidence and determination; you set wonderful examples for our current students.

The past year has gone in a flash and the School continues to go from strength to strength. Academically in 2016, we posted our best ever GSCE results with over 65% of all entries achieving A/A*. Our IB and A Level results were also impressive with over 90% of Upper Sixth leavers achieving their first or second choice university places. I am proud of them all and look forward to watching our younger alumnae make their way in the world.

In Guild news, we say a very fond farewell to Dorothy Chandler, who formally relinquished her role as Chair last Spring. Dorothy’s contribution to both BHS and BGS have been formidable. She first joined The Guild Committee as Secretary in 1973 and later became Chair in 2005. We are extremely thankful for her committed service and support of the schools.

We continue to invest in the fabric of the School to ensure we deliver a forward thinking education. I believe that integrating technology into the classroom is key to preparing the girls for the world into which they will enter. I am pleased to announce that we have been awarded Apple Distinguished School status, an accolade given to very few schools in the UK, and one which reflects our innovative use of iPad technology when teaching and learning.

I am pleased to report that Jane Leech, (née McKendrick, BHS 1971-1982) takes over as the new Chair of The Guild. Jane has been part of The Guild Committee for a decade and is both an old girl and parent, as a mother of four daughters, all of whom have attended BHS and/or BGS. Her youngest daughters are still at BGS, in Years 7 and 11. We thank Jane for taking on the role and look forward to working alongside her.

Last summer we refurbished the Junior School, maintaining the beautiful lobby and painted ceiling, but opening up spaces to create lighter, modern rooms with colourful flexible furniture. It is simply stunning, and I would encourage you to come and take a look.

We also opened our new sports facility, Cople Fields, and the occasion was marked by the Old Girls’ lacrosse match. It was a beautiful September day and we were delighted that so many alumnae supported the event, either as players or spectators.

It is an energetic way to start the new school year and a fitting christening for our new lacrosse facility. We have recently been ranked in the top three of UK girls’ independent schools for sport, maintaining the strong sporting traditions of our heritage schools.

In addition, Ann Maltby has decided to step down as treasurer to the Alumnae, she will continue in her role on The Guild.

Again, Ann has been fundamental in the development of the Alumnae Association and we are very thankful for her hard work and support.

As we build our “connected community” it has been wonderful to meet so many of you at events over the last year, and I hope to meet more of you this year. Our doors are always open and we are happy to welcome alumnae into the School.

The Alumnae continues to grow as does the number of events we are able to offer. We are keen to get more old girls involved and would love to hear from anyone who would like to join either the Committee or support a working group on a specific project.

A key focus is to provide mentorship and support for our network of alumnae as we move through different stages of life. We are therefore excited to be launching a Mentorship Programme for Lower Sixth students, with selected alumnae mentoring specific students. In summary, girls will apply

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES According to the leading tech market intelligence platform, CB Insight, funding for education technology rose by 64% in 2015 to more than $3.1bn. It is safe to say the educational landscape is changing, and Bedford Girls’ School has embraced this emphasis on technology, as shown by the recent award of Apple Distinguished School (ADS) status.

BGS prides itself on being innovative in the classroom, and its use of technology is instrumental in meeting this objective. The School continually strives to ensure that students are digitally fluent, adaptable and confident to use technology in ways that enhance their learning and life skills.

Following extensive trials, September 2014 saw the School embark on its most significant technology project to date, with the rolling out of iPad minis to all students across the whole school.

Mr James Potter, Director of Digital Strategy at BGS, said: “Not only do the iPads support the traditional teaching and learning methods, but they offer the girls the flexibility they need in a fast-paced learning environment, with all their work from each subject available on one device.

“Instead of using a plethora of textbooks and folders, girls can now research, edit and submit work, in a more efficient way, which provides a greater interactive and collaborative experience. From an early age girls are making independent decisions about which learning tools, whether that is iPads or more traditional tools, are the most appropriate for the tasks in hand.”

