FROM THE MAESTRO The English have always been well known for their choral music — after all, music has been a foundation of King’s College since 1441, when King Henry VI envisaged that the Choir would provide music for the daily offices and celebrations of the Mass in his new Chapel. Great composers abounded, from Thomas Tallis in the 16th century and Handel in the 19th, to century to Benjamin Britten in the 20th. Just imagine how the world felt when an English rock band from Liverpool showed up in 1960!

That band was the Beatles—and they would take the world by storm! The “British Invasion” of the United States occurred in 1964 when they held the top 5 positions on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart simultaneously. From Tom Jones to the Spice Girls to Adele, our fascination with “Brit Pop” would never waver! Many of us were going through a period of great change, growing into adulthood at the same time that the Gay Rights movement was taking off. Many of these songs are burned into our memories—can you imagine dancing away on the dance floor without hearing Relax thumping away in the background? Today we are going to take a stroll down memory lane and revisit some of those “guilty pleasures” of yesteryear. Sit back, Relax, and enjoy the trip!

Reuben M. Reynolds, III, Music Director

Reuben M. Reynolds, III, has been the Music Director of the BGMC since December,1997. After earning undergraduate degrees in both economics and music, Mr. Reynolds received his Master of Music degree from Louisiana State University where he was teaching assistant to Metropolitan Opera soprano Martina Arroyo, and was on the conducting staff of the Baton Rouge Lyric Opera. In Kansas City, Mr. Reynolds served as Music Director of the Heartland Men’s Chorus from 1989 to 1998 and was also Conductor of the Philharmonia of Kansas City and the Kansas City Civic Opera Theatre. In the summer of 1994, Mr. Reynolds made his European debut conducting the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Beethoven Chamber Orchestra of Ostrava, Czech Republic. He returned to the Czech Republic to conduct the West Bohemia Symphony Orchestra in 1995. Reuben spent the summer of 1998 in St. Petersburg, Russia, conducting the Hermitage Camerata in the Catherine the Great Theatre. Mr. Reynolds has commissioned more than 20 major pieces and hundreds of arrangements in his career. The Boston Globe describes his conducting as “expert and idiomatic.” 5

WELCOME I spent my junior year in college living in London. For a theatre major it was fantastic seeing and experiencing the British way of life. Since then I’ve been a bit of an Anglophile—being a huge fan of all sorts of U.K. entertainment, from Patsy & Edina to the Crawley family on Downton Abbey to a wide range of mysteries. I subscribe to both Acorn and Britbox! As you can imagine, I’ve been especially enamored with the repertoire of this concert. I’m sure that you’ll be tapping your feet, smiling and raising a toast to Britannia after today’s show. We create musical experiences to inspire change, build community, and celebrate difference. Your support makes our important work possible. Talk to your friends. Like us on Facebook. Download our app. Take a selfie (at intermission). Make sure you are on the mail and email lists. Audition. And, of course, donations are always welcome. Individual contributions fill the gap between corporate giving and ticket sales, which constitute less than half of BGMC’s income. There are donation boxes in the lobby. We are able to make an impact in the community thanks to the talents of hundreds of singers and volunteers. We especially thank our foundation and corporate sponsors for their ongoing support: Bank of America, jetBlue, Product Genesis and IVF New England. Thank you for being part of the BGMC family!

Craig Coogan, Executive Director Craig Coogan joined the BGMC as Executive Director in October 2012. He is an expert in developing strategies and programs to help LGBTQA and other nonprofit organizations achieve their operational and artistic goals. Craig brings experience in both the for-profit and non-profit arenas. He previously served as Executive Director for One Voice Mixed Chorus in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was a founding board member and treasurer for ten years of the acclaimed Women’s choral group Vox Femina Los Angeles. A graduate of Syracuse University, he has produced independent films, award-winning documentaries, and acclaimed original plays. 7

MEET THE STAFF CHAD WEIRICK, Principal Accompanist & Assistant

Photo: Michael Willer

Music Director A native of Rockford, Illinois, Chad graduated high school at the age of 15 and moved to New York City. There, he became the organist for Radio City Music Hall and rehearsal pianist for the Rockettes, a position that earned him a listing in Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! as the youngest musician to ever work full time on Broadway. He also was the pianist for various Broadway shows including A Chorus Line, Shenandoah, and The Act. Subsequently he moved to Boston to attend the New England Conservatory of Music, where he received a Masters Degree in Composition under Malcolm Peyton. Chad’s numerous choral arrangements have been performed and recorded not only by the BGMC, but many other choruses nationally and internationally. They are published by Alfred Music and Tresona Publishing. He also works in the music department of Wellesley High School and for the First Congregational church of Hanover. In addition to his music credits, Chad is also an avid runner. He has been privileged to run the Boston marathon for many years in support of the Boston Gay Mens Chorus. Chad thanks his partner David Slaga for his support, friendship and love. Chad has been the Principal Accompanist & Assistant Music Director since 1993 and serves as Assistant Choral Director and Accompanist at Wellesley High School.

DR. LEWANA CLARK, American Sign Language Interpreter LeWana Clark has been the American Sign Language interpreter for the BGMC since 1989. She creates a unique interpretation that incorporates not only the lyrics that are sung but also the tone and musical qualities of the melody. She provides communication access services for Deaf, hard of hearing, Deaf-Blind, and non-deaf consumers in Boston, across the Commonwealth, nationally and internationally. Although she spends most of her time working in court or in other legal settings, she’s also qualified to interpret in medical, mental health, governmental, educational and theatrical/performing arts settings. LeWana recently completed her doctorate degree at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. LeWana has been the American Sign Language Interpreter for the BGMC since 1989. American Sign Language (ASL) is a natural language that serves as the predominant sign language of Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus began providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation at its concerts during the 1980s. The ASL interpretation continues to be a powerful and visual commitment of our organization to welcome all. Both Deaf and non-deaf audience members rave about LeWana Clark’s interpretation of songs and the value that she contributes to the concert going experience. 9

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Photo: Boston Living Center

Since its founding in 1982 the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the LGBT community of Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social, and arts arenas. As a staunch supporter of LGBT causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for every major AIDS service organization in the area, several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners, various events during Pride Week in Boston, the Fenway Men’s Event dinner, and is the main draw for Provincetown’s annual December community holiday celebration, Holly Folly. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more. The Chorus sang at the inaugural gala for Governor Charlie Baker, the first LGBT group to perform for a New England governor or for any Republican inaugural in the U.S.

Photo: GALA Choruses

The BGMC was an active participant in the same-sex marriage movement, becoming a role model for other choruses throughout the world. The BGMC performed at numerous events and hand delivered CDs of itself singing Marry Us to every Massachusetts state legislator. Each year the BGMC donates hundreds of tickets to LGBT student organizations and to people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and CDs to support dozens of Boston area non-profit causes. The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities and schools throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the LGBT community. Proceeds from community concerts go to support Gay-Straight Alliances and other supportive groups. Since the program’s inception the BGMC has helped raise $644,500 and brought a vital lifeline to youth organizations. 12

IN MEMORIAM

We remember and honor our brothers who have passed on. From our very beginning to today, we have lost many members, including our founder Joseph Bevins. We lost our first member to AIDS in 1987. This started a continual stream of singing at memorial services. A marks those who died of AIDS. It matters not how long these men sang with us. Whether they sang for a single performance or dozens, they are forever part of our chorus family. They are always in our hearts and memories.
