Looking Forward In the face of a powerful trifecta - a global pandemic, social awakening, and economic downturn - the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus (BGMC) has emerged resilient, steadfast, and more committed than ever to our mission of unity, inclusivity, and acceptance through the power of music. Despite these unprecedented challenges, our 2023 season marked a period of triumph, demonstrating the strength of our spirit and the unwavering support of our community.

However, we recognize that the road ahead is not without its challenges.

As we look forward to the future, we see a landscape that holds both opportunity and potential risk.

Our earned revenues have shown robust health, a testament to the value and quality of our performances. Yet, the struggles we face in contributed revenues present a significant hurdle for our sustained growth. Our strong foundation of loyal donors has been instrumental to our current success – thank you to your continued support.

Financial sustainability is a critical aspect of our forward-looking strategy.

We are dedicated to building a resilient and agile organization that can not only weather future uncertainties but also seize opportunities for growth, evolution, and innovation. We understand that in order to maintain the vigor and vibrancy of BGMC, investing in our internal structure is paramount.

That is why, over the past year we have hired two additional full time staff members – a director of marketing overseeing earned revenue, and an Artistic Operations Manager to ensure the highest caliber performances are achieved.

In the coming years, we will focus our efforts on strengthening our financial position to mitigate cash flow threats, expanding our donor base, and investing in our organizational structure. These efforts will be underpinned by our unwavering commitment to our mission and the community we serve; to create musical experience that inspire change, build community, and celebrate difference.

As we navigate these challenges, we remain hopeful and excited for the future. We believe in the transformative power of music and are committed to sharing this with our community and beyond. As we continue our journey, we are grateful for the support of our patrons, donors, and the broader BGMC family. Together, we will continue to build a chorus that not only sings, but also makes a difference.

We are thrilled to share with you that BGMC has successfully wrapped up its first full season of in-person live performances since 2019. Together we celebrated the holidays with Joyful & Triumphant & Gay, commissioned and staged a world premiere from incredible composer John Bucchino in Born This Way, danced in our seats to the music of Whitney & Friends, welcomed more than 10,000 audience members back to the concert hall, continued to invest in our community partners and the next generation of vocalists, and so much more. Might we add, we also celebrate Pride all year long, recognizing that it extends far beyond the month of June.

As Whitney Houston once said, “I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadow. If I fail, if I succeed, at least I’ll live as I believe.” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the essence of our past season. Thank you for celebrating the power of self-love and acceptance, and embrace the unique qualities that make each of us who we are.

Your generous support during an extraordinarily difficult time for the performing arts helped make this season possible. Your belief in BGMC allowed us to remain bold and innovative with exuberant music while adjusting to a new normal. Thank you.

We are especially proud that we were finally able to present “Born This Way,” as it has been such along time in the making (7+ years!). The crown jewel of this production was the groundbreaking world premiere of “A Peacock Among Pigeons”. A Peacock Among Pigeons is a children’s book that tells the tale of learning how to stand out when you can’t fit in. To further spread its message, BGMC commissioned award-winning songwriter John Bucchino to transform the book into song. We make music that makes a difference.

Through heartwarming moments and thought-provoking scenes, this work explores themes of identity, belonging, and self-discovery. With vibrant costumes and stunning lighting designs, this production promises to be a visual feast for the eyes. But at its core, “A Peacock Among Pigeons” is a story about acceptance and finding one’s place in the world. It is a reminder that we are all unique and special in our own way, and that it is possible to find happiness and fulfillment when we embrace our individuality.