The emphasis BGS places on technology and innovation in the classroom, has led to ADS status. An honour only a handful of schools in the UK can lay claim to, the Apple Distinguished School title is reserved for schools, which meet criteria for innovation, leadership and educational excellence, and demonstrate a clear vision of exemplary learning environments.

Mr Potter continued: “The Apple Distinguished School title acknowledges the depth of integration of technology throughout the School, and our commitment to preparing girls for the future in a globalised world.”

Another key innovation is the production of iBooks. A regular stream of free iBooks are developed for the girls to use for their work. Ranging from Biology to Classics, the iBooks contain revision text, quizzes and interactive videos, just to name a few features.

It’s key that BGS develops digitally literate students during their journey through the School, as employers expect candidates to boast sound technology skills. According to the World Economic Forum, the demand for technology skills will continue to grow by 20% by 2025, and new technologies will create more than two million jobs in just under five years’ time.

The Computer Science Department is helping the girls prepare for a career

He added: “With students proactively looking for solutions on their iPads and sharing ideas with their peers, teachers are now able to spend more time working with individuals and small groups. In addition, teachers can plan innovative lessons on iPads and 02

in technology by running the GCSE Computer Science qualification, where they learn coding and robotics and create games.

In the six years since BGS formed, a number of students have already ventured into the technology industry, studying Computer Science and Computer Science and Mathematics.

Alexis Monks, who left BGS in 2014, is currently in her final year at the University of Bristol, where she’s undertaking a Computer Science Degree, and has already been interviewed by the likes of Google.

Mr Potter said: “For many years women have been under-represented in IT and associated sectors, but with the skills our girls are learning from an early age in the Junior School right through to GCSE Computer Science, they’re starting to flourish in such industries.”

“For alumnae like Alexis to be studying at a top university for Computer Science, and earning interviews with world-leading companies at such an early stage in their careers, proves that BGS is a proven path for women looking to work in technology.”

Mr Potter concluded: “As education technology continues to flourish at a fast rate of knots, the School realises how important it is to equip girls with the necessary skills. With technology woven into the BGS curriculum so deeply, students can’t help but be future-ready.”

Top Secret Friends

There is nothing quite like the thrill of the unexpected! And this is just what happened to the Bedford High School Archive team whilst viewing Kate Westaway’s book, Old Girls in New Times.

They stumbled across a list of girls who had been spotted by the BHS Headmistress on the train from Bedford St John’s to Bletchley. ‘But what they did when they were THERE, nobody ever knew, and it was impossible to guess,’ said Miss Westaway.

Enlisting the help of Jonathan Byrne, Oral History Officer at Bletchley Park, we now know that the following alumnae were involved at Bletchley Park, but details are limited. We are reaching out to all alumnae for help with memories, anecdotes or contact details for any of the following. Are there Dame Alice Harpur School alumnae with connections to Bletchley too?

Elisabeth Daphne Bridger (1931-1940) One of five children and lived in Biggleswade.

Celia Bryan (née Gibson) (1936-1940)

Boarder at Grange and later went on to Miss Fogarty’s Central School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art for Speech Training.

Joan Mary Cash-Reed (née Orchard) (1935-1942)

Weekly boarder at Grange. House Prefect. Leaving destination recorded as ‘secretarial at the Foreign Office’.

Attended BHS with her younger twin sisters Elizabeth “Betty” (née Orchard) (1937-1944) and Margaret (née Orchard) (1937-1944).

Barbara Diana Clarke (née Gordon) (1937-1940)

Barbara was Head of Wimborne.

Editor of The Aquila and played 1st XII Lacrosse. Following school Barbara read Linguistics at Westfield College, London, and joined the Women of the Royal Naval Service (WRNS) alongside Dorothy Talma. Barbara married, had four children, and spent time living in Australia.

Ethel Florence Dove (1929-1936)

Ethel was a Prefect and Head of Country.

Ethel attended BHS with her sister Evelyn (1933-1939). On leaving school Ethel attended Bishop’s Stortford’s Hockerill Training College.

Patricia Beatrice Fagg (née Course) (1932-1940)

Head of School. Head of West. Studied Linguistics at Newnham College, Cambridge. Married with three children.

