BGMC Annual Report 2019-2020

Page 1

The 38th season of the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus (2019–20) was unlike any in our history.

In December we presented A Super Gay Christmas, with record breaking ticket sales. In February our cabaret Another Opening was very successful.

In March we were excited to present the world premiere of A Peacock Among Pigeons by Broadway composer John Bucchino based on the award-winning children’s book by Tyler Curry and illustrated by Clarione Gutierrez. On March 5 approx. 100 members went to Wood Hills Middle School in Andover where an abridged version of the concert was presented. 80 youngsters took to the stage with BGMC and sang “Everything Possible.”

COVID-19 became a reality for all of us days later. The loss of our ability to gather and sing through the pandemic has been difficult and frustrating. The resurgence of racial injustice reminds us of the importance of our role in social change. It is, however, fitting that our last public performance before the shut-down was singing about the power of finding yourself and becoming the person you’re meant to be; to a full house of middle school students and their parents in the suburbs.

We will sing again. We will be guided by the science and the delivery of a vaccine. We are more than 200 voices strong on stage. We perform to audiences in the thousands who have a shared experience. When it is safe to return we will. In the meantime, we sing online. (See p. 5.)

There are many remarkable things in 2020. This Annual Report is one of them. Each and every name listed here has made the Chorus viable and sustainable. We are incredibly grateful.

We launched the BGMC Online portal in May of 2020 to showcase the diverse video content that the Chorus produces.

The pandemic doesn’t allow the Chorus to gather and make music, so we are utilizing the digital platform to share our music and our message of love and acceptance.

We produced 9 videos from March to August in a wide variety of styles covering many vital subjects.

IN MEMORIAM

n Musical Section Representative

We remember and honor our brothers who have passed on. From our very beginning to today, we have lost many members too soon, including our founder Joseph Bevins. We lost our first member to AIDS in 1987. This started a continual stream of singing at memorial services. The list of members who have passed on is available at https://www.bgmc.org/in-memoriam/. All those named are forever part of our chorus family. They are in our hearts and memories.

The generosity of individuals, corporate sponsors, and foundations provides nearly half of the BGMC’s annual revenue.

The Ovation Society recognizes those donors who have contributed $500 or more Sept. 1 to Aug 31, made a Planned Gift or given directly to our Endowment.

Members of The Ovation Society receive an exclusive and unique opportunity to secure their favorite seats on the dates of their choosing for the new BGMC concert season before anybody else. Members of The Ovation Society are invited to select exclusive BGMC events throughout the year.

If you work for a company that matches employee gifts to cultural organizations, please send in your matching gift form or call the Chorus office at 617-542-7464. To see if your company matches, ask your HR department or visit the website matchinggift.com.

The following list represents cumulative gifts 9/1/2019–8/31/2020. Gifts include all cash and in-kind donations, purchases of event tickets and amounts paid for winning auction items. Donations of auction items are not included. We’ve made every effort to accurately represent the gifts. In the event of an error or omission, please contact the office so we can remedy it.
