BGMC Annual Report 2020-2021 by Boston Gay Men's Chorus

The 39th season of the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus was the first time we did not perform live due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

Our voices were not silenced, however. We continued to create musical experiences to inspire change, build community and celebrate difference. We did so on line instead of on stage.

The resurgence of racial injustice has reinforced our commitment to being a welcoming organization that celebrates difference. We’ve reviewed and updated our bylaws, member handbook, and other operations policies to ensure we are delivering on our commitment. The board is undergoing a training with artEquity to look at making sure BGMC continues to be inclusive and representative of our community. We’ve commissioned music from BIPOC and trans artists and are excited to share these stories as we return to in-person performances in 2022.

This Annual report reflects the incredible impact that BGMC has had even in a year when we couldn’t gather. Your support has madeus viable and sustainable. We are incredibly grateful.

We launched the BGMC Online portal in May of 2020 to showcase the diverse video content that the Chorus produces.

The pandemic doesn’t allow the Chorus to gather and make music, so we are utilizing the digital platform to share our music and our message of love and acceptance.

We produced 76 videos between March and August in a wide variety of styles covering many vital subjects.

We remember and honor our brothers who have passed on. From our very beginning to today, we have lost many members too soon, including our founder Joseph Bevins. We lost our first member to AIDS in 1987. This started a continual stream of singing at memorial services. The list of members who have passed on is available at www.bgmc.org in-memoriam. All those named are forever part of our chorus family. They are in our hearts and memories.

The generosity of individuals, corporate sponsors, and foundations provides nearly half of the BGMC’s annual revenue.

The Ovation Society recognizes those donors who have contributed $500 or more Sept. 1 to Aug 31, made a Planned Gift or given directly to our Endowment.

The organization is in a strong and stable financial condition.

NOTE: Figures are final 2020–21 internal numbers submitted to the auditors. The audit is expected to be completed by November 30, 2021, with the tax return filed on time without an extension in December.

MAP DONORS

The Member Assistance Program (MAP) provides financial support to singing members who need help with dues (which cover a small portion of music licensing costs and other rehearsal related fees), retreat fees and performance wardrobe costs.