Carol Jean Good (née Gifford) (1932-1939)

Deputy Head of School, Prefect, Head of West and Secretary of the Social Services Committee. Carol read Social Science at Edinburgh University. One of four Gifford sisters, Ingaborge Boletta (19321936), Elspeth Grizel (1933-1938) and Thelma Aaland (1932-1940).

Claire Edith Harding (1925-1931)

Boarder at Wimborne. School Prefect.

Head of Wimborne. Leaving destination recorded as Dartford Physical Training College.

Lady Ena Mary Hooper (née Osborn) (1932-1939)

A Prefect, Head of Country, Netball Captain, on the Aquila Committee and Play Reading Society Vice Chairman.

Margaret Mary Max (1932-1938)

Attended BHS along with her sisters Ruth (1933-1939) and Patricia Ann (19341941). Head of Grange. Prefect. Lacrosse captain 1st XII, netball, cricket. Went to the Triangle Secretarial Training College, London.

Pamela Joan Maxwell Mott (née Sears) (1932-1940)

Following school Pamela studied Linguistics at London’s Royal Holloway College. Married with two children.

Nancy Margaret Nicholson (1935-1943)

Quantocks boarder and a school Prefect.

Post-war, went to Newnham College, Cambridge, read English. In 1953 she became Assistant Librarian at Royal Holloway College.

E. Joan Evelyn Rawlings-Rowland (née Wakefield) (1933-1941)

Prefect. Social Services Committee secretary, Games Committee secretary, Cricket captain. In March 1943 Joan was reported to be at the Foreign Office alongside Joan Orchard. She attended BHS with her sister Margaret (19331942). In 1953 Joan married a lawyer in Washington D.C., USA.

Dorothy May Staniford (1933-1939)

Netball 1st VII. Attended BHS alongside older sister M.Janet (1932-1938). Miss Westaway’s War-Time Notebook (Aquila July 1940) reports that Ethel Dove and Dorothy were starting physical training classes for ATS and WAAFs at Bletchley.

Rosemary Sumner (née Johns) (1933-1943)

Deputy Head of School, Deputy Head of House, Prefect, Aquila Secretary and a House Cricket captain. Post-war Rosemary went to St Hugh’s College, Oxford, marrying in 1949.

Dorothy Ellen Talma (1931-1941)

A Prefect. Head of West, and a Debating Society member. Studied at Royal Academy of Music. Lifelong services career started at WRNS.

BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL Emma Banks (1986) Congratulations to Emma for once again appearing on the Debrett’s 500 List, recognising her work in the music industry. Emma works for global entertainment and sports agency, Creative Artists Agency.

Anna Beattie (1986) Congratulations to Anna Beattie who won a third BAFTA TV award in May 2016 for popular TV show, The Great British Bake Off. Anna is the executive producer of The Great British Bake Off and co-owner of Love Productions with her husband, Richard McKerrow. They have also produced The Baby Borrowers, Filthy Rich and Homeless.

Emma Brown (BGS 2013) and Emily Myrtle (BHS 2013) There was tournament success for both Emma (Wales) and Emily (Scotland) in the 2016 Lacrosse Home Internationals. Congratulations to both girls.

Karen L. Campbell (1970) Karen works for both the LowResidency Goddard Graduate Institute and the Goddard Undergraduate Programs of Goddard College in Vermont, USA, but is currently living in Japan working on a research project. Karen is based in the US for about three months per year and would be keen to connect with any US-based alumnae. (kaeruwa.campbell1@gmail.com).

Helen Clark (née Field, 2000)

Keen lacrosse players Helen and Jane Wijerantna came to visit the new playing fields at Cople in the Autumn Term.

Helen studied French and German at university, and then worked in Canada.

She currently works for Network Rail and recently had her first child, Henry Spence Manfred Clark, born 16th November 2016.

Graduated with a 1st class Hons in Marketing from the University of Plymouth and has started work as an event sales and marketing executive with B2B Marketing in London.

