FROM THE MAESTRO In the song Love Is Christmas, Sara Bareilles writes “Love is simply joy that I’m home.” As Bill and I return from visiting family in Georgia it strikes me that truer words were never spoken. The same feeling happens every Wednesday night when we gather for rehearsal. And it happens every time we walk out onstage to sing for you — after all, you are part of our family. Today we celebrate three of our family members: Chad Weirick, Jay Baer, and David Shaffer.
Chad, our Assistant Music Director and Accompanist, is celebrating 25 years with the Chorus. Over those years I have grown to value him as one of the most wonderful musicians I have ever worked with. He is invaluable both as our accompanist and as our arranger. We honor him now by presenting a piece originally written for us ten years ago: Pictures of a Season. In it he takes us on a journey of music styles — holiday carols, spirituals, even music in the style of Carl Orff (think Carmina Burana)! His arrangement of The Holly and the Ivy was composed this year after our tour of South Africa. It features sounds and songs we heard as we crossed the country. It includes a riff we heard while marching in the first Gay Pride parade in the city of George, as well as singing in several South African languages. What a pleasure it is to honor him by singing his music! Jay Baer joined the chorus 18 years ago. I have always thought of him as the psychiatrist who likes — no, loves — to sing! Jay came in about a year ago and wanted to show Bill and I some parodies he had written. They were wonderful! Tonight we are featuring his version of Rose’s Turn from Gypsy - reimagined as Santa’s Turn. I’ll wait and let you figure it out when you hear it! David Shaffer, has been a member of the BGMC for five years, retired Director of Bands at Miami University, he is also a well published composer. When he heard that we were featuring a brass quintet, he ran to ask to create a piece for the chorus. Tonight, Holiday Bells, Brass and Boys opens the program. I never knew when he joined that he would also be writing for us. Let’s hope there are many more pieces to come! Our family is large and varied but when we come together we speak with one voice. Thank you for joining us on our journey this Holiday Season. Never forget, you too are part of this wonderful family that is the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus!
Reuben M. Reynolds, III, Music Director Reuben M. Reynolds, III, has been the Music Director of the BGMC since December,1997. After earning undergraduate degrees in both economics and music, Mr. Reynolds received his Master of Music degree from Louisiana State University where he was teaching assistant to Metropolitan Opera soprano Martina Arroyo, and was on the conducting staff of the Baton Rouge Lyric Opera. In Kansas City, Mr. Reynolds served as Music Director of the Heartland Men’s Chorus from 1989 to 1998 and was also Conductor of the Philharmonia of Kansas City and the Kansas City Civic Opera Theatre. In the summer of 1994, Mr. Reynolds made his European debut conducting the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Beethoven Chamber Orchestra of Ostrava, Czech Republic. He returned to the Czech Republic to conduct the West Bohemia Symphony Orchestra in 1995. Reuben spent the summer of 1998 in St. Petersburg, Russia, conducting the Hermitage Camerata in the Catherine the Great Theatre. Mr. Reynolds has commissioned more than 20 major pieces and hundreds of arrangements in his career. The Boston Globe describes his conducting as “expert and idiomatic.” 5

WELCOME Season’s Greeting and Welcome back to Jordan Hall! As I get older the holidays seem to come around faster and faster. (Maybe that’s because we get our first call for tickets for these shows in June.) We are so glad to have you back in our home. The holidays mean different things for us based on our varied family, cultural, and religious traditions. For us what makes this time of year so special is that our chosen community comes together to celebrate the numerous holidays at this time of year. It’s especially fitting then that so much of the music in this concert comes from our own membership. We create musical experiences to inspire change, build community, and celebrate difference. Your support makes our important work possible. Talk to your friends. Like us on Facebook. Download our app. Take a selfie (at intermission). Make sure you are on the mail and email lists. Audition. And, of course, donations are always welcome. Individual contributions fill the gap between corporate giving and ticket sales, which constitute less than half of BGMC’s income. Feel free to fill our gift boxes with a donation. We are able to make an impact in the community thanks to the talents of hundreds of singers and volunteers. We especially thank our foundation and corporate sponsors for their ongoing support: Bank of America, jetBlue, Product Genesis and IVF New England. Thank you for being part of the BGMC family!

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Photo: Boston Living Center
Since its founding in 1982 the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus has infused itself into the LGBT community of Boston. It has also reached out beyond that community into the political, social, and arts arenas. As a staunch supporter of LGBT causes, the Chorus has distinguished itself by performing for every major AIDS service organization in the area, several Human Rights Campaign annual fundraising dinners, various events during Pride Week in Boston, the Fenway Men’s Event dinner, and is the main draw for Provincetown’s annual December community holiday celebration, Holly Folly. The Chorus has created innovative collaborations with organizations including Greater Boston PFLAG, GLSEN Boston, AIDS Action Committee, and more. The Chorus sang at the inaugural gala for Governor Charlie Baker, the first LGBT group to perform for a New England governor or for any Republican inaugural in the U.S.

The BGMC was an active participant in the same-sex marriage movement, becoming a role model for other choruses throughout the world. The BGMC performed at numerous events and hand delivered CDs of itself singing Marry Us to every Massachusetts state legislator. Each year the BGMC donates hundreds of tickets to LGBT student organizations and to people living with HIV. The Chorus also donates tickets and CDs to support dozens of Boston area non-profit causes. The Chorus has been invited to perform concerts at dozens of open and affirming faith communities and schools throughout New England, bringing its message and music directly to thousands of people in urban, suburban, and rural locales, helping to create new allies for the LGBT community. Proceeds from community concerts go to support Gay-Straight Alliances and other supportive groups. Since the program’s inception the BGMC has helped raise $600,000 and brought a vital lifeline to youth organizations. 13

IN MEMORIAM
We remember and honor our brothers who have passed on. From our very beginning to today, we have lost many members, including our founder Joseph Bevins. We lost our first member to AIDS in 1987. This started a continual stream of singing at memorial services. A marks those who died of AIDS. It matters not how long these men sang with us. Whether they sang for a single performance or dozens, they are forever part of our chorus family. They are always in our hearts and memories.
