We’re innovating to continue spreading the good word: Gay.

2021-2022 BGMC Annual Report

In 2021, we were forced to innovate – and we took action.

Throughout the past two years, we actively listened to how social and economic inequities and the relentless effect of the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the BGMC community and beyond. In 2022 we reflected on what we learned – and took action.

BGMC was featured in a new full-length documentary film, “Music Triumphs Homophobia.” Using archival material, contemporary tour and news footage, interviews with past and present chorus members and BGMC staff, as well as commentary from activists, audience members, arts advocates and political leaders, “Music Triumphs Homophobia,” documents how a small, Boston-based chorus became global cultural ambassadors educating people about LGBTQ lives and encouraging acceptance and respect for the LGBTQ community.

We took a holistic look at who we impactfrom our performers to audiences – as well as our authority in social discourse. We made a concerted and proactive effort to ensure the voices of the LGBQT+ and other marginalized communities were uplifted and heard. We did so by returning the stage for something truly magical in response to the tense socio-political climate of 2022.

About Us

Returning to the stage after a 30-month COVID hiatus, celebrated LGBTQ Pride with the iconic music of Disney in a first of its kind collaboration with Disney Concerts. It’s was our biggest show to date: 250 singers. 43 songs. 25-piece orchestra. Memorable video clips from Disney films. Storytelling celebrating diversity and perseverance encapsulating Boston’s Symphony Hall in a whimsy.

It was a momentous occasion to return back to the shuttered concert hall to fill it will joyous music, laughter, and dance. Most importantly, we we’re able to bring together all of BGMCperformers and audiences.

We’re energized by the progress we’ve made and the momentum we’ve built. We still have a long road ahead and we recognize we must meet people where they are in order to continue having a BGMC that is for everyone.

We are investing in new and exciting programmatic material to grow and engage new audiences.

For 40 years, we’ve been creating musical experiences to inspire change, build community, and celebrate difference. The Boston Gay Men’s Chorus is one of New England’s largest and most successful community-based choruses. Founded in 1982, the 250+-voice ensemble is celebrated for its outstanding musicianship, creative programming, groundbreaking community outreach and an innovative educational program. Under the dynamic leadership of Music Director Reuben Reynolds, the BGMC sings a wide spectrum of classical and popular music and creates social change by providing a positive, affirming image of the LGBTQ+ community. BGMC lifts up historically underrepresented voices by commissioning at least one major work each year. The Chorus is heard live by thousands of people each season and millions more through recording, television and internet broadcasts. BGMC is a Cultural Ambassador — being the first LGBTQ+ chorus to perform in Poland in 2005, the Middle East in 2015 and in South Africa in June 2018.

We are Stable Because of You.