Mollie Foster (née Stratford, 1960) and Glynda Easterbrook (née Lewis, 1972) Fellow Guild committee members bumped into each other by chance on a South Pacific cruise, and enjoyed catching up.

Class of 1984

Mollie was a cruise passenger and preparing to climb the highest extinct volcano on Easter Island, while Glynda was a visiting Geology lecturer and was delivering a talk on the same island.

Silvia Cavallini (1987) Silvia lives in Lexington, MA, with her husband and two children. Her journalistic career as a correspondent for various US and French media outlets saw her living and working in San Francisco, New York, Hong Kong, Japan, Beijing, Taipei and Italy.

Silvia is freelancing and would love to reconnect with any other US-based alumnae (scavallini@gmail.com).

Shevaun Davis (2012)

Joan Gibson (1951-1972) 13 ladies from the class of 1984, completed the Women v Cancer Ride the Night in to central London in May 2016, and raised a staggering £7820.98. The ride benefits three UK cancer charities: Breast Cancer Care, Ovarian Cancer Action and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust.

Joan is delighted, aged 96 ½, to find fame and will be featured in the United States Lacrosse Hall of Fame in Maryland, USA. Joan played international lacrosse and captained the Welsh team between 1948-1951.

Joan was capped 10 times for her country. In 1951 Joan was appointed as a PE teacher at BHS and became a selector for the national team.

KaMan Hung (2001) We were delighted to welcome KaMan to BGS in July 2016, with a fellow teacher from Hong Kong, before she embarked on a tour of the UK to see a number of her BHS friends.

Heather Lane (née Scott, 1998)

Joan still enjoys hearing about school life in her weekly telephone catch ups with Sue Bullerwell and Sandy Hebblethwaite.

Jill Hadfield (née Currie early 1960’s) Jill is now Associate Professor at Unitec, New Zealand. She has also worked as a teacher and trainer throughout the world and has written over thirty books, which includes the bestselling Classroom Dynamics, and Excellent!

She has also worked as a consultant for the UK’s British Council and Department of International Development, writing materials for and reviewing aid projects in Africa.

Nicola Harris (née Weeks, 2000) Nicola is the proprieter of George James Bridal in Bedford and winner of three 2016 Bedfordshire Business Awards achieving the overall County title, Service Excellence and Business Person of the Year.

Nicola continues with her acting career and recently starred in EastEnders, playing nurse Laura Barnes.

Sandy Hebblethwaite (née, White,1955) Sandy enjoyed meeting up with Grange friends in London in October – Gail Gordon (née Milbourn, formerly Pallas, 1953), Jan Clemo (née Pullen, 1955), Candy Godber (née Parrish, 1956) and Judy Church (née Bell, 1954).

She is now a Senior Associate Attorney at Gill Jennings & Every in London.

After nearly 14 years working, Heather decided she wants to see some more of the world and has embarked on a year of travelling, whilst continuing to work through the global programme Remote Year (www.remoteyear.com).

Starting in Kuala Lumpur in August 2016 Heather will be living and working in 12 different cities, one month each, working alongside 75 other professionals from all over the world. Eleanor Murray (1998) Eleanor studied Law at Sussex University. She now lives in South West London, heading up the Residential Disputes team at CMS Cameron McKenna LLP. In 2015 Eleanor was listed as one of the top 100 most influential people in residential property, and was Highly Commended for Associate of the Year at the 2015 British Legal Awards.

Ellie Piggott (2009) Ellie currently has her eyes set on rowing for GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, after a successful season and becoming Senior Rowing World Champion. Ellie studied at Oxford University and won the Women’s Boat Race twice, and then went on to become the first GB World U23 champion in the lightweight double in 2013.

Ellie has since trained with the senior GB rowing team at the national centre in Caversham, winning a sliver medal at the 2015 World Championships. Ellie 05

went one better at this year’s World Championships, competing in the lightweight quadruple sculls. Ellie’s crew exacted revenge on Germany, who beat GB to gold in 2015.

