FROM THE MAESTRO There is a fantastic lyric by Dr. Seuss in today’s opening song, Welcome Christmas while we stand heart to heart and hand in hand! That one line does a very good job of encapsulating what we do here at the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus. We stand heart to heart and hand in hand and sing. We sing to tell the story of our lives, we sing to make the world a better place, and we sing to share the love in our hearts. After a draining fall election season it feels really good to stand on this stage and share the spirit of the holidays with you!

For eight years, English composer Will Todd has been creating jazz settings of traditional carols for the choir of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. It is quite ingenious to take traditional Christmas carols that we all know and create new jazz versions that allow us to hear the carols as if they are brand new. Many thanks to Will for creating new versions just for the BGMC. Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo has created a new version for men’s chorus of his gorgeous Evening Prayer. Starting with the opening sax solo, you will be entranced until the last chord dies away. I really had no idea how to top last year’s Christmas Can-Can but then someone sent me a copy of Dear Santa (Bring me a man this Christmas) as performed by The Weather Girls! Written by Paul Shaffer, it originally appeared on the same album as Presto — it’s a Disco Christmas! Time to sit back and enjoy; forget about that election! Enjoy the traditional songs we have all grown up with and revel in some new ones. Most of all, enjoy the love that is present here in this room!

Reuben M. Reynolds, III, Music Director

Reuben M. Reynolds, III, has been the Music Director of the BGMC since December,1997. After earning undergraduate degrees in both economics and music, Mr. Reynolds received his Master of Music degree from Louisiana State University where he was teaching assistant to Metropolitan Opera soprano Martina Arroyo, and was on the conducting staff of the Baton Rouge Lyric Opera. In Kansas City, Mr. Reynolds served as Music Director of the Heartland Men’s Chorus from 1989 to 1998 and was also Conductor of the Philharmonia of Kansas City and the Kansas City Civic Opera Theatre. In the summer of 1994, Mr. Reynolds made his European debut conducting the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Beethoven Chamber Orchestra of Ostrava, Czech Republic. He returned to the Czech Republic to conduct the West Bohemia Symphony Orchestra in 1995. Reuben spent the summer of 1998 in St. Petersburg, Russia, conducting the Hermitage Camerata in the Catherine the Great Theatre. Mr. Reynolds has commissioned more than 20 major pieces and hundreds of arrangements in his career. The Boston Globe describes his conducting as “expert and idiomatic.” 5

WELCOME

Photo: Michael Willer

Welcome to Jingle All the Way! At this joyous time of the year we are proud and happy to be part of your holiday tradition. So many of you tell us that it’s not quite the holidays until you’ve experienced the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus concert. It’s something we work hard to delivery and today’s show gives you a great mix of music: traditional, new and a few things to jingle along with. We create musical experiences to inspire change, build community, and celebrate difference. Your support makes our important work possible. Talk to your friends about us. Bring them to a chorus event. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram. Like us on Facebook. Download our app. Take a selfie (at intermission). Make sure you are on the mailing list and the email list. Audition. And, of course, donations are always welcome. Individual contributions fill the gap between corporate giving and ticket sales, which constitute less than half of BGMC’s income. We are able to make an impact in the community thanks to the talents of hundreds of singers and volunteers. We especially thank our foundation and corporate sponsors for their ongoing support: Bank of America, and IVF New England. Thank you for being part of the BGMC family! Here’s to a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2017!

Craig Coogan, Executive Director

Craig Coogan joined the BGMC as Executive Director in October 2012. He is an expert in developing strategies and programs to help GLBTA and other nonprofit organizations achieve their operational and artistic goals. He previously served as Executive Director for One Voice Mixed Chorus in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was a founding board member and treasurer for ten years of the acclaimed Women’s choral group Vox Femina Los Angeles. A graduate of Syracuse University, he has produced independent films, award-winning documentaries, and acclaimed original plays. 7

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Photo: Boston Living Center

Since its founding in 1982 the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the LGBT community of Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social and arts arenas. As a staunch supporter of LGBT causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for every major AIDS service organization in the area; several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners; various events during Pride Week in Boston; the Fenway Men’s Event dinner and is the main draw for Holly Folly, Provincetown’s community holiday celebration held each December. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more. The Chorus sang at the inaugural gala for Governor Charlie Baker, the first LGBT group to do so for a New England governor or for any Republican inaugural in the US.

Photo: GALA Choruses

The BGMC was an active participant in the same-sex marriage movement, becoming a role model for other choruses throughout the world. The BGMC performed at numerous events and hand delivered CDs of itself singing “Marry Us” to every Massachusetts state legislator. Each year the BGMC donates hundreds of tickets to gay and lesbian student organizations and to people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and CDs to support dozens of Boston area non-profit causes. The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities and schools throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the LGBT community. Proceeds from community concerts go to support GSAs and other supportive groups. Since the program’s inception the BGMC has helped raise $522,000 and brought a vital lifeline to youth organizations. 13

The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is one of New England’s largest and most successful community-based choruses. Founded in 1982, the 175-voice ensemble is celebrated for its outstanding musicianship, creative programming, and groundbreaking community outreach. Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Reuben M. Reynolds, III, the BGMC sings a wide spectrum of classical and popular music and creates social change by providing a positive, affirming image of the gay and lesbian community. The Chorus is heard live by more than 10,000 people each season and thousands more through recordings, television, and internet broadcasts. CBS-WBZ recently named The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus one of the “top 5” choruses in the city of Boston. In June 2015 BGMC became the first GLBT chorus to tour the Middle East. bgmc.org

LYRICS Betelehemu Yourba dialect from West Africa We are glad we have a Father to trust. We are glad that we have a Father to rely upon. Where was Jesus born? Where was He born? Bethlehem, the city of wonder. That is where the Father was born for sure. Praise, praise, praise be to Him. We thank thee, we thank Thee, we thank Thee for this day, Gracious Father. Praise, praise, praise be to thee, Merciful Father. Hot Hanukkah Chanuka, oh chanuka — a beautiful holiday, A merry and joyous one, There is not another like it. All night we play the dreydl game, We eat sizzling hot potato pancakes endlessly. “Quickly, children, light the tiny candles, Say ‘Al Hanisim,’ praise God for the miracles And come, let’s dance a circle dance.”