Sarah Raven (née Fisher 2004) Many of you will know Sarah either as a former pupil, or as a PE teacher at BHS, DAHS and BGS. Sarah was diagnosed first with cancer in 2011 and in January 2015 her diagnosis changed from a Neuroendocrine Tumour to an extremely rare Gastrointestinal Neuroectodermal Tumour (GNET).

She is now participating in a phase one clinical trial.

On 29th August 2016, Sarah’s husband (JJ Raven), sister Laura Fisher (BHS 2006) and friends (Charlotte Culley, BHS 2004, Jenny Laing, BHS 2004, Will Hardy, BMS 2003 and Jon Wheater) embarked on a swim across the English Channel to raise money for Cancer Research (who will direct its money towards rare sarcomas) and a local cancer support charity, Above and Beyond (www.aboveandbeyond.org.uk).

The group all trained very hard around their full time jobs and managed the challenge in an amazing 10 hours and 29 minutes. To date nearly £25,000 has been raised.

Anne Samuel (former member of staff) Anne joined BHS in 2000, teaching both French and English as well as being Head of Careers.

Anne is a valuable contributer to preserving the BHS archives, and is part of a hard working team meet every Thursday morning.

Dawn Tamayoy-Bullivant (née Bullivant 1990) Writing under the name Dawn Tamayo, her three published novels The Miami Millionaire, Under The Majestic Sky and Where the Heart Lies are available on Kindle and in paperback.

Caroline originally went to university to study Law and Criminology but after two years realised that wasn’t what she wanted to do.

Following a long career in engineering, Karen has recently become a STEM amabassador and is keen to share her experiences and passion for careers in engineering with current students.

After 28 years working for BT/ Accenture, Beverley now works at St John’s Special School in Kempston.

She is also church organist in her local church.

Caroline is currently enjoying working in finance at the Foreign and Commonwealth office.

Jane Wijeratna (née Samuel, 2003)

Dr Jill Berry (former Head, 2000-2010)

Jane has two-year-old son Rex, and her second baby Leoli Inoka was born in January.

Jill recently completed a Professional Doctorate in Education at the University of Nottingham. The focus of her research was the transition from Deputy to Headship, and charted the progress of six deputies as they all became Heads, and explored how best to manage this transition.

Jane studied Physiotheraphy at university. Based in Nottingham, Jane works as a Cardio and Thorasic Specialist at a hospital in Leicester.

Azmery Anwar (1999) Following school Azmery went to the University of Cambridge where she undertook a preclinical and then on to UCL where she finished her MBBS. Whilst at UCL Azmery took a gap year to study an Islamic Studies diploma at Loughborough University, followed by four months in Syria studying Arabic.

Azmery carried out her foundation training as a doctor at the Whittington Hospital in London, before embarking on a three-year GP training scheme in Luton. Azmery has two little boys and currently works as a locum GP.

Flo Armitage (2012) Flo graduated from Cardiff Metropolitan University with a degree in Textiles and now works for iSea Surfwear, a design and screen print clothing company (www.iseasurfwear.co.uk).

An avid rock climber, Flo has recently graced the cover of Pembroke Rock: 1000 selected rock climbs, at a terrifying height.

Alison Bourgeois (née Beastall, 1971) Alison competed in the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon (60-64 age bracket) and achieved an amazing second place, running in 3.32.02 hrs.

Dr Sophia Cashman (2004) Sophia is now a qualified doctor and is halfway through her surgical training.

Sophia was recently rotated back to Bedford Hospital, having not been back to Bedford since leaving school!

Sophia is a Urologist and came to speak to BGS students about her experience and careers in medicine.

Alex Hopkins (2011) Alex read Sociology at the University of Nottingham, before joining the HR Whitbread graduate programme.

Alex is now in a permanent position with Whitbread, travelling all over the United Kingdom working in talent management and recruitment.

Despite her German exchange partner, Bettina, dying suddenly in 2010, Beverley is still in contact with Bettina’s family in Celle and has made several visits over the years.

Bethany Kuszlewicz (2012) Bethany read Biology at the University of York. She was awarded a Women into Science and Engineering scholarship to carry out a Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics at the University of Newcastle. During this time Bethany has become involved in an outreach scheme, Street Science, which involves going into schools and getting the public engaged with science, through fun interactive demonstrations.

In September 2016 Bethany was awarded a scholarship to begin a PhD at the University of Leeds, based at the Institute of Cancer and Pathology, where she will be researching the immune responses that occur in patients with the blood disease Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria.

Amber Lee (née Levy 2001) Amber went to the University of Nottingham to study French and German.

As part of her degree she had a year abroad working as a language assistant in Austria.

Upon graduating, Amber spent a year working in customer service and sales in French and German for called Sentry Safe, before moving to Nottingham, where she undertook her PGCE.

Sara Pearson (2012) In July 2016, Sara graduated from the University of Leeds with a 2:1 in French. She spent her third year abroad in Paris under the British Council Programme, where she taught English and English Culture to French students at the Lycee Marie Curie in Sceaux.

Coincidentally, this was the school Miss Fourey-Jones (former member of staff DAHS and BGS) was a student, and she and Sara have had some happy exchanges about her time there!

Sara has now started a full-time Graduate Diploma in Law at BPP University of Law in London, hoping to combine French and Law.

Harriet studied Computer Science at university and went on to work in video gaming. Harriet won the Rising Star of the Year Prize at the 2017 Women in IT Awards.

She currently works for the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), the UK’s leading agency to monitor and remove indecent content relating to children.

Liza Nicholson (née Zwetsloot, 1982) Liza’s German penfriend from her school days contacted The Alumnae Office trying to trace her.

A reunion ensued last summer and after 37 years the ladies met up in England last summer.

Jill studied at the Royal Academy of Music and became a composer. Jill was honoured by the Academy with an ARAM (Associateship) for her contribution to the music profession.

Jill married a fellow musician, Barrie.

They settled in Sunbury-on Thames and had two children, Christine and Simon.

Unfortunately Jill is now registered disabled and travels by wheelchair scooter but this doesn’t stop her enjoying her favourite pastimes of gardening, cooking and Petit Point cross stitch.

Sally Whitney (2003) We were delighted to be joined by Sally and her dog Ethan at the Years 9 and 10 assembly in January. Sally talked about her illness, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and working with the charity, the Canine Partners.

Ethan is Sally’s constant companion and has given her a new independence – he can fetch water, use a contactless credit card, open doors and call for help if she needs it.

Tell us about your first day at school?

EB: I was seven years old when I joined Bedford High School. I remember on the first day we went to the ICT rooms in the Senior School and all the older girls were gushing over how small we were. I moved to Bedford Girls’ School when it opened in 2011 to join the Sixth Form. I remember being excited to wear the brand new Sixth Form uniform and start my A Levels.

AH: I remember the overwhelming excitement I felt on my first day. Before I got on the bus, my Dad had helped me do my tie, and I didn’t realise that it was meant to be tucked into my jumper rather than on the outside of it!

Wardrobe dramas aside, I remember how big I thought the Junior School was, and how excited I was to start lessons, meet my form teacher and receive my new books! The Junior School felt so friendly, welcoming and vibrant so I didn’t feel nervous at all.

What’s your favourite memory from school?

EB: One highlight of my education was the Year 9 Geography trip to the Peak District. Even though it rained the

whole time and we had to stand kneedeep in a river, it was so much fun and I made lots friends on that trip that I still keep in contact with today.

AH: There are many memories which come to mind, and I think this reflects how much I have appreciated my school career, and how much I have learnt from my time at school, both inside and outside of the classroom.

One of my proudest moments at school was my first assembly as Head Girl.

Looking around the hall whilst singing the school hymn, with the entire school community, is something I will never forget.

Elizabeth you studied Mathematics at A Level. What makes it such an interesting subject?

EB: I’ve always enjoyed the challenges in Maths and the satisfaction of understanding and completing a problem. I enjoyed studying it in more depth at A Level. At university, I realised how broad and exciting Maths is. I am particularly interested in how we can use the abstract concepts in Maths to model everything from voting patterns to financial markets.

And Anna why did you choose the IB Route?

Looking back on your school days, what have you drawn on to help you make your decisions to date?

AH: I am taking Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Maths, English and German. I decided to take the IB programme because I found it so hard in Year 11 to narrow it down to just three! I also feel that this type of study has suited me and allowed me to keep my options open. Having the breadth of study is such an advantage and there is definitely something to be said for multidisciplinary study. I selected the subjects which I had the most interest and curiosity in. This has definitely helped me to remain engaged and motivated throughout the two years.

EB: The ideas that were instilled in me at BGS are still with me today. In particular, I know that if I seek opportunities and work hard, I can achieve my goals. This mentality has helped me when studying for exams and applying for jobs.

Furthermore, by learning to be reflective at school, I have been able to continually evaluate my actions and think through decisions carefully. This was really important when choosing to accept a placement on either the Barclays or the J.P. Morgan graduate programme.

AH: I have always taken great inspiration from Malala Yousafzai, who is a keen activist for female education and continues to campaign even after being shot in the head by the Taliban on her way to school. Her pursuit of what she believes is right almost took her life, and this perseverance is something that I find so powerful and think we should all admire.

When you applied for your university course was it with a view to go into banking? Anna - what are your plans after leaving school?

EB: I knew nothing about banking when I started my undergraduate course. I applied to study Mathematics because I loved Maths at school. Once I was at university, I attended careers fairs and networking events. It was here I learnt about the Finance industry. During my final year of my undergraduate course, I took two introductory Financial Mathematics modules. I enjoyed them so much that I am now studying for a Masters in Financial Maths. The degree is intense but I will be well-prepared for a career in banking.

I have also been grateful for support that I have received from my parents, teachers and friends, which is an example of the benefits of a close-knit school community.

Where do you hope to see yourself in ten years’ time?

EB: Ultimately, I hope to be happy, healthy and student debt free! I would like to think I would still be living in London and working in the finance industry or running my own business.

AH: I have offers to study Biology from Durham, Exeter, York and Surrey next year. I haven’t confirmed my choices yet, but I would really like to study at Durham, it is a beautiful city and the University had a great feel to it.

AH: Having grown up on a farm, I would love to be working in the agricultural industry and following my passion. Being heavily involved in the Young Farmers Organisation on the Youth Forum and representing the youth of the organisation from all over the country; has already given me a lot of experience in articulating my views about agriculture, which will be valuable experience in the future.

Following the completion of your Masters this summer, you will be joining J.P. Morgan to work in Credit Risk. How did you prepare for the rigorous assessment process?

EB: Preparation and research were key. Firstly, I had to send off my CV along with answers to motivational questions, and I was required to write about a recent news article and how this would affect the company.

This has certainly been aided by my role at school, which has given me the confidence to voice my views, work with and represent others, and act on initiatives.

Three weeks later I was invited to take part in two telephone interviews. These both involved strength based questions and brainteasers. To prepare for these I used cue cards to write examples from various areas of my life, including summer internships, so I could refer to them as prompts.

Finally, Anna, as Head Girl what do you feel you have learnt about yourself in your final year at BGS? AH: I can barely believe how much I have learnt and how much has changed in a year. As the year progressed, I understood more and more about what was expected of me and what I was capable of doing, and also what I was not capable of!

I then attended the final assessment centre. The day consisted of two interviews, a case study, a role-play and a networking lunch. The case study lasted three hours and was an accurate representation of everyday work in credit risk. The role-play was a 30-minute business meeting with a director and I was required to persuade him to fund an acquisition. Although challenging, I enjoyed speaking with the interviewers and learning more about the company, it helped me decide it is where I wanted to work.

I think it’s important to realise weaknesses as well as strengths, and know that somebody can help you through the more difficult aspects of the role and to understand that delegation is key.

I have learnt to have confidence in myself, be ambitious and motivate the team, which then diffuses through the school community.

ALUMNAE EVENTS Communism, Capitalism and the Cold War History Conference, March 2016 Alumnae joined Sixth Form students studying IB and A Level History, to listen to a day of lectures from world leading experts.

Professor Paul Lewis from the Open University gave an informative talk on Poland and the Soviet Union. Professor James Chapman, University of Leicester, then explored the Cold War through its depiction in James Bond films, and gave interesting insights into Ian Fleming’s influences.

In the afternoon Dr Vivien Miller, University of Nottingham, gave a fascinating session on the US case of the Rosenbergs, and Dr Simon Sleight, King’s College, London, wrapped the day up with a memorable lesson on Australian youth culture during the 1950s-70s

Jane Austen: At Home, April 2016

Alumnae joined parents and girls for a one off performance of Jane Austen: At Home, a one-woman play about the life and times of Jane Austen.

Devised and directed by Jane Austen expert Stephen Siddall, it is a celebration of her liveliness of mind, drawing on material from her memoirs, letters, poetry and novels.

A lovely evening reminded attendees of the wit and intelligence of one of our most loved writers.

Gaining valuable experience and good local contacts for potential work experience and mentoring, the evening was once again a huge success and has become an important part of the careers curriculum.

The Bedford High School Guild celebrated its 63rd Biennial with alumnae of all eras, along with several past heads, gathering together to mark the occasion. The day began with morning service in the Assembly Hall led by Guild Chaplain, Paul Fricker.

The theme of the service was reflecting on the past and looking forward. Sarah Miller (née Rainbow), former Head Girl (1992), gave a moving speech on her time at BHS and the personal difficulties she overcame.

The service was followed by the Annual General Meeting, where Miss MacKenzie thanked The Guild for their generous contribution towards the Sixth Form refurbishment. A delicious buffet lunch followed, with plenty of opportunity to chat and catch-up.

A number of local alumnae representing a wide range of professional sectors came together with parents and friends of BGS, to help Lower Sixth students develop business networking skills.

Charity Cricket Match, June 2016

Lower Sixth student Izzy Gurney organised an event at Bedford School on Tuesday 21st June 2016 to raise money for girls’ cricket in Afghanistan.

Izzy, a passionate cricket player, was the brains behind the Playing for Pitches project, an initiative involving raising money for Afghan Connection, a charity that promotes education and cricket in Afghanistan.

The evening comprised mini cricket games, a barbecue and an auction.

Ex-England cricket captains Graham Gooch OBE and Alastair Cooke CBE were both in attendance. We were also delighted that Dame Alice alumna Anna Edwards (2000), producer of Sportswomen on Sky Sports News HQ, was able to join us, to support and hand out prizes.

A wonderful evening was had by students, parents, alumnae and staff from both BGS and Bedford School, with over £1000 being raised for Afghan Connection.

The Creative Arts Show, June 2016

The Creative Arts faculties threw open their doors to the BGS community to showcase Art, Textiles, Food Technology, Design Technology, Music and Drama.

Held in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, the event saw a wide variety of work including paintings, drawings, sculptures and fashion designs, whilst in DT an array of innovative products were on view.

Year 8 Drama students put on performances whilst in Food Technology, teachers and girls made delicious canapés for guests to try.

The annual Bedford Girls’ School lacrosse match between the 1st XII and Alumnae team also marked the opening of the state-of-the-art Cople Fields. Alumnae witnessed a 10-4 win for the 1st XII in the company of more than 200 members of the School’s community, who enjoyed tea and fizz from the sidelines.

Studying a wide range of subjects, the girls shared their experiences and are keen to support current BGS girls who may be following in their footsteps.

Dr Jasjot Kaur Singhota (1993-2004) Jasjot was tragically killed in a traffic accident on 26th January 2017, aged 30. Jasjot was a junior doctor, working as an Anaesthetic Specialist Registrar (ST4) and on course to becoming a Consultant.

At school Jasjot was an extremely popular student who excelled in all areas of school life. Jasjot was on the Head Girl’s Team, an accomplished rower, a talented musician and also the first female Head of Corps at CCF. Jasjot had ambitions to work for Médecins Sans Frontières (UK), as she felt very strongly about helping others.
